It's so hard to even have anything regarding France with out someone meting the coward stereotype and it makes me feel as if I am drowning because of how inescapable it is haha I don't think it is that bad but does deserve some ridicule. People wouldn't have called it, "the best single shot rifle of ww1," if it didn't deserve it haha.
Just wanted to thank you Alex. Before I found your channel I was a bit hesitant to buy some Milsurp rifles or even fire arms in general as I thought I would be lost in the dark once I got them. However watching your videos like these helped figure it out and I now am the proud owner of a n4 mk1 enfeild and a Vz 24 Czech mauser thanks for the good times.
Crude, but a good rifle. The soldiers used it to their best extent and judging by the results it didn't have any issues in WW1.They used tactics with this rifle and it worked.(Keeping it single while the enemy is further away and using the 8 when things get up close and personal)
+TreeWizard648 My lebel is probably not as accurate either (Mine has its original barrel made in 1889). I had some promising results with handloads at 50 yards, but I never took it past that distance.
The French are often the butt of military jokes but lest we forget, they're also one of a rather small handful of nations that came close to conquering all of Europe, and like at least one of those they made the bitter mistake of invading Russia, which was more or less the only thing that stopped them.
yes and i think that in ww1 the germans never laught about french soldiers...for example the 152° regiment of infantry installed in my city was named from the germans "the red devils" ( because they increddible combativeness in very hard mountain conditions...)
unfortunately, it seems like the failures of the French in WW2 and in Indochina during the 50s and 60s overshadow hundreds of years of French history, because those losses are still in living memory
Solid gun for its time even though it has its flaws; the Lebel was still reliable and accurate for French troops. If possible, I would like to see a video about the Berthier Modèle 1907/15 or Modèle 1907/16, the rifle that was designed to replace the Lebel in the French army during WW1. From what I could get, Berthier rifles and carbines served quite a long time for French military and police units.
Thank you for supporting french rifles .Ian , at Forgotten weapons , is also a francophile ,and it makes my day to read fair reviews ,from REAL professionals , not laptop warriors.
That's not the case with every weapon. The M16/AR15 has been in service for 52 years and is still very relevant. The Lebel was surpassed in 2 years by the G88 and was obsolete in less than 20 years which is why the French developed the Berthier.
I hate to break it to you but the M1911A1 is not being reintroduced as the general issued sidearm. The Glock 19 however is seeing increased use by MARSOC and SOCOM and some say the Army might adopt it because of the other branches using it.
The Glock 19 is in 9mm. It is the Gen 3 version also. I doubt the United States will adopt a caliber outside of the NATO standard. Especially since the military is wanting 9mm hollow points now that makes very little reason to go to 45.
Glocks have been around for over 30 years and are used by thousands of police and militaries around the world. I would say that 9mm hollow points can outperform 45 FMJ. There's a reason why 9mm has been used to shoot people for over 100 years.
+MisteroZodiac Yeah you must have missed every 5 Guns video TFB has ever put out. Eric briefly stated in a video how a lot of newer channels are doing 5 Guns videos, just like how IV8888 has been doing for years. I personally love both channels, each bring a lot to the table.
i must say its a beautiful rifle, if you probably heard of paper cartridges they mention in their video about the lebel for its high velocity & flat trajectory i think is one of the reasons why that gun is very accurate.
So, I know I'm gonna get blasted for being brought here by Battlefield, but I'm curious about something about the lebel in the game. When the character loads the last round into the gun, they do this weird thing where it looks like they pull the bolt twice, before locking it to the side. What exactly is that supposed to be doing? I didn't see you do anything similar in the video, and it looks really strange in the game.
They are causing a round to go come out of the magazine with the first bolt use, and when they slide it back and close it they are fully chambering it. That's the downside of tube magazine fed bolt actions.
To reactivate the elevator, you have to firmly yank the bolt backwards, so i assume he is doing this to lower the elevator, pick up a new cartridge, rise the elevator and finally chamber the round
This rifle never gets old. I hope to get my hands on one - one day. They're a magnificent piece of history and a way for me to maybe understand how my great grandfather must've felt using one.
I love the Lebel, mostly because in battlefield one I loved the reload animation and proved itself to be very reliable, mostly used the one without the scope and I could still hit in medium and that one time at long range engagements
If I'm not mistaken, the British Lee-Enfield (or at least some early versions of them) also featured a magazine cut-off. The soldiers would load 5 or 10 rounds in the magazine as a reserve, and use single loading for long range fire exchange with entrenched forces. When the shit hit the fan and rapid, uninterrupted fire was necessary, the magazine cut-off was released and shots could be fired in rapid succession.
+Hornbowman Many bolt actions of the period featured magazine cutoffs. It was pretty standard for the time (even the springfield 1903a3 had a mag cutoff).
Wish that cartridge had a little more "power" behind it. It only moves about 2,400 feet per second, compared to say a 7.92x57 Mauser or 30.06 Springfield, which is moving 2,700 to 2,800 feet per second. But still a very significant rifle in firearms history and I like the uniqueness of the rifle.
paul lytle fair point. That cartridge does have more energy behind it. If I recall correctly the 30.06 is about 150 grain, while the Lebel is 190 grains.
Me too and this Lebel 1886 has the correct gun sound in battlefield 1 since there might be some Lebel 1886s in the Swedish army museum that DICE has access to
There is a shipwreck ofF the coast of NJ that went down with lots of these rounds on board headed for France during world war I. I have a handful of them in a mug in my garage. The ship is called the city of Athens but locally is known as the ammo wreck.
In battlefied with a rifle, at this time, you had no time to reload anything else. You ended with bayonet ! The trenches where 50 meters apart! Lebel was clearly superior for that! Only the cost was the reason for the change to the Berthier.
i find with my mosin 91/30 is you keep forward pressure on the bolt while reloading and bringing it help keep from those hang ups when coming back down with the strait bolt. so shove the bolt forward (twords the firing end of the rifle) while coming down with it locking in the new round. not sure if its true with the lebel but try it.
I always liked the Lebel, especially the shape of the bolt-handle. Also, there is something very Winchester-looking about the receiver being a box with exposed metal on the sides of the rifle, not nested down in the wood like Mausers, Springfields, & Mosins. Did it get outclassed by other rifles in short order? Yes. But the French, it should be noted, never surrendered in WWI. They & the Germans instead turned places like Verdun into massive slaughterhouses. Tragic as hell when you really think about it...
We happend to find one of these buried in our pasture totally useless except for a conversation peace but cool none the less, Just can't figure how it got dropped/buried in Texas

Don't forget...the Entente traded with each other. For 1915 and 1916 it was the Lewis Gun that the French relied on for fire support on the offensive.
Is the bolt sticky because it's a poor design, or because it's a 130 year old gun?
Both
Do we really care of the design in a war ?
My lebel is in worse condition, but the bolt is not sticky at all.
+TreeWizard648 My lebel is probably not as accurate either (Mine has its original barrel made in 1889). I had some promising results with handloads at 50 yards, but I never took it past that distance.
I would think more due to the thumb and forefinger manipulation of bolt rather than the palm grabbing the bolt and using it the way it is designed.

it was designed for the cavalry units of the French army as the lebel was too cumbersome for horseback, never to replace it as infantry standard use.
The gun itself didn't change the world, the ammo it fired did.
