As Drew was kind of saying towards the end of the video, Meridia isnt completely consistent or genuine about her beliefs. You could probably suggest that Meridia only wants the temple fixed and Malkoran gone, and in return you get an artifact that still preaches Meridia's ideals.
for a Prince she is amazingly human (her emotions at least). It seems like she is held up on high only to resent the role she plays. When she chooses she "acts out" in a way choosing to seek out power for herself. The contradictory nature of her actions seem very much like the struggle of good and evil inside us all.
I mean, most princes have terrifyingly human emotions, from egotistical pride to vanity, to hatred and insecurity, debauchery and even madness. Aadreas are spirits that at least model what we think of god and gods and organized religion in the west. Daedra are more like how the indian gods are portrayed in works like the Mahabharata, like what would happen if human-like spirits had god-like powers.
From what we do know about her character and behaviour she does seem to have at least some passing affection for mortals *but* only so far as they are actively venerating her in return. In a weird way she reminds me of Morgoth from LotR, participating in a noble cause (for a bit anyway) but ultimately thinks it should all be about them. With Morgoth this was his adding discord to Iluvatar's harmonious creation, with Meridia however it is a bit weirder. She seems very proactive for a daughter of Magnus, lending her boons out to the mortals she takes a shine to only to send them off to a new mortal later, probably when the prayers grow quiet. It could be she was rather naive in siding with the Ayleids, seeing only the wondrous creations and not the lifeless hands that actually laboured on them, or it might be she cares only for those who will actively flatter her ego, which the Nedes likely had little intention of doing considering the atrocities the Ayleids inflicted on them. Very interesting to have a fickle and melodramatic Goddess of Light instead of the usual militantly benevolent type.
Technically Dawnbreaker and Chillrend are contesting as my favorites lol but Dawnbreaker wins in appearance for Vanilla Skyrim. However with mods, Chillrend is definitely the top

Funny how dawnbreaker (and silver weapons for that matter) don’t burn vampires that touch them. My werewolf Redguard warrior gave a powerful silver nodachi to Lydia. You know, as a contingency.
Weird story - I always download the mod to kill Serana, because that's what a vampire hunter would do if they find a vampire in a tomb. Then go hunt down her entire wretched family and slay them, too. 8 million, six hundred and ten.
The Aedra are Gods that gave up their powers to the creation of Mundus The Daedra are Gods that are interacting with Mundus despite not helping in it's creation Some Daedra are evil, some are not, Daedra is just a term for Gods that did not participate in Lorkhan's plans Meridia is a Daedra, whether or not she is Good or Evil.
There's really not much difference between the two. Also the Aedra lost most of their power when they were doing all that creation nonsense, so if Meridia were to be a true Aedra she wouldn't the powerful looming prince of life and light we know her as. Moral of the story, Meridia cool, Aedra lame.
@@gamer1X12 So Meridia is basically just like an 'Aedra' who decided that they still needed their powers to carry out their work on Nirn, which makes it so that they can more directly intervene while actually being more similar to them in resemblances than most of the Daedra.
@@novicedruid8303 Yes basically. Meridia was kicked out of the Aedric realms for unknown reasons, but carved out her own realm anyway rather than try to get back in. Because she didnt expend herself during creation she still has the full extent of her power, making her basically identical to the Daedra. Like I said there isnt truly much difference between Aedra and Daedra other than motivations--those who wanted to help make the world and those who didnt. Its a rather loose and vague classification, which I think is a nice world building moment. It enhances the mystery of their existence
Of course Meridia loving life, and her support of the Ayleids can be reconciled: The Ayleids were strong, and life is survival of the fittest. And until their defeat, the Ayleids were the fittest. Life is not only sweet, but also bitter. Meridia, as an Aedra/Daedra, would have to embody that duality.
My theory : Being originally a Magna-Ge, she fled from the newly created Mundus when she understood she would lose her immortality and her power, so she might share the Aldmers' hate for Lorkhan, so that might explain why she chose to support the Ayleids against the Nedic slaves, given that Men were originally the followers of Lorkhan.
You know, Pelinal wasn't guiltless of barbarous butchery himself. And why would Meridia not back the Ayleids, considering she was one of their patron deities, if not the chief of their pantheon? And that's not to mention that Molag Bal's Ayleid worshippers were constantly terrorizing Meridia's devotees, until Meridia finally put an end to it herself by destroying the central city of Molag Bal worship. And her being pissed and getting vengeance on yhe Divines by sending Umaril back into world... well... wouldn't you do the same? The Divines brought Pelinal practically out of nowhere, sent him into Ayleid territory to butcher any and all Ayleids he came across, whether or not they were good or peaceful, and slaughtered their king, Meridia's champion. So why would she not be pissed and try to take vengeance upon the Divines for their actions? After all, they hadn't themselves shown any interest in humanity's plight up until then, whereas Meridia was also worshipped by man outside Cyrodiil, like her temple in Skyrim.
@@Kainlarsen My point was to draw attention to the fact that Meridia isn't the only Elder Scrolls deity who can be blamed for the kinds of things she is. Even within the Anuad it's stated that, because they're the result of the mingled blood of both Anu and Padomay, the Aedra (the Divines) are capable of great good as well as great evil, respectively. And the Divines are proven to be just as petty as the Daedra from time to time, and their worshippers guilty of equal atrocities. Interestingly, however, Magnus and the Magna-Ge are said in the Anuad to be purely Anuic beings. So one wonders, then, if Meridia isn't likewise actually _more_ good and beneficent than the Divines themselves. Of course, that would depend on one's own interpretation of her actions. And we the players are not entirely without bias, as we're constantly forced by the games to side with the Divines and interpret things exclusively through the lense of the their devotees (e.g., the _Knights of the Nine_ DLC).
Helps a race oppress another greatly, acts surprised when they rise and get revenge, sends a half daedra overlord to kill the divines as well as restore ayleid rule while supplying him with an army. Its almost like the ayleids deserved to get destroyed as well as meridia's "Champion" killed. Twice. Meridia doesnt have a right to act on who rules. The divines do, they made mundus. Also molag is apart of their revered pantheon. Speaks volumes.
@@ktc1875 Auriel, Trinimac, Ebonarm, Shor, Kyne, etc. have all done much the same. None are guiltless. And Meridia had a part in creating Mundus as a Magna-Ge. True, she and her father siblings left before seeing it through, but they took part. So she actually does have a right to lay some claim to Mundus. And as I mentioned above, just because she and Molag Bal both were worshipped by the Ayleids doesn't mean they have anything to do with one another. She and Molag Bal are vehement enemies, and as far as we know no Ayleid worshipped both. It does appear to have been an either/or situation. Perhaps most of the atrocities perpetrated by the Ayleids can be attributed to those who were Molag Bal and Mehrunes Dagon worshippers. That's just a guess, but it would make sense.
You are probably correct. The Daedra and Aedra do tend to play favorites. Meridia is more likely to associate with humans if they were to seek her out more regularly. It would not be surprising if she envied the worship of Talos, even if his status as one of the divines is rather questionable, then again, I question whether or not Stendarr should be one of the divines.
When my char touches the statue of Meridia, a message comes along "Meridia doesn't accept those who have not aided her" (or very close to that) but that might be the 'Faiths of Skyrim" religion mod maybe? It backs up your point also that the info provided exiting the Helgen caves at the start for this mod states that high elves and those using restoration are most worthy of Meridia's boon. It seems to me that she might be mainly aligned to the elves, and those that work to win her approval. Interesting stuff.
"I always thought it is a cold light, remote and far away." -Kili, The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug. I think that sums up Meridia pretty well. Beautiful, but distant and cold. Proclaiming warmth and beauty, but being unable to see how distant she actually is from the world she shines on.
Meridia is the crulest dedric lord, no other deadra can inflict suffering near that of her unending voice echoing through your head. Great video your work always inspires me to learn more about the lore !
Meridia: A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON... Dovahkiin: Nope. *closes chest, runs away.* Meridia: BUT MY TEMPLE. YOU MUST HELP ME... Dovahkiin: Not my problem. Baaaai.
If I knew how I'd make a mod mace that used the beacon as its head. "A FACE TOUCHES THE BEA, A NEW FA, A NEW FACE, A NE, A NEW FACE TOUCHES THE BEACON!"
She has dialogue that says, "look at my temple! Lying in ruins, so much for the consistantcy of mortals! Their hearts and their crafts. If they love me not, how can my love reach them?" Also, she probably hates the undead out of love.
The5armdamput33 Life is a never ending cyclical energy, she protects it as it is part of her sphere, same as why she hates the undead, it interrupts the cycle b
@@BranBal She hates the undead because they are created from corrupted life energy. She herself is made of pure life energy and apparently when you use necromancy to create undead beings, you're tapping into HER power and corrupting it, perverting her sphere of life. She's abt the sacredness of life and sees that her energies go untainted. "Meridia despises the undead and any who have tampered with *her* life-giving energies"
Also one thing, not being Captain "save a daedra": It is possible that Meridia was Cheated out of her Deal with Ayleids, and like Clavicus with Umbra, The Ayleids stole half of her powers to empower Umaril and Take control of her Aurorans, Since the Ayleids itself were on a the rapist necromantic depraved murderboner sphere of Molag Bal for a longer time. Also its well known that She hates Molag Bal with her guts, and why He is Obsessed in her. Plus the fact of why she gave you Dawnbreaker in SKyrim, said skyrim was also facing A vampire crisis, Said vampires were also created by Molag Bal. And OFC The World Eater itself since he is the rogue aspect of Akatosh. if i were to guess it, the divines punished her for helping the Ayleids and having her powers stolen by them and bal, But they made a deal that she would help Men and Mundus, to fulfil her deal with Lorkhan, since she was involved with the creation of mundus, and Men was his children. So she went to help mortals in Dealing with Bal's machinations and even stop the other Daedra from taking tamriel as penance for her sins, but as the time went on she became more and more weaker, to the point that even Dawnbreaker became lost and powerless, since Umaril was still in her realm with his followers and stealing more of her powers. Until a Shezzarath Sheostrake aka The CoC, showed up and stopped Umaril once and for all, restoring her powers and the control over her realm, But she lost the location of the Dawnbreaker, and She can't materialize herself fully in mundus, which brings to the Beacon, and the Events of Skyrim.
It seems like the longer she's been cast out, the less good she becomes? Maybe Molag Bal is finding his own way to corrupt her? Isn't that his favorite thing to do? Take the most good people, and turn them evil, would be the best for what was supposed to be an aedra of light that hated undead.

I know this video is old. However something you gloss over is when Meridia aided the Ayelids. She didn't intervene until Pelinal was well into his slaughter. Pelinal, like it or not is evil. His indiscriminant butcherery of the Ayelids makes him no different than the Elven rulers. Meridia's intervention was likely a means to save the innoacent.
But that's something many will gloss over when critiquing her. It's true her followers participated in some of the worst crimes imaginable but did she instruct them to do that? They conflate worshiping her with worship of Molag Bal despite there spheres being seemly at odds. The Ayelids cousins the Chimer also have some pretty strange beilfs about the Daedra as well and even turned way from there worship for a time. In fact the vast majority of what the Dunmer did over the course of their history was there own actions not specific edicts given by the Daedric God's they esteem. Meridia likewise cannot be held accountable for the actions of her deranged followers as throughout history her actions showed she was against the perversions of Daedra like Molag Bal 9/10.
Been learning everything I can about the Aylieds and Meridia for my most recent playthrough of Oblivion. I'm playing an Altmer with Aylied ancestors who is sympathetic to them, like Umbacanno. Thanks for the info fudgemuppet!
meridia is one of the few deadra I could get behind. Her and malocath. None are seeking to invade nirn, what they want does not get in the way or mortals much. Hate the undead and look to the light. Value strength and honest work.
She's just an Aedra who chose not to give up her power in the creation of Mundus because her way of doings things requires a different approach, which is just for her to use powers directly. I think where Arkay is not enough for some things she steps in or Stendarr's followers do. In choosing not to sacrifice her power she is on the 'level' of the Daedra but apart from that she is nothing like one, therefore if you follow her its no different from following any of the Aedra. She steps in when something happens like when not even the Dawnguard or Vigilantes of Stendarr are enough.
@@IlMemetor72 There were Ayleids that worshipped her and those that worshipped Bal Both factions were at war with eachother and she destroyed the city of Molag Bals's worshippers, Abigarlis More than likely, really it was only the side worshipped Bal that endlaved and tortured humans since that's part of his sphere
Meridia is a fantastic example of hubris among the venerated. Her own title and position belies her true, internal nature. God, I love the Elder Scrolls.
Thank you. I watch your videos for two reasons. I deepen my understanting of TES lore and I relax and unwind while hearing the calm music, your voice and see the visuals. Thank you for doing an amazing job at keeping me sane.
whenever i hear the words "Dawnbreaker" i dont think of this artifact. I think of a Pathfinder spell that does a nice AOE of Holy and Fire damage around a target. fits with Meridia too.
I suspect that Meridia's assistance of the Aylieds was due to Pelinal Whitestrake fighting on the side of the rebellion - he was well known to be extremely unnatural and largely unstoppable, so there's a good chance she felt the same way about him as she does about undead. There's no evidence that she was fond of the Aylieds at all, but she did assist them once Pelinal took the field against them. Makes me wonder what he truly was.
Daniel Wolf Well he was likely a Shezzarine, an aspect of the dead Lorkhan, and she was one of those who were convinced by, and then rejected, Lorkhan. Although the Ayelids worshipped her before, meaning she is somewhat connected to them whether she approves or not, her assistance might be partially due to her hatred of Lorkhan/Shor/Shezzar’s incarnate.
Is it possible that Meridia was playing as a double agent during the Ayelid/Nedic war? She loved the Ayelid people because they worshipped her, but also knew they needed to be punished, so She sent soldiers that would sabotage them to teach a lesson. Also possible that she wanted to save face with the survivors of the culture who loved her so much. Just a theory.

She is the Daedric Prince I would happily serve, the first Prince I ever did a quest for in any Elder Scrolls series. This is a tradition with every game I play, if there is a quest for Merida it is the first Daedric quest I complete. I adore her and her light.
Besides from the annoying beacon, Meridia is one of my fave Daedra/Aedra. She is one of the kindest and everytime I hear her voice I kinda feel a warm feeling. Like she bath me with her warmth. And her weapon Dawnbreaker is the most coolest name of a weapon and one of the best swords. Really useful for the Dawnguard and Vampire questline. I always enjoy doing Meridia and I hope her shining warm light will guide my path and giving me strength. Others may call her Daedra but for me she is an Aedra.
The first time I did her quest and obtained Dawnbreaker I thought "So, am I a Belmont now?". It always struck me as odd that you can't find anyone worshiping her, all the other daedra have followers you can encounter.
Meridia is my favourite of the gods In the elder scrolls. I think her past where she was a aedra combined with the fact she went on to become a daedric prince is really interesting. Also she's the only daedric prince who Is still think is fundamentally a force for good more than she is for bad. and doesn't have the same degree of viciousness that almost all other Daedric princes possess, as a part of them.
Do a series on all the holds and city-states of other continents please. Would be great to prepare for Beyond Skyrim & the next update for Legacy of the Dragonborn.
Yo I legit was looking for this video yesterday because I was interested in Meridia lore and here it is 1 day later, coincidence? I think not, fries? Yes please.
So since Meridia contributed power to the formation of Mundus, is she able to manifest on it’s surface more easily in the same way the nine divines can? Or do the aedra that retreated with Magnus not have that ability because they didn’t fully bind themselves to Mundus?
I remember a while ago I had a play through where using the alternate start mod I played a vigilant of stendar who did missions for them before there HQ got wrecked. I started by doing the staff of madness and freeing dawnstar then I set out to find the beacon so it could be sealed away from the world. But when I came back the vigilants were slain by the vampire’s. In a moment of rage and grief I made a pilgrimage to the shrine of meridia, purged her sanctum and became her champion with dawnbreaker as my blade. It was a real cool play through role play and game wise, wish I still had my xbox hooked up so I could go back again.

She's my fav daedra. I would love to see a story of her ascending back to aedra-hood
The Aedra are Gods that gave up their powers to the creation of Mundus
The Daedra are Gods that are interacting with Mundus despite not helping in it's creation
Some Daedra are evil, some are not, Daedra is just a term for Gods that did not participate in Lorkhan's plans
Meridia is a Daedra, whether or not she is Good or Evil.
Of course Meridia loving life, and her support of the Ayleids can be reconciled:
The Ayleids were strong, and life is survival of the fittest. And until their defeat, the Ayleids were the fittest.
Life is not only sweet, but also bitter.
Meridia, as an Aedra/Daedra, would have to embody that duality.
Ayleids did nothing wrong. All that race of men do is enslave and subjugate the other races against their will.

Gods are petty things.
The Divine are now retires
She probably sided with the Ayleids because they worshipped her so much whereas the humans didn't.
The gods of Elder Scrolls are more human than most. Wich is expected since they were based on Classic Mythology

Love meridia, waited so long for this
Also one thing, not being Captain "save a daedra": It is possible that Meridia was Cheated out of her Deal with Ayleids, and like Clavicus with Umbra, The Ayleids stole half of her powers to empower Umaril and Take control of her Aurorans, Since the Ayleids itself were on a the rapist necromantic depraved murderboner sphere of Molag Bal for a longer time.

Meridia likewise cannot be held accountable for the actions of her deranged followers as throughout history her actions showed she was against the perversions of Daedra like Molag Bal 9/10.

meridia is one of the few deadra I could get behind.
She also protected and assisted worshippers of Molag Bal soo...
@@IlMemetor72 There were Ayleids that worshipped her and those that worshipped Bal

By far the most evil Deadric Prince. She yelled at me...
So in essence she's the best daedric prince, but that being an astonishingly low bar, it doesn't say much.
I always wonder if Pelinal will return.
