--------------------------------------------------
Step back into a time when the Vanderbilt name was synonymous with unmatched wealth and power in America.
The descendants of railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt lived a life of unfathomable luxury, spending lavishly and leaving behind legacies like the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, the largest private home in America, and prestigious Vanderbilt University.
Yet, the shimmering gilded aura that once encased the Vanderbilt legacy has dimmed over time, revealing the heavy burdens carried by its bearers.
Today, the extravagant Vanderbilt influence has been replaced by a more subdued presence.
Despite one of the most recognizable figures in news being a Vanderbilt descendant, many Americans are unaware of what became of this once towering family name.
In this episode, we dive deep into the secret history and the uncertain future of this iconic dynasty, focusing on its final heirs: Anderson Cooper and Carter Vanderbilt Cooper.
Chapter 1 introduces us to Anderson Cooper, a titan of American journalism and a Vanderbilt through his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.
Known for his commanding presence on CNN, Anderson not only brings news to the masses but also enjoys the finer things in life, courtesy of his substantial inheritance.
His real estate portfolio spans across prime locations, and his lifestyle includes yachts and private jets, signifying that some remnants of the Vanderbilt opulence continue.
Yet, Anderson approaches his wealth with a mix of modern sensibility and Vanderbilt extravagance, often downplaying the extent of his fortune.
This chapter also delves into the poignant story of Anderson’s brother, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, whose tragic death marked a somber chapter in the Vanderbilt narrative.
Raised in the lap of luxury, the pressures and expectations of their heritage weighed heavily on Carter, culminating in his untimely demise-a stark reminder of the personal costs that can accompany great wealth.
In Chapter 2, we explore the origins of the Vanderbilt fortune, established by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who transformed from a ferry operator to a transportation mogul.
His investments laid the foundations for a family that would become synonymous with American elite.
His descendants expanded this legacy through ventures like the Biltmore Estate and philanthropic efforts like the founding of Vanderbilt University.
Yet, with grandeur came complexity, as the Vanderbilt children grappled with maintaining their fortunes and social standing.
The narrative continues with the story of Gloria Vanderbilt, Anderson and Carter's mother, who faced her own set of challenges.
From a highly publicized and tumultuous custody battle over her inheritance to her multiple marriages and ventures into the arts and fashion, Gloria’s life was a testament to the Vanderbilt spirit of resilience and reinvention.
Finally, the episode examines how the Vanderbilt legacy has influenced Anderson’s own life and career.
His journalism is often informed by his personal experiences with loss and privilege, allowing him to approach stories with empathy and depth.
As a father, Anderson aims to pass on the values of resilience and integrity to his children, ensuring that the Vanderbilt legacy continues, albeit in a more grounded and thoughtful manifestation.
This episode not only uncovers the glitz and glamour of the Vanderbilt dynasty but also reveals the profound personal impacts of such a heritage.
It invites viewers to reflect on the transformation of American aristocracy and the enduring influence of one of the nation’s most storied families.
COMMENT: Which family’s “final heirs” would you like us to feature next on this channel? Perhaps this could be a new series we do here at Old Money Luxury where we feature the last descendants of a given family.
We already know about Anderson Cooper! Even though he's the most famous, and GREAT CLICK-BAIT, he's only one of the "final Vanderbilts".
What about the rest? If you truly wanted to produce an informative video, you'd have included them too.

@@BlackStump172 Really? You "feel sad" for an obscenely wealthy heiress, who never had to work a day in her life? Oh, and wouldn't be caught dead, talking to us "little people".
I feel sad, for you.
I have worn Gloria Vanderbilt "Amanda" jeans since they first came on the market. They fit me better than any other. I read her biography, "Poor Little Rich Girl" when it first came out. I fell in love with that child that didn't have a mother like I had. Anderson Cooper is my favorite journalist.
Poor Little Rich Girl was a very interesting movie about Barbara Hutton, the granddaughter and heiress to the vast FW Woolworth's fortune. Worthwhile watching.
Me too
I look for vintage GV jeans and enjoy the way they fit. They always can last for years.
I’ve been to the mansion in Rhode Island where she grew up as an only child.
As for Anderson, well…🙄
He's not a "journalist." He's a commentator, at best.
Anderson made a name for himself through his Journalism. He was a devoted son to his mother and dad, and had many tragedies in his life. He lives his life with his two sons and whatever 'luxuries' they have, the most precious thing Anderson has is his sons.
The documentary that Cooper made was beautiful , painful and very loving .

And just who are the mothers of Anderson's children ? The babies born of surrogacy lose out as well as the mothers.
What about Mr Cooper's children ? I'm sure him and his wife have had children by now ?

This documentary is well done. If anyone wants to delve further into the Vanderbilts, get Anderson Cooper’s book “Vanderbilt, the Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty”. This book is fascinating.
Cooper has 2 children.
George Vanderbilt's great grandchildren still own and run The Biltmore . A very interesting family.
Anderson Cooper deserves every penny of it!!! He works for it! He, too, has been my favorite journalist.
He’s a journalist? I thought he was a news reader.
Gloria nor her family lived at Biltmore House. George, the one who built it, was her great-uncle.
If you've never seen Biltmore, put it on your bucket list. I've visited several times and discover something I didn't know each time.
One of the direct descendents still lives there (even though it's open to the public), making it the largest private residence (175,000 square feet) in America.
I've been there and it's ridiculously huge. People had too much money
May her soul rest in peace. I can't begin to imagine Gloria Vanderbilt's life after watching her "baby" fall to his death. Thank God for sons like Anderson, who truly loved his mother in word and in deed. God bless you Anderson Cooper ❤
I didn't know her son died. 😢

There are more Vanderbilt heirs than Gloria Vanderbilt's four children.
Do tell please, elaborate...."Isa"
A neighbor of mine in Los Angeles was descended from them . Their house wasn't the Biltmore; it was about 4000 sq ft.
Do you think it's about the last who will inherit money that directly descended from Cornelius Vanderbilt? I don't know.

Anderson comes across as such a nice and genuine guy. It is so sweet how many times we see him holding his mother's hand in these photos. And, I'm glad that his mother got to experience one marriage where her money did not seem to be the focus, but a regular family life was.
His children have a bright future.

Well I went to Vanderbilt University….I would see Kirkland Hall outside the window of my freshman dorm….Kissam Hall (another Vanderbilt name). I often wondered about this man who’s statue greeted you as one turned into the main entrance of the University. Who was this man? What about this family once snubbed by the Astors only to be embraced later due to a clever move by Alva Vanderbilt? I have been to Biltmore, Hyde Park, Rough Point (initially a Vanderbilt home before Duke bought it) and all of the accessible Vanderbilt estates in Newport.
I very much enjoyed this program. I never thought much about Anderson Cooper until I saw his relationship with his Mother. I always liked Gloria Vanderbilt very much as, from what I know of her, she was quite a character. I admired how she handled her life after witnessing the death of her son….an experience that might have destroyed someone with less strength.

Gloria Vanderbilt had four sons. Two sets of sons with 2 different husbands. Anderson is one of three sons who survived her. Her two older sons are Leopold & Christopher Stokowski choose to live very private lives. This is not a secret, yet this narrator makes it seem like Anderson is her last son.

An interesting, "What if?" aside from the Vanderbilt story is that Gloria Vanderbilt's aunt Lady Thelma Furness. the twin sister of her mother (also named Gloria), was the romantic partner of the Duke of Windsor. At the time, he was the Prince of Wales and next in line to the British throne. When Lady Furness came back to America to support Gloria's mother in her trial, she told her friend, Wallis Simpson, "Take good care of the Little Man," i.e. the Prince of Wales. Had Lady Furness stayed in London is it possible that Anderson Cooper's great uncle may have been King Edward VIII, later the Duke of Windsor?

Very nice. I really enjoyed this one. I love history. Now that I've given up on my home country and now live abroad, it's history has a new found poingnant patina to it that I find quite agreeable.
I didn't know Gloria had 2 older sons, huh! I do like Anderson, he's such a class act.
Yes, he is!
Gloria was married 4 times. The older two boys are from her second marriage and Anderson and Carter are from her 4th marriage.
Very good, just a bit scattered in the beginning. The information that one of Gloria's sons did not inherit any money from his mother doesn't take into account that they had just reconciled and he had distanced himself for about 50+ years from her and the family for unknown reasons. I'm happy they reunited, but it seems from all I've read he wanted nothing to do with the Vanderbilt legacy, name or money and was happier living a quiet life behind the scenes.
I find it fascinating that not even a recent photo can be show of Christopher Stukowsi especially with a mother, Gloria and Father Leopold, being so famous. It's reported he works as a conductor under an assumed name to remain unknown. Sadly, Stan and Christopher didn't grow up with a Gloria who had learned how to properly parent until after she was remarried to Wyatt Cooper. Perhaps this made a big difference in how the dynamics were and they were often torn between two homes, the mother and father were divorced.
It is reported that her son, Leopold Stan Stukowsi inherited her most valuable assets, her property. Gloria left her personal property and it's assets to Stan whom one can easily find photos of and who was featured in the documentary:
Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper 2016
www.imdb.com/title/tt5275872/
I've always found Gloria very separate from most of the Vanderbilt of her era. Yes, she did live with her Aunt, but from the ages 10 to 17 a mere 7 years. Her 1st 10 years were with her distant mother and very close Nanny and Grandmother Morgan. Her Grandmother Morgan continued to play a role in her life during those years as did her mother whom she saw weekly and was distant and aloof.
Gloria Vanderbilt was a unique, strong, amazing and talented woman I admire. She raised good children and learned how to parent, something she never had and found a husband she felt safe with, her father died when she was 1 month old.
I hope her legacy lives on. I hope all of her 3 surviving children thrive in this world as life is not easy even if you have money and certainly when so much tragedy surrounds you.
Gloria wasn’t known for her motherly instincts. She cared more about high society. This video is one sided.
Thanks for posting this interesting history of Gloria Vanderbilt and her family. I had no idea she was right there and had to witness her son jumping from the balcony, any mother's worst nightmare.
I’m happy where I am in life. Don’t want wealth or notoriety. Sorry for their Tragedies. Bucket list is to see the roses in North Carolina. Glad to see Anderson getting on in life. Seems nice fella.
Thank you. This was so nicely presented. It seems to reflect the wonderful person Anderson Cooper truly is.

Thank you loved the story I did not know anything you told about. Thank you again.
I absolutely love Mr. Anderson for defending my countrymen, Philippines, against our corrupt politicians during the 2011 superstorm. He was one of the first to arrive in my country and was one of the first to hand out reliefs goods. But sadly, those relief goods from other countries were sold to the people after they left. Mountains of relief goods just rotted in the storage and the financial support that was supposed to be given to the people disappeared.
This was really good. Thank you so much for doing this series
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very well presented and made me admire this fam,ily so much more
It’s unfortunate the first 2 sons didn’t inherit anything. I understand not wanting the limelight but they were Gloria’s children too.
It's my understanding that none of her children inherited her fortune. Anderson has said before that Gloria told him she wasn't leaving him anything in her will because she wanted him to work for all he had and to create his own legacy and wealth.
I enjoyed this video. I learned a lot about the Vanderbilts.

How interesting! Anderson Cooper is one of my favorite ppl in US news reporting. Being Japanese and living in Japan now, I did not know that Anderson Cooper was a Vanderbilt!! Around 1995, I was a member of the 'Vanderbilt' YMCA -- did not know a thing about this family. The book seems interesting.
Fortune’s Children the fall of the House of Vanderbilt by Arthur Vanderbilt is a fabulous read. About all the decendents and how they squandered away their money after the Commodore passed. Fascinating
After watching this I am no wiser at all as to why so little money (relatively) is left out of the vast fortunes of the early Vanderbilts. What is the old saying? "Clogs to clogs in three generations?"
Because the earlier ones spent all of their inherited wealth.

My understanding was that Andersons mother left him no money. I am pretty sure I read an article to that effect.
She left it to him! (NOT that he needed it S he is very wealthy in his own right) but he was her only living heir as far as direct line descendants.....
I read that as well, l guess at the end she changed her mind.
The Final Vanderbilts is a misleading title, given the number of different branches of the family, I suspect there are now a very large number of Vanderbilt descendants. They probably prefer their anonymity, anyway, I know I would.
You are right. This video is misleading.

Although not directly associated with this family narrative, we might recall that the progenitor of it, non other than Reginald Claypoooole Vanderbilt ('Reggie' to his friends) himself, did serve as inspiration for the birth of Reginald van Gleason III, respectful and obedient son of Reginald Sedgwick van Gleason II and, Mildred ne Morgan van Gleason !!
And as with that very first Reggie -- he of the vaunted Claypooooles themselves -- the later van Gleason III too, was of that madcap playboy sort; he, after much work at it, having then attained the singular distinction of "hands-down PRIDE" of the New York 400 !!
All seriousness being aside now, Gloria Vanderbilt and Jackie Gleason (he having taken-on the near impossible and gargantuan task of 'being' van Gleason III) actually knew one another quite well!
Learning of this, I've always since wondered if it might have been she who gave Jackie Gleason the idea for his sort-of reenactment of Reginald Claypoooole, her father?
Perhaps it is to prove that Anderson per se, has in-fact information on this most vital of subjects.
As to this, we MUST find-out.
(Y-T has available for viewing, a R.v.G.III film displaying a rare view of him presiding over (controlling) an exclusive garden party attended by some of those said N.Y. 400.
