Your B-Roll footage looks absolutely stunning. And your review is on-point, fast and extremely detailed. Talking about the user experience more than simply going over the specs is what sets you apart, I love it. Great stuff.
I've been drooling over this since it was announced. One day I'll get it when my channel is a bit more established. Thank you for the video. I'm glad you hit on the firmware updates. I think Panasonic will be improving this beast for a long time to come.
Interesting to learn about part of the magic behind your videos. I've said this before...Image Quality in your videos are second to none!. Excellent work!
Also big thumbs up for Natural profile. That's pretty much the only profile I have been using. The colors are really clean, I dig it. Still waiting on the larger codec for getting the most out of vlog 10 bit.
Agreed! Can't wait for the full info to come out on 400 mbps as i will need to buy new SD cards to support it. Lovely camera, your rope jumping in the mountains video made me buy it ha :p -Dmitry.
I need to learn to photography and camera stuff lol... Im trying to shop for one that will do still shots as well as some 1080 and 4k vids any suggestions?
How do you get that out-of-focus blur on MFT sensor? Prime lens, I know, but I'm not sure how do you achieve that. When I used 30 mm F2.8 on 1.5 crop sensor, I couldn't blur background as much on the distance of getting a person in the frame. You're doing it with smaller sensor and you're getting DOF big enough to make all the subject sharp.
Thanks for reply. Fast lens will give much more shallow DOF and it'll be tricky to put the subject in it entirely. I've tried with 50mm F1.8 on APS-C. However, it is more close to what I want to achieve than 30 mm F2.8. I don't know how do you guys use manual focus for video when shooting people, BTW.
So comparing between Sony a7sii or GH5, which one is a more suitable option for film? I record video majority for film rather than vlogging, so 60FPS 4K is not a concern to me, but rather the color, the slow-mo capability and log profile would be my concerns.
Have you and Eber done a comparison of your GH5 vs his C100? With the C100 being a "proper" cinema camera, I feel like the GH5 really does have a lot going for it at the price. Yes there are plenty of pros and cons for each, like the built in ND filters, but what do you think?
C100 has an incredible image out of the box. Canon color science is on point, low-light is incredible, the Super35 sensor delivers a very pleasing DOF etc, plus those built-in NDs... but if you want a compact 4K monster, the GH5 is a clear winner. With a MetabonesSB and fast glass, you can almost re-create a C100 look.
My last 3 videos were filmed entirely with the GH5 I love it! 4k 60fps is my favourite feature. Great video by the way I've Subbed and like you, my other camera is the G7 which I use the Sigma 18-35mm lens with.
Hey, that is Vitosha mountain in 10:54, I had no idea you live in Bulgaria, cheers. Also that makes me curious how do you acquire MSI laptops, cause I cant seem to find a company that imports them here.
100% of the footage in this video of the GH5 body + my on-cam portion was shot with the G7! It's such an excellent camera for the price. With proper lighting and a fast lens, the image quality is incredible!
Using the GH5 with the Sigma, do you have the Metabones Ultra or XL? Curious on if you don't use 18-22mm with the XL since it vignettes in video, or went with the ASP-C Ultra version of metabones. thanks!
Very nice review. Constant Preview is only for Manual Mode and can give poor results if setting very slow shutter speed or in low light. I think that is why it is off by default as it looks like the camera is broken if you do not know what is going on.
the camera automatically conforms the slow-motion so it sets the final footage frame rate to what you have set with your resolution. Say you do 4K 30p with VFR at 60, you will still get a 30fps file but it will be 2x slow down from 60.
even though the sensor is such a big upgrade.... but I still would say that it's system setting redesign and reorganisation is the biggest upgrade from the GH4
The 10-bit example was unfortunately useless, UA-cam doesn't seem to process 10 bit color information so the gradient was about the same, if anything I think the 10 bit was a bit worse possibly due to compression on UA-cam's end.
Are you using a 4K display? I'm looking at this at 4K right now, the grading is pretty bad for both, even worse on the 10-bit side. In 1080p both have much smoother gradients than 4K playback on a native 4K screen from what I can see. I'd maybe give it to 10-bit as well when watching with the video player set to 1080p. UA-cam recommends and probably reencodes footage to 4:2:0, just google UA-cam recommended bitrate. This is 4:2:2 footage as far as I know.
It was a 4k display but i saw it in 1080p. I am pretty sure its not about the resolution. Try viewing colour graded videos and the difference will be very much noticeable. You will notice banding in the sky in 8 bit codes. Try watching some colour graded a7sii footage and then graded 10 bit gh5 footage and look for areas with uniform colour.
I wasn't saying 10-bit was useless and that it doesn't make a difference, I was saying in this footage/example when watching it in 4K, UA-cam seems to have butchered the quality of it, while the 1080p playback seems to be just fine.
In terms of recording video, sorry if I missed it, but does it record for the standard 29 min then stop or does it continue to make files once the time limit has been reached? Great video btw!!!
You have unlimited recording time :D either the battery runs out or you fill up both SD cards. On my G7, the files are broken up in 3+ GB while on the GH5 it's one single file.
Awesome video! Such a cool camera! I'm about to get one, but have never had an actual good camera before, and still don't really understand the lenses. Can you suggest a good type of lens for filming things close to the camera, like 8 inches away up to a few feet away? like for filming trading cards. one of the things i am going to use the camera for is to film unboxing videos, and trading card opening videos. I also need a good suggestion for a type of lens to film the upcoming fireworks show. thanks in advance for any advice
Get the kit lens. Learn the kit lens. Only use the kit lens :) The new 12-60 is awesome, or if you want consistent aperture through the zoom, 12-35mm is great too.
5D2 is a Full Frame DSLR. Used it for good 3 years before switching to GH4. It's incredible for photography, and creative 1080p video because of that DOF with the right lenses. But for video in 2017, it's deff the GH5!
Given that you have the metabones adapter and the 18-35 sigma, what do you set the focal length for stabilization? Do you mind sharing the formula, if there is one? For example, is it lowest zoom setting (18) x2 xmetabones XL or UL value? Thank you!
Dimitri - i am a content creator considering my first camera. Been using a Google pixel phone to shoot currently. Would the g7 be a decent upgrade, or what would your opinion be?
I have a couple of GH4's and have been holding back as I wanted to see enough reviews so see its faults, I will most likely get the GH5, but with the Atomos Ninja Inferno Monitor Recorder. i edit on FCP X and DaVinci Resolve 14 (upgraded from 12.5) this seems a great upgrade, going to get a couple of 10tb 256mb cache hdd's and run them in raid 0, to store the files on.
I dont understand anything related to cameras, but I am just here for hardware canucks amazing videos :)
Dat focus pull from the lcd to optical viewfinder in the reflection! #lit
hey you finally caved and watched :) lol
-Dmitry.
The video screams quality. Excellent job.
Your B-Roll footage looks absolutely stunning. And your review is on-point, fast and extremely detailed. Talking about the user experience more than simply going over the specs is what sets you apart, I love it. Great stuff.
man... why are you so amazing with your hands and cinematography.
Omg was this the first glimpse of mrs. Hardware Canucks
Nicholas says where?
Nicholas says where she at doe
For your info, she appeared briefly in their One Plus 3T review
WOW, fantastic video! Love the camera work and quality!
I've been drooling over this since it was announced. One day I'll get it when my channel is a bit more established. Thank you for the video. I'm glad you hit on the firmware updates. I think Panasonic will be improving this beast for a long time to come.

yeah the groot
HardwareCanucks my life will be completed. do it pls
GH4 OR G85 I really need help in choosing a camera I mostly want to make comedy films
Such a superb review of the GH5. One of the best, especially with the very awesome b-roll.
Was really looking forward to hearing your thoughts Dimitry!
The Gh5 has become a huge favourite of mine as well. It's super powerful.
Lovely camera, your rope jumping in the mountains video made me buy it ha :p
-Dmitry.
FINALLY, NOT A PAID ONE PLUS 5 REVIEW! :)
Beautiful review, makes me want to buy one!
+TechAltar it's good!
Fantastic review, great work man!
Thank you for watching :)
this is your 1000th video!!! congratulations!
Camera work is so intimidating lol, you guys make it look easy!
Very nice!
Great Demo.
love those gels!! Awesome review!
Thanks Matt :) Give Ash the biggest hug from me when you greet him in the Canada land
Awesome review, thanks! I might have to upgrade :)
best GH5 review ever. Good job man
Thank you :)
Excellent summary of this camera. Thanks!
Coming from a X-T1 all I can say is WOW!!!! I love my GH5, couldn't ask for more.
It's a great tool :)
Great review Dmitry!!!
That optical viewfinder shot was brilliant.
Also, confirmed, I need this camera.
lol :) excited to see what you could potentially shoot with it man! I still use the G7 :)
G7 is great, but those higher framerates, 400Mbps 10-bit, IBIS and V-LOG L would be soooo useful.
It doesn't get any better at that price point
Im thinking of that one to. Just the auto focus that geting me to hesitate. But seems to be nice :) Did like the 4K slowmotion you did show :)
Only thing sexier than Dimitri is that lens.
DistortedRain does anyone know the lens from the start of the video? doesn't look like a kit lens.
Hey, Its the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC with a metabones adaptor,
Sigma ART 18-35mm F1.8.. I have one of these with my Cano 70D... excellent lens... worth every cent.
I need to learn to photography and camera stuff lol... Im trying to shop for one that will do still shots as well as some 1080 and 4k vids any suggestions?
Now put your hands together :OOOooo
whoa, this camera 💙
Excellent stuff! Thank you!
What is it like taking stills?
LOVE THE REVIEW MAN! I'm saving up for a GH5 + 12-35mm v2, I'm halfway there!
+Rephael Catap :) good luck! It's worth it!
Please do more camera reviews! Love your videos :)
Nice review. Gives me more confidence to stick with natural picture profile and 8 bit.
Nice review. I have been shooting with the GH4 for 2 years and have my eye on the GH5.
Amazing footage - where was that taken?
Nice comprehensive GH5 review. 😏👍

Yes use fast lenses 😎
Thanks for reply.

skin tones in portrait profile is also great to use according to wolfcrow channel. an awesome cinematographer, very detailed in his GH5 review.
Great review. I also constantly find myself accidentally pressing the display button. Weird placement for it, but just one extra thing to be aware of.
Very review. Keep up the good work.
Nice review....very informative...try including picture stuff when possible...cheers!!!
So comparing between Sony a7sii or GH5, which one is a more suitable option for film?
I record video majority for film rather than vlogging, so 60FPS 4K is not a concern to me, but rather the color, the slow-mo capability and log profile would be my concerns.
Where do I get the Bachground-Image on the screen at 3:10 from ?
Have you and Eber done a comparison of your GH5 vs his C100? With the C100 being a "proper" cinema camera, I feel like the GH5 really does have a lot going for it at the price. Yes there are plenty of pros and cons for each, like the built in ND filters, but what do you think?

Great Video! May I ask how you tweak your natural profile? Thank you!
My last 3 videos were filmed entirely with the GH5 I love it! 4k 60fps is my favourite feature. Great video by the way I've Subbed and like you, my other camera is the G7 which I use the Sigma 18-35mm lens with.
What your settings for the gh5
This is probably the best tech review video I've ever seen. Informative and gorgeous throughout.
Appreciate it :)
Hey guys, what song from 0:20 to 0:57 ?
What are you perimeters for the natural profile you use? I mean contrast, saturation, noise reduction and sharpness.
Contrast -2, Sharpness -2, NR 0, Saturation -2, Hue +1
Great! Thank you so much! Keep posting your good work.
That Simga lens is interesting. On a micro 4 / 3 platforms its like a really fast, comparatively cheap standard zoom
doesn't the g7 have the same crop factor when shooting 4k?
Hey, that is Vitosha mountain in 10:54, I had no idea you live in Bulgaria, cheers. Also that makes me curious how do you acquire MSI laptops, cause I cant seem to find a company that imports them here.
Come on Dimitri! We deserve a longer montage than that!
And here I am getting excited about possibly buying a G7 😁
100% of the footage in this video of the GH5 body + my on-cam portion was shot with the G7! It's such an excellent camera for the price. With proper lighting and a fast lens, the image quality is incredible!
Just got my G7 today, excited to put it to use! :D
Do you shoot in Vlog L for the majority of your video?
Using the GH5 with the Sigma, do you have the Metabones Ultra or XL? Curious on if you don't use 18-22mm with the XL since it vignettes in video, or went with the ASP-C Ultra version of metabones.
thanks!
What is the usic at 0:40
I barely understood any of what you were talking about, but loved the amazing video footage :D
Awesome detailed review! I wonder if you would also do a review on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and how that compares to the GH5.
Would you suggest getting GH4 as an entry level for starting filmmaker?
No. Get the G85 instead.
Very nice review.
Constant Preview is only for Manual Mode and can give poor results if setting very slow shutter speed or in low light. I think that is why it is off by default as it looks like the camera is broken if you do not know what is going on.
dmitry when u show the slo mo camera foootage, do use the high framerate from the camera or u add it in post process

What did you guys do with the XT2? Was it just for fun or still in use?
in the cinematic shots at the beginning, did you do any color grading, or was ist just raw footage?
Hi there , what filter you use !?
No filter on the lens. Sometimes a 6x ND filter from B&W
Thoughts on the A7R-II?
even though the sensor is such a big upgrade.... but I still would say that it's system setting redesign and reorganisation is the biggest upgrade from the GH4
Agreed. The menu is now a lot better!
I would love to get a GH5, especially now that the 6DII is rumoured to not have 4k video, but the bad autofocus kills it for me :(
I need this camera in my life
The 10-bit example was unfortunately useless, UA-cam doesn't seem to process 10 bit color information so the gradient was about the same, if anything I think the 10 bit was a bit worse possibly due to compression on UA-cam's end.
No its definitely worth it. When I watch youtube on TV the banding of 8 bit codecs are very annoying. It doesnt happen with 10bit gh5 footage.
Are you using a 4K display? I'm looking at this at 4K right now, the grading is pretty bad for both, even worse on the 10-bit side. watch filmriot's review of the gh5 and fast forward to 7 min 50 seconds
I wasn't saying 10-bit was useless and that it doesn't make a difference, I was saying in this footage/example when watching it in 4K, UA-cam seems to have butchered the quality of it, while the 1080p playback seems to be just fine.
And here Im wandering what the fuck linus needs petabytes of storage?? As his videos doesn't looks half good as yours
How large are the files in V-Log in 10-bit?
Wow.. nice quality of a video.. what camera did you used to record this review?
In terms of recording video, sorry if I missed it, but does it record for the standard 29 min then stop or does it continue to make files once the time limit has been reached? Great video btw!!!
You have unlimited recording time :D either the battery runs out or you fill up both SD cards. On my G7, the files are broken up in 3+ GB while on the GH5 it's one single file.
HardwareCanucks Thank you very much 🤗🤗🤗
did you visit Bulgaria?
Thanks for best review
So if I choose 2fps and record video it is going to be time-lapse-like video like that in one file?
What was the vlog music?
Awesome video! Such a cool camera! I'm about to get one, but have never had an actual good camera before, and still don't really understand the lenses. Can you suggest a good type of lens for filming things close to the camera, like 8 inches away up to a few feet away? like for filming trading cards. one of the things i am going to use the camera for is to film unboxing videos, and trading card opening videos. Get the kit lens. Learn the kit lens. Only use the kit lens :) The new 12-60 is awesome, or if you want consistent aperture through the zoom, 12-35mm is great too.
Do you ever shoot in the 6k VIdeo?
It's a little tricky to use so i avoid it.
which lens do you use?
Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 + Metabones SB 0.71x
Panasonic 25mm F1.7
Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8
can someone tell me what was the music used in the first minute of the video.
Great.
Question: what cars do you use for your 400mbs 60fps on the gh5? Does it crush/stop reading?
This or a 2nd hand 5D mark II ?
5D2 is a Full Frame DSLR. Used it for good 3 years before switching to GH4. It's incredible for photography, and creative 1080p video because of that DOF with the right lenses. But for video in 2017, it's deff the GH5!
Thanks :)
loving my GH5 but waiting on the firmware updates that are coming!
Hello! I'm the beginner of taking video, what lens you recommend for GH5 ?
Good stuff thanks
use you proxies??? i can't editing in premiere 8 bits 4k in mark book pro 2015
Yup. I render 720p cineform proxies for the main edit and then just export using the master files. Can edit this way on a potato even.
Now I want this over the G85!
Is this good for live stream?
Given that you have the metabones adapter and the 18-35 sigma, what do you set the focal length for stabilization? Do you mind sharing the formula, if there is one? For example, is it lowest zoom setting (18) x2 xmetabones XL or UL value?
Thank you!
+Randy Rosca 18*2*0.71 ;) that's what I do.
Ah... I love HardwareCanucks so much.
gr8 work keep it up
Very Nice!!!
Dimitri - i am a content creator considering my first camera. Been using a Google pixel phone to shoot currently. Would the g7 be a decent upgrade, or what would your opinion be?
+Arcanum Luminarium yes, the Panasonic G7 would be an excellent camera to start.
Dmitri what are you doing in Bulgaria? Great review.
Can you share that awesome wallpaper with us? The red GH5 one you used for the thumbnail.
It's not a wallpaper haha. it's just one of my video shots full-screen ;p
HardwareCanucks oh I was wondering that! I guess I'll do the same and just screenshot it :P
G7 was epic. It's much lighter than the gh4 or gh5. Still use it for travel. Love it. Might get gh5 later
G7 IS epic :p still use it with the GH5 as my 2nd cam.
