    I saw a program on large estates and the woman being interviewed said: "what most people forget when they see these homes is there was laughter here, there were children here." This completely changed the way I look at these estates. Imagine being a kid here. Playing hide-and-seek. Sliding down the huge banisters. Sliding down the halls in your socks. Kinda changes the tone, doesn't it? Now look at these homes again and see it through the eyes of eight year old you. Looks like fun. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

    I've been obsessed with this home since I visited it in 2005. I'm sure even more work has been done on the place since then! Thank you for sharing! I'm looking forward to part 2!

    An absolutely stunning home! It must have taken an army of people to run the place and to keep it clean. Looking forward to part 2. Thank you. Mary

    Have been a frequent visitor to Biltmore through the years more times than I can count... (Before it got so insanely expensive), and seen probably 95% of the entire residence at one time or another. This was an outstanding presentation and fantastic videography. Thanks for posting!

    I can still remember how this place smells from when my 6th grade class took a field trip there over thirty years ago. That was a great day!

    My Grandparent's home was a couple miles from Biltmore. I never saw it as a child but my wife and I would visit every time we visited until my Grandmother passed in 1995.

    3:39 - This room was the bedroom of Mason Verger, Hannibal Lecter‘s arch rival in the movie Hannibal.
    Dr. Lecter was residing in Italy at the time.

      Yes, my husband corrected me on this too! I wish there was a way for me to edit the video while uploaded, but there isn’t. Thanks for adding this to the comments. It was in the movie, just a different character’s bedroom! Thanks for watching!

      @@RagtopHistorian Thanks for the video, the Biltmore is a major piece of gilded age (victorian) history.
      FYI - The UA-cam channel 'This House' has some great content from this era.

    First visited in 1978 and unfortunately have not been back. I knew Marilyn Kaiser, who was the organist at All Soul’s Church.

    Biltmore finished in 1895. Just Amazing to think about and imagine. The working men in that time were so hard working and talented. Sad what’s going on today. Just sad 😞

    The organ GWV purchased never came to Biltmore, it went straight to All Souls and GWV wanted to find out from Florio if that was the one he should get Biltmore, there were many problems with All Souls oragn so it never happened, there is a cool book on this topic

    Mr. Vanderbilt tried to buy land for this home in Alexander County on Linney's mtn before he purchased this land. The owners of the land in Alex. County did not want to sell.

    Asheville was mr Vanderbilt second choice for biltmore. Burks Garden in Tazewell co Va was his first choice but could not built it there due to the railroad and expense of being it into the garden

    What was life like for the slaves who probably built the house and also worked as unpaid servants for the owners? Is there a record of the slaves owned by the family?

    • @RagtopHistorian
      @RagtopHistorian  3 місяці тому +1

      Slaves did NOT build this house. It was built in the 1890’s by skilled artisans and craftsmen who were paid well.and housed in a modern village built especially for Vanderbilt’s workers.
