best explanation so far! I'Ve seen about 50 kick serve videos but only this one tells me exactly where to hit the ball! Everyone talks about "behind you", well is it behind me to the fence or behind me on the left shoulder? Now I know! THanks!
I've studied the kick serve for many years and this video is pretty much perfect. This is exactly how I would teach it to someone just learning it. Many videos forget to mention that it's crucial to let the ball drop at least a couple more inches than on a flat or slice serve. Loved it! Thank you!
Really good breakdown of the kick serve, especially on the toss and the finish. Most videos don't deal with the finish and whether it should end on the right or the left. Great job! Thank you for sharing this.
I’m subscribed to 3 or 4 of the big tennis channels. I would say this is the best Kick serve video because of the way you break down each individual component of the serve. Nice work, look forward to more content!
Excellent video. I used to wonder why I donot get any pace on my kick serve. All the coaching videos just talk about tossing the ball above the head but the trick here is the ball should be in front of your left shoulder to get some bite in the serve. Thanks a lot.
I must have watched over 100 videos related to kick serve. This is the only video where positioning of the ball (especially that it should be infront of the shoulder) was mentioned. Thank You soo much !
great tips/video/sound. 'hold on to the ball longer when tossing' - so simple but no one has mentioned it on other channels. that's my biggest take-away! Another tip worth mentioning perhaps also is to "keep the left arm up as long as you can after tossing so you don't look down too fast and will help with chest facing up". keep up the great work. SUBSCRIBED!!!!!
Very good video in kick serve. I would recommend talking a little about the pronation at the point of contact, racket face transition from up then toward side fence.
Good afternoom! I am from Brazil and do not have a good English. I am trying to improve my server, I am studying and practicing a lot. The tips that I liked more were the reason of bending is primarily to see the ball and the way I have to toss to be on balance. But this mechanics is so dificult to my brain, that wants to turn my body to the court and also strokes the ball more frontal. I will not give up. Iwill remain keeping on trying.
Tennis Beyond just finished watching this and you hit 2 huge items perfectly! 1. Toss-not just the placement but you quick discussion about the toss release. I have personally struggled with placing ball properly (I constantly have a toss to flat or slice location) and the bit about waiting to release toss is no small deal. I’m sill working on it but I appreciate you pointing that out. 2. The finish-I appreciate you pointing out that it’s ok to finish out to side because I have a tendency to do that and it’s important to know that it’s ok. Again, thank you!
Jordan, would you agree that it is your forward pelvic thrust that helps you align the hips with the spine, permitting you to maintain your balance on your tilt-back? Nice video .... it addresses a number of points often overlooked by other coaches.
I read your comment again. I think I understand. Yes I think that the pelvic thrust creates the knee bend allowing what you mentioned to happen. Though I probably wouldn’t mention that to someone learning the serve. I think it makes it more complicated then it needs to be. I do agree
@@JordanCoons Thanks..worked purely on upper body action today and have made good progress with trying to keep back foot on ground. Really feeling the tension on forearm and the whipping thru of the racket resulting in a swooooosh sound. It's basically my baseball pitch motion. Even popped a few aces in dubs this morning with mostly slice flat serves. Short clips... ua-cam.com/video/S-Ddgu9iqqo/v-deo.html
Thanks for the clips. Looking good. I would like to see you work on rhythm, meaning from the starting point to the trophy position, slowing the motion down. Take your time during that period and be very deliberate with your movement. Then at the finish of the service motion, freeze your positioning until your ball bounces on the other side, making sure you have perfect balance, that the tip of the racquet is pointing behind you to the tarp, and your racquet is about at your hip level.
Thanks for the video. I like the tip about the legs creating the lean back position. Does this mean that the platform stance is a better stance for the kick serve because it seems to be easier to do this using a platform. Also how do you control the drop of the serve? I hit my kicker outside of the sidelines a lot and have to aim more towards the corner.
Hey Wally The pinpoint works the same. The best example of the pinpoint- off the top of my head, is the former touring pro Pat Rafter check him out. As for your kick not staying within the lines...without looking at it to know for sure, speed controls spin and spin controls the ball. Meaning, if you are not relaxed and swinging fast enough, the spin isn’t turning the ball fast enough to bring it down. What you may also want to try is simply staring directly at the top of the ball next time you hit that kicker. Often times just looking at a specific part of the ball can make all the difference.
@@JordanCoons Thanks for the response. I have tried your method before of swinging faster. It does bring it down but it also slows the ball down and doesn't seem have much kick. I have seen another You_coach say that you have to pronate earlier to get the ball down. (I haven't figured out what that actually means.) I tried to pronate harder and that does bring the trajectory down. But I'm not consistent at getting it in every time. Maybe some combination of both suggestions and your other one about trying to hit more at the top might work consistently.
Wally Friend I've noticed some pin point stance servers bring their back foot up slightly less in line with the front foot on their second serve. In so doing they align their body for a swing path parallel to the baseline. Feliciano Lopez is a good example to watch.
If you are right handed, then pronating more (or starting to pronate earlier, similar effect) takes the ball more right, more power, and less spin/shape/drop. Arm direction more into the court (instead of along the baseline) takes the ball more left, more power, and less spin. More arc on the toss will take the ball more left and more spin. A toss closer/further to the net results in a lower/higher trajectory. You have to find a blend of all these factors. For example, right-handed from the ad side: If you like the amount of "shape" but the ball crosses the net with excessive height and doesn't get down before going wide right, then try tossing a couple inches closer toward the net. Or simply angle the line between your feet a little more to the left.
Very good vídeo. You have a new subscriber. I realized that I am strugling with my kick because of the toss. Analysing Federer's vídeo it is easy to see that the ball should fall an inch behind the head, otherwise you will not be able to brush the ball correctly, to get the proper kick, and will end up with a slice . The problem now is : How to consistently toss the ball in this position 🙂? May be a good a vídeo with some tips on How to toss the ball consistently would be valuable. Thanks for sharing sir.
I already get good kick on my second serves. However, I don't get a lot of pace, maybe about 60mph. I thought that because I am only 5'8" tall so maybe that has something to do with it, but Diego Schwartzman is about the same height and yet he gets a lot more pace on his kick serves, so does Leylah Fernandez, and she is only 5'6". How would I add more pace to the kick serve?
"Behind me but still in front of me..." Seemingly contradictory and there's lots of variation where people face (many even square at the net, which is certainly a problem for the kick serve). I suspect more people will understand if you reference the court. "More arc, but only slightly further from the net" or something similar.
@@JordanCoons Indeed I am. I found it impossible to hit a slice serve from the AD side. By aiming to the right of the ball I simply find myself aiming to the wrong side of my opponent's court. On the contrary hitting a kick from the AD side usually allows me to target my opponent's backhand (once again if he's not a lefty). Thanks for the feedback
I know I'm late to the party but I think it really pays to demo the shot (kick serve in this case) at the start of your video. I'm new to your channel so I'm left to guess whether your video is going to be right for me. I end up skipping forwards looking for a full demo, preferably with the shot repeated, showing you and the ball after the bounce. It's also worth avoiding the camera man's shadow creeping around in the frame ;)

The particular advice of bending the knees rather than the back will prevent many back injuries.

This is helping me alot as I am rebuilding my serve. Particularly like the finishes. Any tips on preventing body from opening too fast?
I would just say try to exaggerate on how long you stay sideways. You want to try to stay to the side through contact then open up for the kicker
