Thank you for this informative video, Tony! I’ve watched a few of your videos and just subscribed, they are extremely helpful. I’m taking my daughter to Barcelona for her 30th birthday in May. We travel to Europe a lot but have never been to Spain and I like to really be prepared…your videos are fantastic and enjoyable to watch-thanks again!
Not only look down at the pavement, which might only be valid for Barcelona, but for all cities, also look up. If you only look around at "ground level" you might miss wonderful facades or rooftop features higher up.
Good video and tips. We visited in August 2002 and stayed in the Hotel Continental on Ramblas, booked 7 nights. Around the corner from the metro at Placa Catalunya. The hotel was B&B and they also had a tea/coffee area with biscuits all day long. The room had a small balcony with table and 2 chairs. Across ramblas from the hotel was a Supermecado where we sourced most of our evening meals. We planned the trip using a Spain Travel book. Listed everything we wanted to see, marked on maps. We walked, and walked and walked. And ticked off the list. The only time we used public transport was the bus to Gaudi Park and the train to Montserrat. Walking ensured that we saw far more interesting buildings and churches and some dicey areas. Eating out whether a meal or just tapas get away from the tourist areas and look where the locals eat and drink. Beware of the paella 'specials', not worth the money. I kept a book where I recorded what we saw each day and the other side of the book what we spent each day. Back home recorded it all in an Excel. August is summer, holiday season in Europe, daily temps were 35c starting at 29c. Drink lots of fluids.
Just to say a very big thank you Tony. I have planned my 3+ weeks in Spain viewing your wonderful channel. From booking hotels in recommended neighbourhoods, train bookings and booking reservations for busy attractions to avoid long cues. Your advice gave me the confidence to plain what I hope will be a memorable trip to Spain 😊. PS I only wish u did this for other countries in Europe . K
Be careful when traveling in Barcelona. My wife had her cell phone stolen while entering the Parallel metro station. The gate suddenly refuse to open with the metro card then someone bumped into her and reach into her coat pocket to take the device. If something unexpected happens you can bet someone is looking to distract you to steal your stuff.
I had someone tried to steal my husband's phone in a restaurant but I managed to stop him. He waved a piece of paper to distract me. Never leave your personal item unattended.
@@wendyleung6469 sorry to hear that, Wendy. Glad you managed to prevent the theft. Never ever leave your phone on top of the table. Keep it always with you or in an inside pocket.
We'll be visiting Barcelona a total of 9 days in September. We're splitting it up a bit by spending the first 7 nights there, then 4 nights in Marseille, then back to Barcelona for the final 2 days. We plan on two day tours, one that covers the Dali museum, the other that goes to Andorra. To say we're super psyched would be an understatement.
Hi there. In our opinion, a day trip to Andorra makes no sense at all. You will spend more time on the road that in Andorra and then, in Andorra itself, where will you go? You need four or five days to explore reasonably well the country. See other excellent (and more suitable) day trips from Barcelona here: ua-cam.com/video/z6XAhNXRQ-w/v-deo.html
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thank you for your honest appraisal. To be honest, this is the day tour my wife wants. I picked the Dali tour for my part, so she got to pick the other and this is what she wanted. But I'm going to show her this as well as your linked video of suggested day trips. Thanks again!!
@@clubmogambo3214 Well, a day trip to Andorra is not a catastrophyc desicion. The capital is not a big monumental city, but it worths a visit and a walk for a few hours. Just keep in mind that it is at least 3 hours far, and also that you will see the mountains around you but you wont be able to hiking, or visiting the famous spa, or any other cultural visit. For us is a "weekend destination". Ah, and don't walk only in the main avenue of shops, the old town is not spectacular but still have some nice spot, like Casa de la Vall.
@@sergicb1533 Thanks so much for the tips. The wife is keeping an open mind, but still leaning toward Andorra as the other of our two planned day trips.
With your Video help we plan... Thank you we will be in Barcelona April 2 to to April 5 then on to Andalusia coming back to Barcelona on April 12 leaving on April 14. Your many tips are invaluable. This video is amazing. Well done. lived here for 16 years, and I am proud of the city and even prouder when people with the same if not greater put something wonder together like this. Love what you way about personal safety the most.
Thanks so much for your kind words, we are passionate about Barcelona (I lived the first two years of my life, a long long time ago, there). All the best!
Very helpful for my first visit to not only Barcelona, but SPAIN - even after over 40 years in the travel industry it will be my first time experiencing Espana!
As a Spaniard born in Barcelona let me share some tips with you: -1. Don't eat nor drink anything at the RAMBLAS or near SAGRADA FAMILIA. We citizens know that quality-prices in these areas can be almost considered a scam. Avoid that zones if you really want to taste local food. -2. We spanish don't drink as much "sangria" as you think. Try "tinto de verano" instead which is closer to our habits. -3. Please, please, please, keep your belongins safe. No need to get obsessed with it but always be cautious. -4. For whatever visit to city landmarks you should previously check official websites.
Don't worry so much about the tourists, they are adults and they are the same ones who are expelling you from your hometown. Even the thieves are foreigners too.
Locals visit la Boquería to get really specific and rare ingredients. Most of people never do that and the rest don't do that often. The Mercat de Sants by Mercat Nou metro stop has beautiful architecture almost nobody knows outside of the neighbourhood.
Great video. Saw this vid, did planning, then I drove 2.5weeks in spain and a little bit in france (narbonne). Useful advice in this video. Underground car park $25-30ish a day I found. I'm not european so i couldnt seem to get online app deals (better prices) . sigh. I did not go to Sagrada F, luckily didnt buy ticket as i got sick on the 3rd day. Downtown areas near medieval quarter and the areas just northwest of that was quite stinky in terms of car pollution, same with areas of Granada. Barcelona' architecture in so many places was totally beautiful, I was very impressed.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. We are visiting Barcelona this month end and the video had such wonderful nuggets of information.
Thanks so much Tony for your swift reply it was very helpful. I will wait until mid August and try again. It makes sense that the schedules are not in place yet. We also appreciate your advice about Blahblah. Thank you for your care and dedication to we travelers if our world.
I am going in 3 weeks and I was there 2016, like you said we did not have time to see everything so we are staying for 3 days before our cruise. Not using metro or public transportation and we made sure staying in city center so we can walk and also bought 48 hr hop on hop off bus. We also reserved tickets to Sagrada in advance. Very excited! We will check out flea markets this time too.
Wow, thanks for this video! We’re going to Mallorca for 2 days and then spending 5days in Barcelona. We will def not rent a car like you advised -we’re from the USA so we always forget about the public transportation. Muchísimas gracias
Hi Tony, My husband an I love your channel, you explain everything so well and simply. We are going to Barcelona to Calella de Pallafrugell, and have worked out what train to catch to Girona but there do not to seem to be any buses to the coast on the day we are traveling Monday 23rd September 2024. The Blabla rides come up though. Do you recommend the BlaBla service, is it safe? Or do you a better way for us to get to Calella de Palafrugell? We would really appreciate some advice please. We are from Queensland in Australia and hear you love Australia or Perth where you visited. It is a fabulous city and beautiful country. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day. Arnaum and Ben.
Hi Arnaum and Ben, in the vast majority of cases, if you can't find a bus or train ticket for a date a few months ahead, it's because it hasn't been introduced in the system yet. To make sure, check a date before or after your intended date of travel - if you can't find tickets for those dates either, that's because they are not being sold yet. We wouldn't use BlaBlaCar unless you had previous experience of how the system works. We love Australia indeed and hopefully will be back soon! All the best to you!
Dear Tony, I am thinking about travelling to Spain in December 2024 and was hoping to visit some of the painted palaeolithic caves near Altamira. I haven't been able to find much information advising which ones are open to the public, how to access them, or the best ones to view and was hoping you might be able to provide some answers to these questions. I have only recently discovered your wonderful channel, so please forgive me if you have already made a video covering this. Thank you for your very informative and practical videos, they have actually been a major factor in encouraging my decision to make Spain my next travel destination.
We don't have any video on Altamira yet here in the channel, but we have one our Spanish-language channel, in case it is of help. Here: ua-cam.com/video/nVvSvQx0ZnU/v-deo.html
Barça (pronounced BARSA) is short for the Catalan pronuciation BARSALONA, and is, as you say, used just for the FC Barcelona. People here says often "Barna" to refer to the city. And don't forget "Barcelona és bona si la bossa sona" (Barcelona is good as long as the purse "sounds")
great video. I'm in Barcelona right now. We come twice a year for a few weeks since we live in Paris and it's so close. It's my second favorite city in the world after Paris. :)
1. Public transport: just buy the Hola Barcelona card valid for 2, 3 or 4 days. Buy it online and pick it out from a metro machine. 2. Had no problem entering Sagrada without reservation and it was for free. I do not understand why we were so lucky.
@@Kay-xz5ru a bit early to be able to tell, check the forecast ten days before travel. Right now it's pretty chilly but everything could change quickly.

Hi Tony, Your videos are so informative. It gives us so much direction as to how to plan our trip. A big thank you. I wanted to know if Barcelona Sants train station ( or anywhere in Barcelona central actually) had luggage storage and the cost. We are a family of 5 and don't want to arrive early in the day but not have our bags with us until we can access our accomodation. Our other option is to try to change our accomodation days and arrive early in Madrid via train so the same question for Atocha station. Also do you have anymore Menu Del Dia recommendations as one of the restaurants in your video has now closed and it looked really good. Thank you M.

re; Boqueria. We really enjoyed eating at El Quimm last time we were there. Has it gone downhill in recent years? Any recommendations for something equivalent/better?
Hi again Tony! I am revisiting many of your videos to refresh my memory from when I first watched them. Our trip is coming soon now and I have another question for you. We have booked the Sagrada Familia without the towers and was wondering how much time to allow, generally, before we should book the Park Guell and the best way to get there. I was going to forgo going to PG but really want to see it. I also remember that there was a better entrance so you don't have to walk up hill, so can you let me know which entrance please? Thank you in advance for your valuable knowledge!
Hi again, Barbara. Dedicate between two and three hours to the Sagrada Familia. There is no quick connection to Park Güell, there will always be some climb involved. You could take a taxi, it's a short ride and will leave you at the entrance.
Just got back from a week in Barcelona, we also visited Girona and Figueres. Your videos were really helpful, Im so happy to have found your channel, very very informative and saved us so much time. Keep up the good work and thank you for the info

Dear Mr. Tony First of all thanks a lot for your detailed and simple description to the tourists’ trips and attractions in Spain and Portugal. My wife and I are planning to visit Barcelona during next month, but we are concerned about Halal and Muslim food / street food in Barcelona, so please can you help with many thanks in advance for your kindness.
There is no such thing as street food in Spain - with a few exceptions. We don't have a video on the topic of your question yet so our advice is to seek help from your hotel wherever you are staying. They should be able to point you to the right places.
Great video Tony! Thank you for your advices. I want to ask you which place would you recommend near barcelona to go to? I want to go in late septembar, to grab a chance to enjoy beaches, some place that is cheaper then barcelona, but also near so i can go to a day trip to Barcelona.
Hi there! Your videos and tips are so helpful! Our family of 5 will be in Barcelona for 1 week. I'm trying to decide between T-usual or T-grup. I'm not sure how ofter we will need transportion. The T-grup will give each of us 14 trips vs. unlimited with T-usual.
For those costs you have to spend, like train tickets.Choosing the right ticketing app and finding discount is a useful method.I remember there is an app that is discounting all train tickets in the UK and Europe. It's very economical and I've spent 35%less each time!
Hi, We are traveling to Barcelona in mid August( in 2 weeks) and we can't wait. I came upon your channel and they are so very helpful! I have a question to ask you. If our family devotes one day(our second day) to visit Park Guell @9 am, Sagrada Familia @2pm, visit Hospital de Sant Pau, and then visit Casa Mila at night, would this be too much? Do you agree the order of the activities? We stay near Placa de Catalunya and the very first full day, we plan visiting Barri Gotic walk, Barcelona Cathedral tour and Picasso museum. Maybe we can visit Casa Mila on the first day since it is not too far from our hotel? What time of the day do you recommend that we visit Casa Mila? Thank you so much!
Hi Ashley, first of all, if you enter the Sagrada Familia at 2 pm, you might not have much time of the Hospital de Sant Pau, check the closing times. Four major attractions in one day would be quite an intense (and probably exhausting) day. You can visit La Pedrera (Casa Mila) any time you prefer. It is quieter first thing in the morning and after lunch time.
Thank you so very much for your videos, they are very helpful for someone like me, planning to do a solo trip from Sevilla, Cordoba, Rhonda, Granada and Barcelona in May. May i know how safe it is to travel alone for an Asian lady, please? ☺Also is it safe to drive from Sevilla to the other cities listed above? After watching your videos, i plan to fly from Granada to Barcelona. Blessings 🙏😊
Hi Tony. Your videos are great! And so, so helpful 😊 I’m taking your advice and not eating along La Ramblas do you have any recommendations of good restaurants where the locals eat? Many thanks
I'll be there next week 😍 my first time to Europe. Unfortunately one of the first places the guide takes us to is Las Ramblas so any recommendations on decent food there?
Hi Enrique, fortunately (or unfortunately) not that many people visit the Hospital, so if you come from a place like the Sagrada Familia, you might think the hospital is deserted.
Hello, I really appreciated this video! We are coming to Spain soon on a tour. We will have a few days in Barcelona at the end. One of those days will be a Sunday. Is the Hospital se Sant Pau open to see on a Sunday. I was also thinking with the really hot weather going to a beach would be nice as well. Can you recommend a beach that is not too touristic, a bit quieter, withy nice sandy beach. That also has places for eating near by. We are looking for relaxation not party vibe. Thanks!
Hello Lisa, the hospital is opened on Sundays indeed. All beaches in Barcelona are touristic and busy, specially on hot days. You should try the ones furthest away from the centre, such as Mar Bella and Llevant. We wouldn't spend a minute on Barcelona beaches as we feel there are a million other more interesting places to visit in the the city, but then that's our personal preference.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal thanks you for your reply! The Sunday that was asking you about, will be at the end of a 15 day tour of Spain and Portugal, we were looking to have maybe a rest day before we leave for France . depending on the weather it may be way to hot to sit on the beach, do you have any suggestions for indoor places to stay cool some museums that would be open on a Sunday. Hello, I have a question regarding internet connectivity while in Barcelona. Every hotel obviously offers Wi-Fi, but that means being offline while visiting these places. Would you recommend buying a sim-card at the airport and buying data? Or would these E-sim applications be better? Or what other suggestions do you have?

Hola Tony! I’m visiting from Barcelona from Chicago USA for the day and night before a Cruise to Malaga, Gibraltar, and Lisbon and then transatlantic. Your videos are so helpful and well made! Keep going. You have a good program. Since we only have Sunday in Barcelona and then part of Monday we clearly do not have enough to experience Barcelona. And we are staying in Casteldefels at SB Hotel. Should we try to do something in Barcelona? Or should we do something close to our hotel? We love good food and would welcome any recommendations. Gracias! Arturo

@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thank you. Since we arrive at 7 am Sunday we know we can't check in to our hotel in Castelldefels until the afternoon. Should we use a luggage service to hold our luggage at or near the airport and then go to the city center via public transit and explore? That way we come back via public transit to the airport after some sightseeing and pick up our luggage. We'd probably Uber to the the hotel then since we have 4 in our group and luggage. Alternatively, we could go to Castelldefels and drop our luggage at the hotel. They would hold it for our check in later. Then we go out from there to the city center.

@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal I've seen the video. Very good too. I don't know if you know it, but another interesting place "underrated" like l'Hospital de Sant Pau, is Reus, but only for those interested in architecture. It is where Gaudí was born, but there are no works by him, but there are works by other modernist masters. The Navas house, l'Institut Pere Mata are true works of art. @@danpastor7116 thanks for your words, Dan, we know Reus quite well, in fact, we have quite a few texts on the city on another project of ours (a website on Barcelona in Portuguese). Casa Navas is one of the most beautiful modernist houses we've ever visited. The Gaudi Centre is quite interesting too, never mind the magnificent Institut Pere Mata. And then it is the vermut! Too good to be true. But, from experience, very few people venture to Reus, which is a pity while at the same time understandable, given that there is so much to see in Barcelona.

As a local I can say that all is pretty accurate. Just to add something, don't book an hotel/airbnb in hospitalet, nou barris, la mina or ciutatvella (raval, gotic and born) About raval and gotic, those are good places to visit but are usually dirty and full of pickpockets. Good places are eixample, sarria, gracia, sants, horta, poble nou...

Thank you for sharing your experience!
How great to hear that, Noela! We've already started producing Portuguese material, but don't intend to go beyond.
I think we have done our fair share of effort warning people about the issue.

As a Spaniard born in Barcelona let me share some tips with you:
As we have just outlined in the video above and in other videos on the channel such as this one: ua-cam.com/video/rxzQRiR1y4w/v-deo.html
Don't worry so much about the tourists, they are adults and they are the same ones who are expelling you from your hometown. Even the thieves are foreigners too.
And if you do eat on the Ramblas, do not order Paella! Uch! You will get microwaved garbage there!
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks Tony, you're the best!

Hi Tanya, is there any specific doubt you have on the subject? We see no difference in boarding a flight in Barcelona or any other airport in the world. For transport from the airport, see: ua-cam.com/video/YFJG4bZYxU4/v-deo.html
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal okay, thanks! I have actually watched this one, it was super helpful. My only worry is the more I am watching videos or reading an art on pickpocketing, it’s making me a little worried. I wanted to understand the possibility of it happening at the airport.
@@tanyakashyap2918 pickpocketing is a concern all throughout the tourist cities of Europe. At the airport, pay specific attention at the time of check-in, do not leave any valuables out of sight.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal okay, noted. Thank you and thanks for the promptness, really appreciate it.
Hello Mr.Tony
Is spain safe now for travelers and tourists. We are planning to visit in next march and it’s not the first time we love the culture and the people was very nice and friendly 🤍
Spain is safe - for as long as you are always aware of the existence of pickpocketing. All the best!
Is their a hotel you recommend is there an area you recomend staying close for sight seeing
An area you should avoid
Thank you so much
Benjamin

Hi, I would like to ask you about travelling from madrid to algeciras by bus. Can we buy tickets from station? And where we can print tickets? Thanks for your kindness.
Great video! I am looking forward to hearing that beautiful accent of yours in Castellano, Catalan, and English! I booked a trip for 9 nights and I know it won’t be enough, but definitely enough on my budget😊. Thanks for the tips. I’m enjoying studying Barna every day until I go (in 5 months!)!
Hi Lisa, 9 nights is far more than most people dedicate to Barcelona, so you will be fine! All the best!
Great video from. I just want to point out that as a resident of Barcelona for the last 66 years and knowledgeable about all of Catalonia, if you have those days, I would take a trip to Girona/Figueres - Dalí Museum/Costa Brava. You will not be able to visit all this in one day, although you can go to Girona and Figueres by train Barcelona-Girona 35 min Girona-Figueres 45 min. Unfortunately, the Costa Brava - landscapes and beaches - can only be reached by bus or car..
@@danpastor7116 thanks Dan. We have a video where we share our tips for the best day trips from Barcelona, including the ones you mention: ua-cam.com/video/z6XAhNXRQ-w/v-deo.html
Keep up with this channel, I find it very serious, unlike others
Hi Tony...what Sim card and where to buy do you recommend in Barcelona at airport or city?
Hi, we don't have a video on the topic yet but the recommendations we give for Madrid are valid for Barcelona too ua-cam.com/video/u8z5PfSbtb4/v-deo.html
Is their a combination ticket for Sagrada , Parc Guell and the hospital and hop on hop off bus?
Not that we know of. There is one that includes 10 Modernist attractions: ua-cam.com/video/DdI8q2ExeHo/v-deo.html
Hi, Which cab service to use? Freenow , Uber or Cabify?
Need to use from airport to hotel and hotel to attractions. Won’t be using metro. Pls guide.
We discuss that on our video on how to leave the airport here: ua-cam.com/video/YFJG4bZYxU4/v-deo.html
Really appreciate your video and have taken note of your restaurant suggestion. Do you have any more restaurant suggestions in that same general area that I can take note of please?

As a local I can say that all is pretty accurate. Just to add something, don't book an hotel/airbnb in hospitalet, nou barris, la mina or ciutatvella (raval, gotic and born) About raval and gotic, those are good places to visit but are usually dirty and full of pickpockets. Good places are eixample, sarria, gracia, sants, horta, poble nou...
Merci, Adri! We've always encouraged people to stay away from AirBnb, the damage "pisos turísticos" have caused to the inhabitants of Barcelona is indescribable. All the best!
Im staying right near sagrada familia, is that a good place to be at?
Tony, Is it possible to visit Hospital de Sant Pau without purchase of on-line tickets before arrival? Will be arriving BCN early Feb and thinking maybe demand won't be real high. Thoughts? Thanks,
Hi there, during the low season, it should be ok to buy tickets on the spot. All the best.
Good advices!
👍🏻
I’m incredible! I’m watching an English video to learn what not to do in Barcelona as a tourist, but it turns out I’m a native of Barcelona and have lived here my whole life. 😅😅
