THIS IS LITERALLY MY DREAM BOAT. it sounds so weird but I love these little boats. Buy them for cheap, repair them for cheap, have priceless memories and fun.
_I don’t think this should be your “first and last” boating restoration. For a newbie to the boat scene you’ve done a better job than many of the clowns I’ve come across, well done 👏🏼_
Just a tip with the steering shaft you need to use marine grease on it sometimes the steering shafts also have serviceable grease nipples on them aswell. I do get it though you were trying to fix the boat on a budget
@KiwiCarLife You mentioned the steering skipped sounds like you could need to replace the steering box and steering cable unfortunately the cables don't last forever and often will fail when you least expect it it's happend to me when I've been out at sea and i have had to rig up a manual tillar handle to get back to the beach haha as i lost steering it's not an overly complicated job to change just takes some time.
The Grey Beaver had me curling over😂..... You are a very talented man indeed as you done a great job of bringing the crusty old Beaver back to life. That was great entertainment...thanks for the laugh
Fyi it's a Fleetline Sapphire which were made by Fibreglass Moulders in Auckland back in the 1970's. They used to have an alloy serial number etc plate I think riveted in the engine well. They were very popular back then as an affordable family boat for good conditions. FM also made Haines Hunters which were a much more capable sea boat and iterations of which are still going today. A common issue with then now is the untreated ply they used in them particularly the transom, it becomes waterlogged. Those three cylinder Yamaha's were modelled off the Johnson / Evinrude Loop Charged three cylinders and both are excellent simple motors with excellent power to weight ratios which nothing compares with today surprisingly enough, and they sound, and smell great as well. Boats are great fun although you'd sure want to keep a weather eye out down there, things change fast and can go South very quickly. Have fun.
Ah awesome. I love the crossover you're doing with boats and cars. I really enjoy both. 6spd manual 550hp Toyota Soarer with the 1J. My boat is a 5.5 meter half cab boat with a Yamaha V4 130. Fully trimmed out, it'll hit near 80km/h.
@@KiwiCarLife 😂Indeed. Boating is a nice way to unwind and escape people... plus as you say, on the water there are no speed limits and you can go as fast as your boat can.
I'm using my partners account but this was my boat that me and my friend Paul brought! When we brought it, it was a horrible poo brown colour like the bottom half. I'm a car painter by trade and this is the story of how a couple mates bought a boat for $500 repaired the front pillars that were rotten with fibreglass. And my mate Paul is a house painter so he painted the inside and I painted the outside metallic grey. We named this boat The Grey Beaver because both of our girlfriends at the time were older than us. Paul's girlfriend was fine with it, but mine wasn't too happy :) We used to say to each other "Shall we take the beaver out this weekend and get her wet?" .....or "Shall we get inside the Beaver?"....Anyway, was a great boat but we lost interest and it sat for 8 years, so glad to see it running again and if you tilt the engine slightly, it won't jump around so much when it's going flat out.
Ahh I was wondering when the original owner might turn up on this video! That's a funny story. And yep the mighty Grey Beaver is running marvelously now. We take it out a few times a week for a bit of fun. Goes well! Clocking nearly 40 knots out of it. Not slow!
@@KiwiCarLife Good to see he old girl back in action... we had some fun times in/on her and did it up pretty ok, though she did slide with a bit of neglect. The owner before us was a Pro Rugy player who had let it sit around for 8 years or so till Mark came across her.. Great she is still humming.
Man wish I had those skills. Made it look easy. Would live to know how you overcame the broken bolt on the coolant housing, and how do you know what parts to source? And where to get them from?
Funny I always thought the water coming out the side was a telltale to indicate that there was adequate water, most of the cooling water came out the exhaust cooling the exhaust.
Ok. Forgive my ignorance, but if I was to get a boat instead of a car does that mean I no longer have to pay for rego and warrant? I mean I could just travel everywhere on a jet ski perhaps. I guess I would have to travel by bus for the places the boat can't get to.
What kind of boat? Is it a fleetline sapphire 4.5 or bit bigger? I just done the same thing to a 1985 fleetline sapphire 4.5 rebuild it goes like a dream now good vid cheers
you are asking for trouble with that thing, writing from experience, when things go wrong on the ocean, things can go from bad to really really bad in seconds
im all for more of this
Haha well, the view count says otherwise sadly so will be back to cars lol
The Grey Beaver is a phenomenal name
What a machine

Haha thanks man! Was a bit of fun
Somewhere in another universe there’s a version of you saying G’day G’day and welcome back to another episode of KiwiBoatLife 😂
Haha this video will probably be the only one lol
I'm loving the new restoration direction for the channel. Making old junk scream again! Keep it up!
Thanks man!

Yeah I need to try sort that out aye it's still quite stiff

This was awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Glad to hear!
That little 3 cylinder sounds absolutely epic in those full throttle clips, damn.
Yeah man 2 stroke outboards sound excellent
Brilliant episode, loved it from start to finish, well done mate!
Haha thanks man
A good honest , fun project….have fun with it over the summer
Thanks man!

Thanks man yes I have no idea who named it but it's not what I would have picked!
@KiwiCarLife definitely not 😂

Some great info there! Very interesting to hear about it
Great job with the restoration. I had no idea how the 2 stroke outboards worked until this video.
Glad to hear you learned something new!
Mean video bro, hope to see more if these sort of projects! Hope you get into some fishing as well as there is awesome fishing in Wellington
Thanks man!
The best NZ based boating channel. Time to catch a fish with it?
Maybe one day haha I don't even own a fishing rod
you have to trim the motor all the way down, this way the boat wont jump like this.
Yeah I’m still learning how these things work!

Haha
Yessss good strong boat
Keep the name of the boat 100%
It's so awful HAHA
It's bad luck to change it.
That's some great boating value!
Sure is!
Great video. Moar!
Thanks!
Great job!
Thanks!
Bro that was awesome.

Motivates me to fix mine enjoyed the episode
Haha yeah man we're having heaps of fun with it now
8:33 you need to trim the motor down. Thats why your bumping and cavatating
Yeah I’m still learning how this all works
Why am i just coming across your channel now 😮 SO SO Cool mate
Thanks man!
I loved this one!
@@Savvyonion haha good to hear!
Legend!
Yessss
Great video pal! Some fishing vids would be mean as this summer.
@@nisHantb_ haha thanks man
The trusty SCA tool kit 🤣 We all own one I see haha
Oh yeahh
Man wish I had those skills. Made it look easy. Would live to know how you overcame the broken bolt on the coolant housing, and how do you know what parts to source? And where to get them from?
Hey man, the broken bolts I just left haha. Got the seals and other parts by searching google. Some came from China, some trade me
Class video this haha!
@@mitchhayes711 haha thanks
Fun fact you can actually like a comment by double tapping it and you can comment by triple tapping it 😂😂🎉🎉
Is that so
where do you get your knowledge from mate its so good to see you versatile
Just learned stuff over time I guess!
How's the transom and stringers? Reckon if the console had rot the wood everywhere else might be a bit rough
The rest of the boat looked fine. Transom is strong as
makes me miss having a boat seaview marina is a great spot to launch from
Yeah annoying you gotta pay but otherwise it’s great. Nice and calm
@@KiwiCarLife yeah annoying but i feel any good boat launch area is pay, could always use out near the airport north side
Funny I always thought the water coming out the side was a telltale to indicate that there was adequate water, most of the cooling water came out the exhaust cooling the exhaust.
Some comes out the exhaust but a lot comes out the little spout too
Says mercury and is corrected by the actual picture of an Evenrude , also Johnson did the V8 300hp 😮
Yeah found out after I did the voiceover. Very cool engines! I’m learning every day
Ok. Forgive my ignorance, but if I was to get a boat instead of a car does that mean I no longer have to pay for rego and warrant? I mean I could just travel everywhere on a jet ski perhaps. I guess I would have to travel by bus for the places the boat can't get to.
Haha yep, but you’d more than lose any savings in the fuel costs. To hold 70km/h on this thing uses about 25L of fuel per hour
This reminds me of the original Fjordling 17ht…. Search it up, In Norway we have small boats like This that are doing over 80knots….
Holy hang the SPEED
That was really interesting, thank you :)
Glad to hear!
You should do a crv review
Already done heaps - done the 1st, 2nd and 6th gen
@@KiwiCarLifenice
are you fully sure you had the bung it :>)
Yep haha
forget the cars we need more of this
Haha I’m trying to come up with another boat video idea
What kind of boat? Is it a fleetline sapphire 4.5 or bit bigger? I just done the same thing to a 1985 fleetline sapphire 4.5 rebuild it goes like a dream now good vid cheers
Yeah Fleetline Sapphire I think. Nice man!
didnt look like the motor was trimmed far enough down when giving it beans? this can cause the bounce
Yeah still learning how these things work haha
yep thats what i was thinking... and its my old boat!!
ahahahah im from the bays I think I saw you guys ripping the other day, I seem to remember seeing a boat of a similar colour lmao
Yesss that probably was us yesterday
Did you play with the trim under way to get more speed / stability?
Yeah, after taking it out that time I managed to get it up to 45 knots. Goes well! But only on totally flat water
@KiwiCarLife yeah. Pretty light weight hull. I'm sure you did but make sure you have spare paddles with you lol
@KiwiCarLife Shame we didn't take out the honda jetski when we did the cn1 review
KiwiBoatLife
Yep haha
Hell naw not the gay beaver 💀🤣
I'm not the only one that heard that 😂😂
HHAHA oops sorry
@@KiwiCarLife don’t be sorry bro I would have said the same thing 🤣
@@KiwiCarLife long live the gay beaver
Does this mean KiwiBikeLife will come soon?
Haha that’s been and gone years ago!
You should turn it into a speed boat
I think I'd need a whole new hull for that! Or a more powerful engine
Haha
Cool
Yesss
“Smell that? two stroke.”
Yessss
Smell that Beaver!
It's called trim instead of tilt the engine
Cheers for the info
Trim up the motor on the way in next time.
Yeah still gotta learn how that works to get it to carve the waves smoothly
hahaha hard. comes in fully trimmed down onto the trailer lol
you are asking for trouble with that thing, writing from experience, when things go wrong on the ocean, things can go from bad to really really bad in seconds
Hence why I probably won't go far from shore, nor keep it very long haha.
Well this is gonna be interesting... Haha
Haha yep!
looks like the grey beaver had some pig rooting going on.
Maybe?
congrats, the gay beaver looks like a lot of fun
