  • The second part to my guide on to removing the Air Induction System from your Yamaha Dragstar XVS650A Classic - Can be applied to other versions of this bike.
    First part is here - • Yamaha Dragstar 650 - ...
    The Air Induction System (AIS) is an emissions control unit to pump air into the exhaust, in order to burn off un-used fuel. The unit itself actually increases fuel consumption and raises the running temperature of the engine and exhaust (creating the blueing that you may see in older bikes). This is neither good for the engine or for the environment, as its a bodge job to get round certain states and countries emissions laws for import. You can disable it but in the UK its fine to remove it, as it will still pass the MOT.
    The Gun shells that I used were .45 ACP gun shells, available from various on-line sources...
    If you undertake this job I advise that you use a skilled mechanic and can not be held responsible for any negative consequences.

    Great video exactly what I was looking for. The .45 ACP (American Colt Pistol) brass cases are just the thing for blocking up the holes in the alloy.

    Thanks for the video. I followed your trick at 7:00 about removing the spigot and it worked!

    I tell ya I loved your video of how too... I just tackled my vstar today after watching your video last night. Every thing came out fine....except the rear cylinder tube. I ended up using a harbor freight strut compressor. It has a hook on it perfect for getting around the tube. I put vise grips on the other end and started hammering. After about an hour I finally got it! My lord that one was in there good. I really do appreciate you doing this video I just had to tell ya how it went...take care.

    Although it's been a year since you posted this, I just happened to stumble upon it!
    I had been meaning to do this on mine, and thought it would be difficult to do! Based on your video it's a piece of cake!
    Thanks!

      Well I did the research years ago and did the same on my previous dragstar... When I got this bike I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do a proper video on my research, as no one else seems to have done one!

      I had found another vid where the guy mentioned that the AIS is not needed when changing over to straight pipes..., which is what I have on now!
      I now gotta find the time, and courage, to take on the job...! Thanks for your reply.

    I'm actually gonna update this because I just removed mine. You know how you used that bar to tap out the front piece? I used a spanner to do the same thing to both of them. My bike is a 1998 so they were pretty rusted but nothing a hammer couldn't fix.

    i run mine on castrol magnetech oil for cars it did make the clutch slip under full load so now it has ebc clutch springs, good old bike

  • @Gothtecdotcom
    @Gothtecdotcom  11 років тому

    Oil for cars tends to have an additive that creates clutch slip on bikes, unless you use a low grade mineral.. Dragstars suffer from clutch slip anyway, so it increases the problem, uprating the springs actually doesn't make as much difference than just changing the oil, although you may have to change the plates as well due to the car oil!

    some have use car oil with no probs in my opinion its better oil than motorcycle oil hence the clutch is more likely to slip with it' as long as the cluch don,t slip i think its ok to use' im a big fan of the xvs by the way think i saw you at chatsworth haha

    Thanks for the reference to del and penny's ride, he's got a lot of great vids, thanks mate, is he within distance that you can go riding with him? He rat bike is awesome, I had a Suzuki gs1000g I bought new in 1980. It was a lot of fun, now I ride a pan European st1300 police bike, bought it from California Highway Patrol. I know this doesn't pertain to the video but I am using g a table and can't figure out how to send you a message other than posting on your video, I enjoy your video a lot

    I was watching worrying that you'd hammer the shell too far so it falls in the hole out of sight. Or is that even possible?
    Will be getting a Dragstar soon just after I've sold my virago! Useful vid thanks

      Thankyou :)
      Thats actually hard to do, the shell is a perfect fit and the worst you could do is hammer it flush...

      Oh fair enough. Looking at 650s on EBay and a lot already have the ais removed. Doesn't really do anything useful. First thing I'm going to do is fit some v&h cruzers!

    2013 650 . The 45 apc does not work . More backfiring after removal . Does seem to run a lil better

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  3 роки тому

      Yeah you need to block all the holes, or air will leak in causing backfire...tray something that will fit, with exhaust paste, and get back to us with the answer :)

    Does this stop exhaust popping when decelerating? I have an V&H longshot exhaust and hypercharger

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  3 роки тому +1

      That popping is fuel burning in the exhaust, removing the AIS means not enough air for this to happen, so should do...

    Can you help to figure out. My 03 1100cc got backfiring , rear cylinder won’t have fire on system so exhaust got no heat. Only running front cylinder. I clean carb, replaced spark coil and plug, adjust air fuel plug, still can’t find real problem. Thanks

      My first thought is Reg/rec, bad earth style, but I do have the haynes book of lies on this bike, I will have to dig it out!

    • @Gothtecdotcom

      Had a look, it is either Red/rec or low compression, do a compression test...

    did you have a problem with the .45 ACP shell casings coming out 8 months later?

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  9 років тому

      Calvin Leblanc No, but thats why I also used exhaust paste, just in case... Not that it matters as it doesn't affect the engine, just a lot louder, and cheap to replace.

    • @robertking7150
      @robertking7150 8 років тому +1

      +Gothtecdotcom Might be a good idea to put some inside too to make sure that primer doesn't pop out.

    I removed the AIS of my Yamaha V-Star 650 put the two 45 caliber bullet shells in but now when I hit the throttle I hear lots of popping noise out of the exhaust help please.

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  6 років тому +1

      Pop you spark plugs out, see what colour that are, sounds like your running a little rich or sparking is bad or timing is out... The AIS would have, sort of hidden, that symptom... Because the popping is fuel ignition in the exhaust, the AIS actually caused that by adding air to the exhaust gases... So if there is a problem, by removing it, you now know there is a problem and can fix it...

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  6 років тому +1

      Or it could be a tiny leak in the shell casing fitting - .45 APC shells... You could see if this is the case by smearing some exhaust paste around the top of the casings, not a cure, but would point to the problem

    I don't suppose you have any spare .45 acps cases left over that you wouldn't mind selling?

    Hi , I just removed nearly all parts but I am stuck when trying to remove the 90 degrees tubes connected with the cylinder head they seem stuck , can you suggest how can I get them out please?

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  6 років тому

      The ones I show you how to remove in this video? They are push fit, do corrode, and if in doubt, a slide hammer is your friend... I didn't have a slide hammer, so had to improvise...
      This is if your talking about the elbows that go into the engine itself..

    Have taken the pump out but don't want to pull all the tubing until I see if there is a real difference - instead of looping the rubber tubing between the two chrome pipes would it work to plug each pipe with an empty .45 shell?

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  9 років тому

      blackacre1066 Plug the rubber hoses, between the pump and the metal pipe on the left side of the engine, with marbles...

    • @blackacre1066
      @blackacre1066 9 років тому

      ***** dont' have marbles but plenty of .45s They seem to plug the rubber hose nicely that's why I wondered. Pump is already off the bike

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  9 років тому

      The chances are that a few dozen miles down the road the rubber pipe may burn through, it'll then sound awesome, but will annoy the neighbours. Before then you'll be able to hear if you like the sound or not.

    • @blackacre1066
      @blackacre1066 9 років тому

      ***** HardKrome Straights - neighbors already annoyed! Your videos are great - thank you. Just for my education - would the rubber tubes burn through if you did the rubber tube loop from one pipe to another or with the blocking of the tubes with marbles?

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  9 років тому

      burn through on both
