The split step gives me problems; is it really necessary? Why not have a ready position with the feet wide apart and on your toes ( doe the upward jump do anything?). Also, do you think the location of the point of contact should be the same for all types of volleys (high, low , waist high and wide)?

      Good questions Chris
The split is tremendously important. When splitting properly the split gets you moving the direction of the ball much quicker than without. If keeps you from getting locked into the ground.
The contact point will very depending on the height. The higher you contact the ball the further out in front it will be and the lower the further back

That ball came at you so slowly there's no need stand that far away from the net. Good tip nevertheless.

Being a serve volleyer, I always position myself that far from the net prior to my opponent hitting the ball and either close on the ball or drop back to knock off the overhead. That foot or so in front of the service line is my holding area without fail. That's a Serve volleyer tip for you! No charge. 😉
