- Опубліковано 22 вер 2024
- In his new book, CNN anchor and "60 Minutes" correspondent Anderson Cooper tells the story of the Vanderbilt family dynasty - from his great-great-great-grandfather, Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt, once the richest man in America who built his fortune through steamships and railroads, to his mother, socialite Gloria Vanderbilt. Cooper talks with correspondent Mo Rocca about how the wealth and privilege in his family tree marked succeeding generations.

I think Gloria deserves her own kudos here. She did make a fortune with those jeans. Women's accomplishments are too often brushed aside. She was in dire circumstances and she pulled a rabbit out of the hat.
And used her name brilliantly, as a marketing tool.
Facts. She deserves major credit for what she did with her denim brand. She was one of the first celebrities who used their fame to create a brand.
"Dire circumstances"...riiiiiiiight.
Let’s not be dramatic. She wasn’t in dire circumstances. Trading in your upper east side mansion for a smaller upper east side apartment isn’t dire in the least.
Oh please…. This was an 8 minute interview about a book. Why does she need a big spotlight? Does the absence of that spotlight mean he’s not acknowledging a woman’s achievement? Of course not. Read the damn book and then come back and comment whether her devoted son sells her short or not. My guess is you’ll have to retract your statement.
It's amazing to see how hard working and down to earth Anderson is, considering his family history. He could have tried to capitalize on the Vanderbilt name, but never did so. Such an honorable man.
I agree. I just love him.
an off the wall thought mr anderson cooper. is like the cartoon character that i like mr dudley do right. he rides backwards to move forward on a simple horse named "Horse" he deviated from the canadian lady niel fenwick. and because he is an american he chose what works for him and that was his male life partner. he also chose a different way to procreate with his genetic heritage. hats off i have learn from you concerning my family legacy since i am childless at this moment in time. if my sperm is viable i would love to see if i could procreate with god's blessings. anderson thank you for showing me a way that i never thought of before. keep up the good work my friend.

He's a sharp individual to have been able to recognize in his teens the importance of having a plan and working hard to execute that plan.
That's right. His mother managed to make her own fortune but what you wont read is that she lost it all. She was practically homeless. He's very perceptive and exploited some opportunities and made something of himself, defying the douchebaggery created by his ancestors.
I think it’s incredible that with all the fortune and tragedy, Anderson found his own way. Like them or not, this family helped to build America.
Held it back.
Yeah, NO.
Nah, he got to where he is because of his family and the subsequent connections.

The Vanderbilt family is not different from many wealthy families around the world. The old saying goes. First generation makes it, second generation works it and third generation spends it. I don't think they were crazy. It just proves the point that if you never worked for it then there is no value to it.
I never heard that before!!! I love it and it is so true! My father started his own business in the 50’s then my brothers took it over and grew it even more now my nephews have it and their wives spend like drunken sailors!!! My father died many years ago and it kills me to watch these brats do this
Well the first gen was farmers working hard, then Cornelius was second gen that made the money and worked hard. Cornelius' son, The 3rd gen, William Henry, doubled the money. It was the next gen that spent it.
@@snikkerr1949 in terms of wealth Cornelius would be the first generation with the next generation expanding it and the following generation spending it hence why Copper's mom had a relatively smaller inheritance. He basically started building his wealth after quitting school at 11.
@CBS good morning what is this some kind of code??
@@MJ-wrty but doesnt that make Anderson the brat in this analogy since he dkdnt work for the money? But he does work for a living..
My Son received an award at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI. We went to an incredible dinner at The Breakers, one of the Vanderbilt’s homes. Incredible evening!
Every time friends or family visit, that's the one they want to visit. I finally gave up waiting for others to see other mansions with ne and went alone or on Free Day. Now, I park it at a table with a book at the new café while I wait.

Anderson Cooper is one of the few celebrities I'd like to meet. My mother passed away shortly before his & I could feel that dude's pain through the TV. The look on his face when he talks about his son is similar to the look on my face when I talk about my daughter, even now that she's 30. Seems like a one of the good guys
I’ve met him once in a local gay club after his show with Andy Cohen, he was pretty gracious, I shook his hand and told him thank you for all that you do in the broadcasting journalism world. As someone studying and working towards going into Journalism as a career, he and Andy Cohen both were pleasant, it’s a moment I’ll never forget... My sincerest condolences on the loss of your beloved mom, I too lost a parent my dad, it’s a loss that never goes away. 💛

I am thrilled that the NC mansion Biltmore is still owned by the family and is open as a museum/ tourist attraction. It’s a glimpse in to a bygone period of history! Like Anderson, it is self- supporting and pays its own bills! I live in NC and we are proud of being home to the largest privately owned home in America!
An the 'wealth' in artifacts in the Biltmore mansion is STAGGERING! Napoleon's chess set and games table is priceless, let alone the Albrecht Dürer material...just to name a few. After completing the mansion tour, I recall standing in one of the gardens and thinking this is where President's were bought and sold. There's a library at Biltmore that is my happy place. Literally. I've memorized every part of that room so I can call up the image when I'm stressed out. The fireplace, the red upholstery, and the miles of books. When we remodeled the third floor of our house, we ripped everything out, put in built-in bookcases, and did the whole thing in red. Thanks, Biltmore, for being beautiful!
I was a child/teenager the last time I toured Biltmore, but is that the two-story one that when you enter from the main entrance to the home is kind of in a bit and to the left/towards the beginning of the regular tour? When I was visiting they were filming "Hannibal" that day in that room and happened to be on a production break and a docent person let us peek our heads in and there was Anthony Hopkins in his creepiest form, just casually standing in that library. It creeped me out terribly and the rest of the tour was a nightmare for me as I felt like I was in a giant haunted house or something lol.
@@llamaskank I have no idea where in the house it is, because believe it or not, I've never been there. I've memorized the entire room from photographs. I should probably go visit, but to be honest, I'm almost afraid to go. What if it's a disappointment, you know? What if it's smaller in person, or the colors aren't "right"? Still if it's in "Hannibal," it probably looks great. I'm definitely going to check that out :)
@spirals 73 That's awesome!! People in that region of the Carolinas are very well known for their craftsmanship and handiness! A great-uncle of mine was a tutor for the Vanderbilt children at Biltmore.
Anderson encompasses all things great; his mother was so blessed to have a son like Anderson, and now his son Wyatt is even more blessed to have a father like him. A very thoughtful, cautious and wise human being from a very early age; only the grace of God can prepare one to be like that 🥰👍🏾🙏🏾
I agree with everything, except for the part that relates to God, which does not exist.
I remember this wonderful story. Gloria was the "poor little rich girl" she had a wonderful nanny that she was very close to and loved dearly. I think she went to live with other rich family members in Florida. Her cousin was a star in television and movies. For such an unstable upbringing even though very wealthy, Gloria did very well for herself. We all loved her jeans. She was quite beautiful too! That's is why Anderson is such a looker. He does not seem to be spoiled and obnoxious. You go Anderson. What a great American story!
Commodore!
Sounds like you'd better get Anderson's book and then get your facts straight.
To Gloria's credit :
She did make her own fortune with her jeans - they are the only jeans I will wear -- because I am tall and they fit well. At the same time and in context and again --- kudos to Gloria --- women of her generation were culturally shielded around all aspects of money and knew nothing about money --- so good for Gloria ---- she made her own millions. Anderson --- you work very hard but your mother was never expected to ---- it wasn't "done." I hold Gloria Vanderbilt in the highest regard and with the utmost respect. A great power of example for young women!

They are good jeans all right.
The fabrics she designed were pretty fabulous too.

People can be dismissive of Old Money as shallow and superficial sometimes, but they forget that all Old Money was New Money, and New Money had to start as no money at one point. There’s always a good story somewhere there.
If you can believe it, early rich New Yorkers looked down on the Vanderbilts because they were considered New Money.
They were new money. No titles, didn’t come from aristocracy. They were farmers.
Yep. And his ancestors had to work to make that money. It was earned.

Nobody's perfect. Such a remarkable family history. Kept a lot of folks working and food on their tables.
The Vanderbilt family are a prime example of the proverb “rags to rags in three generations” - the first generation makes money, the second spends it, and the third sees none of the wealth.
If you read their story, the second generation, the commodores son, doubled the fortune and then some. Your statement about them is not entirely true. Gloria’s grandfather died early of drink and debauchery. His grandmother was a twin, and her sister had affair with the Duke of Windsor. It’s a very, very interesting story.
Probbly for the best if Anderson was to have all that power
A ridiculous statement in this case...this family didn't start in rags and hasn't ended that way.
But the second generation of Vanderbilts, exemplified by William Henry Vanderbilt, increased the fortune from $100 million to over $200 million. The third generation saw -- and spent -- plenty of that wealth. On such houses as Biltmore, The Breakers and Marble House, to name a few of the most extravagant and costly houses ever built in America. I don't believe any of them wore rags.
@@janet1717 Gloria's father, not grandfather, died of drink. His sister-in-law, Thelma Furness was the twin sister of Gloria's young mother. Thelma did indeed have an affair with the then-Prince of Wales, later Duke of Windsor. It's an even more interesting story if you can get your facts straight.

I always knew "the Vanderbilts" were part of American history. But, as a kid growing up in Dutchess County, NY, in terms of something that I could see and touch, we had the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY, that was so impressive. And yet it was described by an architectural historian as "modest" for a Vanderbilt house. Oh my!
The real value is the acres of riverfront property that house sits on.
My paternal Grandmother was employed by the Vanderbilts in Newport, RI. There were times when she had to travel to their other places or risk loosing her job. With four children and no other means of support she had no good options. Anderson Cooper is gifted, remarkable, resilient BECAUSE HIS MOTHER WAS THE EXAMPLE. Unfortunately, his dad died unexpectedly and Gloria Vanderbilt kept picking up the pieces of a very troubling life of LOSS. And don't get me wrong, EVERYBODY is going to pass away, but very few people can handle the unfortunate trials that she had as a young child being kidnapped herself; her husband died young at 50; her other song committed suicide, her shrink and personal attorney STOLE her money and even though she sued and won the case, she never received the restitution due her. And so you see, even the very rich are marked with bad times. As for her jeans, some of us are working with too much to wear them. But she was CLASSY and INSPIRATIONAL.
And therefore Anderson could not be any less FABULOUS! I love that platinum hair of his. Congratulations to you Anderson Cooper for a life (so far) well lived.
