    Things to test GH5 on the photo side:
    - Color improvements over GH4
    - Dynamic range (better highlight recovery or better shadow recovery?)
    - Best color profiles in post-processing. I love Cinelike V.
    - Raw sharpness vs. Fuji and Sony
    - Lowlight AF
    - AF management (thumbstick)
    - Slowest handholdable shutter
    - Flash sync, Flash capabilities.
    - DFD vs Non-DFD lens behavior.
    - Wifi control

    Justin! Great 1st time leading the video. Hope we get to see more of you! Tony and Chelsea are among my favorite UA-camrs because of their down to earth personality and humorous content! But it's great to see them bring the camera man from the background to the forefront. I love it!

    When you're on movie mode in the dial, there's an icon on the top left of the screen that tells you if you're on move A, S, P, M mode. If you press that icon on the top left of the screen, it's a quicker way to select whether to go A, S, P or M mode in movie vs. going through the menu system.

      I just program the movie modes I want into C1... C2... C3 and you also have main movie dial too... That's four entirely different movie modes on the dial... There's no need to go through the program functions each time you want to change...

    Nice video and always good to hear real world experiences as they are just as valuable as testing. Great early review guys, can't wait to see the full one! Since the 6K photo mode was marketed quite heavily I'd love to see a comparison of the 6K photo mode quality and flexibility to regular photos. I know it uses HVEC (h.265) which hold detail much better than h.264 but I would guess it be be worse than shooting a JPEG and much worse than RAW. I pull stills from 4K often and know I can get some good results video if I had everything perfect but the files are not very flexible in post and fall apart quickly. THANKS GUYS!

    Everyone benefits from 4k - it forces the bandwidth up and generates a sharper looking image on 1080p displays.

    • @RobertKwolek
      @RobertKwolek 7 років тому +2

      Exactly. UA-cam has such a low bitrate for 1080p so downscaling 4K is the only way to get decent video quality. Even on my 24" 1080p display it's a very noticeable improvement.

    • @Ty4ons
      @Ty4ons 7 років тому

      The GH5 4k60p footage looks stunning on my 1080p display. It's not just the YT compression (then you could just upscale 1080p to 4k to workaround that), I think straight out of camera it looks sharper and even when selecting 1080p in YT native 4k footage tends to look sharper. I guess it is because most cameras have quite a soft output at 1080p.

    • @edwardbrown2142
      @edwardbrown2142 7 років тому

      Ty4ons there is a noticeable difference in quality toggling between resolutions, and upscaling is common practice.

    • @Ty4ons
      @Ty4ons 7 років тому

      Edward Brown Oh, I know. My point is native 1080p in most cameras is quite soft so the boost in sharpness you get from 4k is still noticable at 1080p.

    First off, this video is awesome! Justin and Tony, the conversation between the two of you all was about the features and functions of the GH5 was wonderful. Secondly, Sony really needs to get it together with the battery life of their cameras. Many professionals and serious video enthusiasts will not take Sony cameras seriously because of the poor battery life. Thirdly, Tony.....I really believe that you are at your best at these in-dept techie videos, which I love so much. Keep'em coming man! Lastly, I still remain dedicated to still photos as oppose to video shooting, but I do enjoy the video aspects of your channel. Then channel if very informative and entertaining, except the 'chit chat' segments.

  • @bobhanuman65
    @bobhanuman65 7 років тому

    The GH5 is an awesome incredibly solid production camera. There seems to be a lot of whining about autofocus out there without really targeting what is really spectacular about this camera. I have a bunch of interview/profile/story videos to do with my yoga students and filmed the first one yesterday. I am doing it alone with 2 cameras so i don't have time to turn the camera on and off without distracting the person who is being interviewed so I just let it run. Yesterday it was over an hour straight. I was filming in C4k 24fps with a 12-35 2.8 OIS Panasonic lens as my main camera and I had a Fuji XT2 as a second angle in BW. There was not a hiccup with the GH5. All natural light with a wired lav. The Fuji cut out after 10min and I was too distracted to turn it back on again. When I got to look at the footage I was so impressed, with the color, with the clarity and overall quality of the image. I was so upset with the FUJI that I will certainly trade it and the lenses i have and get a 2nd GH5. I know this camera will not let me down. I don't have to worry about overheating or record time limits and can just focus on my subject and get a great interview. I think Sony gets a free ride on the REAL LIFE production capabilities and ease of use for someone in my situation who has to go it alone. BTW, I was in manual focus mode.

    Assuming Chelsea/Madelyn can’t work the studio stuff I would prefer it just left to record with no cuts and both of you in front of the camera (preferably mix in the footage after but optional). To be able to change the mode dial to be a movie only dial if needed would be brilliant. Untile then, just like in the GH4, I use the 3 available ,,C,, positions all customised for video mode, and it mostly eliminates that problem for me. But still a switchable functions dial would be nicer.

    Thanks for this. Nice to see Justin talk about his real world use of this camera, especially the AF. I believe the concerns with the continuous AF are ridiculous. As you said, no camera is perfect and even the Sony cameras have occasional issues. I have done, and continue to do, testing of my GH5 continuous AF with the 12-35 V2 and have found AF not to be an issue for what I will use it for. Of course, the overall features of this amazing camera speak for themselves.
    Looking forward to your full review.

  • @Eric_Rossi
    @Eric_Rossi 7 років тому +12

    Justin video! I wouldn't say the focus is a dslr vs mirrorless thing. The Sony is pretty damn good and pretty accurate. Canons dual pixel af is king. But the Panasonic so far just isn't good. Yet I hope. But the video options for this price is insane.

    • @SullyCortez
      @SullyCortez 7 років тому +3

      Eric Rossi very well said sir. In my experience so far, professionally and yes professionals DO use these cameras for those who think they don't, the AF is quite unreliable. For UA-cam videos it works ok, still though it IS unreliable right out of the box. But as far as operability, it is lightyears above anything else in its price class. I will say it does feel like a GH3 in the sense that it's features overall aren't as mindblowing or 'ahead' of its time at being the first like the GH4 was, but so far I'm enjoying my time with it. Is it better than the A6500 which I own, or the GH4 itself.... it depends on your use for it.... if you strictly want the best autofocus then you might want to look at the canons and Sonys at this current time, but if you want a camera you really don't have to worry about and is gonna get the job done everytime... the GH5 is def THE camera to consider at this price range.

    Thumbs up. As someone who is purchasing the gh5 for video, the auto focus controversy is moot for me, as I will be shooting in manual mode 100% of time. I will mate my gh5 with the metabones booster and decades old prime Nikkors. I was weaned decades ago on pure manual focus and am quite comfortable with it. I have learned to think ahead, preset focus, set hyper focal distance, preset aperture stopped down, etc. For shooting wide apertures for blurred/bokeh background, I obviously have to be more precise. But my research says that the lcd and evf on the gh5 are absolutely superb, along with focus peaking. As for follow focusing with wide f/stop/aperture, it helps to practice a lot and have a well smooth and well damped focus ring. I mean, world class cinematographers have been doing it manually for a hundred years. Man up and be your own focus puller!:) I even have a diy method of setting physical focus stops on manual lenses...a little masking tape and small metal pins. But with the great articulating lcd on the gh5, it may be quicker and easier to simply mark the focusing stops and ranges with a pen for visual reference.

    Things to review: AF versus EM1M2 in stills and video & AF with speedbooster and APSC lenses
    Its weird I got a EM1M2 last month and have mostly done stills with it and love the camera. I noticed my viewing of camera review videos has gone down a lot (and I have so much more free time!!!) but really curious as to how speedboosters work with the GH5 and EM1M2. Most of the videos I have seen have been people who just use manual focus and I would like to see some real world experience and see how good the autofocus is with a speedbooster - great, terrible, alright for walking around, etc. I would really like to know. Is it really accurate to say that mirrorless autofocus will never be as good as DSLRs? For example, is the Dual Pixel AF in the EOS M5 substantially worse than in the 80D? Casey Neistat has switched from the 80D to a6500 and I haven't noticed the AF to be noticeable poorer.

    Tony I bought a Nikon D500 last year which I would like to use for video as well as stills. I realise it is not designed to be as accomplished at vid as the GH 5 and I am wondering if I have bought into the wrong system

    • @mas921
      @mas921 7 років тому

      Tim Rogers D500 was built for a different purpose entirely, it is a stills images speed demon, but with a very basic festure list as a video camera vs gh5 or a6500 or 80D. (think like a "Ferrari doesn't do well in snow" LOL) although the 4k bit rate is quite good and it has a Mic and headphone jacks. but no focus peeking, no zebra, video AF is very old and no log profiles. so again d500 is arguably the best aps-c in stills performance, but in video; it's towards the end of the pack feature wise.
      ... now if only Nikon brings out a camera with their "quad pixel" on sensor PDAF patent they had awhile back they would kill'em all...>_

    Hello, Many people have valid questions on the focusing system. But what about the lens quality? The two typical scenarios I have in mind are filming a group of 1-2 people from 10 or 20 ft away, and slightly larger groups at 30-60 ft away... usually in not-so-great lighting conditions (i.e. in a shop). I have compared videos I take with my D7100 with others taken with different video camera and i have yet to find an affordable video camera that gives me sharp images. Would this one be a contender? Or any other suggestions?

    My suggestions for your gh5 tests: Dynamic range of the gh5 and how it relates to the real world of the end viewer. My point is that the gh5 or even gh4 already have a higher dynamic range than the monitor or TV the viewer will use 99% of the time. And the web viewing such as youtube and its image degrading compression for example and how dynamic range is affected. Compare the gh5's dynamic range to its exposure latitude, so many shooters forget about the latitude part of the equation imo. It's been my experience in video that many of the shortcomings of DSLR/DSLM dynamic range/latitude, can be greatly overcome by simply shooting in lower contrast settings, and/or manipulating the settings indoors or outdoors with fill light, bounce cards, flags, etc. Check out the making of movies videos and how many world class cinematographers will wait out the weather for softer and lower contrast light...even 35mm film and Arris have their exposure limitations.

    I know Gary Vaynerchuk's cameraman, DRock, uses a Sony Alpha camera, and I regularly see focus hunting and drifting on his videos. It seems to just be the way it is with video AF, and is likely something viewers will just get used to and not even notice at some point.

    You haven't seen any overheating yet but have you seen any noise performance changes after long record times? This has been a huge issue with the a7rii and gh4 after about 30 minutes of recording in 4k it doesn't overheat but it gets warm and horribly noisy.

    Thanks for the review Tony. I would like to see I bit more about the IBIS and In particular a comparison of its effectiveness between different lenses. Also IF the autofocus problems are related to a "processor allocation" issue, whether or not the IBIS makes the autofocus worse or nor (assuming that the IBIS takes up a fair amount of the cameras processing resources.

    hey guys, can you test the GH5 as a classic 'stills' camera? Image quality, low light, focusing, fps, dynamic range etc. Do You recon one could get away with only this camera for both video and stills (portrait, sports etc). Thanks for those smart reviews.

    I'm interested in seeing photo quality. Not the ISO tests. See if you can get some studio time with chalsea and a light because all reviews give us boring ISO tests when they can give "stunning digital photography." Most people are sold on the video but we would also like to see what the camera can do with stills and with lens recommendation and even a lighting system recommendation that supports strobes ...ttl

    Great video! Thanks guys! I would love to see in your review some tests vs the 5D4 with the Dual AF and the GH5's AF. I got my GH5 last week too and trying to decide between that and the 5D4. For the type of video work I do (steadycam, events, weddings, one person mini docs, etc) it would be great to have the great Canon focus and low light but don't I know if I want the big files and the 1.7 crop. I own a fair bit of canon glass and so if I stay with the GH5 then I would have to use the metebones which would make the AF even worse. It would make it about a 1.3 crop so that would be better than 1.7 but it is still a 4/3 sensor. Any thoughts T&C and Justin? Thanks again!

    Hi Tony, Crew,
    Rather than putting a pop filter on that mic, have you tried the Electro-Voice RE-20 or RE-320 mics?
    They don't suffer from bass boom and have built-in pop filters. Couple them to a Symetrix 528e Voice Processor or Rupert Neve Portico 5015 and you're literally talking Butter Cream audio. If you'd like to try one, I can loan you an RE-320. Can't loan the Portico though.

    Hi Tony and Justin, I'm not really a "video user" of my photocamera... but I was asking myself, if one use the camera only for the video part isn't a Panasonic HC-X1000 or something similar a better choice, than a still photocamera like the GH5 ??!?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  7 років тому +1

      It's better for some because the form factor and usability are better... but the video quality isn't as good, it's less discreet, more expensive, and doesn't let you change lenses.

    In some tests of the GH5 with Sigma 18-35 1.8 (EF mount) + Metabones XL, I've seen some strong vignetting occur on left and right borders of the frame, during panning, if IBIS was turned on... Does this happen to you guys in UHD or full 4K mode? Could this have been fixed somehow in some firmware update? I'd really prefer to buy the Metabones XL version instead of Ultra... :)
