This almost made me cry seeing this whole thing. My dad passed away last year, and we had a 1965 Skylark that he owned since he was 16. I don't know a lot about cars beyond the basics, and I'm definitely not financially capable of restoring it. It's rough, it's been sitting since 2002 in the yard and is starting to show some bad signs of rust. Seeing this really makes me want to do what I can to fix it, but I'm just so clueless. I've learned a lot from watching your channel and I'm confident I could get it started and running again with a day or two of effort, but I wouldn't even begin to know where to go from there. The interior is shot, it's sitting on 3 flats, I don't know half of where any of the wiring or tubes go or what they do. After seeing this, I'm starting to think I'd regret selling it, but I'm also regretting letting it sit and rot not doing anything with it. I'd love to see it on the road again, and I know it's a solid vehicle... at least it was 20 years ago... My father rebuilt the engine from the ground up when he was in high school. I wish I had more time in the day, and I wish he was still here to restore it like we planned a few years ago.
At the end of the day it just takes money. Either way it takes money. Do some looking around and see if you can find a good mechanic to do the bare minimum to save it.

I am 70 yo now. I was raised by my grandparents. They bought a '55 Roadmaster off the showroom in NJ. Moved to FL in '57, when I was 7. It was blk w/wht roof. Made more than one road trip standing up in the front seat between them, my grandma had a death grip on my legs all the way. Strange way of thinking back in the '50s. Your reference 'like sitting on your grandma's couch' struck a heart string. Thanks for the reminder of the delicate, simple truth that we all held so dear. God Bless.
Hello, ever since I was a little girl, I'm 52yr now, I've always wanted an "old car", to me from the 50's, but not a 55 Chevy everybody has. I found a 1950 Pontiac Silverstreak Chieftain w/2dr hardtop, straight 8 engine, and light up Indian hood ornament for $200 w/ my largest paycheck. I named her Christine after the movie because when my stepdad put the 6volt battery in, I came out one night and sat inside, happy to have my first car. I turned on the radio and the song "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley!!😍 She can talk to me thru the radio!! She's been sitting at my friend's for 30+ yrs now. Because of life's roller-coaster I couldn't get to her. Now I'm remarried with more than $200 that I can bring her to me. I really want her to start up like this gentleman revives these older cars from the fields or salvage yards!! I hope he sees my post and send an email to reach him. When Christine wakes up and I turn on her radio, I know she'll sing some love song from somebody, singing🎶"What Took You 🎶So Long To 🎶Come Back 🎶To Me!!"🎶😍
@@elmerlindsay9584 It seems like his father started with him as a young boy to learn about cars, especially with these older cars his father knew alot about. @@eileenheitman4351 Funny you should mention the v-max because that the first new street bike I bought in 1986, my father co signed for me. I tore that bike up drag racing the streets of Chicago then sold it about 6 years later. Very powerful for it's time, the drive shaft effect could get you killed in tight turns though, I almost learned that the hard way. The fact that your still riding yours is awesome because we both know it is not the most comfortable bike on long highway trips.
I graduated from high school in 1963. I bought a 1961 Falcon Futura soon after. I recently found one just like it on eBay. White with red bucket seats, 3 on the tree!💕. Well I watched you pick up this car and decided as a 79 year old woman I probably shouldn’t try to buy this sweet memory. Love your channel. I’ve learned a lot from you.
That fact that your able to talk about this car and the memories of it and your dad, all while keeping your sense of humor. This is such a great channel lol
I am real happy you got your family car back. A lot of people don't get that opportunity. I am currently frame up rebuilding a 61 MG-A with my Dad and Grandpa. Worth every cold dirty day in that garage. And I have learned, it never gets sold because I'll regret it.

UA-cam suggested I watch this for about the 13.2nd time so I did the right thing and said “Yep!” on this fine Wednesday night. Every time I see the ol girl in the background of your vidyas I’m thankful that she’s back in the family.
That car is beautiful! I've seen it in the background of newer videos and had to find out the story - turns out the story is beautiful too. The significance of this car to you and your family makes it irreplaceable. It's amazing that it survived until you found it again. There's magic and madness in that body, and the colour scheme inside and out is stunning. It's interesting to see that your history with the Restored gentlemen isn't just a modern collaboration too. The music, the journey, the humour and effort involved... it's a really lovely package that I get to just sit on my backside and enjoy, letting it spark my imagination or desire. Absolutely love your adventures, attitude and the treasure you find along the way.
The most beautiful runnig motor I ever experienced was a 1970 cad. 472? It was a low mileage rescue job. The car was a beige on biege? Boat but the engine was sweet. After scraping out the Pensoil and or Quacker State and putting in castrol 20-50 the engine began to guiet down. Then it smoothed out. You could cruise at 85 but at 70 the engine would purr. A powerful but beautiful purring sound... amazing. Thinking back now... I put new AC Delco plugs in,The old ones were carbon fouled. I set the carb to lean best idle, most old cars were set to rich because no1 understood carbon/ heat etc..Also the timing was allways set to far advanced, because lime the air/ feul mixture it sounded better to the untrained ear.
As much as I enjoy watching you pull 'em out of the weeds, this is my favorite video so far, Derek. With the history of that car, being able to get your hands on it again and bring it back into the family for keeps is an incredible story.

He calmly and methodically solves The problems that are impossible to predict - the problems arising from corrosion, wear and tear, rot, etc. The result is just a tonic for the soul! Kudos and God bless!
Ha. My son wasn't particularly into cars a lot either, but he said, 'come here Mom, watch this', and now I really can't stop watching either 🤷🏻♀️
This one has less mechanical issues and more heartfelt substance.❤
Love Dad connection
Love this Derek! I don’t have any memories like this with my dad, but I’m sure doing my darndest to make them with my son!
True that James. My father was never around when I was growing up but I have two boys 3 and 4 years old and I'm gonna make darn sure i can teach them all I know about cars and wrenching. Love how Derek gets his kids involved in some of his projects. And watching what Derek does gives me pointers so hopefully my boys dont end up being braindead and stuck to their phones when they get older.
I'm rowing that same boat. No Dad around to get those great memories but sure did my best for my boys. I always say, it not the car or project its the story behind it.
Thats all you can do. ...
The Car wash just about killed me I laughed so hard I cried.
Great edit as per usual. Great Derek moment.
For real! I back it up several times!
Oml he went "over all that went really good"!😂😭
Dude i was dyin.....
😆🤣
I am 70 yo now. I was raised by my grandparents. They bought a '55 Roadmaster off the showroom in NJ. Moved to FL in '57, when I was 7. It was blk w/wht roof. Made more than one road trip standing up in the front seat between them, my grandma had a death grip on my legs all the way. Strange way of thinking back in the '50s.
Your reference 'like sitting on your grandma's couch' struck a heart string. Thanks for the reminder of the delicate, simple truth that we all held so dear. God Bless.
Ya wonder how he got started or what he does with all the cars!
That father-son bond was, and obviously still is, a cherished memory that working and fixing these cars can bring back those feelings. I can hear it in his voice during this taping and it's a wonderful thing to know. God bless all of us.
@@andreabelinda1355 There's something very special about that "first car". In 1977 I was 17 & my first
car was a '59 2 door Impala very nice car. I got obsessed with it. We all recall where we were at
August 16,1977 when Elvis died. I heard it on the radio at a stop light in my '59 Impala.
The '59' is my "Christine". The car is history I regret to say I got into a bad accident..
@@WINGGULLSEAGULL Yes, it really is. I've never liked the newest cars. I drove my son's new car and the seats were so hard and controls stiff. Not my 78 Lincoln!!
The leather is broke in and comfy. Controls slide in place, just smooth all over!!
That's a good car wash. I've used it often when I visit home.
I assume him leaving the creator of vice grip garage"" a pair of vice grips was intentional
Definitely intentional! Previous owner wanted that to be. It was a message for sure.
😎
This makes me happy, we all have that one car that got away. The fact you found yours just made my day.
You got a guy tugging At the old heart ❤ strings here. Great vid
Thank you David
A guy truly is his father's son. As my mom would say: "What a sweet boy." Do good things with this car Derek, you deserve it.
I'm happy for a fellar. Getting that car back with all of it's memories and is priceless. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Derek, you can swing us down memory lane anytime you want. Love the story about the Buick and I'm sure most of your other viewers do as well.
I’d have to keep this one, anything with family history is always special.
Its bad ass car.viice grip has a fine car good luck to vvice grip garage.its origenal car.good to see it.its bad ass ride.larry m
That is a beautiful car! I'm glad you got it back. Those memories are extra special and what a legacy to leave for your future generations!
A guy likes seeing two great channels crossing over like this it just warms a guy right in the old blood making happner
Memory Lane is good. We run across certain cars in our life. That make a real impact on us. Cars that bring smiles to our faces.
Cheers
I literally smiled as you walked out to the car !! Very happy for you !
Thank you
Yea congratulations!!!! That's the coolest, I have one 65 chevelle SS that I want back, if it isn't wrecked, I put a nasty 427 in it and did no chassis or anything work, I was young it was the first car I ever bought with my own $
"It's never leavin' my hands again." Thanks a lot for the lump and dew start to my day.
“Someone’s getting arrested, wasn’t me” funny as crap. I absolutely love this guy
thats the local police there....

You know it’s gonna be a damn good evening when vice grip garage uploads a 45 minute video!
Good for you ! Your pa would be proud, he raised a good boy. Take good care of that classic .
All them years, only now I realise how much you gave. You don't need to rethink anything bud. Go with the flow enjoy the kids, missus etc. Regret nothing. You've given me a morale compass that can't be compared. Take care Yank. Jimbo..
I love the fact you got it back! I have my Dads 69 Chevelle. I lost him 3 years ago. Hopefully next summer I will have it in the road again.
Keep after it!
Best Of Luck Cheers.
Amazing story Derek... Thank you for sharing with us
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loving the choice of music for the time lapse driving. Also loving the time lapse driving itself.
Do you know the song title? Beautiful song and very fitting i found. I haven't heard it before.

Nice tunes at 28:40. I enjoyed this episode quite a bit, thanks thanks thanks!
If you’ve lost your dad, you get it. I get it so deeply, Derek. Nice work man.
Same here!

The time-lapse night driving was mesmerizing.
Oh yeah! Somebody know the title of that song please?🥰

Watch this again.. 3 years later...your passion for family and it history is so right here for everyone
Takes me back to when my Dad helped me bring home my first motor cycle. I was 14. Still riding at 68.
My old man helped me do the same to my first used and first new motorbike even though he disliked them.
I’m 71. Still riding. Mine’s a 2005 V-max. I’ll ride till I can’t walk. A stubborn determination serves me well. Be careful, friend
Appreciate you being respectful of the hammer lane. To many people don't understand you aren't supposed to dilly dally around in it.
That's true, either hammer it or hammer off
As Richard Hammond said: it's like a public bathroom. You enter, you do what you're supposed to do and you get out. You don't hang in bathrooms.

This brought me to tears in the first four minutes, and I do not cry often. Love the channel, love what you do. Thank you
Amen!!!
"It is hotter than Shakira's two-piece in here.....". I just died🤣🤣🤣
I inspired him again! The last LeSabre video, I said the rear end was movin' around like Shakiras!
My dad had a 41 Ford when I was growing up. God Knows how I would like to have that back. God Bless you son. You are a true American.
That fact that your able to talk about this car and the memories of it and your dad, all while keeping your sense of humor. This is such a great channel lol
She’s a tuxedo beauty. Thank you for the intro pulled on the heart strings.
110 MPH, Yes!. Right after getting my license in 1965, I managed to get my dad's 4-door 56 Buick up to that number, but with a little shake!
You know, a guy who isn't a gear head, nor a car guy (yet) is surprised at how happy he is whenever a new VGG notification comes.
You’re like me with aviation videos. I’m not interested in flying but enjoy learning about it.
Awesome story Derek! I can’t imagine how good you must feel to get that car back.
I am real happy you got your family car back. A lot of people don't get that opportunity.
I am currently frame up rebuilding a 61 MG-A with my Dad and Grandpa. Worth every cold dirty day in that garage. And I have learned, it never gets sold because I'll regret it.
I'm currently dismantling a 59 mga coup to do a frame up restoration. My mother had a 56 Buick just like that one, but it was baby blue &white. I have missed that car&my mother for several years.
"Miracles in Sight" in the background of this beautiful machine; classic.
Great vid! Great story!
Don't get hood ornaments like that anymore, paint u can swim in, amazing!
I was hoping and praying for a ride along on your adventure to find this special car. Congratulations brother!
She's a beauty, keep her forever🙏
The Buick "Nail Head" was one of the best engines ever manufactured.
Imo it’s one of the greats but will never top the 350 way easier to work on and the mods are endless kinda what the ls is turning into
And the Dynaflow was the WORST auto trans ever!
Ive heard that about every american v8 built and ive heard the opposite when they are being worked on lol.
Apart from the way they overheat an hour after you stop and you come back to see the swimming pool is full now.
@@michaelmcneil4168 FAMOUS for overheating issues. I would strike it right off the 'greatest engines' list.
Memories are what keep car enthusiasts likes us alive. Stories are what we like to hear, about how far the car has come!! Keep history alive man! Coming from MN man bound!
"My dad took a short cut through a field too many old Milwaukees" classic country.
UA-cam suggested I watch this for about the 13.2nd time so I did the right thing and said “Yep!” on this fine Wednesday night. Every time I watch this a fellers eyes get close to sweating at the beginning as you talk about your dad passing away and whatnots. Every time I see the ol girl in the background of your vidyas I’m thankful that she’s back in the family.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Most people have a wish to “have back” a car or motorcycle that we previously owned. Glad you are able to do it.
I have my uncle's 65 Honda CB160. It has 732 miles on it. I road it around town and put it away for my Grandson.
Yes wish I had my first car, but still got my first street bike , got 47 years ago and I still ride it
Keep the wind in your face good brotha
Super happy for a feller to get his dads old car back! She is a beaut!
When that water started coming in the car....I’m still laughing. “Oh it’s bad! Oh NOOO!”
Brilliant video, the family history it’s so interesting for those of us who follow along on your adventures. Thanks for sharing it with us.
So cool to get the old girl back. Brought a tear to my eye when you where talking about the memories. Good job young man!
These 50's Buicks are just...you can't get that kind of styling anymore. 😍
I really hope we get a part two! This is so awesome man!🤘🏼
As much as I enjoy watching you pull 'em out of the weeds, this is my favorite video so far, Derek. With the history of that car, being able to get your hands on it again and bring it back into the family for keeps is an incredible story.
I feel privileged to have shared this journey with you. Thank you Derek.
You’re pulling at my heart strings; I’m 71, Grandad was a machanic, my uncle had a red and white one. Now I don’t remember his model and all, but it was two door. My Uncle Love this thing and always was doing something with it at the Garage. Grandad had a two bay garage, so this big red beast was always in the way. Everyone was light hearted and making jokes about this Buick ‘unSpecial!’ 😂washed in memories. Thanks Derek.
