I can think of a good reason for Universal control on iphone: file sharing. Iphone camera is wayyy more mobile than ipad and depending on which Ipad, the camera quality could be much better on iphone. in my experience airdrop hasnt been as reliable as I had hoped. could be a great work around. And same utility for Iphone to mac or macbook if you are editing on that and not your ipad.
I can’t wait for this, my iPad lives on a monitor arm just under my Mac displays. This is going to be such a productivity boost for me.
I’m a an unabashed huge apple fanboy, totally immersed in the apple ecosystem. Universal Control has been an amazingly useful feature for me. Love the channel Chris! Super excellent content. Thank you!
This functionality exists on logitech peripherals. It works the same way and it's cross platform. You can seamlesly move your mouse between linux/windows/macos/ios and android devices. They also have keyboards that do the same.
Maybe the guy was paid for this

It's not the same experience, you can't move files from one device to another, for example. And it's not as seamlessly as the Apple universal control. You don't even need to install any third party app to be able to use universal control. You can't do the same with logitech.
@@raphaelmartins6529 while I agree that EXPERIENCE might not be the same, just like with most apple products, but there's no lack of functionality with logitech mice and keyboard. Coursor seamlesly goez from one screen to the other, you CAN copy files and so on. Yes you need to install logitech software on devices you want to use your peripherals with, but it also allows you to move files across different OS and not just apple eco system.
And all this functiobality were available like 5 years ago on all platforms to whoever needed it.
As an apple user and after seeing the new tab s8+, I think the iPad is sorely lacking in terms of what it could do.
Giggity! Just found your page. I just went to Mac from 30 years of PC as a reseller because my eyesight has gotten worse. My software on the Mac is included with zoom features that I would have had to get a special program for had I gotten a PC. So right now, I have my 27" iMac running with Windows Remote Desktop (my quoting system requires PC) with very little lag. I quickly move over a 2nd window to my iPad Pro 12.9" holding down the green circle and selecting "iPad Pro". My iPhone/iPad Pro/Imac has been a cohesive workflow that no android or PC has ever given to me.
I've been using the public beta and Universal Control on my M1 Mac mini, and it's been great! I do have an issue with mouse scroll wheels, like you said…best to use Apple peripherals for now (though my Keychron keyboard's actually been pretty solid). I also have an Intel MBP, so it's been wild to go across and drag files between a MBP, iPad Pro, and Mac mini in various display configurations. Wow!
Is it available yet? I have an M1 iMac and M1 iPad Pro but don’t know how to use it. :S
@@migueljackson9230 Only in the Public Beta program at the moment. I have betas on all my devices (except iPhone) and they seem pretty solid, but YMMV.
Can you close iPad apps with the mouse?
One of the things I used in the past, Sharemouse, was awesome to control my surface tablet and Mac Mini but it used Wi-Fi and had some considerable lag. It looks like universal control uses Bluetooth instead, and there hasn’t been any noticeable lag for me. Granted, you can’t use it to control a windows device.
How do you get the magic keyboard to connect and type on the Mac? I got the mouse working, but my iPads magic keyboard won’t connect.

No one mentions that we don't have to buy iPad Magic Keyboard
I have used it. I moved my iPad into another room and noticed the mouse cursor was still in the screen. Clearly I couldn’t use the mouse from the mac and once I started using the ipad the mouse cursor went away. Lesson learned. Make sure you move the cursor off the ipad if moving to another room for some reason.
Love that you play halo on your right monitor. I have a similar setup with Dell monitors and a centered iPad. Left monitor high PPI for design, right monitor 1ms response for halo gaming!

Fantastic video. Can you do a workflow video using Universal Control? So just to be clear, this could actually make it more seamless than air drop?

After so long and rewatching this video, I found universal control less useful than I expected because of the existence of Sidecar. Compared to universal control, Sidecar is way less stable, and the experience is sometimes less refined especially when you try to use touch gestures or the Apple Pencil. But still, having a second monitor makes more sense than having a large iPhone screen next to me. I get why iPadOS should stay but my alternative take on it is that it is not meant for keyboard and mouse input. Stage Manager on iPad is really good, but only using touch, not a trackpad or mouse. As a Mac user, I find a lot of essential shortcuts still missing on iPadOS and more importantly, I don't see a point in taking my iPad out instead of my MacBook for any work focused on typing. I find the iPad perfect for artists and graphic designers and with apps like Logic Pro and DaVinci Resolve on the iPad, I would say that the iPad is truly beneficial to my workflow. I just don't see the point of using keyboard and trackpad full time on an iPad. That's why I am totally aginst the Magic Keyboard especially after considering the high price and more importantly, the weight.
Doesn't Logitech have a mouse with this support with FLOW even between Linux, Mac, win and Android ?
Not many people have made good videos about new setup opportunities when it comes to Universal Control, GREAT VIDEO I have been looking forward to the complete change in how I use my back book and iPad Pro when this comes out, and I’m so excited to see videos like this one! I am very excited for the official public release!
Not gonna lie, I love Apple Pay and continuity and that's it. I love how I can switch between my Mac mini, MacBook Pro and iPad with the trackpad and keyboard. Haven't found out how to switch windows between the two or three seamlessly. I guess it can't be done. I guess I'm ok with that. I'll just use my Mac and MacBook Pro as my workstation. Respect!! I'll continue to use both but, Android as my mine phone OS and my iPhone as my secondary.
Indeed a big step for power users. Especially the right arrangement of the devices improves workflow.

I’m using it to turn my macbook into a third display for my mac studio. I LOVE it, but the scaling is REALLY bad. If they fix that, this is the best apple feature EVER

This just makes me even more excited to get my on Mac book! I already use my iPad as a second monitor and this just takes it to a whole new level! 😆. But I did find it a bit disappointing that you can’t drag window tabs to and from your iPad/ Mac book or or PC.
+1 on the ecosystem. I do run the same setup with 2 Samsung curved monitors. And apple trackpad instead of the mouse. Highly recommended.
Universal control is so good right now. I do understand that Apple wanna make more profit so they still refused to merge the iPad and Mac. So I got sold and bought both. I mainly take my iPad outside and leave my Mac at home. The only thing I find annoying is that iPads have simplified versions of certain apps and some keyboard shortcuts are missing in apps but I am fine with that

My universal control between iPad pro and MacBook did not function. It was working the first time.
1. I m connecting to the same 5G wifi router
2. same Apple ID
3. both the latest update of the system
4. both are enabled handoff, universal control enabled.
weirdly , my iPad only can extend my screen from the MacBook but it just won't work as universal control.

The MagicBoard for iPad doesn't support gestures yet, which means you can only drag and click but no swipe using the built-in trackpad.
works with M1 Mac mini. Tested after seeing this video. I wish that it allows the use of iPad camera given mac mini does not have camera and mic.

Can you control the Mac from your iPad without the Magic Keyboard or trackpad?
I have the iPad Air 4 and a MacBook Pro 13" M1, this is EXTREMELY unreliable for me, it does not work on most wifi, on my home wifi when I come home I have to reboot the iPad multiple times, usually need to disable "Cursor and Keyboard" before powering off, then back on and enable before it (sometimes) finally shows up. Does this work reliably for you?

Thank you for this. I just grabbed a deal on 8 core GPU 256GB model iMac 24 from Amazon and it cost £200 dollars less than apple education. I have a M1 iPad Pro 2TB and a M1 Pro 14 10/16/1TB so figured use universal control across all three and then still have a solo iMac for the family at my standing desk and not just pay 1.5K for the new display.
Perfect setup! Unfortunately I did all instructions but still I don’t have sidecar in my system preference and nor a button anywhere for Connect To, wirelessly and by cable connecting my iPad Pro 12.9 to iMac :( please help.

Are you using iPad Pro or iPad Air? I have an iMac, I am really happy to learn about this universal control feature so I can share my keyboard and mouse with the iPad. Now considering whether I should pay for the extra bucks for the iPad Pro thinking that it'd be an extra monitor.
I am thinking about going for iPad Air before because I don't really need super high resolution, I don't game, I don't do graphic design) I was thinking of using the iPad as a elevated Kindle + notetaker (I take a lot of notes 24/7) - any advice?

I haven't been able to use sidecar and universal at the same time so I think the Luna Display system solution is more robust albeit $100 --you get the combination of Sidecar and Universal control to iPad or another Mac.

Amazing what you can do with a mere $8,000 tech budget. Still, if as a power user you need it to work as well as possible, this seems great.

Looking forward to this. iPad Pro was supposed to support mouse through Bluetooth but mine flat out refused. Had an Apple Genius on Zoom for about an hour, no luck. Am hoping UC is the solution.
Is universal control fast for transferring files? Like say you transfer a 1GB file. How long would it take?

Hi Cris! Thank you for this review. One question which is a go / no go for me. Would UC allow me to use apple pencil on iPad to access Macbook screen (basically iPad as a touch bar) and interact with the Mac applications? Say for example I'm sharing my screen on my Macbook during the live demo with my customers and I want to use the pencil to quickly select and screenshot a part of my screen and make a simple sketch or diagram on this screenshot (and of course my customers should be able to see all this). Would I be able to do this?
I’m a little confused on the purpose of the 2 docks. Is the Brydge Dock mostly for cable management and to drive dual monitor? What’s the purpose of the secondary dock? On your gaming screen, how do you have both the Xbox and Mac plugged in - Does it have 2 HDMI inputs? I have a similar setup that I’m trying to see if I can simplify. I have a really crappy 3 to 1 HDMI switch that switches via an IR remote between PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch on 1 27” monitor. Wondering if one (or both these docks) could make that more seamless. Can’t wait to be able to control my Mac via my iPad 12.9 keyboard!

Everything has been working well for me however the Drag and Drop feature doesn't seem to be working with my current set-up. Anybody else experiencing the same problem/bug? Hopefully it gets resolved in the upcoming updates.

The Mac mini is working great with universal control. Only limitation I'm seeing is some lag from time to time and the MX Master 3 doesn't allow me to scroll on the iPad. Does your's work??
Microsoft actually had this features for years that's called "Mouse without Borders" however they did not promote the feature the same way Apple did.
Samsung and huawei's ecosystem had this for a while too, who will tell them 🤣🤣🤣
iOS just needs to actually be accessible for development. Once that happens, I'll happily flesh out for the best iPad Pro on the market and do this very thing. I would much rather carry around that and a iPad Magic Keyboard than a laptop.
