- What is Apple’s Universal Control? How do you set up Universal Control with the M2 Mac Mini, MacBook Pro and M2 iPad Pro? Did you know that you can use a single keyboard and mouse - or even your iPad’s Magic keyboard - to control up to 3 Apple devices? It’s called Universal Control - it’s an incredible feature - and here’s how it works. By the way, I also added a troubleshooting section at the end, if you run into any problems.
We start out by setting up Universal Control on a Mac or Macbook. Then we move on to the setup process on the iPad. Once Universal Control is properly set up - we’ll cover the connection process and talk about how to arrange your monitors.
Next we’ll look at some unique iPad features and how to drag and drop between devices.
Finally, we’re go over how to disconnect Universal Control and then cover system requirements and troubleshooting.

For doing Universal Control between two macbook pros, do you enable UC on both or just one? I cannot get my setup to work. Two MBPs each with external monitors, UC enabled on each, bluetooth and wifi enabled (same wifi network), same apple ID, with 2FA

Hey @TechGearTalk thanks for this great video! Super concise and informative. I have a troubleshooting question for you though. I'm using a Logi Craft keyboard and while using Universal Control, my keyboard functions almost perfectly, except that I cannot use the "shift" key as a modifier. Meaning I cannot capitalize or use access special characters about my number keys, etc... thoughts on how to resolve this?

I f were to buy a new Mac mini M2 and want to control it with the keyboard and mouse of my Macbook Pro i7 as to not buy a dedicated keyboard and trackpad for the mini would that work? I use the Macbook Pro as a desktop connected to an LG 34" Ultrawide. I do like the 2 screen usage.

does this work the same way with the iPhone? If yes you have to log in with the same Apple ID?
Does it work with apple studio display? I am running my macbook 16" (2021) to the apple studio display as an external monitor with my macbook 16" lid closed and the universal control to my ipad pro 12.9" (5th gen) stopped working. I've tried turning off and on all these settings and restarting
I'd really love to be able to do this with an iPhone, as well. I like to use my old iPhone on a gimbal as a Continuity Camera, but I cannot see the screen... I can mirror the screen with Reflector, but I have not control... so if I could just get the mouse to push through like to an iPad, it would work great.
I discovered Universal Control a little while ago, and I've been having some fun with it. Sometimes I'll be working on my Mac desktop and have an entertainment video playing on my iPad Mini 6. I should point out I don't get much work done that way.
I have a macbook pro 2019 and an m1 ipad. Im thinking of buying mac studio m1 max but i want to control it via the macbook pro without any display hooked to the mac studio. What is the proper way of doing this? I also want to use the ipad sometimes to continue my edits i have started on the Mac Studio. Will be running premier on mac studio but controlling the computer via those 2 for comfort. Any ideas?

Depends on how you mean that. You can control your iPad from a MacBook without needing a trackpad on your iPad. The idea here is one keyboard and trackpad/mouse for multiple devices. You can also look up sidecar if you just need to use the iPad as a additional display

currently I am having a problem' when connecting the iPad to the Mac and try to type for example taking notes hitting the space key doesn't make a space in writing but directs me to the titles or the other fonts of the app which is simillar to hitting the tap key on Mac, a blue square is around the "done" button when opening a document or when writing an essay on word hitting the space key dissects me for the different options of the upper settings for example, the line size or switches between copy option and "B"/"U".....
I wish your read this and help me because of not god help me I am going to brake the iPad and the Mac

I use this every day, it's incredibly useful! Strangely, I could never get it to work between my Mac Studio and an M1 Mini - had to use the previous Intel-based Mini instead. Weird.

I’ve been having trouble with my universal control. I have an M1 MacMini and an M2 Air. Everything was working fine until the new update. Ever since than I have been having constant problems using this feature. I called in several times and they pretty much told my that I would have to wait until the next update to “see” if the problem was fixed. Not cool…

Yes.
I did not know I could share keyboard and mouse with more than two devices . Great video! I have a large 2nd display with my laptop which I love, it’s great to know I can throw my iPad in there if I need to😊
And if you only want the display - check out the Sidecar video at the end. It’s even easier.
Please can someone help me! I have been looking for this answer and can't find it anywhere! Can I drag my Illustrator or Safari window from my Imac to my macbook? How can I do that?
I think for this, you'd need to use Sidecar rather than Universal Control. From my understanding, Sidecar turns your ipad into a second monitor, where Universal Control allows you to quickly and easily bounce between the two different devices with the same mouse and keyboard, but they function independently.
i love how apple is really good at repackging techs in to a fancier one. KVM has been around for ages...

I wish the designated sound output could be shared. I would like to use the iPad for Zoom and Music and my Mac for programming. But then sometimes I want to watch UA-cam on my Mac’s browser. But there doesn’t seems to be a way for the sound to be “universal” like the keyboard and mouse.

What surprised me was being able to turn my tv to an extended display because it has an Apple TV connected

@@TechGearTalk my newest ipad just come by today (ipad pro M2), and I saw the spec of universal control still support my old ipad (ipad pro 9.7), but after digging inside, I didn’t find the option to use universal control between both of my ipad.

btw when you change user on Mac which is using different Apple ID or it can be using non ( as a guest) and switch back to the user which have the same Apple ID like the Mac you will not be able to reconnect the iPad to the Mac unless you restart the godamn Mac

Any tips for the slow scrolling speed if I use my iPad Magic Keyboard to scroll on my MacBook? Whenever I use the Magic Keyboard as my keyboard and mouse, it’s like I’m scrolling through mud on the Mac

This function doesn't work well anymore. After the latest updates, it's a complete mess.😪
Great video! I discovered that only one user should be logged into a Mac device in order to use Universal Control. I spent more than 30 minutes playing around trying to figure why it wasn’t working for me. It worked after I logged out of my wife’s user account and only I was logged in.

Cheers for the video.... I have a Macbook Pro & iPad Pro 12.9 (4th Generation) with Magic Keyboard & pencil and when using the Apple Trackpads and Keyboards this works great! Although one watch out I have to share is that it doesn't work with my Logitech MX Keys (Mac) and MX Master Mouse!
Unfortunately when using 3rd party tools, with the scroll function will scroll the screen the mouse is connected (eg my Mac) to even when the mouse cursor is on the iPad! And for the keyboard, capital and shift in general doesn't work on the second machine!
As I say it works perfectly when using the keyboard and the mouse attached to my tech, so I can only presume that Apple has curtailed 3rd party gear - perhaps it will be fixed in the future, but for now it's a no go which renders this somewhat useless with stand alone keyboards and mouse - for me anyway!
