Hi Simon, I have literally just done the very same job on my D3 this weekend. I also have a split charge system and a leisure battery under the bonnet. It's only a 'me' thing but whenever I see an exposed battery terminal, especially a live one, I always cover them over with a cap. Just in case anything makes contact with them. Great to see the build coming on.

Nice and yeah, I know, the leisure battery is missing its box. It was supposed to be a temporary solution, the jackstrap and all, but been there for over a year now. 😅😅
Good thing to point out, get me to improve it. 👌 Need to do an electrical panel as well, get everything sorted.
Saw your pictures and your build is coming along nicely! I have still a bit of catchup to do. 😊
      Best, Simon

Also, the black corrugated stuff for your cables is called conduit 👍

Thanks! Not a word I use on a daily basis for sure. Best I could do was insulated tubing. 😂😂

Ser fram emot dual battery video installationen, Även bra att ha när man kör mkt dieselvärmare

Hey and thank you! There will be a separate video about the duel battery install, will film it this summer I hope so it's ready this fall. And I need to fix the remote control system for the FBH so I can pre warm it, I haven't done that yet. 😅 Best, Simon

Simon, it would have been easier to buy a strip light that self sticks along the rear of the tailgate. I fitted one under the bonnet (hood) which is brilliant (pun intended).

😂 Yeah, you are very right. Wait for part two and you see that our mind’s work alike. 😉
I need to do the same in my engine bay. But first the bonnet needs new struts. I always forget to order them until I need to do something. 😅
      Best, Simon

Hi Simon, I fitted 2 similar led lights in the top tailgate about where you plan to fit yours.
I also put a switch next to them, they are 9w .75a and provide plenty of light over my slide out kitchen.

Nice, I thought it would be a good place to put them. I have some bad experiences with poor lighting, in terms of placement, but luckily I have learned and are taking it into account this time. 😊
I’m not sure the light output or the amp draw of the lights, but it can’t be much.
I love these kind of jobs, cozy jobs I call them in Norwegian.

How's that AGM battery working for you? Any problems? I always thought you needed a special charging system for those types of batteries.

    • @LandRoverDrive

The AGM batteries are overall the better choice for most post 2000 cars. The one I'm about to replace, coming up in part 2, will have been in the car for around 7 years. I have had the car for 10 years now, and my alternator failed on me and I replaced the battery at the same time, as Erik told me that a failing alternator could kill the battery and a bad battery could kill the alternator. To answer your question, the AGM likes a bit higher voltage, typical 0.4v more than a lead acid, both in bulk, absorption and float state. Most modern smart charges support agm batteries. And the AGM batteries handles the D3's alternators charge in a good way. With outside temperatures, short vs long trips, life cycles, battery capacity and variable charging voltages from the alternator, being factors that will affect the life expectancy, the D3's charging is a small part. I tend to give the battery a maintenance charge before every long trip I go on, so around 10 times spread over the year. Are you planning to change out the battery?

@LandRoverDrive wow great explanation. Yes planning to change out the battery. So maintenance charge, is that recommended? I usually just leave it up to the alternator, but was always wondering about buying a maintenance charger.

Hey and sorry for the late reply. A agm battery is said to be maintenance free, but I recommend doing run a maintenance charge every three months with a good charger that has the correct charging setup/algorithm. Most new smart chargers handles agm so don't have to be an expensive one. I do this to make sure that the battery get's a "top off" charge, because I don't really know what the alternator is doing all the time or the state of the alternator. So this has been my rutine and as you will see in the new video released today, it seems to be the way to go... 😉
