The key techniques that work for me is the prepare early and keep the grip loose to generate more power and to not be afraid to hit long. Top spin then seems to come more naturally and the length corrects itself through the flight path of the ball.
Swinging loose has always come natural to me. Lately I've been focusing heavily on weight transfer (with proper timing) and contact further outside my body. The power increase is for sure noticeable and will surprise your opponent. Love your tips! Many thanks!!
Thanks Patrick, I am 74 and have recently restarted playing with some friends who are younger and fitter. Much has changed since I played back in the 1960's, and your lessons are really helpful and at my age, it is not really logical to start paying for lessons to improve or re-learn. Thank you for offering this service (pun not intended) at no cost, I really appreciate it !
Thank you Patrick for being so generous to social tennis players regardless of our level. We can always keep learning, tennis is a game we can keep playing into our old age!
Of all of your videos about generating power, this one finally made it click for me! The explanation of a loose grip and the analogy of the tree branches are PERFECT. Thank you yet again, Maestro!
Before responding to your question, let me first say that I've observed you in players' boxes for over a decade. I came to your channel because I was impressed by a recent TikTok in which you diagnosed Kyrios with the "Syndrome of the Talented Player." I've watched almost everything on your channel; the masterclasses and shorts are fantastic! The production quality is world-class, and the tips are products of a lifetime of observing the thoughts and behaviors of players. You asked how these 4 power-boosting techniques improved my game. After learning about Tip #4, I shifted from an extreme semi-western forehand grip to a more moderate one, and, sure enough, I could extend my lever and generate more power. I have NEVER heard that rationale before. Thanks for sharing these unique conceptual connections with the world. I'll be telling all my intermediate to advanced tennis students about you.
How long did it take you to develop new muscle memory? With moderate play I changed my one-handed backhand to two handed backhand in the course of 2 years
Thanks Patrick, as a professional Tennis Trainer in Austria I fully agree with your aproache to generate power. Especially the usage of extrem grips was always disapointing for me. MY aproach is the natural swing / flow plus power from your feets to generate power on a recreational to advanced level. I am teachingg since 1987. Best Regards from Austria, Oliver
There are so many great insights in this video but the one that really helped me is to hit the ball back early in its bounce when coming towards me. Before I would just move east and west (left and right) and adjust my swing to wherever the ball was regardless of high or low. Now I know the need to move north and south in order to hit the ball early in its bounce. Thus while this lesson is teaching about power, it also teaches about proper footwork. A double bonus...!
Some physics: it's not the Lever principle. it's that the moment of inertia of a body(racket) goes with the square of the distance from the pivot (roughly, the shoulder), hence increasing with power 2 the linear momentum transferred to the hit object. Also the racket velocity at the impact point is linearly proportional to the distance from the pivot. In total we have roughly a power 3 with the distance. Lever doesn't matter. But the pursue of physics is appreciated anyway :) Thanks for the nice video a phd fellow in computational physics
Like so many others who have posted expressing their gratitude to you for making your lessons available, I too appreciate viewing such tips provided in a clear and concise manner. Cheers to you...
Unfortunately, I only started playing tennis when I was 37. Your videos help me so much to be able to play modern tennis. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.🙏🙏
I respect these rules every time I play..I started 3 years ago and I play almost every day(sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, I love tennis)..my balls are fast and my serve is near 200km /h..I'm 45 y.o. and I think I should have start much earlier 😞😞😞 Love this sport!!! ❤❤ Thank you so much for your advises, I follow everything you said!!!
👍 From Calgary Thanks for all the lessons Since I play Tennis with my left hand, at the end of the session or sometimes at the beginning I throw a ball with my Right hand which is my normal throwing hand against the wall and it allows for my rotation to have a much better balance and have noticed that improvement.
About to put these into practice! These videos and tips are priceless when done in this way! If they work i'll buy and share a bottle of red wine with you, one day in the future!
It took me a long time to get used to Continental with the serve, but I’m been playing for so long. It’s only natural now and Margaret. I change your four hand backhand quite easily so pretty happy with it before I learned how to pronate when I was serving used to switch to forehand, but now I’m pronating it’s fine. Continental and I use the ball as a clock 567 mainly 6:15 or 5:45 for an ace I have quite a good service although I’ve been injured for six months with a swollen tendon in my foot. I’m looking to it.
Magnet: 7/10 Weight transfer: 5/10 Whip: 4/10 Lever arm: 4/10 I've been working on my weight transfer and it's better than before. The whip is likewise improving but still a long way to go. Need to start thinking about lever arm too. Thanks coach!
Weight shift and loose grip have been responsible for my most recent gains in power. The other has been a change in stringing that added more spin without losing power. This helped by making sure the added power still resulted in balls that didn’t go long. I want to learn the Magnetic move next to get better positioning and power.
I now use a hybrid setup with Gamma SynGut 15L (w/ Wearguard) on the mains @50lbs and Gamma Jet 17 on the crosses @58lbs. My racquet is a 2019 Babolat Pure Aero.
For the whip effect, you 're perfectly right, but the synchronisation of the racket head and the impact with the ball is very difficult,' cause the racket speed is very fast and you have very much chance to be either too early or too late on the ball. That is why only the pro can do it with good accuracy. But for the amateurs on an easy ball we may try the whip effect. Thx for the vid.
It's amazing how how often in tennis coaching the exercises/drills are great, but develop something other than what is claimed, and would be explained in a first year biomechanics/physics university course. If you do enough drills there is a chance all aspects will stil be covered. "The Four elements of power"....well one out of 4 as a definitive is not too bad. Though the arm is not totally "relaxed", it simply has less restriction by the antagonists to the desired movement; it is easier to feel the relaxation of them than the torso, due to the effects of leverage in rotational forces. One way to relax those antagonists is to actively engage the desired muscles. Also the benefit of a longer arm is only one factor along with the ability to provide power to it in the time available; longer limbed players don't always hit faster than shorter players. There is also the need to measure or know where a player's strongest muscle contractions are to know where that power is being better delivered. for example: Don't mention the Kyrgios examples amongst the fastest ever hit FH. There is no benefit from more "bodyweight into the ball", and this is as clearly demonstrated throughout the examples as it is in every pro match. The magnet concept is correct, but because the improved positioning allows better confidence that torso contribution won't have to be decelerated through the arm in what is described as the tree concept. Does a branch whipping in the wind not hurt because the tree trunk does not continue into you when contact is made? Perhaps most recreational players, like the ones commenting that these are great, simply don't like to understand the scientific concepts which could explain all these even more directly; which is lucky because it seems most coaches don't understand how to structure coaching to use drills that employ them for the simplest progression.
You make interesting points but you don't explain them clearly enough nor do you develop an argument. For example, you write: "If you do enough drills there is a chance all aspects will stil be covered. "The Four elements of power"....well one out of 4 as a definitive is not too bad." I have no idea what this sentence means. What is "as a definitive"? Maybe English is not your native language. Also, it would be nice to know, for the sake of clarity, which of the four points of Mouratoglou you think is helpful. And then there is this sentence: "There is no benefit from more "bodyweight into the ball", and this is as clearly demonstrated throughout the examples as it is in every pro match. " After this sentence, you immediately move on to the magnet concept, leaving it unclear why the weight dispatch tip supposedly does not work (as you claim).
Nice! Agassi was a another example of the early phase A. Could you please make an analysis of power and technique of the incredible David Nalbandian? Probably the most powerful backhand ever.
For many years people thought the power of tennis shots depends on muscle strength, so many athletes spent hours in the gym improving their maximums on bench press, squat and pull-up. Now we have finally understood that we do the speed to the ball thanks to our technique, coordination and other specific factors. I'm not saying training in the gym is not useful, but we have to know what our players need to improve their tennis first.
What I have noticed it is much easier to achive extended elbow during forehand with eastern grip (which is my grip). More westerned grip is then see more elbow bend. Personally I am unable to use western grip at all (very uncomfortable) so cannot imagine play it with fully extend arm. Anyway, any drill how to keep my wrist super-relaxed? Sometimes holding racket in 3 fingers to release pressure during training. Thanks
Great video, q: Why do I have the feeling that on powerful returns back from opponent I will drop the racket? Or if not, my wrist will hurt a bit, any idea how to fix it?
Really enjoyed your video, I have increased power just by extending my arm. I feel very lucky to have this high level knowledge shared from a top coach for free. You are a credit to the sport!
Power? Im always hitting the ball out so I have to slow my swing down and thats no fun :/. I need to know how to hit with heavy topspin consistency to keep the ball in!
Do you have an “upward” brush motion on the ball as you are hitting it forward? That upward brush on the ball creates topspin. What grip are you using? I would suggest at the least you use an Eastern forehand grip…and even better a semi-western grip to maximize topspin.
@@laurastone6578 Yes - I use a semi-western grip. I can keep the ball in all day long if I slow my swing down but that's boring. If I swing out like better players do with a lot of racket head speed, more times that not it's flying out. If I try to brush up more, that changes my muscle memory/mechanics and timing is off: Lots of shanked balls.
It all seems to make sense. If you would show slow motion and explain there, I probably would understand it much better. This I catchet up: > Hit the ball when it rises from the ground > Use your body movement to add force into the ball > ??? > Hit the ball with a far distance from you body Correct? 🎾🎾🎾
@Coachh PATRICK i think we need help with a serve coaching tutorial for players under 5 feet like Schwartzman basically speaking of continental grip which one to use and the base to hold the racquet for example like a hammer or bend it like Rafael Nadal does with his racquet face at 80 degrees, think such a video would be useful as i tried to analyze how short and tall people serve like Zverev, Schwartzman and Fogini on the short people section.
The weight dispatch I find one of the hardest thing to implement in my game. Maybe Patrick could have elaborated a bit more on how exactly you get your hips and core involved in your swing. Great tips nonetheless!

I have an issue with leaning back and I end up hitting long, now I know why I do that. Will try to get in good positions
