It's rare that volley technique is taught properly and many players end up getting good only blocking or deflecting/using pace instead of really being able to put the ball through the court.     I have same issue you had in the past: only play slice volley and have trouble to put away ball in doubles. I practice the flat volley and was able to put away the volley now. I been follow tennis instruction for years now but you're the 1st one teaching this technique. Thanks coach

    Can you break your videos into smaller chunks? The interesting material that matches the title is a full 13 minutes in (more than half the length of the video). I almost didn't make it to the important stuff. Getting "more pop" is an advanced topic. Using a continental grip, keeping your raquet head above the hand on most volleys, laying the wrist back, etc. are all beginner topics. I also was taught to isolate the shoulder muscles when volleying which makes it harder to end-points when you do get the easy slow volleys. Thanks for the video despite my complaint!

    I've been watching this video repeatedly. Comment on minute 10', wrist, forearm muscle, racket tip, low-to-high:
    The explanation might confuse beginners. Watching the demo at minute 10:24 should help.
    I want to suggest a drill for beginners: stand at net, hit both side volley with a Still shoulder, only use forearm like he said. The volleys will be very weak but you'll see the racket head moving as he said. Then, moving back further from the net, repeat until you cannot volley successfully with just forearm, then this is when you use the shoulder. Note the following:
    - Shoulder + arm move from high to low = for high ball.
    - He led the volleys with his elbow, then snap wrist (using forearm muscle).
    - Everything must flow together = you must practice.
    Good technique, coach. hope this helps further your cause.

    really good and clearly explained. A lot of details that I haven't found too much on yt.
    kind of opened my mind a bit. I kinda knew or observed watching federer volley for example that he has that movement of the tip of racket, and the perfectly clear way you broke it down into 2 parts shoulder isolation and forearm isolation was revealing!

    what you are missing is the racket facing in a continental grip after wrist extension, it is actually facing forward (towards the ball) perhaps 45 degree, so the forearm supernation the key for cutting the ball. Imagine forearm supernation is used for "pop", meaning the wrist will have no role in the play, potentially breaking the wrist.

    Yeah if you're super beginner you usually don't have the ability yet just like this guy says to do what I do so what happens is you just you're open face and you're just you don't have the right grip and you poke the ball back to the opponent but this is how we begin to learn racquetball awareness you know we have to learn in stages I really believe that so yeah you can't just jump the gun right into a pack cash and Mackinaw valley's overnight

    Right you want that rock ahead up above that rest and you want a firm rest and you're using a different method than me you're using wrist lay back once they try to avoid and you use with SNAP maybe the top pros use the wrist snap on they bend it back and snap it to add a little extra power at the pro level to say you're John mcenroe but in the lower levels are you start messing with the wrist like that and you're in big trouble but we try to avoid risk lay back I'm basically to get that pop I do it from uncoil see when you're getting the pop in your volley you're turning the shoulder and uncoiling it number two you are keeping a fixed firm wrist and you keep the racket head up number three instead of isn't just the shoulder turn that uncoils it that gives you pop it's the fact that I'm coming in at the same time but one thing you're leaving out is the footwork the footwork is really what gives me that pop along with what you're doing in the upper body right here is it I've transfer my weight from the back foot to the front foot and this gives me the additional pop as I'm coming in I don't mess with the wrist because even if you're six feet tall you're going to be looking through the net most of the bowlings that top pros Miss are because they're trying to hit down on it when you can't you're trying to get it out and it looks like you can hit down but you can't you end up hitting the top of the net all the time if you volley like you're hitting across the table top you're going to make those lollies it's an illusion to think that you can hit down on your balls that's why they miss so many balls all the time if you get in the right position there you're able just to block it and hit the side piece for the winter but to get that additional pot you really have to get that shoulder turned that's what you're doing and when you uncoil that shoulder turn while you're coming in if you transfer your weight from the back foot to the front foot and step in while you're doing those three things you'll have tremendous pop that distinctive sound that comes off they'll be powerful volleys that are put away so that three things I do to make it pop as the foot weight transfer from back to front foot the uncoiling of the shoulders the shoulder turn which gives me that uncoil I'm side on with my shoulders my body when I hit my body I'm not open and I use a firm wrist I don't break it and I hit straight through I pick a Target and I am for the corners because I'm going to pop that volley right into either alternate corner if I'm coming up I'm usually hitting a half folly I'm going to keep that rack of face closed and and back because I'm going to put a little bit top spin on that half follic coming in okay so then I'm at close that rack of face hit that top spin on that I'll probably coming in and then I'm going to move into position so I can get that first

    Well I'll mess around with it you know it's risk laid back they try to avoid that and you using the tip of the rack I see how you're doing it and not hitting down on it you're going to load high so yeah it gives it extra snap I'm doing it from My method you're doing it from your method I get the pop from the footwork and the uncoil of the shoulder but here you're doing it from the wrist lay back tip the racket and popping it from there so you're up closer to the net so yeah experiment with it it's a little more advanced when you start messing with the wrist snap and stuff so

    Right your Tennessee is just to keep a lock wrist and and you know short and abbreviating all you do is just hit the ball right back to the guy and then you wonder why you get past every single time because you have no pop on your volley and you didn't place your ball into the corners so you just hit right back to him and he just passed you easy you had no pop on your volley

    Yeah the difference between top players and world classes they got pop on their volleys and how do you get that distinctive sound that only great values have that pop and that's what I am going to teach today let's see how some of the other coaches think about how to get pop on their volleys and then we'll go

    Right if you're way back you're probably going to hit deep up the middle because if you're way back there there's no way you're going to hit the side keys or deep into the corner pockets so but you're going to have to close in but what we're looking at here is how to get pop or that distinctive sound on your volley that only the top pros have you're just covering how to you know the half fall is the different orange and so is your I can see your closing in the closer you get to net the more improved your angles are but let's get back to the question of how we get that extra pop sound and distinctive sound that pros have

    Although I think stability of non hitting shoulder needs to be added.. secondly there are two kinds of volleys causing either stability and depth or push off the opposite leg I do disagree that in singles you can get away with drop and wide volleys check .check Mac Edberg to understand the value of deep volleys mostly first volleys

    One certainly can't POP the volleys without using those aforementioned concepts (pronation the forearm on the FH volley, flexion the forearm on BH volley; recoiling via flexion of the wrist from cocked position to neutral).

    twisting forearm = low to high racket tip. This technique made your signature backhand slice. pretty hard. I still have to practice it every chance I get. "fine motor skill" is truly hard, requires lots of practice to get the technique + timing. There are 3 height levels also: low, mid, and high volley. Most casual players still have a hard time watching the ball + hit the sweet spot = can't learn this volley. You have to have some solid basics first before trying to learn this video.

    The footwork gives you that pop because you transfer that weight from the front foot the back foot to the front foot there right when you're going to hit it so the stepping in of those volleys are closing in those valleys you got the good uncoil from the shoulders I'm stepping and I'm closing I'm moving forward while I'm getting those volleys and those trees give me real pop that distinctive sound boom comes off that volley and that's what the top pro stuff to play of course when you start dabbing with wrist lay back and you start messing with the wrist and then you start it adds more variables you know the more if you start breaking that wrist you're going to start raining some problems but you have a different technique to me and if it's working for you you using that wrist lay back and then you use a little bit of wrist snap that's going to work most of the time but I don't I find it you know the lower levels possibly if we change grips Continental grip is just too difficult for novices so that just do a slight grip change that makes a big difference you do have time to change grab plus if you get the shoulder turned more and you step in you can really get that uncoil into your volleys and you'll start getting the pop later on you can start trying to do with this guy is doing I guess start messing with the wrist but then

      Depends how hard the ball is coming. Also depends on if you need more stability or racquet speed.

    Thanks for stepping out of the box with the wag volley instruction. Adding the stable wrist motion makes the volley more dynamic. Have observed this “ drum beat” punch motion on many tennis videos from Japan. I enjoy your unique and sometimes unconventional approach to tennis instruction.       I think the dribbling will help the forearm strength. I get it from just feeding a lot of balls

    Maybe you're not hitting that world class half folly coming in you're getting caught you have a lot of different difficulty with that volley coming in half folly is the secret and then how to get pop on your volleys is the second secret and they will be looking at this guy to see how he hits his half folly and then how he comes on in and then tries to get pop on that first volley
