I love my 16 inch Mac. Despite its bigger size and weight I’ve never had the impression it was less portable. I’ve gone on trips and the computer was really usable. It’s nice to have the comforts of a bigger display and battery on a mobile platform. I think the 16 inch MacBook is a viable option for people. It really is a preference thing

Is it heavy if I put the laptop in my chest while in bed watching Tv shows ? Pls let me know because I want to decide what to get the 14 or the 16.

    • @ESS982
      @ESS982 Рік тому +3

@@yv9386 The 16 inch is heavier by a pretty decent amount. A little more than one pound heavier in fact or .6 kg for metric. If you are female then I'd recommend the 14. You may feel uncomfortable with the extra weight on your stomach (my wife notes this). If you are male then you may not care as much. You might be better off with the 14. You're gonna be closer to the screen anyways and you'd appreciate the lighter weight.

same, I have the 16" and demoed the 14" and I will forever treasure the bigger display and HUNDRED WATT HOUR battery (the highest ammount you can take on a plane) It's honetly still pretty portable in my eyes. Plus, there is nothing else like the 16" and its 120Hz Mini-LED display.

Exactly, I want the biggest screen size and the best battery but at the end of the day its still a laptop and its still portable. Not sure why it needs to be made out as if this was some 17" PC laptop monster

I’m a photographer/videographer and I’ll always go with the larger display. Honestly, I enjoy the fact that the laptops are a little thicker again. I want deeper keys a beefier body that doesn’t feel so fragile. Any laptop is portable enough for me. I don’t need it impossibly thin.

I have the 14". I like it for my personal use. I have a 16" one for work. I'm a software engineer so the extra screen makes sense there since I just use it in one place.

Same! I love my 14” when at home on the couch or when traveling. I hate it for long term work.
I have a 16” for work and love doing long term work on it, but hate traveling with it. Especially when you have an iPad Pro, research books, and swatches in your bag with it on the go.
I wish Apple would release a 16” iPad Pro or touch screen Mac with a slim keyboard / trackpad attachment. I feel this would be the perfect setup for many designers.
Sadly we all know Apple will never give us anything remotely similar. ☹️

I got the 16 inch for the bigger XDR display and better battery. I've travelled all over with it in my laptop backpack that was also filled with clothes and many other things and never felt it was that heavy. Mr last Macbook was a 2012 Macbook Pro 13 inch and I feel the weight is about the same but you get a lot more screen and better typing experience.
I think for the screen and much better battery, the 16 inch is much beret value for just 200 bucks. If you get it on student discount, the discount is slightly better if you get the 16 inch over the 14 inch for some reason. Apple gives a slightly better percentage discount for the 16 inch. As anyone can use the student discount your can basically get the 16 inch for the same price as the retail price of the 14. The 16 inch just seems like better overall value than the 14 inch because you're getting a much better battery, reduced fan noise, better speakers, and larger screen for just 200 bucks extra

That is exactly right, I took the 16" for my older eyes and it was everything I had hoped for. I do not care about portability, I have my iPad Pro for that, or even my iPhone. I am happy with my choice and I never had regrets.

I received my 16" last week. My use-case is about having a portable laptop. Even at home I got no external display or sound setup. I got a set of headphones, that's it. The display & the speaker totally drove my decision to the 16" one.
Leaving the job aside, my personal need would make me go for the upcoming Macbook Air generation.

I had thought it out for weeks, I did want the biggest screen & battery, and I was not concerned with portability. I move it around the house and other family members' homes. The next most common place I'll use it is at a coffee house, which is great on the table for hours. I don't fly much, but when I do, I'll just my iPad/keyboard on the tray for the flight and keep the macBook in the bag.

I have neither. My main computer work is with a Mac Studio and 27 inch screen. Much of my work is on financial spreadsheets so the big screen works well. But now and then I have to take this work elsewhere so I use a MacBook Air. Screen-wise it's not ideal for the spreadsheets, being half the width of my 27 inch, but it serves well driving a projector for presentations and for videoconferencing. A 16 inch screen would be only marginally better.
But a 16 inch MacBook would serve well in home or office situations where it would be put away when not in use. Weight is less important here, and the bigger screen makes work more comfortable.

  • @cpufrost

I had both and kept the 16". I did like the 14" but under high, long loads the 14" thermal throttles like crazy. I use mine as a workstation via thunderbolt. The speakers on the 16" are a bit better too. As far as portability there's not much difference between my 2019 15" MBP and the 16" Of course the latter is far better.
I don't plan on replacing the 16" until something dramatic comes out such as a 16" AMOLED display. Hopefully the notch is gone by then too! Imagine a 2000 nit peak brightness display (iPhone 14 Pro Max) on a 16" MBP! Keyboard and trackpad are flawless, no need to change anything.

I would choose the 16” any day. As someone who works with and around tech constantly, I’ve learned that typically the larger device has better battery and speakers. Also that bigger display would be much better for media consumption.

The reason I chose the 16 was that i only travel into the office 3 days a week (10 min cycle) and the extra weight is negligible. At work it is docked with 2 4K Monitors and i use the 16" screen for even more real estate. The main reason is that when I'm at home I don't have any other monitors and prefer a bit more of a minimal set up, so the extra screen real estate i get with the 16 is ideal. I also don't have a huge office space. I also can take it round the house, in the garden etc, and it has a big enough screen to still be productive.

That’s why I like my M1 13-inch MacBook Pro so much. It’s small and light. Battery last SO long on a charge, I use it most of the time completely disconnected (like my iPad). I don’t mind that it only has two USB-C ports, because I want it free and without cables while using. When I charge, I also connect my Time Machine backup drive, and that uses two ports. Then, it’s free again. Even the 14-inch MacBook Pro would feel big and cumbersome to me. It’s obviously more powerful with M1 Pro/Max, but that difference is not obvious for how I use a Mac.

Coming from Macbook Pro 13" unibody and planning to replace it after 10 years, I will go for the 16. In 10 years the screens progress have been so big that the 16" is close to the 2012 13" regarding the size (because of the thick edge of the unibody) and the weight. For me I won't see a significant difference for portability. But the 16" has also better autonomy, speaker and cooling system. So I guess it depends also from where you come from.

The 16” M1 MacBook Pro Max is my first laptop/MacBook I’ve ever bought/owned.
    I absolutely love it.
Max chip, battery, screen size, display are incredible.
With any laptop whether it’s 13”, 14”, 15”, 16” they all are big & they can’t fit in your pocket anyways.
    Heavy? My iMacs are heavy.
    That’s why there are laptops.
If you want something small and light get an MB air.
    Or an iPad.
As always the bigger models will always weigh more & have more & better options/features.
    😂

I chose the 14 for me as I travel more often and needed the better portability. Both are fully spec'd out with the M1Max and 64GB of RAM and 4TB SSD. We both used 17-inch MBP back in the day when we turned over the home office (aka guest room) to a family member when they moved back home. They were great for surfing on the couch!

I'm on the team that likes a bigger screen, but also a lighter laptop (like an LG Gram). Apple doesn't even have to switch from 16 to 15", there's the Z axis to tackle (no, it doesn't have to be that thick to have IO, just look at an HP spectre that retains USB-A while being much thinner).
I can't stress how funny (or sad) it's that the PB Ti had smaller bezels than all the MBPs prior to the notch.

I have both sizes of M1 Pros. I can easily hold the opened 14 with one hand, but the 16 is sometimes a bit of a struggle to do that with. The 16 fits better when I hold it along my arm though. I do not like the reduced screen real estate, the reduced battery size and the smaller speakers of the 14. I also realized I should have gotten 32 GB of RAM for my 16 since I have run into memory/swap induced lag problems on my 16 with 16 GB that I have not experienced on my 14 with 32 GB and I don't need to run any "pro" apps to use up 24 GB, just 20 or so chrome tabs + Spotify + Slack. I will probably upgrade to a 16 with more RAM once they make a 3nm M2/M3 Pro available.

I’ve owned a few MBP 15s (2x 2011 Antiglares and an early 2013 Retina). I loved the form factor of the 15; no issues whatsoever. But as an avid Traveler/Photographer, I really considered powerful portability from the get go, hence my decision to pull the trigger on an M1 Pro 10-16-16 14in. I spent a couple of days going between the 14 and the 16 at my local Apple Store and the 14 felt right. I didn’t like the oversized Trackpad on the 16. I never considered the 13 at all, due to being the smallest of the bunch. The 14 became the Happy Medium in the World of New MacBooks (akin to what my old 15s were to the 13s and the 17s).

I do graphic design and even I went with the 14" Pro instead of the 16" despite the larger screen because it just didin't 'feel' portable. It feels like a portable desktop setup with how large it is. I recently went on an airplane and was super thankful I had the smaller 14" inch. If I wanted a larger less portable setup I'd have gotten a Mac Studio or iMac. The 14" is the perfect laptop to actually take with me on the go and work on files anywhere.

My guess for the poll is most votes aren’t professionals, but casual people voting for a pro model … almost all professional interfaces are too small on the 14“
With that being the case, you are actually getting more functionality on the 16“

Spend most of the last half of my life as a SysAdmin and involved in a lot of projects so I had my desktop computer and laptop because I had to work away from my desk a lot in server rooms or in project meetings. I had both 15" and 17" laptops PC and Mac running Windows, Linux, and OSX. I really like my 17" laptop because they could be my desktop replacement lots of screen real estate. With background in music 17" laptops gave me lots of screen to do mixing on. Everything else was a 15" and more most things they was big enough or I had a external monitor I would use with the laptop. So larger laptop the better as far as I'm concern.
Now I'm retired and just doing music and have my iMac, but created a new practice area that is on the small size and want a small computer to use for Zoom and online music classes. I wanted to try a Apple Silicon machine so I got the MacBook Air M2 and was pretty nervous about the decision it was of the 13.6" screen. I am shocked at how much I like this little computer and how much I'm using it way more than I expected I would. I still think about the MacBook Pro 14.2" because of the extra ports and a bit of the speed bump but screen size isn't that different. It's only about a half inch different in size.
So at this point I think I will be sticking with the MacBook Air M2 and then they make a MacBook Air 15" look at that it will be noticeable difference in screen size. As a side note I thought coming out with a MacBook Pro 13" and 14" was an odd decision on Apple's part. I can't see a "Pro" level machine with a screen less than 15". I think Apple should make the MacBook Pro's 15" and 17" and increase the MacBook Air 14" Small and light for the typical user and larger screen for the Pro's who basically need a portable desktop for work.

I agree with you 100%, when using MBP as a secondary laptop. The 16inch model is an absolute beast and if it was the ONLY Mac on my end, would prefer over 14inch model. But, the 16inch model is VERY HEAVY. So much so that I would reach for my 12.9inch iPad Pro when needing something on the go. I literally did a straight up sell-and-rebuy tween my 16inch and getting a new 14inch. Yeah, crazy I know. But as you say, its really about portability. But there is one caveat ... I have tried gaming (Eve w/ Steam) and the 14inch model will thermal throttle to the max and fans at full out. Did NOT have that issue with the 16inch model. But I am not a prolific gamer, so still prefer the 14inch over 16inch as a secondary mobile Mac, due to the heft of the 16inch model.

A few things that makes the 16” better, bigger battery, bigger screen which with that stupid notch at least looks better then the 14” and the speakers which you guessed it are bigger and sound better with and more full sound profile.

personally i'd prefer a bigger screen and battery and would opt for the 16 inch over the 14 inch, same with the pro max over the pro. £100 extra for a bigger display and a larger battery is worth it... but £500 for an extra couple inches and an extra hour or 2 just isn't value for money

I dont consider weight as being something detrimental to portability. I wont be working on my laptop while lifting it around.
For me, bigger screen and a battery sufficient for a full day of work are the most important portability factors,
14" is not sufficient for me to work on, it requires an external screen -> very bad portability,.

In the Intel era I would've never considered a 13-inch Pro because of its performance. However, when it came to choosing Macbook for this era, I didn't think twice about wanting the 14-inch over the 16-inch. The 16' doesn't have the appeal of a true laptop. It's too big and heavy. I have an external monitor at home if I need a big screen. If I need to go out the 14-inch is a much better form factor and there are no performance compromises. It was the obvious choice for me.

If anything, I would use a 16" if it was between a 14 and 16. I daily my Mid 2012 Unibody MacBook Pro 15" with the upgraded screen, 16GB ram, 512GB Original Apple SSD, and the 2.3Ghz i7 (I do have a spare 2.6Ghz board I plan to swap in.) I never have had a problem with portability, and I'm sure an extra inch wouldn't make it much more difficult

the worst part of ultra thin macbook pro is the compromising with the I/O, if they wanna play this game again the should be start with macbook Air... just because the whole public is familiar with the dongle life. much more than pro users.

I want an MBP so bad but I already travel with two laptops (Personal/PC games, work laptop). I would replace my work laptop with one but I have to run proprietary windows-only software that I'm not certain would run very well on x86 emulation within arm windows on parallels. I want one so bad I might just start leaving the work laptop on all the time with a VPN so I can use the software remotely from anywhere lol.

I don't get it. I took my M1 16" to the mountain , to the sea beach, to the hotels to hotels throughout this entire year of 2022 and never felt short about having slightly bigger then what? I have been using 15.6 inch Acer since 2010 so this was not going to had any impact to anything. I took it on my northFace trekking backpack and all good an all weather. I know you are a tech guy but this 14inch to 16inch is just like what you are used to, has nothing to do with the tech thing. If I am used to have a bigger kitchen, I will always be looking for a bigger kitchen. If I am using a 16incher I will aways be comfortable using the same size.

A fifteen inch Air would be the dream to me. Or even a 14.8 inch screen , something close. Even without active cooling, the extra size of the chassis should allow for far better passive cooling. Or maybe just add a single fan to it. If they made an air at 15 or close to fifteen inches, ideally they can get the width of the computer to about 13.5 inches verse the 14ish inch width of the current 16 pro and slimmer than the 13.75" width of the 2016 15" pro. But, what if they did make this, and then it cost the same as the 14" pro...

I saw Steve Jobs email from like 2010 where he was discussing 15" MacBook Air. It was released as part of some court issues between Apple and Samsung. I would buy it day one. I need large screen, see a lot of things at once. I dont need ProMotion or super fast processor for video editing. And I want a laptop, that cant get noisy (no fan)

I got 14" 32 RAM 1TB SSD fast-changing on the first day of selling. I bought it for around 2727 dollars. that is because of our Government's high inflation rates :( I am using it as a Full-Stack web developer. Running about 120 chrome tabs, VS Code open, and multiple DB s and node JS services. I was watching a TV series at the same time. Samsung 32" 4k HDR Smart Monitor is connected. My battery lasts around 12 Hours.

A 15-inch Air would be ludicrously funny. The Air was supposed to be ultra-thin, weighs nothing, and be used for simple tasks such as reading emails, writing documents on the go, and simple web browsing. Having a larger air would defeat that purpose. The air needs to be thinner, a lot thinner, maybe the height of a cardboard flap found on a cardboard double-sided wall. The power should not be that of an iMac Pro but weaker. Also if Apple made the 15-inch panel on the Air the resolution would most probably suck and it will end up like the new iPad.
With that out of the way, I do think the 16-inch mac pro should be a bit more slimmer than the current generation and have a super retina Pro screen with micro LED tech(just invented that part). Also, the device should have optional swappable storage for people who need to store large files. The keyboard should also change to full-sized as there is more space on the bottom deck. The 16-inch Mac Pro should be that... a Pro. This means it needs to be a Jack of all trades while also being sturdy and having features that justify its size. Right now it is more like an inflated 14-inch model.
