1920's Christmas Traditions in Atlanta, GA. Letters to Santa and Reindeer Rest!
One hundred years ago, Christmas was just as anticipated as it is now, by children and adults alike. Around Thanksgiving, the Atlanta Journal would ask for children to send in their letters for Santa Claus to not only be published in the paper but to be flown to Santa Claus at the North Pole! Rich’s didn’t have the Pink Pig yet, but they had sales galore to accommodate all levels of financial ability. Furs and finery for the richest of citizens to handkerchiefs and hosiery for everyday Atlantans to put under their trees. Refrigerators and radio sets were at the top of any wish list back then.
Reindeer Rest was home to Santa Claus and was located at the intersection of Gilmer and Cortland Streets, now the location of Hurt Park. It was an annual tradition for years for Santa to arrive there with his reindeer. It was open for school field trips and weekend visits with parents.
Merry Christmas from me to you!

Переглядів 4363 місяці тому
On September 27th, 2024 a category 4 hurricane, Helene made landfall at the big bend of Florida in the early morning hours. It swiftly made its way through Georgia impacting it and several states. It dumped over 12 inches of rain on metro Atlanta, including Fayette County’s historic Starr’s Mill causing unprecedented flooding. This video documents that flooding.
Atlanta’s SPACE AGE Aluminum home trend! It only lasted four years! Where and when?
Переглядів 1024 місяці тому
You may have heard of Lustron homes, but have you heard of Knox homes? In 1959 Atlanta was in need of thousands of starter homes for young families, mostly veterans and their families moving to the Atlanta suburbs. These veterans could use their G I Bill to purchase a home with no money down! Knox Homes built several neighborhoods of mostly aluminum homes-marketed as sturdy and low maintenance....
Bennet’s Mill in Fayetteville, GA. A killing in 1907, and Atlanta’s Coney Island?

Now Franks at the Old Mill restaurant, this old grist mill in Fayetteville, GA has gone through some history! In 1907 it was the scene of a killing between two brothers, descendants of the original builder and owner. It later became Atlanta’s playground, a “Coney Island”drivable by car or accessible by train. The area has changed a lot over the years and also changed very little. The lake is st...
Major Update to the Appling Sword Story! Preserving history for future generations!

The story of the Col. Daniel Appling Sword is nothing short of amazing! It was posthumously awarded to Georgia’s own hero of the War of 1812, Col. Daniel Appling by the citizens of Georgia. It hung outside the Governor’s office at the State Capitol until it was loaned to the Jamestown Exposition in 1907. It vanished. However, it wasn’t forgotten. Over the one hundred plus years many people, inc...

Have you ever found a treasure at a yard sale, antique shop, or thrift store that you were drawn to and knew it was so special you had to know it’s full story? It happens to me often, but this time it happened in Chattanooga, Tennessee while Joe and I were on one of those short “Let’s go see some fall color” trips. I saw this framed block print of two Siamese cats and immediately grabbed it! I ...

Big Spring Park-FULL of history! Trail of Tears, Tuscumbia, Alabama

By 1819 the town of Ococaposa (Cold Water) was incorporated, and later changed to Tuscumbia to honor the Chief. So much history is here! Being on the trail of tears, some of the history is sad. My local favorite place to camp and chill. I'm creek and Cherokee with some German and Irish. I'm a mixed pup. 😂
I live on Jonesboro Road near Nash Farms. I found a horse shoe from the Civil War in my yard.
Blant lie. At that time African American were selling their blueprint it was a black man
I was there. Hendrix started his set with the Star Spangled Banner. Fireworks going off at the same time. Unforgettable event. I would have thought more than 600,000 people but it was hard to estimate a sea of young people.
Enabling immoral druggies and layabouts to soil your property and violate the local community is hardly a noble or community minded act.

They have new owners and how cleaned the place up and updated the menu and it's headed into the right direction I love it
Thanks for the update!
What a fun video. Those letters to Santa are so sweet. I love hearing from the little ones. Thank you for making and sharing this video. Mary
Thank you, Mary! I have been offline lately due to some husband health challenges. It’s nice to get a video back on the channel. It’s good to see you still sticking with me! Robyn
@ I’m sorry about your husband hopefully he’s on the upswing. I love your historical content, keep ‘em coming!

Thanks for posting this. One of my great grandfathers died in this battle, and his son (another great grandfather who was 16 at the time) lived through it to go on and fight at the battle of honey hill in South Carolina. Hoping to make a trip there soon. He’s buried at a confederate cemetery near there.
Thank you for watching and sharing your family’s sacrifice in that battle.
I use to live there, They searched for a place that look Greece and Nashville was it.
I've lived here my whole life and have never been to her house 😢 i guess i was sick or just didn't want to go when we had field trips there. Absolutely loved the 3 videos of my hometown area! I found your channel just a few hours ago by searching info on The Dungeness ruins! I love your channel!! ❤ I hope to be able to travel and see some of these places one day! *I subscribed ❤
Thank you so much! Welcome to my channel and I look forward to reading your comments on other videos!
My old hometown. My dad married a german lady there. Inhave family there today. At the end of the video, you were standing in front of my house down that alley. I wished you would have spun around. Still, awesome video. Made me smile. I lived in that little town f9r probably 7 years
Wow! I wish I had shown your house! I love that town so much! My ancestor was born there. I love that it hasn’t changed in over two hundred years! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@RagtopHistorian i loved it. My dad was stationed at hanau, and other places in Germany, but we always lived in hochstadt. My brother and sister are still there. Or close by.
Did Carson's ancestors arrive from Scotland/ Ireland ?
I’m not sure. I would guess that’s the case based on his style of music, however. Thanks so much for watching!
Wow
Great video and lovely house but the kellers were wealthy..thats why they hired Ann sullivan at their home .the beauty and quality of furniture and bedrooms show they could pay annie Sullivan ..Helen was lucky in a way to be raised in a rich family .Not all deafblind children were raised that way..in lovely houses. Some families were poor and they sent their handicaped children in institutes like at boston .For instance Laura bridgman s parents were poor and sent her at perkins like many other children... Helen was privileged and she and Ann could travel and see many places..
I don’t see your point.
😂 we built a replica using the same material the Greeks did during The Great Depression. That's what any Christian nation would do, build a temple to a pagan god immediately after WWI 😅 we built these temples in EVERY city at the same time. Why are all the old banks, post offices and other government buildings all Greek architecture?
This was so moving - thanks so much for investigating this story and making this video <3
Thank you for watching! I felt his story needed to be told.
And Sullivan county hasn’t changed 😂 I dare anyone to be different and have a different opinion then others the whole county not like you still in 2024
The 'house'.
id like to suggest the opic for a 3rd installment of this series.... Servants corridors.
That is a wonderful suggestion! We hope to get back there soon. Thanks so much for watching and the great idea for another video!
I'll take it !
Wow, I am thankful that the mill is still there! Nice video work!
Thank you, Kevin!
I didn't realize there was that much flooding in that part of Ga. Helene really slammed southeast Ga and in some areas it might be weeks before they get power back. From Dublin to Savannah the damage is heart breaking.
Dave, it is very heartbreaking. I have a friend in South Georgia that can’t find fuel to run her generator. We were spared so much of the damage. While we are thankful we are sad about others suffering.
Great video, Robyn! It's hard to believe that the mill can change so quickly! Thanks for the historical record you are keeping!
Thanks, Dianne! That old mill is my happy place and I love it so much! I was very worried the water would reach the inside of the mill and damage the foundation, but I don’t think that happened.
Oh NO! I hope as the water recedes they find no damage to the beautiful mill and surrounding areas! Keep us posted. Hopefully you all are ok. Mary
Thank you, Mary! That old mill is tough as nails! If you watch the movie, “Sweet Hime Alabama” with Reese Witherspoon, Starr’s Mill is in it! It is the glass shop in the movie. You can’t miss it! The mill will be fine. The water came close to the building this time. I have never seen the water that high before. We are doing fine, we had 15 inches of rain at our house, but thankfully no flooding or damage.
@@RagtopHistorian I’ll check out the movie. That’s a LOT of rain! Thank God you’re ok.
@maryg.249 thanks, Mary! Other parts of Georgia fared worse than we did!
Do they give house tours there? Are visitors allowed in the house at all? I plan on being in that area next week so I might be able to visit it.
Yes! Their tours are wonderful! I highly recommend it.

My Grandmother was from Buttermilk bottom. My whole family is born and raised in Atlanta. I never really knew where exactly it was until a few years ago. But I remember her talking about it. Good story.
Thanks so much for watching! It’s so sad that the history of this historic neighborhood is largely forgotten. Google the song about Buttermilk Bottom as well. I would have included it in the video but I couldn’t because of copyright issues. It’s part of the history as well. Thanks again!
Both of my grandparents on Daddy’s side are buried here. We are the Barnwell and Goldsmith family. 8th generation Atlantan’s. Currently, I am 80 years of age. 9-20-2024.
I think a lot of the anger at Max was fueled by bigoted ant i-hippy sentiment none of those people are remembered by history but Max is 👍
@Ragtop Historian It is my understanding that the grave of Mary Phagan can be found by entering the gate on West Atlanta St. that is closest to Sandy Plains St. Then you take the third trail to the left and then look for first the Georgia Historical marker and then the black marker to the right of Little Mary's headstone. Is this true?
Wow! I haven’t been there in a couple of years now. I will have to go back and check, but I bet you are correct! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@RagtopHistorian You're welcome. There is a reason I asked. I am older and my health isn't good. It is important to me to visit Mary's grave and pay my respects while I am still able. This might not come to pass in this time frame, but, ideally speaking, I'd like to go in the first week of November. That is something that Catholics do in that time frame. It's my hope to, say somethings to Mary, pray the Rosary at Mary's grave, and then Bless the grave with Holy Water. This last one might be pushing the envelope a bit, but I'd like to identify take her a flower for her grave. I've watched, and rewound, several UA-cam videos trying to get a feel or a good idea of where the grave is.
God bless you! I hope you get to go and find her grave! Robyn
This isn't particularly accurate. Max did get a lot of heat before the festival from neighboring farms and townspeople, but the entire town pitched in when they found out there was a shortage of food, with townspeople getting together to make sandwiches by the thousands, making hard boiled eggs etc, anything they could get to the kids on the field. After the festival things settled back to normal for the town, and many enjoyed the notoriety afterwards, sold Woodstock "mementos" etc. Max had a vacation home in the Florida Keys that they went to every year. He decided to retire after a long career in farming (the Woodstock field was his alfalfa field...feed for his dairy cows) and retired to his home in the Keys. He did die young, which is sad, but it wasn't the neighbors or "the stress of Woodstock" that made that happen, and he wasn't "forced to sell". He was a hard-working man who decided he'd had enough and wanted to retire. But such is the internet, that folks will believe whatever is presented to them, and other folks will present information as truth without doing their full research. In the end, Max will be remembered in history as the man who made Woodstock possible, and the entire Woodstock Generation remembers him to this day. Peace and Love. :-)
Thanks for the comment. My research was compiled from contemporary newspaper articles from the period. Townspeople were interviewed and quoted for the articles. I am sure the townspeople helped feed the attendees. I also have no doubt Yazgur took a lot of flack from the same said townspeople. The fact is it was history and he helped make it happen. I hope my video comes across as being favorable to him, as I see him as a hero. Thanks again for watching and adding to the story! Robyn
We are in Quebec city right now. Just walked by the Frontenac and wanted to know more about its role with World War II. Your video was helpful. Thank you so much great production. I really hope
Enjoy your trip! We were there exactly a year ago! If you have time take the tour of the hotel! Thanks so much for watching!
Is that the original paint? Looks like it was repainted at some point. I own the exact same truck with 14k original miles on it pulled out of a barn.
Hi! No, not original paint. I think it was originally green! Thanks so much for watching! I bet your truck is cool!
I need to make a video for you. Do you still have the truck?
Barbara and I never knew that. Interesting.
Thanks, Pat! There are a couple of those homes in Peachtree City by the lake. Knox invested in the new city for a brief moment, then he moved on.
I found some of the Forest Park homes, but where are the Cobb ones?
Gene, the ones I am able to find are Briarwood in Marietta, off Roswell Road (Amanda Drive); Timberly, off South Cobb Drive (Cherokee Road); and Gordon Woods near Mableton. They may be a few more, but that’s all I can find. Thanks so much for watching!
@@RagtopHistorian Thanks so much! Lustrons they are not, but add them to the list of mid-century prefabs nonetheless. Now if only we could find some Cliff May prefabs in Georgia (nearest ones in Memphis at last check).
Now I need to research those! I love this stuff! Thanks, Gene! Robyn
How very fascinating. I’d never heard of those types of homes. I’ve heard of sears catalog homes, but not these. I’ll have to ask my husband if he’s ever heard of them. He’s been in construction for over 40 years, surely he’s heard of them. Mary
I’m curious if he has heard of them! They weren’t around long! Thanks, Mary!
Wow! That's interesting. Enjoyed seeing those old photos, my dad had a Studebaker like the one in the picture.
Thank you!
His mom Geraldine is buried there as well as the bassist from the band Berry Oakley also buried there. And now Gregg. 💔
I was there 62 63 64 I was with the 504th Airborne. I was the driver for the Batt. XO Lt. Col. Townsend. It was a long 3 yrs. As soon as I got back to the world I was sent to Vietnam. I had lots of fun and good times at good old Lee Barracks.

Great video…my mother’s family was from Rising Fawn and knew her. Very fond vivid childhood memories of going to the PlumNelly Art Show with my Mom on some beautiful October days…incredible scenery.
Oh, my! You made my day! I would have LOVED to have met her! I smile every time I pass the print she made, hung where I see it every day! Thanks so much for your kind comment, and for watching my video!
@@RagtopHistorian where did find/buy that? Love “block print”….you live in Chattanooga? Sounds like that area…PlumNelly was at her house on the Mountain….great memory.
@rodcoulter997 I live in the Atlanta metro. However, hubby and I were visiting Chattanooga and stopped by a local resale store. That’s where I fell in love with the print and took it home. I started researching her before we left Chattanooga and just had to visit her final resting place and honor her in a video!
