      Not to mention it's completely out of step with the novel. The show writers couldn't resist the urge to dumb it down and go with "Nazis bad", a common theme which has been done a million times over. The novel ends with a far more complex and engaging theme: the ambivalence of good and evil. In the book, you essentially read a story about people who read a story about you, and realize that we shouldn't be so quick to pat ourselves on the back because we aren't that different from the Nazis. We are the same species with the same impulses, which are mirrored in both universes. So in the end of the novel (SPOILER!), when they meet the man in the high castle, they find high ranking Nazi officers in the living room listening to banned jazz music.

It destroyed the perception of an invincible soviet army, and the soviet state which made people to question openly and demand reforms and freedom, it divided the politicians and military between the old guard and the new it embodied occupied countries to challenge the Soviet Union which would lead to the fall of Berlin Wall and colapse of the eastern soviet bloc. While America was withdrawing from Vietnam, Democratic Republic of Vietnam via Provisional Revolutionary Government of Republic of South Vietnam still remain military appearance in Vietnamese territories under the 17th parallel-which called Liberation Army of South Vietnam as against the Republic of Vietnam and its Armed Forces. It’s Vietnamese soil after all, no matter the regime, sooner or later, it must be reunited. Like United States vs Confederate Stated, it was never an invasion when it’s reunification. But unlike the United States, it was never a civil war since America itself had intervened deeply and directly in for decades, used French-puppet, locals-governed and renamed it as “Republic of Vietnam” with same purpose of previous European colonial power.

      @SleekHairedChocolate The most important power change would be domination of the Navy over Army: decisive victory in Pacific, invasion of Australia and California by naval forces would give Yamamoto infinitely more political power, possibly replacing Tojo as Prime Minister. Imperial Court/Emperor would likely ally more closely with Navy to eliminate Army radicals (responsible for worst atrocities).

    The extent of the conquest was always my biggest issue with this show. Germany wouldn't have been able to conquer half the US, and Japan certainly didnt have the resources to subdue the west coast.

    • @kingcobra5885
      @kingcobra5885 4 роки тому +71

      Germany did not actually conquer half the US. We know that the Nazis succesfully landed on the east coast and dropped an atomic bomb on Washington D.C., killing most of the nations high command in one blow. The United States surrenderd after that, they did not put up much of a fight in this timeline since they had no allies, the US never recovered from the great depression and their entire pacific fleet had been taken out at pearl harbor. Also, you know.. the Nazis had atom bombs, whats holding the line worth if all your defending is gonna be reduced to rubble anyways. A much bigger problem in my eyes, is that they just straight up annexed half the US instead of making multiple smaller sattelite states out of it.

    • @TheTerranscout
      @TheTerranscout 4 роки тому +34

      @@kingcobra5885 if I remember right, the timely deviates from the main timeline majorly in late 1942, early 1943, the believed point that Germany would have had the bomb if they hadn't stopped development. By that point Germany was past its expansion high point and was being pushed back, especially on the eastern front, and secondarily in Africa and Sicily. If they had bomb, the most logical place for them to use it first would have been Russia, and since the commies probably wouldn't have surrendered after the first one, it would have taken 2, 3, maybe even 4 since the front was so large, just to stop the Red army from attacking, much less complete defeat. At that point Hitler would have run into the same issue that the US did in 1945 in that he would have run out of bombs for the time being.
      But let's ignore all of the European theater issues for a second and address the biggest issue with even a German invasion of just the northeast coast. germany had no surface fleet to speak of, and no staging area to launch an invasion of the continent from.
      Finally, as soon as Germany used the first bomb in Russia, the US would have been less concerned about secrecy of its own project and more concerned with speed and would have written a blank check to get the project done, and I'd wager that it would have been done before Germany could beat Russia and Britain in Europe, and build a navy that would have been able to challenge that of America and Britain on the surface in the Atlantic, especially on the American side of it.
      So my point of contention is that not America wouldn't have surrendered after the east coast was taken, and Washington was bombed, im saying that 1 or both of those things wouldnt have happened.

    • @TheTerranscout
      @TheTerranscout 4 роки тому +8

      @stephenblair67 the French surrendered in summer 1940, so any ships that would fallen into German hands that were subsequently attacked and destroyed by the allies or captured by them to prevent that would have already been in German possession and thus couldn't be counted as gains.
      As for Britain, one must factor in that even if the home islands surrendered, how many of the ships, especially ones already out on a mission, would have sailed to Iceland and then to Canada or the US and carried on the fight? The British navy has proud tradition that they wouldnt so easily abandon. Its also very believable that an british ports, support infrastructure, and raw materials for ship building would be destroyed that they couldn't be used by Germany. Finally, even the ships that they would have gotten would have only been safe for use on the european half of the Atlantic because they would have no safe harbor on the American half of the Atlantic refuel and make repairs at.
      Reasonably it would take germany 5 years to build a surface fleet from which they could make an invasion for the reason previously stated plus 2 more. 1. By the end of that 5 year period the US would have the bomb, and possibly several of them. 2. The US would have achieved victory over Japan and freed up all of the fleets, divisions, and resources that were being used over there for defense of the east coast

    The problem with Hirohito's decision is that a number of Japanese citizens lived in the JPS, he could not expect them all to uproot their lives especially those decendant from people who fought to take it. In our history, Hirohito was concerned for the safety of his people when the US occupied Japan and expressed a desire not to see them punished for his decisions as their leader.
    What he should have proposed was a transition, similar to what the British did for Hong Kong, initially grant the JPS autonomy to hold elections, the BCR can even run as a political party if they choose to. This would be on the condition that any citizens who wish to leave are given safe conduct to do so and those who wish to stay are not punished. This would be beneficial in the long run with the JPS perhaps being willing to stay out of any conflict against Japan in the future seeing as how they would have to contend with the Reich next door.

    The BCR should have brokered a deal: withdrawal of Japanese military forces from the Western States AND guaranteed autonomous protectorate in return for continued oil supplies to Japan. It's not exactly a Second American Revolution because they have an ambitiously hostile neighbour on the doorstep in the form of the Third Reich, which has vast numbers of troops and resources - in comparison to a Great Britain having to fight, support, and supply an overseas campaign against the US Congress during the late 18th Century. Even then, despite a distance crossing thousands of nautical miles, British redcoats inflicted some terrible defeats upon the Americans, not forgetting the latter's cause required help from the French navy and some land forces. But, whoever is leading the Reich in North America, the BCR are at a serious disadvantage no matter how noble their cause, nor how bravely they fight, due to limited manpower, serious lack of weapons and ammo, and shortage of food and infrastructure. With Japan's absence, this scenario of the Reich swooping down like an eagle with talons outstretched to claim more territory is very likely. The first tactical step was a clever move by the BCR: cripple the Japanese economy by destroying key oil supplies and rigs, hold them to ransom, going back to one of the main reasons (the other was imperialism) why Japan committed to World War 2 in the first place - but the BCR should have thought through about what happens AFTER. With the occupation also goes any chance of much stronger protection against a rival superpower: a double-edged katana!

      @@GrayCatbird1 The overall policy of publicity and disclosure went up in all modern japanese history. Remember that in 1871 the first photo of the Emperor was taken - a step unprecedented in modern history. Later, these photos were enforced in all public places just like in arab countries nowadays. So of course the publicity will go up anyways. And the online footage ensures that everyone gets the message and there is no talks about "abandoning" or "treason". Remember - ultranationalist forces were pretty much active from 1920s onwards. Several coup attempts were made. Sometimes, these nationalists assasinated several high-rank officers. They even threatened Yamamoto to start the war with the US. So of course, His Majesty directly addressing all citizens can dispel all gossips and prevent such nationalist coups or provocations. This is needed for the stability of the nation.

      Actually this would very much happen. The entire story before is that the emperor sends his sister or niece to america to get an impression of what the situation actually is instead of the stuff the military tells him. As in reality the japanease state structure is an absolute mess and would take hours to explain meaning the emperor was not an absolute monarch in the way we in the west know it as and the military basically ran everything on a daily basis. However do to the complex system of power the emeror still had a lot of power if he wanted to use it under certain conditions. His word was binding but he had to be apolitical during his council meetings. Its why the emperor basically always spoke in poems or remained silent. The military usually uderstood the emperors words and references....the way they liked it, not the way they might have been intended
      However a public statemeant is something the military can not understand any other way as a direct command to follow the word directly. Especially to the average soldier it was basically a command from god. Its why in our time the moment the emperor made his speech all resistance in japan ceased immediatly and depsite allied fears of guerillas and hardliners there was non of the sort during the occupation. The military hardliners that wanted to c0ontinue the war even stormed the imperial palace shoretly before the broadcast to stop it being made public. They didnt want to kill or overthrow the emperor, they didnt want his word whichw as law becoming public because for them it made the end of their power and their world.
      Imperial Japan was really interesting and very different then any ither countrys political system at that point in time.

      It's unclear whether it is a production error or the Japanese government eventually changed the laws. But it's true that before the defeat of Japan in the WW2, the Emperor of Japan was considered a sacred figure as the descendant of the Goddess of Sun Amaterasu therefore he never spoke in front of the public and even wasn't allowed to be seen in person by the ordinary citizens.
      However, it would be interesting if this series also showed some of the Japanese figures during the WW2 most particularly those who were considered war criminals like Hideki Tojo and Tomoyuki Yamashita (where in this alternate timeline they were most likely never tired for their crimes).

Not the air strike and super death bomb plans or concentration camps-a straight up hostile takeover seige that'd scare Berlin, and make them back off. Cut to a good amount of years later showing how everyone's efforts-the good and the bad-resulted in the world still being "saved" thanks to the knowledge and power of hope and the truth of the tapes from "the man in the high castle" from the other worlds. Also probably looted US Weapons when the US retook Hawaii at 1st around. In this reality the Axis would had to conquered and formed alliances with the same countries the allies did in our world. The Allies won by 1st forming alliances with leaders previously pro axis or neutral. Then the battles. In the high castle the axis did the same thing. Western South America hosted the Japanese and its puppets. Also it took a few years to formulate a plan to conquer the USA and Canada.

    I don't know why the Japanese didn't go scorched Earth. It's not like the free states would've benefited the Japanese in anyway. If anything, it would've proved to only be a greater threat to the Japanese empire as the Germans would've quickly annexed the west coast and established silos from there capable of threatening more of the Japanese fleet

      @@lawsharland7278 Japanese imperialism in many parts was more in comparison with the European empires. The British continued native aristocracy and society in many cases as to more easily exploit these areas, Japan maintained collaborative regimes which ultimately served Japanese corporations. Wage slavery to the point of basically being slavery in Japan or actual ethnic slavery in Germany, hard pick.

    America on east and west coast developing for over a generation with separate political systems will not reunite peacefully though. Japan had a much more enlightened view of things while the former nazi america isn't necessarily national socialist, it does believe in eugenics and segregation. It took generations to expunge such ideologies and was often done by executive action by president like LBJ.
    This scenario is gonna see a much less enlightened and more populus eastern america march over west coast america. Making people of color and minorities wonder if some sort of enlightened third option existed where they could still be Japan's allies just not puppets.

      Japan murdered thousands of Chinese babies, women and old men; raped uncounted numbers of Chinese and Korean women and with their Unit 731 performed live human "testing" every bit as hellish and unimaginably horrific as Nazis did... But yeah totally more "enlightened."
