There are so many things that would have remained unexplored if not for Brian and Kevin's contributions. My favourites are the Guild origin stories as they are so integral to the Duneiverse. Also the ongoing story with Duncan et al is great as I've been enjoying this series for over 30 years now and it would have been a lot shorter than that if it hadn't been for son Brian. Having said that, favourite book, God Emperor.
@@ununitedstates7550 The Prelude books helped ease me into Dune Universe because before reading them I knew absolutely nothing about Dune. Brian Herbert wrote the Preludes to get new fans (like me) on board with the franchise.
The origins of Baron Harkonnen’s obesity was retconned in this. Frank Herbert established that obesity is a trait of the Harkonnen family. The Baron even comments that Rabban is starting to show signs of it.
Agree. I actually think i like Brian and Kevin more. With Frank, it was too much and too deep. B and K simplified the stories. It's easier to read Frank later and appreciate him more.
Simply put, Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson’s Dune is fast food while Frank’s dune is gourmet. The latter is better but I do like to indulge in the former.
3:58 although I had this spoiled by you, (I don’t mind, you’re doing fantastic!) I really hope everyone else agrees to this point you made. It would’ve made for better character development in terms of self-indulgence of his own accord after reaping the benefits of Arrakis. Thank you for bringing up this odd plot point!
I read the original Dune trilogy during lockdown and loved them all. Just read "Paul of Dune" out of pure curiosity. It's alright. It's a little bloated and got boring in a couple parts. I can see why hardcore fans would be irritated with Brian and Kevin's writing style. The book definitely did NOT need to exist, but it's still really cool to see what my favorite characters were up to. So far, I equate these expanded books to comfort food. I appreciate this review! Just ordered my hardcopy on eBay :)
I've read all the Frank Herbert Dune books and now a few of the ANderson/Herbert books. They have 4 trilogies that are set before the Dune series as well as a couple Dune sequel books I'm reading now. I think their good books overall. I think it was easier for them because they didn't have to make up everything, the Dune universe was already there for them to expand.
I think they're other books are pretty good too. I love their Bulterian Jihad books even though they do get flak for not being what the original series implied what the Jihad was like.
@@PantherJaguar I'm not really picky myself, am sure I will enjoy them as well one of these days! I also haven't read Chapterhouse which am keeping for later!
I’ve only read the first chapter and I can’t deny I wasn’t impressed with anything. My assumption is that it’s an introduction paragraph, which is fine. The writing seemed (sorry to say this) a bit basic. Other than that, I’ve always wanted to learn about the time before Dune. Of Caladan, of Geidi Prime, of the Great Houses. Your review gave me confidence to persist in continuing my read, so thank you, and I wish more people would watch this video!
I thought that House Atreides was a good read. No, it does not contain the greatness that "Dune" merits, but it is an excellent novel and I enjoyed it.
The writing style is so different to Frank's that they can in no way be compared to the six original books. These pre-Dune books have become YA pulp fiction with very little depth. Hence why there is so much criticism which I think is warranted. Rather than write Dune books the way they should have been written, they appealed to the lowest common denominator and tried for mass appeal and in the process lowered quality far too much.
I think the non frank books need to read differently. If brian just tried to write like his father, it would simply be a pale immitation. Also, I don't think frank's style of writing is all that great IMO

House Atredies was my introduction into the Dune universe. I didn’t start with Dune as most Dune fans had. These books made me love Dune more.
Out of curiosity why did you start here and not with the original Dune.

I really like Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson's book. They aren't as good as Frank but they don't deserve the hate they get from a lot of Dune fans.

In the midst of reading it now, and it is a really good book. It's hard to put down.
This is the book that got me into Dune.

I like the character building this book and look forward to the next book in the Caladan series.
Two minor pronunciation notes.
( according to the audible narration that I listened to)
1 Hark-an-en
2 mo-HiY-em
3 Gai-di prime

I started with this one, really liked it. Really liked Duncan, but I assume i'd hate him If I read the 6 books first :P
I thought these 3 house books were pretty good, I haven’t read the others offerings though. I agree to everything you said!
Thanks for watching!

@@MrSkills123 Chapterhouse is pretty good! It's so sad Frank didn't live long enough to finish the series after that one.
Gonna do any reviews for book 5 and 6? I was really excited for them, and don't care for filler at all
Yeah, Going to try and do every Dune book. Thanks for watching!

I really don't get the hate for the books, their not Frank's writing and books but their still very compelling and enjoyable.
Agree
The characters felt off to me. I stopped after finishing the 3rd House book.
Kevin J Anderson used to write Star Wars books right?
Yeah, he wrote this one.

This trilogy is definitely not as offensive as the butlerian jihad novels. The house trilogy was at least entertaining
