The Mercury Marauder is an automobile nameplate that was used by three distinct full-size cars produced by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from the most powerful engines available to the Mercury line, the Marauder was marketed as the highest-performance version of the full-size product range.
During its first production run, the Mercury Marauder was a trim option on standard Mercury coupes; the equivalent of the Ford Galaxie 500 and 500/XL, the Marauder was given a "fastback" rear roofline. For the 1966 model year, the Marauder was replaced by the similar Mercury S-55; remaining the counterpart of the 500XL, the S-55 transitioned the Marauder from a trim option to a distinct model.
For its second production run, the Mercury Marauder returned for the 1969 model year as a fastback version of the Mercury Marquis.[1] Designed to bridge the gap between the Mercury Cougar and Continental Mark III, the Mercury Marauder was repackaged as a personal luxury car. After the 1970 model year, the Mercury Marauder was discontinued.
For the 2003 model year, the Mercury Marauder nameplate was revived as a high-performance variant of the full-size Grand Marquis using the Ford Panther platform. After lower than expected sales, the Marauder was discontinued at the end of the 2004 model year. The Mercury Marauder remains the final rear-wheel drive sedan introduced by Ford Motor Company in North America (as of the 2022 model year).
The nameplate marauder is a person engaged in banditry or related activity.
The Mercury Marauder nameplate made its debut as a trim package of each of the four Mercury full-size series, including the Monterey, Montclair, S-55 (1963 only), and Park Lane in the Spring of 1963. For the first time for a mid-year introduction, the Marauder was introduced as a "1963½" model (as was an entire line of new, "sports" models from Ford in many of the existing series). All 1963½ Marauders were hardtops, in both two-door and four-door configurations. The two-door notchback hardtop coupe was listed at US$3,650 ($32,306 in 2021 dollars [4]) and 3,863 were manufactured.
Along with the "sportier" roofline, the Marauder trim package included bucket seats and a center console, similar to its Ford counterpart. However, the base model Marauder came with a front bench seat and a column shift unlike the S-55 package.
For 1964, the availability of Mercury Marauder expanded to four-door hardtops; along with two-doors, four-door hardtops also included a fastback roofline. The "Breezeway" roofline models continued as before.
Shared with the rest of the Mercury sedan line, the Mercury Marauder was powered by Ford "FE-Series" V8 engines, shared with the big Fords and the Thunderbird. A 390 cubic-inch Marauder V8 was standard, with a 427 cubic-inch Super Marauder V8 replacing a 406 V8 in 1964. Along with 3-speed and 4-speed manual transmissions, a 3-speed "Merc-O-Matic" automatic transmission was offered.

I built this when it came out in 1964 I was 12yrs old. painted it maroon. back then all we had was tube glue. didn't have
much in spray paint. the cut out in center of the fire wall is suppose to have a metal clip that attaches to the hood and
keeps the hood up when opened. great build.

Yes, I remember those “c” springs that went up against the firewall and the hood. AMT’s are famous for this spring retention system, and to this day with repop kits like this Merc, there are the tabs molded in place, but NO “C” retention spring.
Its been so long , I can not remember if the MPC, or Revell’s used that same setup.
Sometimes AMT’s “c” spring would just NOT fit correctly and end up tossing the C spring. Wish I would have kept as many as I tossed !

Great job Chris! I cut my teeth on this type kit! And much to my parents “HORROR “ I was cranking these out every couple of weeks, and they would shell out another $1.50 or so for another. It was great fun! Thanks Mom and Dad! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and your review!

I love the old 3 in one kits I built many of them as a kid. what made them great was all the custom parts and the decals. Even if you did not use all the parts it was so cool to have them. That what is missing in the new kits. The Fun Is Missing.

Hi, Chris. I just subscribed to your channel. I'm 72, been building model cars since I was a teenager competing in contests, etc. Covid has gotten me to open up all those old kits I never built, and I've been having fun the last two years. I've seen a lot of super-detailed contest winners, but I agree with your credo of "build it for yourself and have fun." Keep up the good work! 👍

Nice build - GREAT COLOR CHOICE. My last year in school was 1964 and these were popular. The coral paint and white interior is CLASSIC. The "brag" was it has a Police Interceptor Engine. Thanks again, Chris. After I build mine I'll put it in my new portable "cooler box" compressor refrigerator and it will be CHILL. Two videos in one Saturday - we hit the Jackpot!

FYI: Seat belts became standard equipment on all passenger cars for the 1964 model year, by Federal law. They had been optional on some cars since the mid-1950s & only for the front seats.

That said, those custom front and rear ends, along with the wheel covers provided are awesome options that just scream "Retro-Space Age Dream Car!" Really surprised the coral paint did not sell more on the real Mercs, perhaps it was a "Spring Release" (released in April)? Saw exactly two back then. Two years ago a local body shop got one in for a moderate restore and put it uo for sale. I TRIED and simply could not come up with enough momey to even attempt the purchase.
How many times have you wanted, badly, to purchase a car simply because of the color of the paint?
I used Rustolum's coral on my kit. Lot of work...

Have a quick question: Is there a reason (aside maybe from personal preference) why you don't use the Liquid Chrome for the window and windshield trim? When I built models as a kid it bugged me no end that the silver painted exterior trim wasn't as shiny as the chrome parts. Love your builds.
Edit: Never mind, I asked that before I got to the point you explained it. LOL.

Hi Chris, luv the coral color ! I have adopted many many ways to do things for a great turn out.
My question to you, have you ever ran into superglue that just WIL NOT glue things together. Seems like the glue NEVER takes and puts 2 pieces together. Now I know there is spray activator to set the superglue, but most of the time I do not like using a spray to get things to stay together. But the question is : do you ever run into a super glue that just will NOT keep pieces together? If so what is the problem ? Lol.
If you set the crappy superglue overnight with a clamp , it will set almost bulletproof, but brother sometimes you need an instant grip between two or 3 parts. In those non stick episodes with super, I have always reverted back to the old orange testers that we grew up with, that ALWAYS welds those parts together. But what about that crappy superglue ? We’ve come light years with etched metal, you can even read the writing on a 1/35 scale German P.38 pistol, but super glue that will not adhere ?

I see the kit STILL has the horrible area of sinkage on the passenger side front fender, I’ve got an original release of this kit with this issue and thought this may have been addressed with the rerelease 😐

A nice video.Got a question I know that you use rattlecan paints.I was wondering if you could recommend a product that removes the paint from a model. I hear a number of different suggestions and the majority of them say Purple Power i would like your suggestion . thank you.

How do you dry your paint??

I will place items in a food dehydrator at 110 and that helps dry it faster.

Why do you prime white molded parts with flat black rather than a white or light gray when you're going to paint them white? Seems counter-intuitive. If the part had been molded in red, it might make sense. Also, what color did you spray the body with? It looks to be a close match for the factory color "Bittersweet".

Lol 8 billion custom parts and one set of wheels....hard to believe as AMT used to put at least 2 types
Best one is one of the original 69 Cobra kit as I think it has 4 or 5 different tire choices
