So glad to see this, albeit three months tardy. I have recently been in touch with a new "reverberator" customer of mine. We started talking about alt-tuning harps. I told him about the PentaHarp and how I love it for various genres, ie jazz/blues, swing, funk, reggae and bossa nova. He mentioned a review you had done and I thought he meant your first, over-caffeinated review of the PH. I am just now seeing this new review and discussion. I am with you re: how it can help one develop more licks on the Richter layout harps. It's nice to be able to get tongue-blocked octaves end to end on the PH, too. I Really love the PH!!! I wish Hohner would make them available in all twelve keys, plus Low E. Thanks for making this clip. Peace out. 😊
This harp and harmonic minor tuning helped my melody playing, soloing creativity and getting outta the blues "box". As a harp nerd...I love all the variety.... the Adlers kick ass
The word you’re looking for my friend is permutations. I would have to do the math on 6 notes but with 4 note if you play each note once you have 24 possible permutations you can play. Permutations are a great tool.
so cool, love my Pentaharps and Lee Oskar special tunings as you know - sorry for my absence - super busy with life things but always with you - loving that you moved - luvNhugs to both 😎🙏
That’s a real smart take on the penta harp! First time I see it as an interesting or useful instrument. Similar to what happened to me, being a bass player, when I started learning the mandolin, which has an inverted tuning: it’s a mind expander. By the way: congratulations for your new house!
I use Pentaharp as some kind of bending machine on draw notes. Great for microtones and improvised stuff. But for Blues and other things, major diatonic is still a king...
Good stuff! it's just your passion for the harp why your so pumped I think.. what I love about your vids is that your giving us the stuff needed to play/feel OUR OWN style. Ez duz it
11:11 minutes in "wow, i'm smarter than i thought... barely" 🤣... j, you're crackin me up! The end credits sound like a mix of too much coffee and too much helium from the birthday balloon. Haha... anyway, always love love love your content, and enjoy watching your vids. THANK YOU!!! Stay groovy, brother! 👍👍
When they first came out, Will Wilde said that he didn't like it because that not having the bends in the same way meant you lose expression. So, I guess that it's easy to be kind of functional on it or even just to blow into the thing. 🤔😉
Playing 10th position (root on one draw) leads on the penta harp to a blues scale that is completely drawn. With the minor seventh on four double bend😀
10th position on Pentaharp is the best sounds position on this harp. I'm using this harmonica almost only on this position. Very blues rock style of playing, very guitar style.
I have several alternate tunings, including a Pentaharp. So far, I can only use each one in a single position - unlike what I’ve learned on the richter. This video is right on time, I just pulled out my Pentaharp a couple days ago to give it another chance. So far I’m only using it in 10th (I think - mostly draw notes with bends). Now I need a video on concert tuning and what to do with a Trochilus richter/chromatic.😊
i gotta be honest, i don't like them, really don't like them. i got one when they first came out as an absolute beginner and quickly regretted it. i am a huge fan of the diatonic Richter tuning and their ability to play chords, old school country blues harp is where it's at for i so personally i think Hohner dropped a bollock with the pentaharp. it's great for a guitarist maybe but as You said, with a harmonicat each note just sounds better on a Richter tuned diatonic. here's another bollock i reckon Hohner dropped, phasing out the puck. instead they should have made them full size and released them in all keys. the cover design makes for extremely easy maintenance but again i began carrying one in the pocket for a time as an absolute beginner and it messed up i embouchure because it was too easy to get a clear tone with such a small harp allowing us to get more in the mouth so that when i went back after a couple of weeks to a full size the tone was horrible. so as a complete beginner i ended up putting that one down again as well. the pentaharp, i ended up getting a keyboard for ear training to find the bent notes, that being what i thought the pentaharp would do for i. nowadays i actually prefer Seydel and their stainless reeds, they sound incredible for i mind i struggle to get a poor tone out of them. maybe as i become more practiced with harmonica this will change but these days i never play the Hohners anymore because i am now too used to the larger gaps between the holes on the Seydels! it's like having to relearn the space between say, hole two and hole four whenever i try to go from one manufacturer to the other.
They're a marketing gimmick for people who can't bend notes and really don't want to put the effort in. Jason is paid to make this video. So much for free Friday eh.
@@JohnVieto yh i was wondering about that but then having said that i still fully appreciate and am ever Thank full for all that Jason shares with us. as long as there is money then none of us are free, money is theft, but of course in the meantime...
The first thing in the video I write is: "You don't even need this harp to learn this lesson" ! Did you watch the lesson/ video? There's 30 minutes of talk almost on scale exercises , the pentaharp only comes in to play as a tool for visualization so you can move those scale exercises to any harmonica of ANY brand. This lesson and all the others are FREE to you regardless of any revenue I bring in via Google (Hohner doesn't pay me but I get harps). Watch the Golden Melody review if you believe I've sold out. ❤️
@@jasonricci i did watch it Brother and those points were not lost on i, that why in the reply i gave to the other fella here is along the lines of "it did occur to i" however i didn't make that part of i comment. the original comment i made is just the experience i have had with the pentaharp as a complete beginner, i feel it is either best for musicians with no ambition to learn the harp or for harmonicats who already know their way around the Richter tuning. speaking of that i prefer the pre war tuning and do have a couple of Hohners customised to that tuning. i am also very conscious of the times when You have made it clear that your lessons are not really aimed at beginners. having said all that Brother i appreciate both your music and the knowledge You often share here with us through your "free Fridays" and other videos. that spirit of sharing, that's what Life is really all about and so i Love You for it i Brother. as always, Thank You and best wishes. ❤️
Did I see you play with John Primer at the Linda in Albany NY a couple years back? Man you do it! These Pentaharps just went on sale for $37.00. I am about to dip a toe in the water. Hope there are no snakes. Be Well Chris
I have only been playing diatonic harp for about 14 months. I already have 7, in 5 different keys. I think I need to master 2nd position before I buy another, especially with a different layout.
Moon Cat!! I think they should have called this a training harp. Would have made more sense right ? Anywho when my grandkids are ready i may start them off with that harp. But got to start them with the Kazoo and the jaw harp first. Austin- 1:1. Great food for thought.... ALL HAIL FREE FRIDAY !!! Austin 3:17 🌛🐱!!!
Jason have you tried the Wilde tuning or the powerbender or power draw? Curious what you think about them. Being an overblow player they probably aren’t your thing but I’m curious because I respect you.
I'm not much into altered tuned Harmonicas. It's not that I'm against them or even really because I'm an overblower I just don't like memorizing a new lay out 😆
Never heard of the penta harp, very cool, Would you still think of it as cross harp or If you are playing blues in G would you need a G penta harp? thanks

Really not sure if it’s just too advance for me to understand. But question …: if it’s so fantastic why isn’t more popular?
It's a learning too to me.
