Mr. Earle is the perfect example of using what you are given and making something tremendous out of it. He goes to show that you can either let your struggles define you, or you can use them to shape you into something better. Good on ya Mr. Earle :)
Wait till his son's passing has time to marinate in this master song writers heart .. He has already begun to write about Justin but I gotta a hunch there is more to come .. my condolences Steve and RIP Justin
I bought steve and dwights first records when they came out back in the 80s. It was important for me to hear new country music from 2 guys that actually knew what the hell it was, is and will always be in it's truest form: honest.
Just saw this genius last Thursday. 30th anniversary of the Copperhead Road album. They played the entire album from beginning to end and then some exit zero and guitar town and more. Glad I was able to see him.
Steve Earle ... I walked in to you at lockn ... 2014 ... And it blew my my mind ... My kid was 4 hes 7 now ... No one knew who you you were but I did and Ive never been happier in my life
Randomly found this and immediately recognized the face. This man was part of one of the best TV shows ever made: The Wire. If you know, you know. And now I know what a great artist he is! Thank you Steve and Tiny Desk
Steve being alive, still here and vital will always feel like God blessed him and in turn all of us. Let us give thanks... he’s a treasure and God is merciful. Steve is proof.
I've wanted to be a musician every since I can remember, but Mr. Earle made me want to be a songwriter; I love his music, his voice, and his glasses! haha
So talented, so underrated in the mainstream. But so are all the real true musical geniuses. Never here them on the radio. Yes I will confess he is my favorite liberal. I have very different political idea's than him but I love this man. Peace be with you my brother.
I have been a fan since i first heard him in the Copperhead Road days, but I had no idea then of the depth and power of his songwriting. One of our generation’s most evocative and insightful bards. I keep rediscovering songs and relistening and loving the work.
Steve Earle will always be one of my absolute favorite artists, seen him 3 times in Thunder Bay Ontario. Hope to see him in the states soon. Love his talent one of the very best ever.
Steve Earle, what an amazing and talented guy...a REAL musician!! .....singin' Jock-A-Mo....love that tune by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford or Sugar Boy and His Cane Cutters...RIP "Sugar Boy" (10/12/1934-9/15/2012).
Frendlee Calvert Look up the meaning of "chaque amour fi na ne". It has been often sung as "Jock-a-mo", but the french meaning is quite cool. "All our love made it happen." ;)
Steve's songs, more often than not, really resonate for me. Nothing boring about them, or him ... but then again, I love to listen and learn; share another human being's perspective and experience. Good storytellers usually have my attention, despite any possible character flaws.
So true. Something about Steve Earle I find intriguing. Storytelling has to be a large part of it. A lot of people slag him off. Not sure how you can have the audacity.
New Orleans? Why do we live New Orleans? I have lived in New Orleans for 30 yrs. I fell in love with the culture,in love with the fact that every neighborhood has a personality. The people are good, the people are all on the most part proud to be from this Great city..This city wont wash away!
A few years ago while attempting to buy a friend a t shirt at the house of blues in New Orleans I found the gift shop was closed. Right about that time I noticed a flyer for Steve. When I asked when he was playing there the guy said about 5 minutes ago. I turned to my friends and told them they were welcome come with me but I was going. They left, I saw Steve alone. Which was cool because I thoroughly enjoyed it.
i still remember it was "leaves of grass" with edward norton that introduced me to Mr Earle. the song was called lonely are the free and i was an instant fan.
Wow man he wrote The mountain and Copperhead Road back then , amongst a real bunch of other truly great tunes that makes your knowledge limited or your statement misinformed or downright loon
It's pretty dire straits in the music world today; And if it's real' music, in today's world of everything but, i don't care I love it or can learn to love it. because of the connection between the writer, singer, and song and what emotions that ensues.
I was fortunate enough to hear Steve read an excerpt from his book in Readings in Melbourne. Then later that same night saw him perform a memorable show at the Corner Hotel. He lifts the soul and gives hope when hope seems futile. The last of honest troubadours. A storyteller without spin. Who could begrudge that??
Recently re-watched The Wire and had no idea this guy was a musician. He plays a recovering addict in the show and from the looks of it he mainly plays himself.
The acting is just a side thing, and he is the first to say he played a version of himself on The Wire. It was his first acting gig. David Simon is a fan, and asked him to play the part. He is a recovering addict, with 20 years last fall. Check out his music. though, which is where he really excels. His late 90s albums I Feel All Right and El Corazon are good places to start.
Yes he mainly played himself in The Wire. Thank God for that. Who else would one play? BTW: Check out his song about mining and miners. Levon covered it perfectly on one of his albums. Could be the best miners’ song in recent memory. Anyone ever catch Steve giving the middle finger salute to the Blue Angels as they flew over Golden Park during Hardly Strictly? Good memories!
again.....i LOVE everything i watch of Steve's......hope u get back to cincinnati in '13 it was awesome to see u in Aug....and the pic that guy took of me with u LOL makes me smile everyday thanks
This French guy discovered Steve Earle with his Wire's performance (and his song they play at the end of season 2 GOD it fits so well with the final scene... without connecting both at the time), love the man!
Got into Steve earle after the twin towers. I had heard him through my dad but never really appreciated it. This man is amazing and the messages through his music is truly amazing.
Always enjoy listenin' to Steve sing, tell stories an' vent his political spleen. He a damn fine writer an' also a good interpreter of other writers. I've been singin' Copperhead Road in my set, most gigs for twelve years now havin' heard it, loved it, learned to play mandolin because of it an' went on to gig it. He sure ain't no saint an' I don't agree with some of his views but this video was put up for it's music. Save your arguments for a video where Steve Is soundin' off. CHEERS !!
Impressive how he goes into an alt. tuning, changing the tuning all his strings before his final song. Not very many professional players do this, most would just have a 2nd guitar all tuned up and ready to go...
It's because he's nervous and needs to fidget, it gives him time to tell a story between songs. They say he has 132 guitars, he could easily set one down and pick another up.
To capture the moment. Even if you don't have a skilled camera person it is worthwhile. (I am no professional, but I still take vacation photos.) I am glad they filmed it whatever the quality, and NPR is non-profit, so budget is limited.
+Big Red I have seen him many times, and am pretty sure that he is one of the least likely artists to suffer stage fright. He is extremely outgoing. He says it was "debris from a Cobb salad" shifting.
Steve Earle is one of the last great American troubadours. Conscience and conviction. No compromise, no excuses. Thanks Steve.
Mr. Earle is the perfect example of using what you are given and making something tremendous out of it. He goes to show that you can either let your struggles define you, or you can use them to shape you into something better. Good on ya Mr. Earle :)

Steve's mistakes are just as beautiful as his masterpieces. This man has taught me so much.
Mistakes are a learning tool. Most performers would have never let that first song be a take, I will say though, he's an honest man.
I almost ashamed it's taken me this long to understand Steve Earl's place in music history.
At 55... Ditto, bro.
@@greenrockyroad3845 ADHD and 30+ years of diving down music history rabbit holes.
42-same!
I bought steve and dwights first records when they came out back in the 80s. It was important for me to hear new country music from 2 guys that actually knew what the hell it was, is and will always be in it's truest form: honest.
Steve Earle is simply a genius.
Such a pleasure to see him perform "Every Part of Me". To watch one of the legends, the outlaws, just bear his soul....an absolute pleasure
Just saw this genius last Thursday. 30th anniversary of the Copperhead Road album. They played the entire album from beginning to end and then some exit zero and guitar town and more. Glad I was able to see him.
Such great material, each of those albums.
Thank you Steve! Your music mean so much to me!❤😊

A guitar,a voice, S. Earle, Great NPR Sound! What else can one ask for! Stay Safe Everyone!
Steve Earle is fantastic. Live shows are excellent too. Great songs, sung well.
Never heard the first one. Instant favorite. Love him. Never fails to convey the heart of any song. God bless
One of the most memorable concerts of my entire lifetime was Steve during his Copperhead Road Tour in little old Victoria BC
Great timing, Steve carried a terrific band.
So talented, so underrated in the mainstream. But so are all the real true musical geniuses. Never here them on the radio. Yes I will confess he is my favorite liberal. I have very different political idea's than him but I love this man. Peace be with you my brother.
This music goes straight into your heart
this guy goes through more incredible and major changes than anyone I know, and comes out of them greater than before...
I love this guys playing style, how he gets that funky deep sounding hammer on, on that G chord is beyond me. I cant replicate it
hammer on F# and slide to G :)
Chords for waitin in the sky anyone?
I have been a fan since i first heard him in the Copperhead Road days, but I had no idea then of the depth and power of his songwriting. One of our generation’s most evocative and insightful bards. I keep rediscovering songs and relistening and loving the work.
Unvarnished and remarkable. What a voice.
He's still hammering hits ! Love you Steve
Everything he says and does is captivating.
Steve Earle will always be one of my absolute favorite artists, seen him 3 times in
Thunder Bay Ontario.
Hope to see him in the states soon. Love his talent one of the very best ever.

A real master...a lot of beauty and a lot of heart...a real guide
Loved him in the Wire and Treme and love his music. Good playing Player
he's right up there with one of the great american singer/songwriters. Thankfully he got off the slippery slop to inspire so many in so many ways
New Orleans? Why do we live New Orleans? I have lived in New Orleans for 30 yrs. I fell in love with the culture,in love with the fact that every neighborhood has a personality. The people are good, the people are all on the most part proud to be from this Great city..This city wont wash away!
This reinforces my commitment to Steve's music. I have followed him for years...but seeing him raw like this...man. Steve...you had me at "."
Peace...
Steve Earl is still the man..
Yes! have you heard his new album Terraplane?
No I have'nt Pam but I will check it out thanks for the heads up..
NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE WOODIE GUTRIE NEVER DIED
Amazing how much energy he has at that age

As real as his music.. Thank you Steve.
outstanding, talented guy! Always love his music
Mr. Earle, you surely do take my breath, bring a tear, & leave a warmth in my soul
Hello, how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
Thank you Steve for "This City". Absolutely beautiful and so true. From a New Orleanian.
"walkin on the water, never did learn to swim!! great line, great simple country tune, thanks mr. Earle!
Steve was in NZ and loved his stuff for years
This guy is cool. I would love to see him live some day.
A few years ago while attempting to buy a friend a t shirt at the house of blues in New Orleans I found the gift shop was closed. Right about that time I noticed a flyer for Steve. One of our generations great troubadours. Thanks Steve!
i still remember it was "leaves of grass" with edward norton that introduced me to Mr Earle. the song was called lonely are the free and i was an instant fan.
Wonderful upload, thanks. SE has evolved from basic eye candy in the 80s to a truly great man. I never get tired of his music.
Hahaha . If you think it wasn’t until after the 80’s that Steve found himself musically.
Wow man he wrote The mountain and Copperhead Road back then , amongst a real bunch of other truly great tunes that makes your knowledge limited or your statement misinformed or downright loon
He was eye candy?
Eye candy? That’s an odd description. Perhaps it was your own ear that was tin? Go back and listen to the first three albums.
It's pretty dire straits in the music world today; And if it's real' music, in today's world of everything but, i don't care I love it or can learn to love it. because of the connection between the writer, singer, and song and what emotions that ensues.
beautiful guitar... tone from heaven... (thumbs up !)
Wow! That was wonderful! Jackson Browne sounds as GOOD as ever(in my opinion). I LOVE these songs...especially the last one.
He was my first concert when I was little. I saw him three times from the time I was 7-12.
What a lovely straight up guy Steve is.
Ol' Steve has this way...unique, nobody can sing it better...
This City is too beautiful for the terrible events that New Orleans suffered
Love it! I remember when this first posted, great then and great now!

His character is Walon: “Service to others is the only thing that keeps the self-loathing to a minimum.”
I am that nerd, revisiting Earle's genius. I vote our nation's Poet Laureate.
I love these Tiny Desk Concerts, and what can you say about Steve Earl - Living Legend...!
Awesome from start to finish.. A polished musician ✊🏼
Wonderful man, wonderful music so authentic.
he was halfway through the second song, and I was bawling. guess we all have our demons.
Yeah, I get you. It completely tore me apart as well...

I met him after a show in April. It was great!
You guys need to get Steve back to do another one of these
Look what I found one of America's greatest songwriters terrorizing some guy's office.
Good Job Mr. Earle!!
That was so good!!
This French guy discovered Steve Earle with his Wire's performance (and his song they play at the end of season 2 GOD it fits so well with the final scene... without connecting both at the time), love the man!
I was hitting like button hundred times !!!!!!!
A real man!!!! I like him in the tv show "The Wire"
What is there about this man? I can listen to his guitar for hours
well, he did learn from two of the greatest singer songwriters to ever walk the earth!
I could listen to him talk for hours too.
Hello there, how's it going? It's so cool to meet you here!
this guy is seriously incredible even with the screw ups in the song. But man he writes true honest songs that you can connect with.
Got into Steve earle after the twin towers. I had heard him through my dad but never really appreciated it. This man is amazing and the messages through his music is truly amazing.
Hello, how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here.
Yet another great Texas musician
Happy 65th Birthday Steve Earle
Steve Earle is magic.
I love Steve Earle....
Always enjoy listenin' to Steve sing, tell stories an' vent his political spleen. He a damn fine writer an' also a good interpreter of other writers. I'm a huge fan and I don't want to judge, yet, Steve's off here.
I love this song, mi cantante favorito.
Pero su mejor rola “Goodbye” no la toc’o!!!! Sacrilegio!!!
so good
Impressive how he goes into an alt. tuning, changing the tuning all his strings before his final song. Not very many professional players do this, most would just have a 2nd guitar all tuned up and ready to go...
all folk musicians do that, it's just the rockers and pop-guys who are either too lazy, or incompetent
It's because he's nervous and needs to fidget, it gives him time to tell a story between songs. They say he has 132 guitars, he could easily set one down and pick another up.
would love to meet this guy my parents listened to him
I know the feeling, my mother raised me on Steve Earle's music!
Play the Wabash Cannonball.
Classic TVZ
LOL. He don't know the fuckin' Wabash Cannonball!!
I love Townes!
unrated comment!
LOL I imagine after he told the story, there's someone every other gig yelling at him to play wabash cannonball haha
Amazing Music, greetings from germany!
love this guy..
To capture the moment. Even if you don't have a skilled camera person it is worthwhile. (I am no professional, but I still take vacation photos.) I am glad they filmed it whatever the quality, and NPR is non-profit, so budget is limited.
i luv. street raw... nice vid. . thank you!!!!
I absolutely adore Steve Earle as well. His slip-up on the first song makes me wonder if he suffers from stage fright.
+Big Red I have seen him many times, and am pretty sure that he is one of the least likely artists to suffer stage fright. He is extremely outgoing. He says it was "debris from a Cobb salad" shifting.
This Citys a great tune.
You the man, Steve.
Wonderful
