I think she's more of a mix of Mother Isis "matron Goddess of theives" and The Morrigan, Goddess of many things, but her name means Phantom Queen, which is a lot like Nocturnal Aura.
nocturnal is an awesome spin on the archetypal "Lady Luck," turning her from a saintly figure that blesses people with good karma into the patron of thieves, who thrive off of lucky encounters and the spoils that come of it
If she really wanted to, she could very easily get her artifacts back. I think she finds amusement in the pride of thieves when they steal from her, even though she can get them back so easily. A running joke so to speak. Also, I don't think there is a true darkness in regards to Namira and Nocturnal. They're both valid. Namira encases your body in darkness and decay, while Nocturnal encases your soul to eternal darkness. In my opinion, there isn't just one true darkness, both are valid, depending on who you worship.
@@bulbasaurpokemon3573 Well stealing from nocturnal would be the highest form of worship of her. And if a prince wants their artifact back they can recall it at any moment (through history this tends to be in a persons moment of need)
I feel that Namira is the embodiment of the dread of the Void, essentially a primal fear of darkness, whereas Nocturnal is darkness for its own sake. Namira requires others to fulfill her sphere, but Nocturnal is darkness that defies comprehension making her perfectly capable of being "fulfilled" before mortal, or even divine, existence
Nocturnal is very similar to Nyx of Greek lore. She represents the Sacred Darkness. The pleasant night that cools the land from the blistering sun, the shadows that protect the weak from the mighty, and most importantly, the things that hide within the darkness.
Just realized something unrelated but interesting. If TES 6 is in High Rock we may see Castle Volkihar again from the Dawnguard DLC. While speaking to the sailor in Dawnstar he will take the player near there, and it is described as an island near the border to High Rock.
If we do, that would be awesome, maybe see it as another main base for the dawnguard and have it related to a quest, assuming the game would be time wise after the events of Skyrim.
@@dragonborn5832 I wonder now if there is a Dungeon/Castle in Daggerfall that could pass as Volkihar. That game has hundreds of dungeons. But yeah, it would make the most sense if it was a base for the Dawnguard or Vigilants of Stendarr. I could also see it as a ruin with no interior. Just some rubble and walls with items scattered about. A few Easter eggs alluding to the Soul Cairn and vampires perhaps. I'd prefer your idea, but Bethesda has a knack for leaving old locations in states of decay, like Solstheim in a lot of ways. Karstag's castle for example.
@@passerby5735 I'm pretty sure it'll be in Hammerfell though, which is better in my eyes because that was largely the centerpiece of the Great War (and potentially the focus of the second?).

I wish they would've added some secret functionality to the Skeleton Key if you kept in in your inventory during certain quests. Like it could be used to open the portal to Sovngarde or the Soul Cairn, and to open all the puzzle doors (since we see Mercer Frey unlock one of these, iirc). And potentially game-breaking, they could make it open all the locks that normally require a specific key and can't be lockpicked. Even the Dwemer Lock Box in Hermaeus Mora's quest should be opened with the Skeleton Key. All in all, this would really just let you skip portions of quests and wouldn't be the most fun thing if you were meant to keep it, but if you could get a taste of its power before you return it then that would be really cool.
I don't think the Ebonmere is talked about enough. It's a portal to Oblivion. Not an illusion, not door for spirits only. It is straight up an Oblivion gate that Nocturnal, in her true form, passes through. The existence of this portal is extremely interesting
@@pao9789 It is 100% a direct passage to Oblivion though. There is no reason why Nocturnal could not pass through it and naturally she would keep this very hidden from any princes wishing to invade through it
@@pao9789 If this was simply another Oblivion Gate subject to the same rules, it wouldn't be as special as it's made out to be. There are plenty of ways to travel to Oblivion but the Ebonmere is held in very high regard and is extremely ancient. Either absorbed by another dragon/dragonborn, goes to sovenguard, is absorbed by AKATOSH. Or more likely goes to mora as he is the only one we serve in canon
@@the_dropbear4392 that's the tricky part, huh. The DB has a number of claims on their soul and if you complete the Companions(Hircine), Thieves Guild(Nocturnal) & Dark Brotherhood(Sithis) quest lines even more deities can put a claim on their soul. Miraak's soul in the end went to Herma Mora so maybe Akatosh doesn't take the DB soul back if they mess with Daedra.
You know, what would be a nice incentive to become a member of the thieves guild / Nightingales: fortify all thieves skills by 5% permanently added to your active effects after you've entered into the Nightingale contract with Nocturnal. It's said that the Daedra are are born of padomay's blood, while the aedra are born of a mixture of anu and padomay's blood. In short, all dedric entities represent Padomay in some form, and so do they aedra, to a lesser extent. While Namira may have more in common with Sithis, what Nocturnal's name means is that she was the first of the Daedra to take form, and also symbolizes her, as daedra are nothing more than their sphere of influence allows. For instance, if you were to ask a daedra what Molag Bal's true name is they'd say Stone-fire, which is more or less symbolism for his sphere of influence, but taken in the literal form makes no fucking sense
Merida (ex magna-ge) and Jygglag are very anuic. And malacath was once an aerdra. So thats three anuic Daedra. And in the lore they all came from a mix between Anui-el and Sithis (Anu and Padomay), not the blood just the interplay between Everlasting light/soul of everything and darkness/nothingness
@@the_dropbear4392 while you're correct, you're also incorrect. Each Tamrielic culture explains the birth of the daedra and aedra differently. One such variant is that anu and padomay battled, and the resulting blood formed the Et'Ada, with the Daedra being composed of Anu's blood, and the Aedra a mixture. Of course, Aldmeri history states that the difference between daedra and aedra is whether or not they were ancestors to them, however, the humans and khajiit also refer to the aedra as such, despite their ancestor being Lorkhan/Lorkhaj.
@@mostevilcoral6568 That's because Aedra is a elvish word. Also the cultures that have them physically battling, made it like that so they could understand it better. By personifying Anu and Padomay it made them easier to understand
@@the_dropbear4392 Yes they're elven words, but regardless men use them, as it symbolizes the "good" gods. The Daedra and Aedra being created from their blood is not metaphorical, Anu and Padomay being polar opposites fought over nirni, and died. Their blood quite literally spawned the Daedric and Aedric entities, just as Boethia's feces spawned Malacath. To better understand, I'll provide you with this link: elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Anu
@@mostevilcoral6568 I wouldn't trust that books, we don't know who wrote it. Also it has several things wrong. Time didn't exist until AKA formed, When Anu and Padomay first met time didn't exist. It also says they met in the void which is wrong, Sithis is the void and Sithis and Anui-el exist inside the interplay between Anu and Padomay (Stasis and Change). Also it says Anu fled to the Sun, which didn't exist until Magnus tore a whole in reality.
Vulari. The Governess of Despair. Her and Nocturnal share in the same values. Of course, the main difference between the two is that Vulari is a governess of a mortal emotion/affliction, whereas Nocturnal is the DM of her own realm, and a symbol of virtue for a specific type of individual. Of course, Nocturnal bestows her good graces to all patrons of stealth, and Vulari, the same. Azura, Meridia, and Nocturnal are my favorite of the Female by choice Daedric Princes. Sanguine and Hircine are my favorite Male by choice Daedric Princes. And Hermaeus Mora is my favorite Formless Daedric Prince.
"I'm willing to risk provoking Her ire in the name of discovery." ...Given the way Nocturnal rolls, she'd respect you for that. Probably even reward you for the sheer boldness, so long as you pulled it off.
I can't. Her desperate grab for power pulled back her shroud for just a moment, showing us all that she's just as craven, power-hungry, and evil as the rest of her fellow Princes.
Okay, I'll grant that Azura, Meridia, and some of the others don't TECHNICALLY meet the definition of evil. But Molag Bal's...creation of the first vampire was DEFINITELY evil, as was Nocturnal's attempted takeover of the Crystal Tower. Evil is as evil does. ;)
@@JediNiyte The thing is Molag is domination, corruption and rape personified. He doesn't get a choice in the matter, he can't fight his own nature any more than AKATOSH can stop being time

Sorry for spoiling the mood, but amount of misconceptions you've made is almost offending. "Ur-Dra" doesn't mean "First Darkness" or "Original Daedra". It should be translated as "First/Supreme Ancestor". Now quick lesson of Ayleidoon. Ur is morphene defining primacy. Adamantine Tower, first and most important Tower, was called Ur Tower. Voryn Dagoth, head of fallen House Dagoth, was better know as Dagoth Ur. And for Dra... as we know "Daedra" mean "Not Our Ancestors", while "Aedra" mean "Our Ancestors". So "D-" is equal to "non-". "Ae" is used in loretext with multiple meanings, but here it's "our". So for "Dra" only "Ancestor" left. Now why is she called that way? Clearly it's not mortal misconception, therefore, some of well informed individuals caled her that way. It would be psijiic sage Lilatha and living god of knowledge Sotha Sil. Believe me, they know what they are saying. Oh, and Xan is stating that this title is accorded by nearly all of Oblivion Royalty. In fact, that title never was thrown by mortal. It was always connected to something bigger. Also, first persona gave us possible explanation why "Ur-Dra": "The Night Mistress is Ur-dra - perhaps the eldest and most powerful of the Daedric Princes.", which clicks perfectly with Xan's "As the mother of night, she claims to be an aspect of the original Void itself, (...)". Maybe her domain isn't synonymous with Void itself, but it's derrived directly from it, what makes her one of eldest and most powerful et'Ada. As for Namira, I believe you overinterpreted "sphere of ancient darkness", which was more symbolic than factual. I believe it was derrivered from Khajiit nickname of "Great Darkness", as they called her. And as for it, in context of Maw of Lorkhaj it was more about negative/evil influence than controlling night itself. In fact, none of her words or actions hinted us into thinking she have power over darkness. She's all about decay and that's ain't old domain. In fact it was formed only after Lorkhan's demise. So it makes her one of the youngest Princes. Also decay doesn't lead to nothingness. It's more of reusing physical elements in cycle of life and death. As for worshipping Nocturnal, here you're also wrong. Xan mentioned prayers. In ESO Hagravens and Tundilwen were clearly her cultist. What's left? Skeleton Key? Opening metaphysical locks isn't unimaginable. In fact, we saw great example of that power. In CWC Nocturnal almost dettached Sotha Sil from his Realm with it.
I'm watching your videos with auto-generated subtitles. Not only do they get most things right, they also correctly display words like Mundus and Daedra. Someone in the UA-cam dev team is a fan.

"The Skeleton Key can unlock not only any physical lock but ethereal and metaphysical locks, portals, etc. And it cannot be broken by known means." nocturnal is an awesome spin on the archetypal "Lady Luck," turning her from a saintly figure that blesses people with good karma into the patron of thieves, who thrive off of lucky encounters and the spoils that come of it
If she really wanted to, she could very easily get her artifacts back.
Why do some thieves try to steal from a Daedra..?
@@bulbasaurpokemon3573
Well stealing from nocturnal would be the highest form of worship of her.
And if a prince wants their artifact back they can recall it at any moment (through history this tends to be in a persons moment of need)
Wouldn't the true darkness be Sithis? The littreal oppiste of existance?
Dan R. I believe the darkness of Sithis is the absence of life.
Hence the trueist and earliest darkness.

Daedric lord ----> Edge lord

not all mortals fear the void, the argonians for instance
The dark brotherhood
True. The Argonians don't experience the "Void" like other races do, since they experience a sort of reincarnation through the Hist trees.
Well I could accept her if her followers dont steal my sweetrolls.
...or cheese. Thieves can take my 10 coins, but don't they dare touch my cheese.
...(Slowly puts the cheese back into your pocket I just picked...)

The existence of this portal is extremely interesting
it's probably an avatar rather than her true form, it must take more than just a gate to bring a daedric prince to mundus
@@pao9789 It is 100% a direct passage to Oblivion though. There is no reason why Nocturnal could not pass through it and naturally she would keep this very hidden from any princes wishing to invade through it
@@isaac_aren I mean, the same reason why mehrunes dagon couldn't just pass through any oblivion gate to get to mundus at will
@@pao9789 If this was simply another Oblivion Gate subject to the same rules, it wouldn't be as special as it's made out to be. There are plenty of ways to travel to Oblivion but the Ebonmere is held in very high regard and is extremely ancient. I really have to hand it to the creators behind Fudge Muppet. The way you tell a story that isn’t your own is a talent and I mean this sincerely; it’s easy to embellish facts and push the envelope of what facts can be said about a Prince who specializes in being unidentifiable and yet you use the right words and pacing and plotting to make the tale as comprehensible and as factual as possible.

@@mostevilcoral6568
That's because Aedra is a elvish word.

I wouldn't trust that books, we don't know who wrote it.
I always get a chuckle out of the "false ending" gag

It was Vulari who suggested to me that I try my hand at training in stealth, and of course, I excel, but my training in stealth is more assassin-leaning since I also train in the sword and in Parkour.
