Kido's Final Broadcast | Man In The High Castle [S4 E9]

- The "final broadcast" from Empire TV in the 4th and final season of MITHC. This was a rather emotional farewell in which Kido sings goodbye to an Empire he spent his life's work to maintain, all to see it crumble before him.
The song played is Japan's national anthem, the "Kimi Ga Yo"; a poem over 1000 years old. - Комедії
That's probably when he thought he would never see Japan again.
I always thought the no glasses really played a role in portraying how kido feels. With the glasses he is "inspector kido" never showing emotions and loyal to the job but in this scene he's just kido a man with regrets who still loves his country
Man that right there is deep.
Nice symbolism there
He begins singing the first line, then mumbles the next before stopping altogether. A powerful metaphor for how he started the story as a dedicated patriot, slowly became disillusioned, and now will never see his country again so he can reconcile for his crimes.
I think he never became disillusioned as a patriot. He has simply started to place higher value in honor, not sacrificing it for the "common good".
I don’t think he became disillusioned or anything, he’s probably just accepting his fate.
Nice symbolism
You do realize that he survived and got out of there, and actually went back to japan im pretty sure its been a while
@@mafp1641 According to the wiki, he escapes this cell but ends up being coerced into staying in America with the Yakuza so that his son can go to Japan.
This was definitely the most touching scene in the series
not as touching as Inspector Kido talking to his son about baseball T.T
Indeed
@@shoulderkolibri That scene is fucking heartbreaking
Frank Frink says fuck you
shoulderkolibri that was very emotional
Kido doing right by Tagomi at the end made his character arc so fulfilling. He stayed true to his duty.
Tagomi was the best character
Maybe the saddest version of the japanese anthem. It sounds like pure nostalgy. :'(
Just imagine yourself in his shoes, being locked up while all other Japanese leave for home, and the idea that you may never see your home country again.
It would be depressing :c
I felt the same when me and my family immigrated to the US 3 years ago, I never really wanted to go in the first place but I had no choice since I’m just a kid and my mother is assigned to work in the US. To this day I still miss the Philippines, the people, the tropical weather, the culture, language etc. I can’t imagine never seeing my beloved home land ever again, the place where I spent 11 years of my life in, I had many friends back their who I left and loved for years like my own family up to this day. Kido in this clip reminded me how homesick I am and I wish I get to see the Philippines again some day.
I had an emotional break down while writing this comment 😢.
oh don't worry he'll be fine his just acting, kido is not japanese anyways his from the Philippines. So he don't really give a shit at best. Lol..
@@jansandman6983 Are you stupid? Obviously we're talking about the context in this show
And he had so many chances to return.
Minute I saw the vent in the ceiling
I knew where he was
Easily the best character in the entire show for me, his progression from cold hearted at the beginning and then eventually learning the error of his ways at the end was great
Even when he was a cruel and cold man, this scene and the one with his son, finally showed what is inside Kido's heart
His heart was shown way before this season. When he fell in love and sett the enslaved prostitute free. It showed that he had compassion.
Basterd could have let his son be a baseball player but he reap what he sows.

Late but yeah... Just so happened that Imperial Japan won. He would've been a good man even if they lost or as nationalist/patriotic, he died.
This has to be my favourite scene out of the whole series, very emotional and powerful. Joel de la Fuente did an excellent job at conveying the array of emotions Kido was feeling.
Joel and Rufus were excellent in their roles
I speak a bit of Japanese and I started singing Kimigayo along with Kido when watching the episode. 😢
Me too. I’m saying this a Filipino and my country was occupied by the Japanese back then.
Kido is the best character for me in the Man in the High Castle. He did his duty, he served his country well.
There’s just something hauntingly beautiful with the Japanese national anthem being played in the background.
Kido is definitely my favourite character, like many of my favourite characters at first you want them to die but then you want them to live no matter what
I honestly feel like having the Japanese leave the Pacific States like that was story telling mistep. You already had the Navy pushing for a "gentle but firm" approach and Minister Tagomi would definitely push for more autonomy for the PSA.
It'd also be a perfect foil to the Year Zero plan the Germans were pushing on the US and you could have the Japanese begin racking up diplomatic victories against the Reich.
The show could've gone on for 3 or 4 more seasons but Amazon wanted to move to the next cash cow and decided to give the show the GoT treatment.
The ending was meant to be open ended. Smith was supposed to realize his mistakes and kill himself passing on the rule of America to someone else who was anti-Nazi. The JPS was also supposed to be free.
There is still a lot of conflict to be resolved by the characters, but the ending is intended to show that things will get better
They also pulled that war in China out of their ass to somehow justify that pullout.
Nikolay Pavlenko, the show’s focus is in America. It can be inferred, however that both Japan and the Reich were dealing with conflicts in Asia, Europe, and Africa. So the war with China, still makes sense and doesn’t come completely out of nowhere
Nah.
Passione Nera, these empires were huge, if there was an American resistance to the axis then surely every other nation too had one to some extent
I just realized this was the same room Kido had Frank's family gassed to death, hence the plastic on the furniture.
Kido's character was the finest in this series. Too bad they wrapped it up in 4 seasons.
Man its honestly tragic.
1:44
They Use Emergency Warning Buzzer lol
BTW, Kido Shows his dignity For His Country while Singing Kimigayo.
A Great Patriot Indeed
What many guys don't know is, that Kido realized something while waiting for his dead. Something he never knew before.
Family above everything else.
Like Clannad
@@Rokaishi dont say that.
@@jarrodyuki7081 Like Clannad.
Kido's was the only good ending tbh
I would not say exactly good. He became the complete opposite by joining the Yakuza just to save his son.
@@Gillan1220 That’s enough of a redemption Kido can get regarding his circumstances tbh and it’s a realistic choice too. Any parents, who truly loves their child, will do anything to make sure they are safe and well of.
The ending scene where it goes to static is sad never to be on again
Weird... I learned the English translation of the Japanese anthem with these lyrics....
May the peaceful reign last long
May it last for thousands of years
Until this tiny stone
Grows into a massive rock
And the moss will
Grow deep and thick
That's the translation in the 1973 book Farewell to Manzanar by James and Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston.
The best character, cant decide between him and smith
De la fuente and sewell were amazing
Link between Kido and Frank of this show is the best part about it. 2 opposing characters with opposing motives and priorities.
At the end, both only grew so much and developed as an individual from their worst enemy.
Simply the best. I love this series. Ty Kido, Ty Tagomi. Ty Philiph k. Dick❤️
I felt horror and anxiety watching this, even now I'm having goosebumps
theory: Kido died in that room, and actually all the rest of the ending is Kido's subconscious turning off
Gave me goosebumps lol. That was beautiful
Kido is the best character. Joel deserved all of the awards.
Kido has the best character development imo
My Fri : Why are you crying? This is just a scene of TV series.
A Scene :
Arigato chief inspector kido
"As It says the evil ones will suffer in the room depressed with thoughts.... As they see them selfs, in what they could have been.
Through a TV screen."
- My little quote their
that was the actor who played paul wang in one of my fav tv shows space above and beyond
Imagine people doing this for real, people in countries like the USSR and East Germany
That's Japan's national anthem playing in the background as the clip begins. [Edit] Duh, I know.
We kill each other because we of our different ideologies. And deeper into that hurt eachother because of our differences. And deeper into that we don’t co-operate with eachother cos we don’t have a common enemy
Reminds me of when the British left Hong Kong. Then China arrived
*_The british were colonialists. They don't deserve Hong Kong._*

Then...the fire nation invaded
The Mr. Man Better than Beijing. Remember June 4th.
Pierre Sihite On That topic, Fire nation in Chinese sounds very similar to “hot pot” in Chinese. 火国 🆚 火锅, both “huo Guo” without tones
Idk why in that part I cried
Anthem of 1930 record
Fun fact about the Japanese national anthem it's is really the most controversial
@Brysen1439 but the German has been criticised for being very nationalist and geographical
@@pauladambarral5039 isnt that pretty much the purpose of these songs though? I have never really paid attention to other nations anthems, problaby since it would require lots of translations. My own, the swedish one, is very geographical but not really nationalistic (not even referring to sweden but "nordic", which at the time of writing pretty much was one and the same). There is a part added from about 1910 though, not considered true part of it, that is very nationalistic and is commonly not used.
What is controversial about it? It's basically wishing long life to the Emperor and his family.
@@daru5002 yeah but its still is because some Japanese people refuse to obey the national flag and anthem
This scene was kinda sad not gonna lie
I forgot that kido is still alive lol!
Hai kakka!!
I swear to god I got fucking depression from this scene
Does Japan keep existing as a country?
Yes they just withdrew from the pacific states. They are focusing on the Chinese rebellion.
Isn't that the room they took that woman and her kids to and then they gassed them? The plastic-covered sofa.
The very thing he despised and didn't want is what he got. He was only scared of dying without honor, i.e, dying on non Japanese soil which he might've since he stayed back in the BCR led San Francisco.
patriotic feels
The actor as Kido seems not to be a native Japanese speaker, because he pronounces ' syazare' for 'sazare'.
He is from Philippines (his real name is Joel de la Fuente)
トンデモ日本観ここに極まれりだね
Is kido’s comb over to the left or right? Ive seen both and it’s confusing me
Waiting for the poltergeist to show up…
Is that tagomi in the broadcast? Lol
What happened?
they tried to gas him in the room but he escaped and joined yakuza, he saves his son which he's sent to Japan. kido remains in san francisco
What is he singing?
the japanese anthem, "kimigayo"
taking American soil is one thing but one can never hold American soil
Good scene, but only how to say TV caster' BANZAI ;-9 is discomfort from we Japanese perspective, Japanese say BONSAI more slowly. and rarely say anything except banzai playfully . KIMIGAYO ,
Japanese don't sing it or like it too much, because ceremony music ,its not emotional song.
Good to have insight from a Japanese person. However, consider that this is alternate history - wherein Japan has won the Second World War and remained hyper-nationalistic and militaristic in the same way it was during the Imperial period. Japanese people in this alternate timeline are subject to years of control and nationalistic indoctrination, and therefore take the rituals very seriously with deep emotion.
@@halfaworldaway
BANZAI is formal and urban legend. In the world (especially in the United States), it is promoted as a single thing to the Japanese with HARAKIRI, but the general Japanese are drunk or intoxicated do and utter BANZAI with humor, but those who are seriously thinking about it No. KIMIGAYO, it is a mental illness. You only sing at the Soccer World Cup. These stereotypes are so pretentious and insulting that Japanese people assume they eat sushi and tempura every meal.
@@letthunder8538 there is no soccer world cup in that world
Japanese army Who live in Korea peninsula they were like as chief inspector kido. They were doing what he did to American residents.
Strange personality. Cannot survive back in japan due to crimes he has committed in their name but stays to hate/torture the locals. A true war crime survivor. A serial killer who loves his job
All hail The Japanese exterminators
What terrible writing, it just seems like the writers had to just come up with a plot convenience to wrap things up quick.
What are you talking about? This was a wonderful scene
You do realise he survives right?
@@conversationtosaurusrex He's talking about the episode as a whole. The ending was complete garbage
Cyrus splish splash your opinion is fucking trash.
Communist antifascis t And you are a communist, your opinion is absolute garbage. Murderous ideology of trash.
I am German, of course I am against the nazis, but you would think I loved my country more than Japan right? Well in this show it was the exact opposite. The collapse of the Germans even made me kind of happy, but when the Japanese withdrew from the US, it made me actually sad. I don’t know why, but I feel like they payed with much more blood for this territory than the Germans did during the whole war.
They tried hard to keep the territory, but the empire was crumbling from the second on the show started. The Japanese did horrific things during the show, but they were still always honorable. And the people that build up a live there and had to leave, I feel sorry for them too. Even tho it was obvious that both Japan and Germany were supposed to be the enemies, I feel like Japan wasn’t one.
Karma is a bitch
Japan lost
yap, but Korea has lose too...
