    Honestly, I’m gonna miss the dirt screen. It’s been an iconic, recognizable part of Minecraft since literally forever.
    But c’mon, the new UI looks awesome!

      On the plus side for people who don't like the change, if programmer art can bring back the dirt screen then custom resource packs should be able to easily bring it back too!

    Not sure how I feel about the dirt screen being gone, but the credits screen using the end portal texture as the background is super cool. Kinda adds new meaning to the texture - paired with the dialogue, it's like you're peering beyond the veil.

    In my opinion horse armor needs to change to be like wolf armor, like having durability and maybe having exclusive horse armor enchantments, like water walk and sprint, and to balance whenever the enchantments are in use the durability depletes faster and you'll have to repair with the correspond material in a anvil

      at least being able to dye leather horse armor like everything else would be nice. maybe if they really wanted to they could give the rest of them all armor trim capability, they definitely wouldn’t texture all of that though (even though they’d only have to do it once for each trim)

    I just love the mushrooms on the bogged. Before it was fine, but having them actually be 3d like the mooshroom's mushrooms makes it look so much better... And being able to shear them is just such a fun detail they didn't even need to include, but its so much better for it!

      I 100% agree with this, tho i think the bogged's new texture would be perfect if it still retained it's green-ish bones but other than that, the new texture is just awsome!

    A somewhat significant thing: The max_health attribute is the max health of the entity, not its current health. The current health is in the Health tag. The max health doesn't change except for status effects and such. So it might have a max health of 40, but an actual health of 2.

      Yeah, definitely. But also, he's still right that the armor absorbs the damage and the wolf remained at 40 health, even if he pointed to the wrong tag 😁

    It would be nice if when you brush the armadillo, said armadillo would have an animation for shaking the scute off, and also maybe since your brushing it, maybe it could make a noise like its being tickled by the brush.

    I never thought mojang would actually add dyeable wolf armor. I'm impressed. The change on how they work also is great, hopefully they come with enchantments too, in the future.
    Love the UI changes as well.
    This is the snapshot that I liked in quite a while. It's a shame that they didn't add anything new (kind of), so hopefully there are still more to come.

      @@coffeeaddict4451 I don't wanna argue about this. We can't change it anymore. But I didn't vote for the armadillo... The dog armour was supposed to be in the game since horse armour. The mob vote is a joke. If Mojang wants to add a function for the game, it doesn't need a mob for that. That said, they added the function for increasing the block placing reach with commands, but because of the mob vote, it's not accessible in vanilla. The mob vote is just a waste of resources. Even if the crab claw was a rare item from fishing for example, just add it to the game... Mobs are hard to code. New item that uses a command? Easy

      @@coffeeaddict4451 you mean, the initial dog armor that didn't protect your dog from one explosion, right? the dog armor that hardly protected your dog from fire/lava, the dog armor that didn't protect your dog from fall damage, the dog armor that hardly protected your dog from projectiles, the dog armor that wouldn't have been worth the trouble of trying to find an armadillo, that one.
      because if that's the main reason why it was the best choice, then the armadillo would've just been yet another sniffer. had the dog armor not been buffed, then the only good thing about choosing the armadillo was that we got another cute animal. like how the sniffer is a big and cuddly animal.
      (seriously though, why does the sniffer only get you two things? why isn't like four or five?)

    That new UI looks really good, I thought it was weird that the world creation screen is basically starting a new adventure and the background is literally just dirt
    Also they finally added dyeable wolf armor, so that's nice

    Please note Health:40 is the actual health, whilst Attribute:[{max_health,Base:40}] just shows the maximum health of the entity.

    I belive "dry out" damage is the opposite of drowning for aquatic mobs, like fish and squid, when they're out of water.
    Obviously, wolves don't breathe underwater. But I think it's implemented for the sake of completeness.

      @@BryannaMeinel they do, which is why it is hard to keep them alive in cages and stuff because when you leave their area, their ai will become inactive and either drown or dry out depending on if they were in water or not at the time

      As someone who lurks on the CaffeineMC Discord (makers of Sodium, Lithium and the less relevant these days Hydrogen and Phosphor), Minecraft Java's graphics are held together with blind luck and crazy choices, so something like that would almost certainly be iffy.
      For those interested in examples, by blind luck I mean things like incorrectly structured graphics API calls that only work because they intersect with a weirdly specific failure that means nothing crashes and by crazy choices I mean things like items in the inventory are rendered as individual pixels instead of as whole textures or text being drawn 3 times to get the shadows (instead of proper shadow techniques). It's not all bad, but in many cases Minecraft is not doing anything smart with the graphics system, which makes pretty things harder than they might be otherwise.

    I'm really glad to see the new wolf armor dyeing has gone the leather armor route - it really means you can match your little guy at the beginning of the progression. Just a player and their dog against the world.

      I'm scared to see how much custom maps are going to be broken past certain versions. I made a custom map a year ago and I don't think I'm going to update it to the new command system, nonetheless, I know people like AvidMC on UA-cam run a Minecraft server with friends that uses commands heavily for a custom experience, stuff like that I can imagine will be completely broken.
      I do hope that the new structured stuff is easier to understand over NBT command jazz. But it'll be something new to learn.

Last time we had a change worse than this was the 1.13 technical update which was a nightmare

    That blur effect was something we were doing with the mod called Blur. I am glad they implemented it. Not completely but partially.

    The nbt changes are the definition of this is fine meme. Its lit everything on fire for the next few weeks for every plugin mod datapack and map

      Truth. But also, it's a good change overall, so I'm not mad. I spend a lot of time at work refactoring code, I may as well do the same for my datapacks 😂

      Most plugins and mods would be not affected as much as datapacks would be because they directly use Java instead of commands.
      Also Java class / method names change a lot between different versions without being written in the change log - causing a lot of difficulties for modders. This is also the reason why most 1.12.2 mods do not update to modern Minecraft versions.

      @@samuelhulme8347I mean, they *would* be affected because those changes to the tag structure are specifically to support a change to the data in memory, so those data structures need to change in any mod currently storing any of that data on its items.
      But as you said, typically every MC update requires a port of existing mods anyway, due to all the internal changes; so it's not that it doesn't affect them, just that it's to be expected with mods in every update anyway.

    This is a really great change for the wolf armor.
    The damage nullification, breaking the armor, makes the wolves much more useable, while also making the armadillos a lot more useful over time. It would be great if they did this with horse armor too, so you don't just have a billion different sets that you'll never use (and the different types would have more use than mostly just aesthetic).

      I would love that the different horse armor types did different things. Like leather armor keeps your horse from falling through powder snow but provides less overall protection just like the player's (because I'm pretty sure right now there's zero difference between any of them?), and then maybe one of them specifically adds protection against fall damage, fire damage, or blast/attack damage. I don't mind the idea of adding durability so long as we can repair them like the scutes, mainly because they are not craftable.

Im sure someone could find farming implications to this. They would just be so astonished by magnificent 4 legged golden strider. Might not even know it is armor.

    These dog changes are absolutely incredible, giving more variety to dogs and some actual protection in exchange for durability, dog armor suddenly becomes something that needs to be collected more and more instead of one-and-done ❤

    Big fan of the wolf armor changes, since it now looks like it will actually protect doggos from the types of damage they most frequently deal with.
    Also, shearing a bogged for mushrooms is such a random, but fun feature.

      Now would be a good time to introduce some kind of mechanic to make them roam around on their own instead of always following the player. It would be cool to have 'guard dogs' patrolling your base like golems, taking out mobs if they show up. But we're stuck with "stay" or "follow me and attack stuff" as the only two options.

      It will certainly require a lot of refactoring of existing datapacks and command block commands, but the result is cleaner and more efficient, so I think it's worth it!

I'm so tired of them breaking stuff for mapmakers in every update. Wish they'd put that effort into new content instead, for Pete's sake.

      @an7746As a software developer, I can assure you that refactoring code to make it cleaner and to make it work better is almost always worth the time; that applies not just to Minecraft scripting but to real code as well. It's a trade-off of more work now for less trouble later.

      Websites, or programs, that streamline writing NBT data based commands might switch to the new system. That would make the new system easier to use. There might even be websites for converting NBT data to the new system, over time

    With the Bogged mob, now we have a red and brown mushroom farm available without having to grow them up, or rely on mushroom spreading, which is slow as hell. Sounds interesting. As brown mushrooms are good for slime farms. They don't really have much other uses though.

      You can get them from raising and shearing mooshrooms if you need the beef and leather already. Not a lot, but it's a nice little bonus and doesn't take long to shear them before offing them.

      @nikov70 I mean, it's true I guess, but building a mooshroom farm for that sounds ike a much bigger hassle than building a general mob farm in a swamp. Heck, swamps are already a great place for farms due to witch huts. Even if witches are faster to farm in a raid farm. than in any other ways I know of. Swamp based slime farm, Swamp based general mob farm with "bogged" included in the mob selection, a witch hut based witch farm, swamps are getting a ton of love, when it comes to options for building unique mob farms, and I'm loving it.
      Heck, swamps also had a frog variant no? Meaning a frog breeding setup would be nice and functional there too.
      Edit: dowe know if Bogged can turn into strays? If not, than both slowness and poison arrows can be farmed nicely with 1 farm this way, as normal skeletons do turn into strays if they're in powdered snow long enough. (falling through a combination of powedered snow + cobweb + powdered snow + cobweb in this order is just enough time for them, at least that was the case a few patches ago)
      Infinite supply of not only bones, but also 3 types of arrows.

      You can easily make stew with mushrooms, and it replenishes 6 hunger, and with the most common flower in the game you can make some of the best food in the game

      @@Wortigon2000 I'm not talking about a mooshroom "farm", just snatching a few of them from a mushroom island and breeding them the way you normally breed cows. It's also a lot easier now to get brown mooshrooms in early game by using a lightning rod instead of having to find a channeling trident. It's no different than breeding cows besides the extra step of shearing them first.
      I'm still waiting to hear if mob spawners in swamps will start having bogged variants. That would be a nice addition, although it's easy enough to make a mob separator for a general mob farm. But again, a larger project and I'm thinking small and easy here.

    Regarding custom NBT, I would say the simple fix is to keep nbt as a tag, so anything using it for custom things can keep using it, just move most properties to properties instead. There could even be backwards compatibility in the form of whenever you set nbt, any property that should be a property is removed and set as the custom property.

    I'd love to see you or someone else test out how much of an effect the NBT tag change has on performance. I'm not sure what actually causes this type of lag, maybe having tons of banners around?

      The particular performance improvement here is in serialization/deserialization. Current item stacks have an NBT tag called "tag", which stores a bunch of built-in properties, but can also store any custom data. Because the property names and data types are not known in advance, every time any of these properties needs to be looked up, the entire "tag" needs to be deserialized (converted from a string to an object in memory). That's a relatively slow process.
      By moving these properties into well-defined, structured components, any of the properties mentioned in the snapshot article can now be looked up without deserializing anything. So they just deserialize once when the entity or block entity holding the items loads, and then serialize once when they save (or are changed/returned by commands); they don't need to keep deserializing for every lookup, which is a nice boost in performance. (The new custom data component *will* still need to do that, but the game only looks those properties up when a command/datapack asks it to, so that's much less frequently.)
      So really, any time you open an inventory with items in it, or throw or pick up items, this optimization will apply ☺

    As someone who’s pretty into doing wacky stuff with command blocks, ot kinda sucks that the change from NBT to the new system is going to break a few things, but I think I like the new system better! Seems far more intuitive to me than NBT ever was, but I’ll have to see for myself.
    Also that Wolf Armor buff is HUGE! Might make bringing those guys into a fight more worth it than not!

      To be clear, it's still using NBT. It's just the specific NBT tag on item stacks called "tag" is being removed and replaced with more structured components, to reduce the overhead of serialization/deserialization.

Data-driven defined groups of objects? Tags! Data that's serialized in any way in the game? Tags! The specific NBT tag that is (now was) used for item data? ALSO TAGS! 😂
      ...okay, that's 4, not 10... but I'm sure I'm missing like 6 others.

    Its really nice that the armour stops all the damage, instead of just reducing it. This change might actually make using wolves in combat viable. Cos before even though it reduced the damage, it definitely wasn't enough to keep them alive for long

      Will probably be resource packs that makes it stop spinning thou, not very uncommon for people to det dizzy from spinning cameras.
      But it should absolutley be an alternative in game.

    I'm so happy we can dye the armor, I highly doubt it but it would be cool if we get some new dog breeds since the dogs are getting some love with the armor. And I love the new background being just blurred when you go into the menus that will be nice

    UI change is amazing, although the game end screen, after killing the enderdragon, shouldn’t have changed in my opinion. The dirt background made it memorable, and it gave a feeling of achievement and completion

    The next layer of progression after tools and armor:
    Accessories Increases player’s stats like hit points, block reach, jump height, inventory slots… . An Additional heart icons will appear for the player.
    Accessories are crafted with blocks of ore (blocks of diamond, iron…) and unique loot from epic dungeons.
    They have levels just like tools and armor according to the ore it’s made of, just like armor and tools.
    They are spread through the dimension they are useful for, for example to craft the one who extends block reach, one should go to caves(trail chambers), adding inventory slots -> the end, adding breath points/bubbles oceans and adding hit points/hearts -> warden dimension… .

    the wind charges would fit so well with a windstaff, where you can use the charge whenever you want I think it would be an amazing addition to combat / movement. Would actually give some incentive to go to the trial chambers.

      I'm not sure what you mean. I think the staff would destroy a core incentive to the chambers, farming for wind charges. If you have end game loot the chambers become nearly useless to visit, so having a renewable source of a specialized tool only found in the chambers will guarantee players returning and engaging with the other aspects of the trial. Thooooo a wind staff does seem cool if it's rare loot. It would need its own function to keep the balance in check.

      that makes wind charges themselves useless, there needs to be a downside. i think it would be best if the staff had a longer cooldown, youd still use it just fine for exploration, but you want the charges for crazy parkour and pvp

    I've been working on a datapack that relies heavily on the item "tag" tag for custom data... now I have to refactor it all 😅 Ah, well; this is a good change, as it cleans up a lot of the code structure. Technically, using "tag" as custom data storage wasn't intended and so it's pretty inefficient (the way serialization/deserialization works) and had zero validation for the built-in tags; so structured components are definitely nicer.
    Don't mind me, I'll be spending all day at work refactoring code, and then all my free time refactoring Minecraft datapacks 😂

    The new ui looks really good in the menu but the background blur on the in game pause screen makes me feel ill.
    It's nice there's an accessibility setting for it, but I just wish the blur effect was implemented better. I don't have this issue with the gaussian blur applied by the blur mod, but the effect they use here is much more egregious.

    It's good that you can revert back to the old design of background user interface.
    My criticism would be to make a direct cut to black when you exit the end portal for the first time, and then we have a gradient to the end portal background and minecraft poeme.
    It's just that in my opinion, the background jump on your face too suddenly.
    With the Nether, it could be reverted to the dirt background, because, it's quite ugly otherwise the transition.

    I love the Bogged, that was such a great way of upgrading the poison arrow skeletons and the change to let you shear mushrooms off of them is so cool. I think the vault texture change was to allow it to be more universally usable as opposed to specific to this copper themed dungeon

    I'm very glad that the programmer art texture pack (which I use) doesn't seem to be getting the old dirt menu backgrounds removed.
    The main menu is fine to have a constantly moving background on. There's five large buttons, (and two small ones that are shortcuts to menus you can also get to through one of the larger buttons) and pressing any of them takes you to a different menu (or closes the game). So it's easy enough to focus on the particular button you're looking for, and unless you're deliberately watching the panorama, you're unlikely to be on the main menu for more than a few seconds.
    Other menus are more complex. Even with the blur removed, the shifting background behind a menu with twenty different buttons and sliders to make sense of would give me a headache. I'm way too prone to headaches already, it's always good to be able to avoid extra sources...

    The new wolf armor behavior is awesome in my opinion! Maybe even a little too op, given how easy it is to obtain scutes it basically acts as a 64 HP health extension with no real drawbacks right now. Another great idea I saw somewhere else is enchantable wolf (and horse) armor. I can imagine enchants like "strength" (wolf attack up) "speed" or protection working well to make your companions even stronger.

    4:05 I believe dry_out would be for sea creatures suffocating on land. It’s the kind of thing that would go through armor, it’s just that wolves can’t take that kind of damage normally (maybe with datapacks they could though).

    The “dry_out” damage type is a new damage type added alongside the /damage command (at least I think it’s new) which when killed by it, the message in the chat will be “player died from dehydration”, which is interesting considering there is no thirst or anything similar

    Misode has been looking into a lot of the changes in this snapshot and there's a pretty interesting one that seems to have gone mostly overlooked. There is now a json file which details all of the block definitions in the game. It doesn't have any meaningful functionality yet, but he's pretty sure it's a precursor to being able to modify or even add blocks using data packs.

    I'm guessing the change to remove NBT from items is both to keep it in line with the Bedrock version and to eventually implement into the Bedrock version. I mostly play on Java, so it was a surprise when I played Bedrock with a family member to learn that currently you can't put enchantments on items with the /give command. I just hope they keep the ability to do extremely overpowered level 255 enchantments.

      Maybe parity is part of it, but it's more for optimization reasons. They're not removing all NBT from item stacks; they're just moving the "tag" tags to more structured components. Before, "tag" could contain any data in addition to the default properties. That means it needs to be deserialized (converted from a string to an object in memory) every time any of those properties needed to be looked up, because there was no way of knowing beforehand what properties there might be on them. Serialization/deserialization is relatively slow.
      By moving the defaults out into their own well-defined components (enchantments, damage, etc.) they can know in advance exactly what data and types will be available, reducing the need to deserialize for each lookup. (It only needs to deserialize once when the entity loads, and serialize once when the entity saves; or if commands are used to read or write the data.) Now the only bits that need to be deserialized every time are the custom properties, not any of the default ones. That's a pretty big performance boost to any world with lots of items.

    Don't know if you ever got an answer, but drying out is basically what squids and fish do when they die on land. Obviously wolves don't breathe water so they'll never get drying out damage

    I really like the changes to wolf armour and I think making it add hits instead of reducing damage, making it easier to repair and manage is definitely a cool change. Genuinely thought dye compatibility wasn’t coming since the new wolf collars seemed like a compromise on Mojang’s end, but I’m glad it’s actually finally here.

    Getting mushrooms from shearing Bogged is actually really cool, but now I kind of want a Zombie Piglin and Zoglin variant with warped mushrooms sticking out of it.
    You could shear them to get warped mushrooms, and Piglins would be afraid of them and run away, while Striders would follow them around. Perhaps they could inflict nausea if they hit you.

    My one problem with the new UI is that a moving background is less accessible, it's probably going to make me nauseous on bad days. 🤢😞If we got the option to turn off background movement (and ideally pick the opacity of the darkened area) then I'd absolutely love it though, it's really sleek looking. Using Programmer Art isn't really a solution imo because there should be a way to have the same level of accessibility without being forced to use the older textures at the same time.
    Other than the UI thing I am really liking the changes though! Bit sad that the Bogged lost their green bone colour, but I love their new 3D mushrooms and shearing them is such a fun bonus feature. ✂🍄😀Dog armour is super nice of course. (Now let us heal cats with fish and make the horse armour work more like the dog one next, Mojang, please and thank you!)
    [Also, I find the new End Poem background much prettier but harder to read, especially for the turquoise text. Don't know how I'd fix that, but it's a far tinier part of the game than the UI so it's hardly as bothersome. But adding this tiny gripe for completeness' sake.]

    Love how mumbo was having to shorten his redstone because of the randomness of the breeze charges hopefully this help him with increasing the distance

    Those wolf armor changes are so good I'm at a loss. So glad that voting for the armadillo wasn't underwhelming like I was scared it'd be, and that Mojang changed it so much based on feedback, not just dropping it and leaving it as is. 1.21 is looking incredible.

    Yay! Wolf Armor works in a fun and functional way now!
    I kinda miss the old texture of the Bogged. It had a nice algy-covered, ghostly pirate vibe. Maybe Mojang could repurpose the initial design into a brand new mob. Perhaps one that can only be hurt by magic/special inchants.
