8.5 YEARS!!! How old is your starter battery?
Both mine were north of 9 years when I replaced them in my L405, so the BMS had taken good care of them.
@@rhkavli wow, that’s good. Some modern technology is definitely worth having in the cars. 👌
My battery gave up this week (no warnings, it just failed) so have bought a replacement, not installed yet. Mine is also AGM and the vehicle is a 2014 year model, so it has lasted 10 years.
10 Years is amazing, a testament to the AGM technology. You are located in Australia right, so way on the other side of the temp-spectrum as well. What type/model battery did you have? 2014 has the smart alternator I belive.
@@LandRoverDrive I got a Centuary battery, I think they are an Australian brand. I drive a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the Hemi V8, awesome vehicle, I was looking for a Land Rover Discovery 4 with the supercharged V8 but nothing reasonable in my price range, so I bought the Jeep.
@@Peter-xtreme Cool, seen the brand in videos from Australia so your probably on to something.
Don't think you can go wrong with a Jeep, and with a Hemi V8, that's more than true. 😊
I didn't know the D4 came with a supercharged V8 version, don't think they were ever delivered here in Norway at least.
Supercharged V8 in a disco, that is now my goal...
You need to buy the spring-loaded hood light that lights up the engine bay. Excellent, the bar doesn't damage the hood, and the magnetic light makes working on your vehicle easier
Yeah, that would be really nice and It's on the list of light mods that I want to do. 👍 I think I will do a lot more camping lights upgrades come fall. Really fun doing these nice little mod jobs. 😊
Thanks for doing all the working out with the lights as I need to do similar in my Disco , also I'm glad I'm not the only one who had trouble with those switches, I blew a couple of fuses before I got it figured out. One other thing is that I also have an extra fuse box in the rear but I fitted mine behind the panel and cut an access hole and made a cover for it. It keeps the fuses etc out of the cabin and still allows you to add electrics with out having to take the panel out. Oh, and I'd send that battery back under warranty if I were you. Eight and a half years doesn't sound all that long to me!
Happy to share what I have done and learned. I still don't understand why one would need such a switch, but maybe it will come to me one day. I will see where it all will end up in the end, but easy access is the most important, and a hatch like yours is a smart solution. 👍 Fuses is there to saves us when we do stupid stuff, why I fuse everything and fuse it a bit lower than the expected maximum just to be on the safe side. 😊
I like your solution for the light as I am looking to do the same sort of thing although I have a sort of work lamp LED strip which is very bright so thanks for all the brain work! I'd send that battery back under warranty, 8 and a half years seems a bit short to me!
Thanks! And to be honest, the type of led I ended up was a bit of luck as I was running out of time and had to get some new ones as the first solution failed, as you can see in part 1 if you haven't. 😉 Running wires is the fun part and was happy with how it all turned out in the end. And about sending the battery back, hard to get the sarcasm while reading text, but 8.5 years is good right? 😅
Wow that battery served you well. Nice to have lights on the door for camping and cooking. Looking forward to seeing the trip footage 😁👍
Hi Simon, and yeah, I think I won the battery lottery back in 2014. 👍 The camping lights turned out great and must be one of my favourite upgrades thus far. And the trip was great and can't wait to show it off. Will be some weeks before it is done. 😅
Good work Simon. I note others are impressed too. Now you have the job skills for that installation, fit a light strip under the leading edge (front) of the bonnet (hood). Just remember to turn it off. Lol. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Hehe, will have to add a closing switch like there is on the doors. I would never remember... 😊 But leading edge is noted and should be a fun job. First the bonnet struts I keep forgetting about.
Looking forward to the overland trip 👍🏕
Sweet, will be edited sometime next week. 👍😊
Great job Simon. Enjoy your trip 🚙
Thank you Andrew!! 👍😊
Great video Simon! I am planning to set up a similar installation with 2 batteries on my D3. Can you explain why did you decide for 2 AGM batteries and not AGM + LiFePO4? Thanks!
Edit: I just noticed on the other video (part 1) that you are actually using a 3-battery setup:
- primary (start) battery - AGM
- auxiliary battery - AGM
- leisure - lithium
So my question is why 3 batteries? Would 2 batteries not be enough? If you are using leisure battery on camping, what is the point of auxiliary battery then?
Hey and sorry for the late reply, I saw your initial comment, and now I saw your edit.
The 3 battery setup is what I belive to be the optimal setup for remote camping or longer trips. 2 batteries would be enough, but the second AGM battery is a nice backup if your main should fail. Also the aux-battery would help with the load of extra lights and eventually for when I get a winch installed.
I'm maybe to far on the "better to be sure than sorry" side of things, so the aux would act as a backup and a booster if needed when it gets really cold. Below -20ºC
Does it make sense? :)
Simon
@@LandRoverDrivethank you Simon. It totally makes sense! Another quick question - do you use a separator between primary and aux battery? I've seen some videos saying that in 3-battery setup, the separator is not needed. Can't wait to see Your video on the setup 😀
@@artur_ziolkowski I will use a "smart" relay, that will charge the aux battery when the main is full, but it also has a switch, which you wire up inside your car, so you can link them together when you need to.
Say when your main is flat, you are going to winch, or the "smart" relay won't start charging your aux-battery for some reason, like to low voltage.
After reading a lot about it I figured it would be the simplest and best option when using the same type of battery. No need for the DCDC charge yet.
I will get a DCDC charge at the end of my setup, but I think it will be one of the last components I will put into my system.
Solar will come before DCDC, already have it all in the garage, just need to fit and test it out when I get the time. 😅
Are you building up a 12V system your self?
@@LandRoverDrive Yes, I plan to build my own 12v system as well. I also drive a Discovery 3 😁 However I am still on the stage of figuring it all out, from the battery types, all the components and the way I want my system to work. So I appreciate every bit of advice. Thank you!
I was thinking about the voltage separator that would cut off the main battery whenever I'm not driving (and charging), so every time I'm on a short stop (keys in), the power is taken from the aux battery. And then when I'm camping (keys out), I'm using the leisure (LiFePO) battery.
I understand your leisure battery is not charged while driving or on camping at all at the moment? How big are your batteries? And how long do they last for?
Cool, I will share what I know. And I’m still in the middle of my build.
Leisure is 100Ah and I charge it at home, it will last for 3-5 days depending on the usages. Mainly I run my cooler box, not compressor drive so less effective, and I charge my batteries.
While driving I plug the cooler box into the car and during the night I often just leave the cooler outside because it’s often cold enough outside here in the north.
I think I need to do a proper test to see how long I can run the cooler with the battery.
But for leisure, with thoughtful use, as described above, 5 days on one charge.
We drive a lot on our trips so the cooler box runs on the car most of the time.
We’re are you located? I guess in a warmer climate the cooler/fridge would need more power so then I would say 3 days.
Those are single pole switches, the second live terminal is for an led to show it’s on or the position
Whaaaat, I’m I way off, not sure I’m following here Rob. 😅 On this switch, it’s one in and two out. Almost like a super simple left-right indicator switch. And I’m having trouble seeing the point of the switch configuration, when is that useful. 😊😊 Maybe just me. 😂
@@LandRoverDrive if you connect another positive, piggyback of the main positive, it should light up
I can't see an led on the switch, so I doubt it's for that. Simon it is almost like you say, an indicator switch. Off, or the left on or the right on. You won't be able to use it for 1 light or 2 lights, unless you had 3 lights 😂
@@JohnMac-assynt Hehe, I had to draw it out to see if I’m was way off. 😂😂
