The ModBook is a rare Mac tablet conversion that won best in show at Macworld several years running! While the company eventually went bust, I managed to find this pristine time capsule from 2008 that gives us a glimpse into the only successful commercial Mac mod to date! Today we'll walk through the features of the only touch screen Mac, talk about why it failed in the end, and how this design was such a stroke of genius!

I just wish they would add touch functionality to sidecar, not for your pencil, but for your finger, and then I can have a touch screen mac any time I want.
Yes, and make it within the 12-inch MacBook form-factor, at two pounds, perfect! iPad Pro with Magic keyboard is too heavy for running macOS.
Apple could simply allow macOS running on iPad Pro...
I have watched several of your videos, Luke, and have found them helpful. But this one truly blew my mind.
I had no idea this existed. You earned a sub for life! 🥳
Luke, when you do these rare find videos you never tell us two important things: How and where you found it, and how much it costs. We Need the Deets!
As far as needing one, other than a graphic artists it's hard to imagine how this is better than a keyboard and mouse. I can type faster than I can write and my typing is legible.
I've had three of these ModBooks, and the best upgrade that you can do, by far, is upgrading them to a MacBook5,2 (Early/Mid-2009) logic board and bottom case. On the one I got that was in absolutely mint condition, I went a step further, and soldered on a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo T9900 CPU pulled from a Mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro (as well as upgrading the RAM to 8GB and of course installing an SSD). It definitely runs way hotter than it did stock, but it is a really nice upgrade. It even runs Monterey pretty decently using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
i would like to see windows 11 installed on here. been trying to find one my self but cant find one
Isn't the pen driver only 32bit tho?
@@AsianFlex I believe so, but you don’t really need it. Also most of the ModBook Pro software works with the original ModBook, and it is all 64-bit.
@@zacharyschwanke7160 it’s called Microsoft Surface, unless you dual boot it with MacOS!

When I worked at Best Buy about five years ago, someone brought one of these into the store to recycle. I thought it was a prototype MacBook that somehow got into the wild - I had never seen a touchscreen MacBook like it before! I wanted to try to get it working, but we couldn't find a charger to get it charged and it was in kind of rough condition. So cool to get a good look at at a fully functional model!
you really should've took it (if you were allowed) because they are really rare now
Insane that someone would want to recycle it... Even if I put into account that there wasn't nostalgia for this yet
What did you do to it?
@@windowsfan95 I couldn’t take it home to try it out sadly… once it’s handed over by the customer, it becomes Best Buy property, so the manager couldn’t let me have it :/
Sometimes we don’t necessarily need to launch a brand new product, as long as we remake them, may get good results.
Absolutely this is why I love the surface line of Microsoft
The "hover mode" thing is like standard to most pen input devices. Like I have been surprised how many people in the tech world didn't know of this. Almost every pen device I've used has had it, including like $400 laptop a family member has.
Ikr
Yeah I’ve seen so many people amazed by that when that’s genuinely how wacom style input works, and has worked for decades.
I had the hover “feature” on an old Huion drawing tablet. Kind of annoying honestly.
@@Expressionistix what's wrong with it? You can see where you are aiming before you draw
@@Expressionistix huh?
Hover has always been a thing with Wacom tablets and displays (and their competitors). In order to emulate a mouse you had to be able to move the on-screen mouse cursor around somehow, and touching the screen with the stylus does the same thing as clicking the mouse button. "Drawing" with the stylus is the same as "dragging" with the mouse, from the point of view of the hardware.
When Apple added the Pencil to the iPad, since there was no on-screen "mouse" cursor, hence no need for hover. (Although you could argue that it would be nice for rollover and similar effects. Some web pages were sort of broken when using with iPhones and iPads for this reason.) When they added mouse and trackpad support, which also added an on-screen cursor and hover effects, adding Pencil hover was probably just a matter of time.
I remember these, I had a friend who was very well off and he bought one for his girlfriend at the time. I think they had to buy the Macbook and send it to them to be modified. But it seemed like revolutionary at the time since touchscreen laptops were not really mainstream at the time. I do remember asking what it would cost and it was quite high and not something I was willing to pay for at the time. Today I use a Asus VT229H 1080p 22 inch touchscreen monitor in my recording studio with Logic Pro and it works like a dream with MacOS and even better on Apple Silicon. I was so excited I made a video about it. Apple should make Macs with touchscreens since it could be an extra added cost to the machine when you buy it like RAM and SSD upgrades. Because we all know Apple loves to add exorbitant prices for add-ons.
Whatever add-on price would still pale in comparison to loss iPad sales… aka cannibalizing iPad sales/revenue.
@@gr8dvd Maybe for power users but not for grandmothers and older people who just troll social media and learn the iPad's OS a lot quicker than they would get on with MacOS. But I really think stage manager is a precursor to a touchscreen Mac. Because Stage Manager is great on my iPad Pro but it's worthless on the Mac unless I use my Asus touchscreen since it needs touch to be useful. But we can only hope they make a touchscreen Macbook. Cheers!
These were so cool and futuristic at the time that I believe they had a few of these as props in the early seasons of Eureka as Global Dynamic tech. I remember drooling over these but it wasn't in my college student price range.
Awesome video. Maybe you should attempt to build a modern Apple Silicon ModBook for one of your future videos?
Maybe one day!
I own 2 of these ModBooks and they are definitely fun to tinker with.
Nice one, the touch screen Mac!
Someone needs to revive this with Apple Silicon. You could conceivably put an M1/M2 fanless chip into a thin and light enclosure and put a 120Hz High-Resolution display with stylus support, and a Smart Connector-like keyboard attachment, and it could be the perfect macOS tablet, and finally get me back into proper tablets. After all, I decided to replace my iPhone 13 Pro Max and M1 iPad Pro with the Z Fold4 as I felt iPadOS was underdelivering.
Pfftt, I have a perfect hackintosh of the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 16 running, Catalina and Big Sur. The hardware is practically identical to the Macbook pro 13 from 2013. 4k display, and all Wacom feature work perfectly. If you want to get one done, I can provide you with my EFI and so e tips for the bios
This is very interesting. I never saw one of these and to be honest it's pretty cool. Always nice to learn something about old Apple stuff
it looked like they used this device in tv series Stargate Atlantis all the time to troubleshoot their tech problems on the show :)
saw one of those back in school about 14 years ago, very cool idea.
As a collector and nerd of old tech I would love to have some of these old ModBooks from 2009 to complete my 2009 Mac collection!
Hot damn! That’s one high quality mod! Like really high quality!
I remember eyeing these when they came out! After all this time I still would rather have a touch screen mac than an iPad.
Awesome 🤩 😎 👏🏾 video
To get touch screen for work flow I use a iPad and mirror the screen from the Mac book been doing it from 2013
Always wanted a modbook for my collection.
When the vintage Mac tablet thing has hover cursor before the iPad Pro 😂
Almost like the iPad Pro should just have MacOS as an option...
I remember seeing these and wanting to buy one so bad 😩 I would actually love to see someone go the opposite direction, and not make a Mac into a touch screen but hybridize the two and have both OS’ be usable and accessible within this new Third design tablet device. Literally take the body of a Mac and remove the screen, use the iPad in its place and have all combined features and parts work in symmetry. Everyone is getting tired of just *NEW* We want great products that test the boundaries and get us thinking and creating/doing.
I love it when he goes “Modbook”😂😂😂
Dude, love this, have no idea how I missed it having refurbished every single Mac desktop and laptop since 1998
refurbished every single Mac desktop and laptop since 1998... Did you REALLY?
When Luke has these videos about rare finds, he always leaves out two important things: How and where he found it, and how much it costs.
Why the secrecy Luke? Give us the deets!
Apple: In 2022, we give you the hover feature (and only works on the latest iPad with M2).
Luke: 'We have apple pencil hover mode' on a 2007 macbook.
Yeah yeah. But also :
Apple in 2007, a year before: We give you an iPhone in your pocket, without any lag.
Years ahead of its time. Cool 😎
great thanks my fr
I am very grateful for the hack thank you so much bro it is a very good game easy to use
I always wanted one of these
sickkk
I remember when this came out! Wanted one so bad.
FlexiSpot, the place where I bought my desk last month!
The M2 iPad running MacOS is the mod book.
This vid has been done slready
iPad exists to appeal to the masses. Putting macOS on one would cause it to lose a lot of that appeal. Despite having similar looks, macOS is quite a bit of a different beast to PadOS. I have used laptops with touch functionality. It’s awkward in practice. Now if Apple were to do something like what Microsoft did with their Surface tablets, I’d pay attention. I loved how if you folded that Smart Keyboard back, it would flip from full windows into tablet mode.
Loved the video wonder if apple see it
The one thing Apple has not accomplished yet, is making an actual MacBook tablet.
My science teacher had this haha and I’ve always wondered what this was
They can easily do this now. m1, m2 chips in ipads can easily run macos, it's just that they refuse to.
I remember this product 🙂
Wow u kicked my ass for the first time! As an apple user I don’t recall about this laptop, i do for the first IMac with touch screen though! (Maybe u can find one) Apple always been ahead of its time Wosniak is Apple! The man behind the ideas and computing creation. Well done for getting this rare item that still works. The problem with Apple was Steve jobs who stopped many things to include windows software n else. Personally the ipad does the thing n is slighter n will never replace a computer to me.
Aren't the two buttons on the stylus a fwd/back or left click/right click button?
I had that thought and almost got an iPad with a Brydge Keyboard+trackpad case.
Like you and other UA-camrs keep saying just make it possible to choose to run MacOS on an iPad even if it the pro version. I have found that there are limitations to what I can do on my iPad and I think that is the wall.
What upsets me is when he said 14 years ago my mind said "oh 2004"
Great vid! It irks me that it's not that Apple can't figure it out, it's that they won't, because it's not about the best product, it's about making the most money.
It's about the best experience
I have one of this! but the pen wont really register well, maybe is the drivers problem? if you can share the disk drivers! i can maybe try to fix it!
I remember apple said during the presentation that they will never make a touchscreen MacBook because keeping your hand in the air for a long time taping on the laptop's screen is just uncomfortable. Also, it will require apple to massively overhaul macos to make it useable with touch input since otherwise,we will get something like windows 7 or 8 which are completely unusable on tablets. And additionally, apple tries to always make their products so they don't overlap. Touchscreen MacBook will just create a direct competitor for ipads which apple will want to do
iPad:Imma end this man’s whole career
There are some interesting videos out there about the company and person behind it. In the end they never brought another ModBook to market, even after crowdfunding $1.8 million. A lot of people apparently lost money pre-ordering one. That being said, I'd definitely consider purchasing a ModBook type device if Apple ever came out with one.
I would just want an option to have MacOs on the IPad period, even a restricted form of it.
Duet and your finger, just that 😉
Duet is laggy!
@@Corelila To me is not laggy, maybe to work with video apps in real time or drew, but is something you can adjust in the settings or use sidecar in this case with the pencil. But for the rest of normal uses works great! is like external monitor tactile for your mac, I use the Mac Mini and the iPad Mini, no keyboard or mouse, just the fingers.
@@djinnibiza well, honestly for a lot of us the whole point is to draw and use apps in real time. But I’m glad it works for you!
@@Corelila yes I’m dj 🎧 I work with Rekordbox and browser’s. You are right because the most of the people work with Mac is with video editing or graphic design. In that case need to use Sidecar and Apple Pencil or Astropad with the iPad. 🤗
In some of those embedded vids, that "remote" mysteriously looks JUST LIKE the older TV touchscreen remote!!!!
It is no wood, it is grass (the table) 😜
11:07 Apple Fanboy uses a Wacom tablet for the first time
Wanted one of these so bad in college.
Are you sure Apple hasn’t done a MacBook tablet yet? I am sure there’s a prototype in Cupertino. They’re just being Apple
Having a touch screen Mac would be awesome, but it doesn't seem like we're gonna see that anytime soon.
Someone should just figure out running macOS on iPad and you end up with the modern version of this 🤷🏼♀️
Hey you didn’t say “apple silicon” in this video! Remarkable
I have one of those. Unfortunately it's missing the plastic cover for the GPS/wifi antenna. Sure wish I could find one somewhere.
Hopefully, they will merge the macOS experience with the one of iPadOS. I liked the idea of "Continuum" for Windows Phones. It is just that Apple is in a such better position with its of Universal Platform (Catalyst). And I hope and think that Stage Manager will play a huge role.
In all honesty I can totally get why Apple doesn't make a touchscreen mac - touchscreens are only comfortable to use in a tablet/phone way, not when the screen is vertical like on a laptop or desktop. I get the urge to stick one in a laptop but I doubt it'd work as well as people may think...
If only the iPad is capable of running desktop apps, then it would've been the perfect productivity device. It keeps getting more powerful so it should be able to handle desktop apps, right? But iPad is limited only to apps that works on the tablet. I like this idea of a touch screen Macbook Pro with a stylus. I do 3D modeling and animation, I use the drawing apps for texturing. I just end up using a Windows laptop connected to a monitor and drawing tablet, I do most of my work on the computer compared to a tablet.
The iPad killed it along with any hope of any possible future.
What is so surprising about "Hover" and it's not "Apple Pencil hover". Wacom EMR tech (which I believe the Modbook uses) had hover for literally decades, and since Wacom is what professionals use, hover was a highly requested feature for the Apple Pencil since its introduction.
They did bring it back in a way it’s called an iPad now lol 😂
14"/16" iPad Pro running iPadOS docks to 14"/16" MacBookPro chassis. Each has its own SOC, memory, storage; when docked, it runs full macOS and harnesses BOTH devices combined resources; when undocked, it has onboard iPadOS / storage which integrates seamlessly when docked into macOS. 2023, c'mon Apple, do it for Steve!
no wayyyyyyy
I still. have my modbook!
here have some spare stylus tips and the box but oh well we forgot the stylus.
An iPad that we always wanted...
I need the back of my Apple Pencil to be an eraser
Luke you should try and make a Modbook yourself using a modern Macbook pro
the modbook pen is basically a surface pen
could you get newer versions of mac os on it?
I think there is room for ipads and touch screen macs to coexist. There really only needs to be 2 families of ipads, pro and non pro. Make the pros have touch screen macos (either by default or a hidden toggle mode) while the others stay the same.
Ppl like ipad os as is for the simplicity. Its really only higher end consumers/pros that want it to do more. So apple should just allow a hidden mode just in pro iPads to give us this experience but in a sleek and modern design chassis that iPads already nailed.
They could even change the naming to ultra and so only the ultra ipads can do this but the normal iPads are just ipad, mini, and rename the air to pro since they are practically the same except for refresh rate. This way ppl who want the best experience from ipad os still get the “pro” device but ppl who really want functionality and performance grab the ultra model
A 12 Minute video doesn't need to explain this. It's simply because... iPad's. Nobody was really interested in touch screen technology in 2006 when this came out and by the time it was popular in 2008 with the iPhone Apple was already working on the iPad. It just wasn't "necessary" in their lineup.
I have two radical ideas for how to achieve this but both require some r&d and breaking. Things if enough people wanted it I would go ahead and make one of the two
Idea one is hack the top case for the current keyboard of the m-series Mack book air. And the lid can be thrown back into a cnc cutter because we need to persevere the Touch ID And throw in a daughter bard a wacom digitizer and a macro key to activate an OSC app
Idea numero dos is Take the MacBook Air Gut the screen and keyboard and shove the. iPad pro internals into the lid and put the iPad on sidecar mode permanently only thing is side car doesn’t pass through touch so that’s where the break things comes in at
ive been waiting for this video for years now. sad to see the company has turned into a scam
Lmfao no?
Is it a re-upload? Because I’ve already seen it
10:27. I would like all the ports that the modbook has on the m2 MacBook Air. But also macOS Big Sur so it respects my privacy.
You could probably solve the double click thing by changing the double click speed in your preferences.
Yeah well, we have the m2 ipad now.
this is like the mac verrsion of motion computing tablet pc’s from 2005
Better than the "Touch screen Mac" would be for Apple to make iPad Pro run either macOS/UNIX with touch, or iPadOS/UNIX. Be able to choose persistent mode on cold boot/power on with the option to change, and HUP processes to switch between modes. KISS
Then they could lock down macOS hardware even further, and not allow you to downgrade macOS as the version of iOS cannot be downgraded... That's what they do next.
I was able to successfully restore a 2020 MacBook Air to macOS 11.2.3 to run iOS applications (which one developer has already used as basis for a subscription model on desktop) when the iOS version gave a better experience with more features.
Being able to virtualize macOS or iOS and flip between the containers at will, and compress, then swap RAM contents to disk, then we can use apps between the two systems at the same time without much issue. This also mirrors my predictions that macOS and iOS accessibility APIs are merging together.
What prevents another company from trying.
I reckon Apple providing the ability to run the desktop OS - even dualboot with iOS - would solve this issue instantly. Okay the iPad has very limited connectivity, but haven’t we gotten used to two USB C ports on Macbooks in the past? 😊
Where can I buy one?
Touch screen Mac? I’m tired to wipe out accidental fingerprints on gloss surface of todays Mac -so I will be constantly mad about fingerprinted screen (((grrr
I'd like to see a modern version using M1 air, M1 air is cheap and plentiful. Easy to remove parts too vs M2 air. USB-C, audio board and touch ID are all separate and don't need the keyboard or trackpad connected. Battery isn't glued in either. You could do a great complete custom case for one.
I don't think you want, the touchscreen will be thicker than the mac
i want one of these lol
Touch screen macbook
I have one but the touch screen is dead….no way to replace it. Anyone know how to fix it?
To be precise, the table is not made of 'solid wood', it is made of grass . 😀
Unfortunately, Modbook was a scam of a company. Their Kickstarter has been unfulfilled for YEARS with no refunds.
where can i but this
