SUPER helpful video. My issue at first was I wasn't creating the folders in the usb drive itself and kept running into file update errors on the PS4. Rewatched and found what I was missing. All is running way smoother, and faster!
Thanks! But please correct your title. You are upgrading a PS4 PRO! Both the PS4 and PS4 SLIM have different HDD access, and neither have rear USB ports. I'm sending you $10 thanks tho because your video still made me realise that the PS4 Slim at least also blocks regular USB sticks from being electrically-inserted - as in you think it's in but the PS4 cover is blocking the USB cover from letting the contacts insert far enough. Absolutely ridiculous and I bet many have thought their PS4s were bricked because of this. I don't know about the PS4 [original] but with the Slim you have no option but to get a USB HUB / extension cable / skinny stick. I just happened to have a skinny stick laying around, but 98% of USB sticks will not fit!!!
Thanks so much! Yeah I upgraded a ps4 pro but the same general process applies for the pro, regular, slim, etc. That said, yeah the fitment of the USB might vary. I'm glad the video helped you!

quick question jeff... i want to change hard drive my ps4 pro to ssd,but i have game i purchase from ps store,if i follow ur method, can i re download again my game that i purchase ?
Hello sir, Quick question I currently have a 4TB external hdd for my ps4 where all my games including the one I play the most (mw3) are located, if I purchased and installed a new SSD like you did in the video and then connect my hdd back to my ps4 will the game times still load as slow as it did with the old old drive that came with my PlayStation? Or will I have to move the game to the actually SSD drive to notice a difference in game play?
One of the first things I did when I got my PS4 Pro in '18 was toss a WD 2TB SSD in it. I have no idea what loading times on PS4 are like with the standard drive as I've only ever experienced it with a SSD. It should also be noted that there are benefits to gameplay as textures/new areas make use of the SSD's quick loading too - Digital Foundry covered this a few years back also.
So, when you download the data from the console does it also save all of the data from the other profiles as well or is it just the main profile that it saves?
@@TechnicallyJeff it still sounds like a jet though, I’ve clean everything and added a new hard drive. I ordered some MX-6 thermal paste and some pads, I’ll deal with this noise issue next week lol.
The console reinstallation file is pretty small, so basically any USB drive will be big enough. That said, if you want to use the same USB drive to back up other things, you can get bigger ones. But even a small 16 gb one would be big enough for just the console reinstallation file.
I put in a 2TB SSD on my PS4 Pro and at first it didn't work. Then I realized I downloaded the "install" file instead of the reinstall file. Then it worked.
Hi! Thanks for that useful video. I just have one question : I don't have a backup drive that is big enough, and I heard that you can use your PS+ account to backup your date before restoring, but I didn't see it as an option in your video. Can you help me?
Honestly yeah you can back up your data. Personally I'd just get a 128 gb usb drive and just use that for the main stuff, then restore from backup your games and game save data.
Happy to help. Backing up was in this video. I used a USB drive. Just select the items you want to back up. I decided to just re-download a lot of apps instead of backing them up.
Hey Jeff, was wondering if I've screwed myself. I purchased a 500 GB SSD, as I'm in Canada, and spent $90 on it and realized I can't restore as I've got over 600 GB to restore. Can I put my original 1 TB hardrive back into console, and redo the process? Thanks
can you tell me about 1 (for the backup USB, what is the format? FAT32, NTFS, exFAT?) and 2 (did i need to backup the game (not a game data) ? can i install after replace to SSD, cause waste too much time)
Sorry I'm a bit late here, but was wondering if replacing with an SSD is going to prolong the life of system? The shorter load times nice and all. Thanks for the help.
If im fine with my current save gb amount do i need a big external or wont matter? 😅basically when using SSD does it download all game from already installed or acts independent
The external won't really speed anything up since it has to be transferred over usb. If you get a SSD internal, it will speed up load times since everything is saved there. And you can back up games that are already installed or just reinstall them. I reinstalled them to save time on the backup process.
How have you found the 870 evo so far?? I wanted to upgrade with the 860 evo, but cannot find anymore.. I have heard that the 870 evo have been having a lot of issues and failing really fast on people??
Hi i just bought the ssd but was wondering the life time of the ssd in general? Am i going to need to replace it anytime soon? Also i bought a flash drive with fat 36 format and 3.1 usb. Is that ok?
SSDs generally last a while if you get a reputable brand like Samsung. It depends on usage, but generally 5-8 years is expected. And yeah fat32 should be fine.
My question is if I factory reset ps4 can I put a ssd in and it work fine without the computer 🖥 download part because I don't have internet 🤔BCause I don't want to upgrade to the next system I just want to upgrade the memory and performance.
Thank you for the video! I have a USB docking station and I was wondering if I could just do the backup directly to a new drive in my docking station and then install it in the PS4? It would save a step.
i have a question i have a P210 1TB used it on ps4 pro it was my replacement because the og hard drive broke and it kept deleting stuff and after 2 years it started lagging and now that i did an upgrade at my ps4 the games kept repeating the same voice lines and then my ps4 closed i did everything at the safe mode menu nothing worked and i was thinking that maybe this was for ps4 slim and not ps4 pro? i don't know i asked someone and told me to get this hard drive. so because it wasn't opening anymore i decided it to remove the P210 and put my old hard drive and it worked for now i least i don't even have this ps4 for 5 years how did it break that fast like in 2 years it started breaking
I have a question is there a way to buy a ssd with the ps4 part already download? Where I live in don't have internet or have access to a computer in order to update the drive ?
Question about profiles and losing data. I have my Main profile for me, and I added a few local profiles for my kids. Will I loose the stuff (saves and trophies) from my the kids profiles if they are just local profiles?
Hmm that's a good question. I haven't personally tested that. Playstation's site talks about syncing trophies with the PSN. There is a note though on Playstation's website stating "Please note, users who have never signed in to PlayStation™Network (PSN) can restore saved data to only the original PS4 console that was backed up. To restore saved data to another PS4 console, you must sign in to PSN before backing up data." Since the new drive makes it like a new PS4, I think it could cause an issue. Hi my ps4 pro harddisk make flickering sound and I think it is gone . I connected to pc but it won’t recognise any drive . So I believe I have to do new fresh installation without back up correct? With no back up . Thanks
I took PS4 Pro apart--cleaned out thoroughly with an air can as well m, it was nit super dusty or dirty but no fan noise at all --but now COD freezes on me on and off-upon turning it on, and here and there while the game is on, character freezes then it straightens out in about 30 seconds again…..but when I try to turn off PS4, it does not turn itself off now…I have to unplug it to turn it off….should I just get a PS5 slim and be over with it.

Hi there. So my ssd came today. I installed it, chose reinstall, named it PS4, created another folder UPDATE, then copied the file to UPDATE, and called it PS4UPDATE.PUP put ps4 in safe mode and chose option 7. Then error message its corrupt showed up. Tried a different thumb drive this time it said file not found. Any suggestions? It would be appreciated. I don't need to plug external hd where my backup is do I? Thanks
Did you download the console reinstallation file? And when you say you named it PS4, did you rename your thumb drive PS4 or did you create a folder in the thumb drive like I did and name it PS4?
@TechnicallyJeff I really enjoyed your vid. I have one question, do I need to download the Update file to the USB stick or can I use the Safe Mode menu to download the update from there?
Probably a silly question but i have a spare ssd that has files from my pc on it. Should i wipe it first? Or partition it? Will the PlayStation do all of that for me? Thank you for the very informative video!!!!
I installed one New ssd. Worked fine for a night. Next day I came with storage Access error. Installed a new one. Same error. Back to my mechanical drive until I can figure it out
@TechnicallyJeff one was a samsung QVO 2tb. But i believe i found the issue... After the fresh installation, i put my library to download. Works fine, and i was even able to play a few games. But after that, i pick my usb with all my save files and feed it all in the fresh install. Regardless of the game being downloaded or not. It is possible that it might create a lot of corrupt data, maybe ? I do not know enough of the ps4 memory allocation to affirm it. Will dormat it all again and try it and see what i get.
@TechnicallyJeff yes i do. I believe that copying all the save files and downloading the games created the issue. Later today, when i get back from work, i will start from scratch and see how it dances. Download each game, and only after that i will I move my old save files in
It should improve those speeds since the read/write off the drive is much faster. I just had a pretty big update to mw3 and it copied it in much less than an hour.
@TechnicallyJeff Thank you for the reply. The problem is the "someone did" but we never know who. hahaha... I have several games installed on the stock disk that I dont want to loose... I will investigate more. Thank you

I just got the same exact SSD, plugged it in and tried installing the PS software but it failed. Do i have to format the SSD first? It's basically stuck at initializing and never loading the installation itself. Any idea?
If I install the regular HDD back into to my ps4 pro do I have to install the software again on it with the USB drive or can I just take out the ssd and install the old hdd back
Thanks, really helpful video!! I only have one question. If I'm using an external HDD for extra storage for my games, after I start using the internal SSD, the games inside the external HDD are going to run from there? Or is the internal SSD the one that will run all the system and games no matter where they are located? If do upgrade to SSD i should stop using the external HDD for games to profit from the SSD upgrade? I'm not sure how that works :(
I'm glad it's helpful! The games run from wherever they are installed. I would recommend getting a fairly large internal (this 2tb is only $120 - amzn.to/3STKw2M). And if you need it, an external SSD. Otherwise you wouldn't see the gains you'd expect with the internal SSD and an external HDD.
What an excellent video! Will definitely help me in upgrading to an SSD in my PS4. Thanx! =) Do you, or anyone else, happen to know if the backup will restore my themes aswell? I have some PS4 themes that can't be acquired anymore that I'd love to keep.
Thank you! I'm glad it's helpful! I haven't personally looked into backing up the theme, but from what I found if you back everything up it will transfer the theme along with the other data.
@@TechnicallyJeff Allright, sounds good! Some sources apparently sais that themes can be downloaded again, since they are accountbound. Even if they can't be bought again, or are removed from the store. So I should be good then. Thanx again 😊
hi, i want ask. i have my beloved ps4 fat (buy it when first release and still in good condition). i really rare play games at this console after i found more interesting games in PC. but after taste the power of ssd, make me consider to change my ps4 1tb hdd to ssd (found cheap samsung ssd evo 860 2tb, don't know worth or not because i heard only samsung ssd who will work for ps4). but my friend who already change his ps4 fat to ssd 1tb tell me its not worth since the differences in single player games loading only 3 sec (the online give huge difference, but i'm not play online game in ps4). do you think i still need change my ps4 fat to ssd, or keep to original 1tb drive? (since i heard using ssd in ps4 not good because ssd need power for time to time, and if not used for long it will broke). sorry for long question.
Hey good questions. I definitely recommend switching to a SSD. It's not very expensive. I have an 870 evo in the video. The 860 evo is great too. And single player games are where you'd see the biggest difference in load times since it's able to load the map and everything quicker than a hard drive. I do see good speed increases in regular multiplayer too. But yeah, I definitely recommend it. As for power, I haven't heard of issues with the PS4 using a SSD. They actually use less power than a hard drive.
@@TechnicallyJeff So its best to pick 870 evo 1tb than 860 evo 2tb? It have same price. And i don't really know much about the two, but i see review its basically same the different 860 Evo already discontinued and maybe don't have warranty again.
@@TechnicallyJeffokay i consider it to change ssd now. I try in my friends ps4 fat ssd for gta v it give loading difference 10 sec, in rdr2, only 4 sec, but i. Genshin impact online game it like give 30 sec faster.

Concerning the online game loading, I think your console has to wait for the other players to have their slow HDD PS4 to be loaded.
I think that is a part of it. Though I have been playing ranked lately and it loads into the matches REALLY fast. Like within 5-10 seconds.
Correction, as of COD:CW, everyone loads in at similar speeds and it just waits for the last person, so if someone is slow, everyone waits.

Glad to help!
thank you very helpful video how did you back up your hard drive have you got a video on that
Happy to help. Backing up was in this video. I used a USB drive. Just select the items you want to back up. I decided to just re-download a lot of apps instead of backing them up.
Does changing your hdd means getting log out from your psn account even after you restored the data?
honestly i don't recall if i had to login again
Thanks for the video,I have question : the usb drive with the update ps4 file, what type of disc format was set? Exfat ?
I believe so, but honestly it's supposed to work with exFAT or FAT32
Hey Jeff, was wondering if I've screwed myself. I purchased a 500 GB SSD, as I'm in Canada, and spent $90 on it and realized I can't restore as I've got over 600 GB to restore. Can I put my original 1 TB hardrive back into console, and redo the process? Thanks
Oh that sucks. Yeah you should be able to do that. Maybe get a 2tb to be safe.
DONT FORGET AFTER INSTALLING THE OS SYSTEM BACK AND YOUR IN SETUP TO REMOVE THAT USB BEFORE RESTARTING AGAIN TO AVOID CORRUPTION
Oh yeah?
@TechnicallyJeff never know people might leave it there and when they update and restart the Playstation might corrupt windows again
Yeah probably smart
Thanks so much for your guide!
Glad to help!
can you tell me about
1 (for the backup USB, what is the format? FAT32, NTFS, exFAT?) and
2 (did i need to backup the game (not a game data) ? can i install after replace to SSD, cause waste too much time)
FAT32 or exFAT. And yeah if you can reinstall the game, that's fine. I did that for most of my games. I just redownloaded them.
Sorry I'm a bit late here, but was wondering if replacing with an SSD is going to prolong the life of system? The shorter load times nice and all. Thanks for the help.
It should. It runs cooler and has less moving parts to fail, unlike the hard drive.
@@TechnicallyJeff that's enough for me. Thanks for the reply, you just got yourself a new subscriber. 😊
Just wondering if 1 Gb is enough to dl the software?
Thank you!
The reinstallation software is right around 1gb. You might need at least 2gb to be safe. Honestly I'd recommend just using a usb drive.
Oh really? Mine has been great. No issues whatsoever. It has a lot of good reviews too.
@@TechnicallyJeff sorry yeah I mean fat32 lol. Thank you for answering
I figured 😀 glad to help!
My question is if I factory reset ps4 can I put a ssd in and it work fine without the computer 🖥 download part because I don't have internet
🤔BCause I don't want to upgrade to the next system I just want to upgrade the memory and performance.
No you need the reinstallation file
Thanks for the detailed tutorial video 😊🎉❤
I'm glad to help! 😀
This is Awesome thanx Jeff - quick question, did you have to reformat the ssd drive to fat32 or exfat before you did the install?
I did not, but mine already was. The instructions for the reinstallation file say it needs to be fat32 or exfat so if yours is ntfs i'd reformat it.
Thank you sir!
Glad to help!
I did not back up mine just put a new one in and now system software won’t install 😢
You should be able to do the reinstallation software
Can not find update file (su-41350-3)
@@TechnicallyJeffI did that but can’t find it
Only has initialize ps4 on safe mode , can’t select any of the other one
Hmm did you format the usb drive?
Do i download the ps4 console file to the same usb drive as I backed up my data? Or a different USB.
You should be able to. Just make sure to select the right file.
Thank you for the video! I have a USB docking station and I was wondering if I could just do the backup directly to a new drive in my docking station and then install it in the PS4? It would save a step.
I believe you can. I haven't tested that, but I have heard of people doing similar things.
Thank you for the reply. I'm going to try it. @@TechnicallyJeff
Good luck!
i have a question i have a P210 1TB used it on ps4 pro it was my replacement because the og hard drive broke and it kept deleting stuff and after 2 years it started lagging and now that i did an upgrade at my ps4 the games kept repeating the same voice lines and then my ps4 closed i did everything at the safe mode menu nothing worked and i was thinking that maybe this was for ps4 slim and not ps4 pro? i don't know i asked someone and told me to get this hard drive. so because it wasn't opening anymore i decided it to remove the P210 and put my old hard drive and it worked for now i least i don't even have this ps4 for 5 years how did it break that fast like in 2 years it started breaking
Hmm that's weird. I haven't looked at the P210 though. Honestly sounds like just a failed drive. The same size drives work in the PS4 slim and pro.
I have a question is there a way to buy a ssd with the ps4 part already download? Where I live in don't have internet or have access to a computer in order to update the drive ?
Eh you could maybe pay someone to do it and ship it to you
Thanks for the help!

Check this - www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps4-back-up-and-restore-with-external-storage/
It works perfect, I have 8 profiles in my ps4 and the restoration was with the profiles too.
@Eliocall awesome glad to hear it
this was simple and easy, thank you.
My PS4 version is 9.00, when i reinstall the full software, should i install the UPDATE 9.00 or Higher ?
Glad to help. I'd just install the latest personally.
aah i see, thak you very much@@TechnicallyJeff
No problem!
If you have 9.00 and you DON'T update, you can jailbreak your ps4 and it will read free games
It will read free games?
Hi how is the samsung 870 evo ssd ive read on the Internet that alot of them a failing before 2021 of manufacture
I've had no issue at all
thank jeff im now going to replace my hard drive on my ps4
Nice! I definitely recommend it. It's a nice, easy upgrade.
Hi my ps4 pro harddisk make flickering sound and I think it is gone . I connected to pc but it won’t recognise any drive . So I believe I have to do new fresh installation without back up correct? With no back up . Thanks
Yeah it doesn't sound like a back up would be successful. You can redownload games and game save data.
Hmm that's weird having those issues. Have you replaced the hard drive with a SSD?
@@TechnicallyJeffno I just ordered today m…the sane one you gave us on your channel, cones in Wednesday….i thought all I had to do, is pull out the hard drive install the new Samsung and wait for load up. I will send this video to myself…wish me luck please 👍🏽
Ahh gotcha. Hopefully the SSD fixes it. Good luck! Mine is working great still 😀
Once you get to the initial set can you take the usb drive out for good and do normal setup?
Yes you can

You need the reinstallation file on the usb drive
Does this also solve the “data corrupted” issue? …. I was told by a local electronics store to change my ps4 pro hard disc in order to fix this issue
I haven't had that issue
Probably a silly question but i have a spare ssd that has files from my pc on it. Should i wipe it first? Or partition it? Will the PlayStation do all of that for me? Thank you for the very informative video!!!!
Personally I recommend formatting it first to clear it out and make sure there are no issues. And I'm glad it's helpful!
@@TechnicallyJeff Awesome! Thank you for the info!
Glad to help!
Will this help with loading graphical textures fast in Warzone? That's the biggest problem I have with Warzone PS4.
Yeah mine definitely load faster.
I have question i see you didn't used a mount on the ssd do you have to use a mount do I need to get mount for ssd
No you don't need one. It goes in place of the regular hard drive.
How much space do you need on that usb drive when updating that file for reinstalling it?
Not a lot from what I recall. A 32 gb drive should be enough.
I installed one New ssd. Worked fine for a night. Next day I came with storage Access error. Installed a new one. Same error. Back to my mechanical drive until I can figure it out
Hmm I wonder what the issue is. What ssd did you get?
@TechnicallyJeff one was a samsung QVO 2tb. But i believe i found the issue...
After the fresh installation, i put my library to download.
Works fine, and i was even able to play a few games.
But after that, i pick my usb with all my save files and feed it all in the fresh install. Regardless of the game being downloaded or not.
It is possible that it might create a lot of corrupt data, maybe ? I do not know enough of the ps4 memory allocation to affirm it.
Will dormat it all again and try it and see what i get.
The QVO should be solid. Hmm yeah that could be possible. That's what I and many others did though. After you restore you take out your usb right?
@TechnicallyJeff yes i do. I believe that copying all the save files and downloading the games created the issue.
Later today, when i get back from work, i will start from scratch and see how it dances.
Download each game, and only after that i will I move my old save files in
Good luck!
Will doing this upgrade speed up download speeds? Specifically copying? No matter the file size my console nearly takes an hour to copy a game update
It should improve those speeds since the read/write off the drive is much faster. I just had a pretty big update to mw3 and it copied it in much less than an hour.
Do I need two USB sticks or I can use my external hard drive for the back up file and the system software
You can use just one. I used one usb drive.
aside from the location and way of accessing the hard disk drive, is this process the same for all ps4 models
Also, do you download the reinstallation file in the same USB that you backed up the ps4 in??
Yes it's the same and I used the same one
Hello. I just swapped out my harddrive and everything seemed to work just fine until after the initialization now im stuck on a black screen
Hmm you installed the console reinstallation software?
Hello!
Is it possible to make an image of the stock disk and write it on the destination disk for the PS4 detect it as the old drive?
Some people have said they were able to clone their drive. Personally I haven't tried that with the PS4.
@TechnicallyJeff Thank you for the reply. The problem is the "someone did" but we never know who. hahaha... I have several games installed on the stock disk that I dont want to loose... I will investigate more. Thank you
Try going through the comments. I'm pretty sure someone has commented they did that at some point in the last couple of years haha.
if i did not backup, would i still find my purchases\games when i sign in with my account?
Yes you could re-download digital ones. I did that for some.
What are some well priced ssds that are compatible with the PS4 pro?
There are a lot on Amazon. Personally I recommend the Samsung I linked in the description.
I have one question can i upgrade my ps 4 pro internal storage from 1TB to 8TB? Because i have an 8TB SSD
I'm not sure an 8tb ssd will fit inside. Do you know the dimensions?
Yes 8 tb is the maximum size storage and it will work if it's a 2.5 inch form factor hoped that helped you.
As long as it's not too thick
Do ps4 have automatic update even without a backup file? I don't have a spare usb for backing up update files for ps4.
Also do external ssd and installed ssd runs the same performance?
No you need a drive to install the operating system on the new drive
No the external helps, but not everything is written to it. Internal is best
i just ordered me a Samsung 870 1tb, this will be my first time doing this upgrade soo hopefully i dont mess up my system
Nice! You should be fine. Just follow what I did 😀

Yeah? Clone it completely with no issues and have the PS4 recognize it? If that's possible and not difficult, why isn't that the recommend method? lol
Obviously, you always want a back up, but certainly you understand what a clone is? If I have to explain this to you, you should change your name to just Jeff. @@TechnicallyJeff
Haha I do. I just don't see people cloning PS4 hard drives to SSDs. Usually it's a method like I shared. Why wouldn't cloning it be the preferred way?
Hi, great video! I followed the same steps but for some reason I can't get the controller to move to the "Ok" option on the "Connect a USB storage device" screen though it does recognize when I press enter or back. Any tips?

My hdd broke, and wanna chance with ssd, but how about my save data? will it disappear? 😭😭
Was your data backed up to the cloud with playstation plus? If so, you should be able to re-download it.
@@TechnicallyJeff nah, I subscribed 4 months ago 😭
If you subscribed you should have game data backed up. You can download games you've purchased too.
Thanx! =)
Do you, or anyone else, happen to know if the backup will restore my themes aswell? I have some PS4 themes that can't be acquired anymore that I'd love to keep.
Thank you! I'm glad it's helpful! I haven't personally looked into backing up the theme, but from what I found if you back everything up it will transfer the theme along with the other data.

hi, i want ask.
i have my beloved ps4 fat (buy it when first release and still in good condition). i really rare play games at this console after i found more interesting games in PC.
but after taste the power of ssd, make me consider to change my ps4 1tb hdd to ssd (found cheap samsung ssd evo 860 2tb, don't know worth or not because i heard only samsung ssd who will work for ps4). but my friend who already change his ps4 fat to ssd 1tb tell me its not worth since the differences in single player games loading only 3 sec (the online give huge difference, but i'm not play online game in ps4). do you think i still need change my ps4 fat to ssd, or keep to original 1tb drive?
@@TechnicallyJeff
So its best to pick 870 evo 1tb than 860 evo 2tb? It have same price. And i don't really know much about the two, but i see review its basically same the different 860 Evo already discontinued and maybe don't have warranty again.
@ryanmalik3378 right the 870 is newer
