absolute best (and cheapest card) you can get for the GH5 - amzn.to/2s8849U - this will handle 400mbps like a breeze. Purchased them when they were 100 each and now you can buy for 50 bucks!!
Anyone interested in the GH5, but is worried about the lack of great continuous AF, please know that there is a super awesome hack to make the AF twice as good. All it takes is a simple setting change (shutter speed) and it does wonders. There are several videos out there explaining exactly what to do. Check out Yeowda Yeo's video first as he was the genius that figured it out in the first place. Not an engineer at Panasonic. Hopefully Panasonic recognizes him for his discovery, but until then, give the dude props and credit well deserved.
The Panasonic gh series are also great for real estate photography. A friend of mine uses it for his real estate business. He shooted with other camera's but always got back to the gh series. Whole pictures are sharp not only parts. Even the GH 3 is great.
I just shot a music video with the gh5 and a bunch of shots where on a steady cam using auto focus. It performed perfectly. Couldn't be happier with the cameras performence. I'm not really sure why people are complaining. All we had to do was select our subject and shoot
Gotta say, I am absolutely uninterested in this camera. But your style is awesome and I couldn't stop watching the video. Admire your talent. Keep it going!
The videos at the end doesn't seem so bad at low light. Some light noise removal in Premiere, FCPX, etc can fix this too, wouldn't be perfect but it's also not a big deal. All other complaints can be updated in future firmware updates.
Excellent review. Best out there. /I don't have issues with the AF. I'll live pulling focus as I have for 20 years. Am I not a filmmaker now? :-) /Yes I do like AF sometimes for run and gun, but for narrative, commercial or considered work? No. /Am I the only one on earth not vlogging, or watching vlogs? Perhaps.
Wait for their new camera that they had covered at NAB. Looks like a S35 sensor in an AF100 type body. I want to get a gh5 but with my clients they are the type to question what I bring to shoot which sucks. I brought my Arri Amira to shoot a marvel commercial( just a talking head of agent Hill) and they questioned that. Same thing happened on an HBO 24/7 boxing shoot.
Just like the old days with still shooters and Hasselblad. Idiots that didn't know photography would insist on seeing a Hasselblad- like the camera did all the work. It reminds me of an old joke. A photographer is showing his work to a friend who proclaims, "Wow! These are great pictures! You must have a great camera!" A week later the photographer is having dinner at said friend's house. Upon leaving, he exclaims, "That was an amazing dinner. You must have a terrific oven!"
Was talking with a friend about something similar a couple weeks back, but with regards to photography....people question a small camera, but when you walk into a room with a Canon / Nikon full frame DSLR no one will question your gear.
Great review! Thank you for taking the time to put it together for us. Reviews like these help me try to make much more informed choices while researching new gear. Again, thank you. I will subscribe.
Leaving aside the fact of being masters or inept in using manual focus, the technology is so consolidated and tested with amazing results in an endless number of cameras. In this case, what I can think of is a not perfect process of product development and testing. In my opinion, after years of shooting videos in all conditions, there are situations I prefer to focus manually and others in which I prefer the camera do the job. In this case I have to care of one less thing and pay attention to the scene. But there is a good video by Gerald Undone that gives a lot of information on the AF and how to get better results from the GH5.
I found this to be a great and forthright review. I currently use the GH4 and despite the fact it is a great camera, I have problems with the way it handles continuous AF. I am planning to buy the GH5 and was hoping the AF performance on that was better, but based on reviews from people like Max, Photo.Joseph and many others, I think the AF problems are still there. Like you, I am hoping it can be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
In documentary film shoot situations where the subject is constantly on the move and beyond the scope of manual focus because of the time factor, autofocus inevitably gains importance for even the pro. Other exemplary features of a camera cannot replace the essential requirement of good effective autofocusing.
Great review Mr! Best one I've seen so far! The autofocus bit doesn't bother so much as I tend to use manual anyway, but a working autofocus one would be a welcomed addition. However my Gh4 is pretty bad in low light, so I was really hoping for an improvement there! Keep up the good work!
Some questions about the FOCUS PULL feature: - Does it work smoothly and well with Olympus 12-40/2.8 - Can you remote control it with the Panasonic app?
Hi, another beginner-learner's question. Should I purchase white and middle-grey cards in order to aid setting white balance before shooting? How does manual WB work on the GH5? Also, is it worth also getting a black card, as well as the white and middle-grey, and why? Anything else worth considering?
Supermandan yes a set of white balance cards are useful. Again, not familiar with avid, but most editors have a option to just click on the white color and set the balance in post. You can also use the cards to set custom white balances (up to 4 custom white balances) in addition to your pre-set ones. I personally don’t use white balance cards too much unless I’m shooting with a multi cam set up.
Yes. Even here it is clearly visible hunting, and micro-hunting of continuous video AF. Is it a deal breaker? Hmm, as Griffin Hammond, a Panasonic ambassador, recommends just forget about Continuous AF, switch it off, and you will be a 100% happy user of the GH5.
Do you like the a6500? I'm going to grab a GH5, but I also want to grab a Sony camera with a bigger sensor and better low light performance. I'm trying to decide if the extra money for the a7sii is worth it. I know the a6500 takes better stills, but it has more/smaller pixels so it's not quite as much of a low light beast as the a7sii. Have you had over heating problems or problems with battery life? I really like the images from the a6500 for the price. Both the video and the stills are beautiful. I'm trying to talk myself out of going with the a7sii. I don't really want to spend that much money on a second camera. Have you enjoyed using your a6500?
Breaking Elegance I know the a7rii is really killer for stills. I'm not much of a stills shooter though. Don't get me wrong, I like shooting stills, but it's just a hobby for me. Video is my bread and butter. I prefer the video features of the s line. To me it seems like the a6500 is the best of both worlds for less money though. I've been trying to find people who own it to get their opinion on it. I'm definitely leaning that way. I could afford the a7sii, but if I save the money I could get some nice glass instead. If I talk to a few a6500 owners who like it I'll be convinced.
Andrew Forbes my friend has the a7S2 and the A7R2 I personally only shoot video specifically for my UA-cam channel I barely ever shoot any Stills I still prefer the a7rII check out that1cameraguy' and Jason vong for good sony camera coverage those guys know everything sony
Thanks for the review, mate! Excellent work! Would love to hear your experience of how the camera handles low light conditions similar to that of a night club.
Good review! Slowly leaning towards this camera. Looking to shoot quality videos and photos. I do work in the video industry and understand resolutions, bit rates etc. I can maximize the cameras potential. 4K 60p is a killer feature to have. But All the talk about the auto focus issue does concern me. Hope a system update can partially fix this...
LOL, for a camera with a price tag of over 2K it is not too much to ask....kind of like the the same issue with the Canon 6D2, people expect it to have 15 stops of dynamic range...but yet the camera is a image beast in its own ways. It would not be an issue if you know how to expose properly.
Not all of us are. There are TONS of UA-camrs, vloggers that this camera fits sooooo perfectly with except for its unbelievable lack of AF reliability. There are sooo many other cheaper options with MUCH better AF, that this to me personally don't make any sense what so ever.
Hi there, a few more questions. 1. I'm hearing that the GH5 has V-log-L, or something like. Please explain. 2. What is a LUT? When to use it in conjunction with v-log? Etc., etc.. I have no idea. 3. I have Avid MC and so would be running the footage through this. Every online tutorial seems to reference Premier Pro. Do I need to take anything into consideration? Is colour grading still a standard operation using MC's colour grading tools? 4. How to convert IRE to another system, say, F-stops (I don't know if correct phrasing of question)? 5. Can you recommend a good user's forum for the GH5? As ever, thank you.
Supermandan np! I’ll do my best. 1. V-log is a dull picture profile that requires luts and color grading in your editing program. It cost 99 bucks in addition to the GH5. 2. A lut is a “look up table” it basically makes your footage look a certain way or a type of “style”. You use the lut to make your V-Log footage as desired. I think of luts almost like a filter in a sense. It gives your footage a unique look defined by the “look up table”. I have never used the avid editing program. I use Final Cut Pro. Lots of people have lived premiere for years!!! But now, look around, everyone is switching back to fcpx, it’s a one time 299 fee, but at least you don’t need to pay a monthly subscription like premiere. 4. I need to refresh myself on IRE... 5. DSLRShooter has a guide on the GH5, I think he may charge for it but probably worth his time.
1. If I buy V-log do the luts come with it, and will they run through Avid? 2. I have flexibility to grade however I want? My first job many years ago I was trained as a photographic colour grader, so while my 'style' doesn't have a name, I have a sense for what I like. 3. I will stick with Avid, as it remains the default film & TV software and it works for me. 4. Yeah, this IRE talk kinda numbed my brain. 5. Ok, thanks.
Supermandan lut don’t come with the v-log, but you can literally make your own a variety of ways. OR you can buy lut “packs” that include several luts made by other people who usually sell them for rather cheap. I normal lut pack can be 5-20 bucks.. I’m going to look into Avid! Never knew that was the standard! Maybe I should be using that! Ha!
JRESHOW Thank you. Avid has always been the standard NLE. All Oscar winners for editing have to date been Avid users. The learning curve is harder, yet worth it.
Panasonic GH5 with 12 to 60mm LIECA DG Lens Kit - Can you do a video with this setup only (Kit setup) with video samples and images. Planning to buy one?
Can anyone help? If you use one of your own custom settings, and yet in the moment you need to change one variable, then: a) can you do this?, and b) when you later return to that one custom setting, will it revert to all of your original choices? In other words, is there flexibility in the moment, while later stability to always return to something you have pre-arranged?
Supermandan good question. You can move to one of your pre-set custom settings. Once there it will be set to what you set it at prior. You can adjust anything you want freely. When you got out of that custom setting and back in, it will go back to the original settings you have it set to. So yes, you have flexibility in the moment, while later when you go back it will be your original settings. Hope that made sense
Things that stood out for me most: There were scenes, particularly of the toddler on the playground where the camera was simply never in focus. I'm assuming auto focus was used there, but it never focused on any part of the scene. The image stablisation caused moving objects to ghost in and out of existence. A bird ran into the scene, turned, and instead of running away, just faded into nothingness (10:55). Also multiple times between 11:00 and 11:30, traffic moving along the road jolted from spot to spot, more like watching a time lapse than a video. Granted this was not the focus of the scene, but if you're shooting wildlife and background items are appearing and disappearing, teleporting from one location to the next.. not a good look.
Neat video! Is there a way to lock the shutter speed in movie mode eg at 1/50th for filming at 25fps. So that no fiddling or big clumsy fingers can accidentally switch it to 1/40th or 1/60th ! Thanks
Slashkird I need to record inside of a movie theater and get people's reactions to a video. I know the low light of the GH5 is garbage compared to the Sony- but I can't have any lights on the camera which means I need to have it placed before anyone arrives..so non stop recording for at least 1.2 hours. Any suggestions?
Do you think it's important to get a metabone speed booster or it's fine to get native four third lenses instead?, as a speed booster is about $600 which could get about 2 different four third lenses for the GH5.
hey, are there any thoughts on making photos with this body? how fast you can swap to photo mode from video? would it keep the setti g that you ise in your current video shot or it changes like sony does? thanks!
I used-to-have an FZ2000, but I don't remember if it had the automated focus transitioning function as you explained here. I think the GH5 is an excellent Filmmaking camera for educated film/movie makers; but, definitely, I wouldn't recommend it for "soccer-moms" videography because of the hunting video AF issues. It's an excellent camera in the hands of experienced videographers, but could be terribly frustrating in the hands who have no experience what is the proper shooting/acquisition workflow with the GH5. On the other hand, the brilliantly reliable continuous video AF on Canon DPAF/Sony PDAF cameras could be totally useless in the hands of a user who has no clue how to use it. I watched a video today taken with the excellent Canon M6, and the focus was out for long passages, since the operator forgot to tap the proper place on the screen, and he was blind or whatever so that he didn't see that the main character is totally out of focus. Anyhow, the way G. Hammond recommends to use the GH5 is absolutely excellent, and we will not be disappointed that way; this is the only way to shoot with large sensor contrast detect video cameras; no firmware is going to fix that.
Hey great review! I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your Premiere Pro Export settings. Your video shows almost no obvious compression. I've been struggling for a while now with mine. My footage always looks way worse when uploaded to UA-cam and shows tons of artifacts/distortion. I've tried every setting possible and no changes. I do h264 and I've tried everything from 12mbps to 50mbps with no change. Thanks for the future help!
absolute best (and cheapest card) you can get for the GH5 - amzn.to/2s8849U - this will handle 400mbps like a breeze. Purchased them when they were 100 each and now you can buy for 50 bucks!!

I'm a little late to the party but, great review. Kept me interested the entire time. Really like what I see from this camera.
The best review I've seen so far. You really stand off the crowd with the commentary and the epic shots.
Gotta say, I am absolutely uninterested in this camera. But your style is awesome and I couldn't stop watching the video. Admire your talent. Keep it going!

For what I use it for the af works well
Oval Banger Videos AND there is a update coming later this month that says it has improved auto continuous focus!!! Hopefully they got it right :))
JRESHOW yes looking forward to the update. Your video is spot on! Thanks for uploading.
Very informative video on the GH5’s features.
Great review, love the clips and music combo........ Glad to see there is more to this camera than the dreaded auto focus....
Sam Hawk thank you! There is.
Awesome review, really love the timecodes in the description along with tons and tons of sample footage instead of talking heads.
Really nice review! Easy to follow and exellent tempo on the audio/voice.
This is the most helpful video about GH5 that I've seen. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent review. Best out there.

Don't you need a good AF if you are running it on a glidecam or gimbal , what would you do in those situations?
I vlog and I still would keep it on manual focus and just use the touchscreen to focus
Great review and one of the most in-depth I've seen to date...thank you.
Awesome and an excellent review. Probably, one of the best that I have seen.
Thanks! Still rocking 3 of them till this day! Probably won’t upgrade until I see the phase detect auto focus system in Panasonics micro 4/3rds.

this camera looks so good!!!
Thank you for this review. After my 70D stopped working... I am metaphorically drooling right now.

Super report. I'll look forward to your next one after a firmware update, but it's an awesome camera. Thank you.

excellent. I'll be maxing out one of my credit cards soon...because of you.
M St lol been there.. a few times 😎
One of the best review. Nice style!
Umberto Pini :)
Quality video mate :-)
Really enjoyed this. Must have taken quite a bit of time to pull together. Thank you.

somebody had gone deep into this. good review!
still use my panasonic GX85 and LOVE IT
Thank you man you're professional
Thanks, this is a very useful video. I'm pretty sure now I'm going to replace my excellent GH3 with this astounding camera.
The link for the camera cage isn't working, would you mind typing out the name of of the cage?
Some questions about the FOCUS PULL feature:
- Does it work smoothly and well with Olympus 12-40/2.8
- Can you remote control it with the Panasonic app?
thank you for the work you have done. I found it very informative.
Really enjoy watching this review. Thank you so much!
Hi, I assume you had a gimbal when shooting (12:47 mins) at the waterfalls?
was that music at the start also in Kerbal Space Program?I just got a massive flash back!
gordonhogan haha it's a song by Kevin McLeod :)
LOL. but anyone who played Kerbal knows that tune far too well.

I don't even care about auto focus personally. You don't want to use it if you're a film maker for the most part.
Nicholas Reif but what if you could ;)
But then there's THAT crucial part where it could be really useful ;)
H.256 is a pain. It doesnt open on Final Cut Pro X. But it only opens on Premiere Pro for me :/
EightOfSupreme stop using pirated versions
Awesome review!! Thank you!!

Great video... very neat... clean and clear! I really appreciated it.
I hesitate with SONY ALPHA 7s - II... you kind of helped me choose.
I like Gh5. Nice video!
Great review.

wait ... 6:59 that is the old version ? 14-140mm f4-5,8 Right ? So it can't do Dual IS ...... Right ?
Panasonic GH5 with 12 to 60mm LIECA DG Lens Kit - Can you do a video with this setup only (Kit setup) with video samples and images. Planning to buy one?

Awesome review! By the way: where did they announce that they bring 4k60p 10 bit to the internal recording? I can't find that anywhere...
Peter van der Ham it's not true. I misunderstood. Sorry for the confusion
Dude you've got a ton of money into video equipment! Holy smokes is the quality good tho. Thanks for the very well done informative video bro.
3cheers thanks man!
Thank you
your version of the 14-140 doesn't support dual IS.
KikujiroChan no? Why is that? The lens itself has stabilization and the gh5, so why not?
as we can see there was an autofocus issues on this video, what can you say about it ?
Things that stood out for me most:
There were scenes, particularly of the toddler on the playground where the camera was simply never in focus.
Granted this was not the focus of the scene, but if you're shooting wildlife and background items are appearing and disappearing, teleporting from one location to the next.. not a good look.
at 14:36 I see aliasing, is that a problem with the camera?
I’m actually confused. Why do you need a gimble if gh5 has it built in? If you’re using gimble then isn’t the gh5 stabilisation redundant?
thank you so much for the review !!
Should I get a Sony A7S II??
Very usefull and well done thx
Your B-roll locations look familiar. did you shoot it in Davenport, Iowa? I'm based in Des Moines and shoot weddings on a GH4 :)
Davis Evans yep! Davenport, Buffalo, Bluegrass, all over the QC! Small world!
Neat video!
Is there a way to lock the shutter speed in movie mode eg at 1/50th for filming at 25fps.
So that no fiddling or big clumsy fingers can accidentally switch it to 1/40th or 1/60th !
Thanks
barandcross good question, and I'm not sure, but I don't believe so.
If you use shutter angle instead of shutter speed I think that would do it.
barandcross good point! I just checked and you can indeed set the dials and wheels to something else besides shutter ISO etc. lots of options
cool ! congratulations ! You have left the sensor stabilization ?
Amazing demo.thanks.question gh5 or sony a7s11
Slashkird I need to record inside of a movie theater and get people's reactions to a video. I know the low light of the GH5 is garbage compared to the Sony- but I can't have any lights on the camera which means I need to have it placed before anyone arrives..so non stop recording for at least 1.2 hours. Any suggestions?
I really don't want to have to rent a Sony but would it even record for 1.2 hours?
KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM .... NOICE!
Is that flickering during the stabilization shots from UA-cam, or is it in your originals too?
Is the dynamic range in 8 bit better or worse then the GH4? I am hearing it possibly has worse dynamic range?
Do you think it's important to get a metabone speed booster or it's fine to get native four third lenses instead?, as a speed booster is about $600 which could get about 2 different four third lenses for the GH5.
Marthins Harrison I've never used a speed booster. I know a lot of people do though.
JRESHOW alright then, so u think it's fine to get four third lenses instead. Yes?
Marthins Harrison that is what I use. Yes.
What's the name of the music playing in the very beginning?
Did they ever fix the focus issues?
John Healey they released a update. Still not up to par unfortunately.
JRESHOW on par with Sony? Ive got a rx100v and it focuses super fast but has so many other drawbacks
Amazing video
hey, are there any thoughts on making photos with this body? how fast you can swap to photo mode from video? would it keep the setti g that you ise in your current video shot or it changes like sony does? thanks!
so how do you focus then
With the focus wheel on the lens?
YES
Hey great review! I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your Premiere Pro Export settings. Your video shows almost no obvious compression. I've been struggling for a while now with mine. My footage always looks way worse when uploaded to UA-cam and shows tons of artifacts/distortion. I've tried every setting possible and no changes. I do h264 and I've tried everything from 12mbps to 50mbps with no change. Thanks for the future help!
Best and most unbiased review of the gh5 I've seen yet. 👍😇
