Absolutely genius to basically force "gamepad mode" with a non-guitar pcb/chip or whatever, but make the strum bar trigger the fret presses. I'm honestly blown away.
This is just crazy. How the hell do you come up with something like that? The GH community must be really dedicated to create this Frankenstein monstrosity for the sole purpose of getting an FC on a single song.
Amazing. I remember the debate on the Scorehero forums like, almost fifteen years ago, about the possibility of this. One question that remains: why exactly is that condition in the code about the guitar controllers implying a strum limit? What purpose does that serve?
There is no definite answer because Harmonix quite literally denied the existence of the strum limit and pretty much told people to get better at the game and stop coping (there's an interview somewhere on youtube, it's pretty hilarious in retrospect). Many believe it was implemented in the early phase where the controllers used for testing might not have been very reliable. It would effectively prevent overstrums on bad hardware. It's just a theory but it seems the most viable.
Did the strum bars on early hardware have Schmitt triggers or debouncing capacitors? If not, it would make sense to have a strum limit like that. Instead of retooling the hardware, retool the software.
I remember back in the day arguing with LocalH and Fyighfreak on whether Obsidian was possible to FC, and Scott said himself "The only FC that is truly impossible is Trogdor on NTSC." this is definitely one of those accomplishments where along with being an iconic fc, it's a "mystery solved" type situation with how an fc like this could happen.
Back in the day we used to take non dualshock ps1 controllers and modify them into broken guitars because the up and down could be used as strum. Literally never once thought it was a beneficial thing other than just being able to play the game. As a 14 year old I didn't have money for guitars, so if a guitar died, I did whatever it took to play. It's wild to see all these years later there's a real reason to use it
This is insane. I hadn't heard that this FC happened, but I was around the GH community back in the day and knew that it was labeled as impossible. Absolutely nuts to know that it actually got taken down.
I know this video is two years old at this point, but sometimes I think about this and wish rock band 1 had controller support for guitar so some psychopath could try and do Green Grass and High Tides NTCS like this

6:26 I'm one of the idiots who wasted hours on this solo. got to around the last note of the "human limit" zone on NTSC twice in MANY hours of attempts. At the time, I couldn't understand why this solo was so hard.
If you play clone hero, there is a setting called gamepad mode (same menu as note speed) which is essentially this (though I believe it behaves like GH3 and not GH2, there are differences in what can and cannot be done between the two).
My first guitar hero was 2, and in my opinion Guitar hero 2 is the greatest guitar hero game ever made.
