The thing I love about matahachi is he basically holds a mirror up to us the reader and presents many of us with the way a lot of us would frankly be forced to deal with the scenarios that a Musashi or a Kojiro would deal with. We aren’t them. We’re so painfully not them that they seem like these two forces of nature moreso than they do men at times. Kojiro being loved by swords, and Musashi’s awakening are not feats achievable by any mere individuals. Matahachi though we all kinda know someone like him in our own way extremely flawed with his most redeeming quality really being how obviously fallible he is when juxtaposed to someone like Musashi who’s character arc is essentially centered around the awakening of his more whole and centered self, where musashi turns inward and accepts these qualities for what they are, Matahachi does what most do and shifts blame simply to not have to take responsibility for the fact that homie fucked his own life up and lies to his own mother rather than admit to being a weasel.
@@thebeastmodeism Yeah, you nailed the part on how he mirrors most of us (not so much about the rest but wait a bit), like how many times did we tell ourselves, "this time it's going to be different!". "I'm going to change", "i'm not gonna make the same mistake again" just to proceed to repeat them again, and again and again. If Musashi has a talent in his life is his ability to change super fast, almost inhumanly fast, but he lives an extreme lifestyle so is ADAPT OR DIE, he feels this truth in bones, so is only natural for him to develop that quick given how high the stakes are. The effort, danger, consequences and the eventual discipline that they forces you to develop lacked in Matahachi's life, even before going to Kyoto. He chose a lifestyle based on unconsciousness even while hating it because it was easy and confortable; which most of us can (painfully) relate. But i think he got it all wrong, is not this zero-sum game, being a swordsman doesn't mean no sex and no drinking, and sex and drinking doesn't mean "just drown on it". It's all about moderation. And his fear of fighiting and death can be controlled thru training, but he didn't learned cause he didn't tried to.
@@thebeastmodeism Now is the part i explain what you didn't get. **Prepare! This gonna be long** One of the things that the story most do it's dismystify the idea of invencibility, uniquiness, talent and genius, showing that those people are just regular people - fallible and ignorant like everyone of us - that trained really hard and sacrified their ENTIRE LIVES to be great at something ("many say their sword is their world, but those who live by the sword are rare"), and that anyone who think they're special in some way, that they're techniques can't be appropriated, evolved and they can't be beaten it's profoundly misguided and it's creating the environment for his own defeat. That's why Musashi is so stubbornly humble toward the second half of the series, he knows that ego is the most corrosive trap of all. But maybe you're not convinced so let's get more specific, Kojiro was obssessed with swords since his conception by the sea (an origin definitely worthy of a mythological hero or god) but growing up he had terrible technique, raw fighting sense and was psychologically imature just like any kid. In his first true fight he was freezed to death and got traumatized, but later he went in search for improvement and a way to overcome his trauma, he did this by asking for help. And got his ass kicked by his father again, and again, and again, and again in the process. But his determination was so strong that HE CONTINUED SHOWING UP, when most people would have given up, cause all he could think about was "great! I learned something new!"; as a result he came back a bit better everytime. It was a long and arduous process for him, so when he reached a point where he felt completely ready to fight, against those random guys in the beach, he smiled and thought "i can fight! I don't feel fear anymore". And Musashi, while experimenting quick success in an early career, he was trained by the Mighty Shinmen Munisai and those guys he killed were just random dudes caring a sword, they didn't had the same attention and sensibility to performance that he had, and while though his adult strength is really something else, it was a thing developed throughout the years through a tough lifestyle, SO HE EARNED. He was also really lucky, if he had faced Seijuro or Inshun - people who were way more polished at the same age - or someone more matured, Ittosai or Yagyuu, he would have been screwed. Strenght is highly contextual.
I like when Matahachi becomes serious and fights his opponents without any fear and disrespect, like he had been training with Takedzo, demon of death himself, so he no longer fear other swormasters, but if only he was more humble, I might have admire him
I don't know why you hate him it's the most realistic character in the manga and his story is funny asf he's the encarnation of modern day people bajajajajaj

Matahachi. Kind, cowardly, lying, vain. Abandoned his friend and ran away, but saved the same person several years later. He is half-assed, neither a bad guy nor a good guy. He is humanity itself.
Matahachi works so well because he's detestable in such a realistic way. He's not some cartoonish asshole or some great evil, he's just a coward and a slimeball. And you know there are millions of people just like him.
My dumb ass thought he was actually gonna be sasaki kojiro until the real one was introduced. He really looked cool when he killed the one who robbed him.
The more you hate a character, the more you are like him. Only your pride keeps you from seeing the resemblances. I get that when read Wuthering Heights and hated a specific character. Then i remembered how i hated Matahashi for beeing jealous of Musashi strenghts, determination and, above all, of having a goal and pursuing with passion. Matahachi see his destiny and didn't like it - marry and be a lord of a small village - so his only choice is to pursue other's destiny, and doing so, he is aways taking other's face, names, appearences and reputation. Is a beautiful and truthfull character.
Anybody can have Integrity and Accountability. There are many characters who do what he does positively. Tenki was weak but he helped those less fortunate and was loyal to his friend. Otsu was just as alone but she’s kind so people actually like her. Seijuro was just as hedonistic but doesn’t use people to satisfy his lifestyle. Baiken stole someone’s identity but also took on the responsibility of raising their daughter.
@@nathannix3217 of course. I was doing a generalization. And i am not alone in this vision. Goethe, the german poet, also said that "we are more severe with the mistakes we already did". So, if you hate an character, is good to see if you have in some way the thing you hate...
i really actually blame more his mother than Matahachi itself, she never listen and always think was in the right way at the end, not letting Matahachi think or do anything by his own when he was younger and in the very end we just saw that yikes man that we dislike. But its also true that he could even change alone, he was actually an adult but instead of doing the things right just always tried to take advantage of everything he can
While reading Vagabond for the first time around 1 week ago I disliked Matahachi but it was also eye opening that I am quite similar to him in the fact that I set unrealistic expectations upon myself and then never go around to doing it. Hopefully I can change this about myself gradually 🙏

i kinda like matahachi for similar reasons others do , hes realistic and not a hero . he knows hes not a hero , i hoped throughout the story he would change bro didn't obviously . I thought that he would change and become someone of mention more than a timeskip character . the humanity of matahachi was what really made he an interesting character . I can't round my thoughts so ima leave it at that.
Musashi is the main character he is the hero but matahachi is the writer he doesn't isn't as cool as the character he writes but he is cool because he has faults and grows as a person he is like us a person with things he regrets and can't erase the things he did so he moves on in life and grows
I think the whole vagabond fandom agrees that as a person Matahachi,s mother was an awful person but as a m9ther she was truly great. Just something I thought about her abd the fact she adopted him kinda tells a lot about her.
I hated myself when I saw how much I wanted to be like Mushashi but was more like Matahachi, took me a lot effort to convince myself that I still can change. I hate Matachi, and I hate myself for being him in real life.
Matahachi is an incredible character, many stories have a close friend turn against the main character after being unable to surpass them, Matahachi however is a man who knows he is not extraordinary, he is not takezo, although he tries to be, he is pathetic, but he knows it and that makes him quite appealing
The only good thing to be taken from Matahachi is the skill of thinking before doing. Otherwise, the character portrayed how much pathetic most of us are. But if we take the good extracts from Matahachi, Musashi and the other characters, we can become like Takuan, one of the most ideal humans.

**Prepare! This gonna be long**
One of the things that the story most do it's dismystify the idea of invencibility, uniquiness, talent and genius, showing that those people are just regular people - fallible and ignorant like everyone of us - that trained really hard and sacrified their ENTIRE LIVES to be great at something ("many say their sword is their world, but those who live by the sword are rare"), and that anyone who think they're special in some way, that they're techniques can't be appropriated, evolved and they can't be beaten it's profoundly misguided and it's creating the environment for his own defeat.
“She has a pretty scream”
Immediate regret ☠️
We hate people because we see ourselves in them..
Musashi is what i romanticized all samurais to be like as a kid.
Matahachi is what i realized majority of samurais were as an adult.
I like when Matahachi becomes serious and fights his opponents without any fear and disrespect, like he had been training with Takedzo, demon of death himself, so he no longer fear other swormasters, but if only he was more humble, I might have admire him
Yeah the way he posed himself as Sasaki Kojiro just kinda annoyed me and when that guy challenged him to a fight he just pushed him and ran away
This is a beautiful edit, many thanks
I don't know why you hate him it's the most realistic character in the manga and his story is funny asf he's the encarnation of modern day people bajajajajaj
Most realistic, but funnily enough Musashi, the monk and Kojiro were the real ones (book of five rings etc) lol
@@marcof1804 True. But they end up being written in an idealized (or exaggerated) manner so which makes them less realistic than characters such as Matahachi
Less on the hate side but more on absolute zero respect side
He is Meant to be hated
So Its not a problem even if you don't like him till the end just understanding is enough
Nah but how fucked would someone be to steal a dead man's identity ? A honorable samurai no less
Matahachi is the most realistic caracther in this manga, bc he shows how most of the society is. And he is the one who also is the most human
Let's be honest
99% are more like Matahachi than Musashi
We hate him because we relate to him
the scene where Matahachi tells the story to the people on the bridge, made me realize that from the first chapter, he is the one who tells the story for me (the reader)
Did Markiplier just do this on purpose knowing it would become meme material? Thats pretty smart tbh
People dislike Matatachi because is their reflection
Matahachi is a character for truly enlightened minds.
After all, you also do that, lie to yourself.
And Matahachi character development is unf. And then is those scenes with the mom and im just omg im sorry for being born ugly crying.
I'd say the same for his mother as well because her character redemption arc was insane , never thought I'd ever like this character cuz she seemed like someone who is so obnoxious that she is beyond redemption and any development but boy , did I cry like a baby in the mother son arc , absolutely beautiful , Inoue you genius
I love him, I mean I fucking hate him but I love him because of that.
Musashi: I am the main character
Matahachi: pretends to be main character
We are all Matahachi 🛐
He's actually my 2nd favorite character after Takuan.
Me while reading the final chapters of his character arc and his mother's arc:
He is just like me fr
Nah i loved him at the end
Matahachi is like a mirror
Whereas Musashi is what we strive to be
Thanks to matahachi, he's become the man i am exactly was and trying to avoid..m everytime i think about pleasure and easing up my standards i imagine of matahachi and it gives me motivation to just go and improve even in baby steps
Matahachi.
Kind, cowardly, lying, vain.
Abandoned his friend and ran away, but saved the same person several years later.
He is half-assed, neither a bad guy nor a good guy.
He is humanity itself.
After reading Vagabond on my most favorite website this perfectly sums up the comment sections whenever matahachi appears in the chapters haha
Whats the website?
Thank you for the reminder to continue reading Vagabond.
Ngl at the point where his mother died, that’s when i really connected with his character
Matahachi works so well because he's detestable in such a realistic way. He's not some cartoonish asshole or some great evil, he's just a coward and a slimeball. And you know there are millions of people just like him.
Honestly, I relate to Matahachi, I probably have made a lot of the same mistakes.
Thought Matahachi was a side kick, Seems like he was just a sad mess trying to make a Name for Himself.
I’ve never seen or heard of the series of Vagabond, but damn if this video alone hasn’t got me interested.
When you read a passage but didn't understand what it meant.
Live to be a musashi and in the end be a Matahachi
Don't know how I ended here but this is SO ACCURATE 🤣🤣
My dumb ass thought he was actually gonna be sasaki kojiro until the real one was introduced. He really looked cool when he killed the one who robbed him.
Matahachi is a realistic typical human, trying to make a name for himself but always cowers.
"We all wanna be like Musashi but at the end we all end up like matahachi"
Readers hate Matahachi becouse its the character they relate to the most lmao
After learning his mother's story I kinda understand why she's that way. I sympathised learning I might do that same.
This comment section is very confusing for someone who has never heard or read Vagabond.
I don't like both but that mother gave me shivers from hate every time I saw her 😄
The more you hate a character, the more you are like him.
No that’s dumb, you can dislike someone for their decisions and how they carry themselves without being like them.
@@nathannix3217 of course. I was doing a generalization. And i am not alone in this vision. Goethe, the german poet, also said that "we are more severe with the mistakes we already did". So, if you hate an character, is good to see if you have in some way the thing you hate...
this is like our ideal self vs real self. we all just want to be musashi, but we're probably matahachi.
I don't hate him. Rather hes such a real character that it makes me feel sad.
Never read anything about vagabond but you've convinced me
Lmfaoooo I just started reading vagabond and I’m like 120ish chapters in and this is accurate
Matahachi is actually a good character…his mom💀
i really actually blame more his mother than Matahachi itself, she never listen and always think was in the right way at the end, not letting Matahachi think or do anything by his own when he was younger and in the very end we just saw that yikes man that we dislike. But its also true that he could even change alone, he was actually an adult but instead of doing the things right just always tried to take advantage of everything he can
Now that i am more old, i met alot persons like Matahachi and his mom 😭😭
Do not hate him, he represents reality.
Thats why i hate him
While reading Vagabond for the first time around 1 week ago I disliked Matahachi but it was also eye opening that I am quite similar to him in the fact that I set unrealistic expectations upon myself and then never go around to doing it. Hopefully I can change this about myself gradually 🙏
Bro clowning on Matahachi but I remember when I felt the same. He definitely ain't the best but he's trying.
I've no idea WTF he's on about. Vagabond, in every single way, is brilliant.
for some reason matahachi was relatable to me even tho i wasn't living like him, just like how he had no idea what he was doing anymore and how pathetic, at first I hated him but later on i was like he's just like me man...
Nah hes a good character
Matahachi is not a bad fighter at all. He's killed men with his own skill.
His problem is, whenever he can find an easy way out he'll take it, and then wonder why he can't catch up to Takezo.
i actually like that character
Maybe hes like u
@@trips9431 i mean hes pretty relatable, a tragic fate of never doing anything except when its too late. Always inferior to those around him
Hes just like me im always late i did nothing in my life when i was reading vagabond I really liked Musashi and at the same time see Matahashi as a reflection of me
I used to be so confused because I'd never read Vagabond, but after watching that one action drama, I now understand completely. XD
0:18 Funny how that can be interpreted in a certain way
True honesty is knowing and accepting that you will always be more lile Matahachi than Musashi.
Hes my favourite.
soooo true. ofc matahachi is way more realistic, but that doesnt mean i have to like him XD
"I.... lost a friend"
Nonoononon actually this is the best element in this manga
It does not change even after reading to the current point.
i kinda like matahachi for similar reasons others do , hes realistic and not a hero . he knows hes not a hero , i hoped throughout the story he would change bro didn't obviously . I thought that he would change and become someone of mention more than a timeskip character . the humanity of matahachi was what really made he an interesting character . I can't round my thoughts so ima leave it at that.
Takuans the GOAT though.
he's like usopp i still like him
Matahachi true sigma male
Musashi is the main character he is the hero but matahachi is the writer he doesn't isn't as cool as the character he writes but he is cool because he has faults and grows as a person he is like us a person with things he regrets and can't erase the things he did so he moves on in life and grows
I just love matahachi
I think the whole vagabond fandom agrees that as a person Matahachi,s mother was an awful person but as a m9ther she was truly great. Just something I thought about her abd the fact she adopted him kinda tells a lot about her.
I hated myself when I saw how much I wanted to be like Mushashi but was more like Matahachi, took me a lot effort to convince myself that I still can change. I hate Matachi, and I hate myself for being him in real life.
We need one with Berserk😂😂😂
Griffith in right
Donovan and gods hand in left
Musashi is what we can be and Matahachi is what we are
Matahachi is an incredible character, many stories have a close friend turn against the main character after being unable to surpass them, Matahachi however is a man who knows he is not extraordinary, he is not takezo, although he tries to be, he is pathetic, but he knows it and that makes him quite appealing
When you realize his character is more believable than Musashi
The only good thing to be taken from Matahachi is the skill of thinking before doing. Otherwise, the character portrayed how much pathetic most of us are. But if we take the good extracts from Matahachi, Musashi and the other characters, we can become like Takuan, one of the most ideal humans.
almost everyone who watched this video, is much closer to matahachi than musashi.
Funny because he is very like the samurai
I think BOTH Musashi and Matachi are part of our very conscious being. It is our choice whether to FIGHT or RETREAT.
Characters like Matahachi are made so we can empathize with them. We see their whole story, the behind the scenes that we don’t get to in real life. The fact that people still judge, shows how fucked up the world really is
