  • Guitar players love it, and harmonica players hate it. The Hohner PentaHarp is the perfect harmonica for guitarists. Nashville musicians Payton Taylor and TJ Watson describe why this instrument quickly and easily unlocks harp playing for guitarists:
    1. No wrong notes!
    2. Play a useful scale without learning advanced techniques
    3. Intuitive note layout
    4. Play in the Box!

    Excellent harp! I will use it many ways, but mostly sitting down. I love soloing over jazz/blues, funk and bossa nova blues. The PH is great for fluid soloing. I have played for 50+ years, am an overbend player. I play original jazz/blues piano too, so I am looking forward to playing the PH with a neck rack when on keys. As the PH is not so chord-useful, piano, which can make all chords, seems a natural partner for the PH.

    If the group is playing a song, say in G, which one of these penataharps would you grab, The G minor?

      If the tune is in Gm, yes, use the Gm Pentaharp. If the tune is in Bb major, you may use the Gm Pentaharp for it, too.

    I haven't tried this harp, but this seems to make sense. I wonder how the cording works. I would try it, but Richter makes sense in my brain.

      They sound like tense theme music for Mission Impossible when played alternately, in/out. The PH is a super single note harp plus it allows for octave splits top to bottom. It is very different than the Richter tuning in note layout and how the breath patterns work.

    So which one to buy for playing with guitar in E?

    So Hohner is bragging that 'harmonica players hate it' like that's a plus (and not a slap in the face)?

      It isn't aimed at harmonica players. And why say "bragging"? It seems Hohner Bashing remains a popular pastime among harmonica players...

      @@stevebakerbluesharp Why should an instrument be 'aimed at' anyone. A quality instrument should be equally accessible to everyone. As for 'Hohner bashing', if a large segment of the clientele are unimpressed with what a company offers, that's hardly the clientele's fault. Also, if the harp is 'aimed at' guitarists, isn't that telling them "You need a special harp because you're too simple to handle a proper one"? I have to wander why you're so eager to jump to this company's defense.

      @@RayOBannon I've worked as a consultant to the Hohner company for 35 years, though I had little to do with the development of this model. Your claim that a quality instrument should be equally accessible to everyone makes little sense to me. I wouldn't get very far with a Stradivarius. It also seems weird to suggest this is in some way not a quality instrument, why exactly?
      All products have a target group, that's in the nature of commerce. I got 2 PentaHarps to test and have had fun exploring the possibilities the tuning offers, though I doubt if I'll be using it in my music, because I don't need it to play the things I want to play. Having spent a lot of time teaching beginners, though, I reckon an instrument like this may appeal to some of those who are frustrated with learning to bend notes. Like the guitarists in the video above. And if they enjoy playing it, where's the problem?

      @@stevebakerbluesharp Yeah, what's wrong with misleading folks who can't distinguish a real instrument from a cheap gimmick? And it doesn't hurt to have paid endorsers join the conversation, does it? It's not the harp I hate, it's your bullshit.

    The harp that makes any good player sound bad.

  • @RorytheRoman
    @RorytheRoman 2 роки тому +1

    This harp is garbage, the reason the harmonica sounds so bluesy is because you have to bend to get the pentatonic scale, this harp removes all emotion from the instrument. It makes playing blues so easy to point it sounds like a gimmick, also what happens when you want to play major? Or want to play in another key?

    • @stevebakerbluesharp
      @stevebakerbluesharp 2 роки тому +4

      The guitar players who tried it didn't think it was garbage. It won't sound the same as a standard harp because it's designed to be played by people who don't know how to bend notes, but what's wrong with that? It works great in major pentatonic too.
