Propagating Money Tree in Water Update - Part 2 (with actual results)

- Money Tree is a tropical tree. It is a common houseplant. In the wild it can grow up to 18 meters tall. It needs a lot of sunlight but the leaves get sunburn very easily so morning sunlight is good for it. They are symbolically associated with good financial fortune and are typically seen in businesses, sometimes with red ribbons or other auspicious ornamentation attached. It is also used as a cure in appropriate areas to stimulate the flow of money.

Hi! Just wanted to say that because you rooted just the leaf (without nodes), even though roots came out of it, it is quite unlikely you will see any new shoots. Shoots will only develop from another node. Hope this helps :)
this is what i was suspecting because i have 4 rooted leaflets but they never grew any new shoots. Thanks for your comment cuz now i'm sure :)
also i wonder if it'll grow new shoots if i cut below one node so that there are a total of 2 leaflets on the stem? going to experiment today :)
Yeah you are right. I didn't realize it at that time.
I just saw your video yesterday. Didn’t know we could root a single leaf so I took one off my plant to try it out. I put it in water and put it in the window. Would be very cool if it works. Thanks 🙏
Great
Will you post another update on this little plant? It'd be great to see :). Thank you!
Yes, I will.
Dana Woo I tried the propagating money tree method (put the leaves in water) and after 4 weeks, it start to root like 1/2 cm long
@@EasyPeasyGardening did you every make part 3
I grew a single leaf for two years with no growth or death
I am new to gardening and enjoy the video. Awesome. Tks
Thank you so very much!
You are welcome
Hi Ruchi! Thank you for guiding us with you care and experience :D
I recently made a VERY big cut trying to braid the canopy of my money tree( which was a complete failure) and I'm hoping to have a field of propagations.
My question is will my money tree recover if I cut it all the way back to stubs( no leaves) and restart from the original braid?
It will be better if you leave a few green stems and leaves while pruning.
Thank you for making these videos, they are very helpful! 👍
What happened to this new money tree? Did it survive? If it is doing well, how long did it take to start growing new leaves and branches?
Baoren Liu my leave is rooting about 1/2 cm and gotta wait until 1 in to put them into the soil.
It did not survive the winters but hopefully another one will
I am currently doing the exact same thing. My clippings are growing roots very well inside the water. Will you post a 3rd update so that we can get an update on how they are doing as well as the activity above the soil??
sure
Great, thank you!
Haven't seen an update yet...how are the plants doing?
@@tommyarmstrongjr.4576 it's doing good, will post an update soon, thanks for asking
@@EasyPeasyGardening did you do another video? I can't find it
Thank you!!
You are welcome
Tnx for sharing
My leaf cuttings died in water within a few days. I was very sad but I'll try again.
There is never a 100% success rate but it also depends on the weather. Money tree likes tropical weather so try propagation when weather is warm.
But when growing them in door with ac in the summer and heating in the winter, does the season really matter?
Baoren Liu for the most part, my company always blast the ac, but my money tree is fine with it for two years :) I’m not sure about the heater.... sounds like it can cause a wild fire lol
Yes, the season still matters, unless you control the light intensity, the hours of light and the humidity as well. Also, they're cuttings, not mature plants. It's irrelevant if a mature plant can grow indoor with a/c or heating, cuttings simply need different conditions.
What happened after a couple months! Has the tree grown. I just did this and the roots have grown so much.
It did grow but then it died a few months later because of some other reason

Thanks for the video. My question is about plaits. I got one which is doing really well it’s got new shoots and growing tall.
Do I plait them or do I propagate them.
If I do propagate the Leaves at what point do you plait them.
Sorry 😐 I am new to this plant 🌱 and love it. Thanks for your time.
Leaves grow roots quickly but stems grow plants better. If the plant is small cut it in next spring to propagate.
Thanks. I appreciate your time.
how long since planting???
Does the roots need to be bound? In that the pot should be small so the roots stay tight. I have one that has been in the same pot for a year. It looks healthy, so I'm hesitant to re-pot it. Thank you in advance for advice.
Money tree does not mind being root bound so don't replant it unless there is a problem
Hi Ruchi, question... What kind of soil did you use for this cutting?
I used general potting mix
I would like to send you a picture of my money tree. How can I do this?
My leaves are turning yellow, is that normal? :( where should I be placing my propagation in my house? Indirect sunlight?
Indirect sunlight. They do turn yellow and fall.
can you just take the leaves off the money tree plant and place them in water to re-root
Yes
Hi..i like your videos. I have big money tree in pot. But i notice from one of its root getting rot. When i touched, it felt smooshy. What should i do? Can i take or cut out that root? How should i save my plant? Please tell...thanx
Did you dig it up to feel the roots
@@EasyPeasyGardening i meant one of the wooden braided thick stems or whatever we say...no roots. I did not dig up. The plant is still in pot.
@@TheChanni14 oh so one of the stems have dried up. That happens, it may sprout from the bottom. Just leave the plant as it is
@@EasyPeasyGardening stem is not dried. Its seems to be overwatered. As i press that stem, it squishes n i can see the wet part inside. Other stems are good n healthy. Should Ii leave it as it is??
@@TheChanni14 yes and don't water it for a few days
This is such a great video! Thank you! Will you update if you haven't yet? I have a money tree where the leaves had fallen off in the first two months of owning the tree. I left it alone for a year, and now the money tree is very tall. It's bushy now where the growth has started, but very bare where the leaves had fallen -- about 25 nodes have no stem/leaves. Do the nodes remain dormant? I am very tempted to trim the tree down to the bottom 5 nodes, but also afraid that it won't grow anymore. It's quite pretty now, but knowing that there could be a possibility that those 20 nodes have potential is bothering me.... Any expert advise would be appreciated! Thank you! And thank you again for this video!
You can trim the plant in spring and grow more plants from the cuttings. Also make sure there are some leaves in the trimmed plant
on water better or in the ground. please respond waiting for an answer. what do you advise.
Better in soil
@@EasyPeasyGardening
thank you for the answer
I’m currently doing the same. 😃
Great!
Any luck on your plant?
Help! I followed all of your instructions, but for cuttings without a node, they do well for several months but then they start turning yellow and eventually all of the leaves fall off. When looking at the soul, there are lots of roots, but once the leaves all die off, the stem dies off too and the roots are left in the soil. I had over 20 cuttings take root and all of them died the same way. Some took 1 month, some took up to 3 months, but the process was the same. I also made cuttings with nodes above ground, and all of them are doing really well. Same conditions, same soil, same watering. Any ideas?
You are right, when the only node is inside the soil, it's really hard. I am glad to hear that the cuttings with more nodes are doing fine.
Do you have any suggestions or other things to try?
@@jenhamilton1962 your other approach with more than one node is good
How did the cutting turn out? Did it sprout roots?
Yes, this video shows that. Now we are waiting for the growth above the soil. My guess is that we may have to wait till spring.
My Pachira leaf+petioles rooted fine. But didn't grow a new plant.
Try rooting stems, they work better
@@EasyPeasyGardening Yes I have done so in the past, thank you :) I tried the leaf+petiole out of curiosity and meant to share the results. Although these rooted leaves are quite decorative for as long as they last, I suspect they simply lack the tissue necessary to produce a new plant. All it does is root and callus.
Thank you for your nice videos :)
How long did the watered ones take to root?
It all depends on the weather. I think mine took 3 to 4 weeks
Easy Peasy Gardening I have them in water in a window in the house not in a garden thanks for answering
My Leaves on money tree have dry spots !!Help!
Probably too much sun
Hi!
I brought my money tree months ago, iv been watering it twice a week.
The leaves are falling down,
What should I do??
Is it inside? Is the soil wet? Does the planter have good drainage
@@EasyPeasyGardening yes the plant is inside!!! 1 branches has all the leaves off but, the other are still green and I think some little leaves are growing !
Any advice please???
Thanks
@@godgiven316 hmm...so the plant is ok. Are you sure it's a single plant
