  • The Type 072A and its predecessor is a large family of landing ship tanks, or LST, which deploy armoured vehicles and marines to support an amphibious landing. China has built 36 of the Type 072 series of LST.

Whilst the latest version is by far the most capable, the earlier versions are still useful landing vessels, and the PLA Navy may well have plans to upgrade these within the constraints of the hull in due course. It might seem that combining such vessels with the many Chinese fast attack missile boats would make for a highly effective combination, since both classes of vessel are ideal for use in shallower waters.

I see type 72s used to deliver a concentrated force along a single front. Tip of the spear so to speak. But the bulk of landing force will ride on work horse LSMs like Type 271s and Type 74. Type 72s to be honest are an overkill for Taiwan and more suited to south china sea or other longer range operations in Asia. The LSM have range of 1000nm and has room for 3 tanks, 5 IFV or 7 to 8 trucks. Most importantly they are extremely numerous, about 500 type 271s are built from 1980s to 1990s, with ~300 of estimates to be still in operation. (They are often ignore by west analyst since they are in Army's orbat rather than the Navy's and often operated by reserves rather than active troops.) This alone would deliver 2 to 3 brigades by itself in a single wave. However, i would image Type 74As to be target vessel for an future invasion, with existing numbers only used for training, and production will ramps up to hundred s during periods of tension, similar to how type 271 numbers ramped up in the 1990s. The existing 271s wil like to be in reserve or used for supplies missions in case port facilities are not usable. Since Type 271 is about 6 knots slower than type 74A, has higher crew count and has much poor ride quality, which would increase casualty rate during thr crossing, sucking up man power than be used elsewhere and reduce combat effectiveness of landed troops.

China's maritime & naval industry is improving the by day, surpassing the so called Western standards by miles . . . there's lot we could learn from China . . . a country with such capabilities doesn't need nukes to keep the super powers at bay & continue sustaining the balance (way of life) of world as it is . . . dictatorship has it's perks though . . . for e.g. a brilliant human resource management in every Chinese industry, that's not susceptible to the challenges of democracy . . . China's growing naval prowess & it's capabilities is the perfect example . . .

  • @tonysu8860

According to Wikipedia, your figures for the capability of the Type 72 LST are very far off.
Each ship does not have a capacity of 500 troops plus armored vehicles,
Apparently each ship has a capacity of 250 plus 10 vehicles.
    Big difference.
And, since it has a max speed of 20 knots (14 mph), it'll take a very, very long time to traverse the Taiwan Strait... Maybe half a day under ideal conditions if lucky? I'd say these aren't particularly fearsome vessels, all that can be said for them is that they can transport some soldiers, but not many and without any higher end vehicles. Their vehicles would have to be transported by other means because 10 relatively light vehicles isn't likely going to be enough.

Perhaps the needs to protect these ships are even more important than having more of them. Although these ships are not expensive to build, the cargoes they carried are far more valuable to the PLA and its operations. These ships only have token defensive capabilities and rely on escorting warships for protection. So building more of these LSTs means building more escorts.

To be honest, Taiwan is not as fortified as everyone thinks. The most heavily fortified island is Kinmen. If you go to Taiwan, which I recommend for its good food and great atmosphere, make sure to visit Kaohsiung beach. This is the most likely landing spot for the PRC; it's hardly defended at all. There are barely any hedgehogs, bunkers, or checkpoints. The PRC could literally land under the cover of a new moon at any of the beaches and unload enough forces to secure every port and piece of infrastructure in the south. Moreover, the strong ties many senior leaders in the Taiwanese army have to the mainland, including family and assets, are concerning. Coupled with the CRS report indicating that over 70% of retiring Senior Leaders either move to the mainland or become activists against Taiwan, there's a strong indication that there are senior leaders still in service who may not be fully loyal. In such a scenario, the initial invasion could be swift and silent.
Once daylight breaks, the PRC would likely target every stationary howitzer position-many of which haven't moved since the 1960s-and given China's proximity, just 100km from Taiwan, a barrage of rockets could hit all the hangars, presidential and government centers, and barracks within the first few hours. My prediction is that once the government is decapitated and major military command destroyed, the remaining senior leaders, probably on the CCP payroll anyway, would assume governance and surrender. The last Ash Center and NCCU polling of Taiwanese on the questions of: Would you fight to the death for Taiwan and\or if they are willing to join the military to defend Taiwan. 69% answered yes to the first and less than 22% the latter.
By the time the US reacts, the conflict would likely be nearly over. Sad, but thats the reality and the PRC only grows stronger every year.

China should design protected "box" where soliders are safe that the tank load up to the cliff then move back and load more box of soliders and repeat. Those box should be heavy reinforced to protect it from higher caliber guns.

If China does invade the first thing China will do is use the PLARF to destroy majority of the island's defense capabilities, airfields, radar and the 12 warships that Taiwan has. The only thing standing between Taiwan and the landing party is Taiwan's ground forces assuming they dont surrender the beach.

The difference is back in wwii, there’s hardly any precision/guided weapons. The sensory technologies (IR, laser, various bands of radar, etc) for detecting hidden enemy weapons did not exist. Total and endured air superiority was not easy to maintain. Airborne assault troops, which render some of the beach head defences useless, did not exist. The capabilities of paratroopers were no match to modern day ones. There was no hovercraft (eg LCAC) type landing platform which widens dramatically the types of coasts you can land on. The list goes on and on … which make the modern day coastal defence strategy a lot more different than it used to be.

It is generally believed that a combined brigade-level amphibious delivery requires 20-25 072As. Therefore, some analysts believe that when China suddenly produces 072 on a large scale and the total number increases to 50+, it will be the beginning of an attack on Taiwan.

It is noteworthy that Russia managed to conduct operations in Syria with it's legacy 1970s Cold War landing ships over much greater distances.
Taiwan would never become the threat potential that would require amphibious landings - a simple blockade would do in order to break a seceding leadership - while crucial US arms shipment like anti-ship and cruise missiles are to be intercepted as during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
An arguably more relevant factor may be shaping the diplomatic climate, similar to Syria that enjoyed reinforcements from Iran.
For now, the Philippines are again in US control - but that may change, complicating any US or Japanese operations if the PLA were given temporary station or additional airlift options.

    Oh BOY!!!
A LST-design like that of WW2.....with the bow doors Directly/Nearly on the surface. That is why, if you look at the USN LAST LST-types (not the landing craft themselves), We DON'T have our bow doors near the surface!!!
I F ... You blow out those doors, water rushes into the cargo of HEAVY Tanks and you'll sink the vessel, with Everything/body onboard!!!
So, I believe that once the PLAN has a 'beach secured' MayBe they'll send in these vessels to land tanks near the shore!!

    • @MrCastodian
      @MrCastodian Рік тому

True, USA did not have bow ports, you had a ramp, that ramp made the ship incapable of dropping amphibious units in the sea, they could only deploy them in the sea from the stern.
On the other hand, if you blow a hole in Newport class LST they go down just as fast as if you blow a hole in Type 072

@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P how do you reckon the new USN LST program or something what ever they call them, i think as you have served in USN for more than 20 years, you must have a great view on that
LST is LST, thats all, the only place to see a LST is where no enermy ship exists at all. and for a landing mission, you must clear all enermy ship at first.
Soviet Union and Russia built so called WW2 style LST till now. and soviet army ready to perform a major landing mission from Romania coast to Italy and Greek if WW3 begins
i totally understand why USN do not build LST after WWII US ARMY have base everywhere in the world, US army can invade Iraq from Saudi Arabic. no landing mission. but image one scene, what if another major landing mission from UK to France just like WWII, your mission is transport 3 million tones of equipments and more than 1000k GI cross the strait in 3 weeks
LCAC can be fast, but each carries 1 tank or 50 GI at one time, helicopters can not carry tanks, cargoes needs a port for unloading.
for most Chinese, we lately realized US army do not perform any of major military operation since gulf war, US built a whole bunch of fancy things like DDG 1000, US army fight againist Afghanistan with their expensive missiles and laser bomb and performace of US army in Afghanistan are even worse then soviet army in Afghanistsn. are those things US army told us or they believe is true?
what if Taiwan war again? what if WW3 again? will these fancy things designed for send a little group of marine troops overseas actually work if your enermy have 3 tank division, 300k infantry, and 600 new jet fighters? for China, theres more than 3 Taiwan War in old ages.
question: DO AMERICAN KNOW HOW TO WIN THE TAIWAN WAR THAN CHINESE? i think japs know much more than American about asia and about Taiwan, as they lose the Taiwan war 500 years ago. so as russian, they know more about europe, and they build so called outdated LST till now.
American has some kind of mysterious selfconfidence that what they are doing is right for no reason. for euro-asian peoples, we have learn some valueable lessions that nothing comes with no reason, if France are going through Revolution that means things has come for europe to have a revolution. if russians are at civil war that means russian need the civil war. and for Taiwan War, maybe it may happen more times as time changes. everytime China shift its govener, original govener will escape to Taiwan, and when it is the time, Taiwan war happens, and new govener rule out the old one and bring the civil war to an end.
US do not actually have that kind of experience since begin, but as times goes by, American may also experience things like this every few decades, and you will understand why China are building LST and prepare a Taiwan war, why moscow are fighting againist kiev, why riot in paris, why turks are fighting with russian in ukrine, and why japs are invading china and supporting Taiwan goverment

@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P as i said, things will not change since it begins till its end. DD and CV became mainbattle ship since WWII, things do not change till now. DD become DDG, CV become CVN, but major role of dd and cv do not change. no one build BB and crusiers now. even the type 055 DDG is still named as DDG not crusier, that is not because it is smaller than a crusier but it play the role of DDG.
now i do not see any kind of new landing vehicle can play the role of LST. the main and only use of LST is transport large number of tanks and army forces--not marines, in the range of less than 500 km, from one coast to another, affordable and easy. the original design of LST in WWII is a mid size ship, can striaght land on a coast, has a gate at front and can pull it self back into sea and at last affordable price can be built in large numbers. i do not see any kind of new things can actually play the row of this.
BB can be abandond because CV carries plane can destroy enermy ship better, crusier can be abandond because new DD can also cruse the sea and do most of crusier job better and cheaper.so why no LST.
well imagine one scene, russians rearmed havana with 1000 new tanks and 500 new jet fighters, and before Russians try to deploy some of their nukes on the island, US army have to invade Cuba first. US Navy should transport at least 3 divisions in 3 weeks before Russian navy with 11 CVN and 100 DDG come oversea. what should you do?
