Wow! Quick question, did you add a rooting agent to the plants. I cant grow roots on my sanseveria and my magnolia cutting and it's been well over 2 months 🙂 I would love to know your secret 😉😃More than anything, I would love my magnolia tree cutting to show roots. Also, do I need to allow my cuttings to dry 5 days also for the other plants before placing them in water or just the sanseveria? 😄 Have an awesome day!

    • @thegreenearth
      @thegreenearth  6 місяців тому

I just dried Sansevieria cutting because this plant is prone to rotting but other plants I just put in the water right away after cutting. So, growing the cuttings depends on your plant’s environment, it should be not too cold and there should always a light. Grow light is a big help. For this experiment I just added plain water. But after that when all roots are stable I started using nutrient solution.

Thank you SOOOO much for this video. I have a question about the clay pebbles & water. I don't know if I can find them here in Canada - I've never seen them, but assuming I can, it looked as though you did not fill the glass vases with the pebbles in them, all the way up to where the roots sit.
Is that correct, or am I mistaken. If you did fill them up to the roots, do you constantly keep the water up to the roots or is it like in soil where you let them dry out a bit each week?
    Many, many thanks! ~ Jen

I grew Sanseverias 'snake plant'. Known as 'Mother-in-laws tongue' in the U.K. 2 years ago using water. Warning! They lose the variagation. They don't grow the same as the parent plant. Just all green. They're still fine looking plants in themselves though. If you want it to be like the parent plant, you have to divide it as new pups develop at the base of the plant. Also! I put it in compost once the roots had grown strong. You won't see new shoots until the following year. So be patient. I was also able to cut it into 4 slices from top to bottom after roots had formed along the bottom, giving me a number of thinner cuttings. (Make sure you have roots at the bottom of each slice). These can be put in compost in 'one' 4 inch (10cm) pot. Each grew as an individual plant. Then you put them into single pots as the new shoots appear. Experiment both methods for yourselves using 2 leaf spikes, and compare. It's fun....Don't throw it away if you see no shoots. It does take time.

Yes the variegation is a great way to know if the plant is original. The offspring will not have the yellow striping.

I propagate ivy this way too. I give each of my students a little ivy sprig in a thrift store glass vase and they watch them grow with delight until we plant them in a little pot!

Oh I love this! I just recently took a few cuttings from my pothos and put them in water as a last minute attempt to save my plant as it's been really thin and not growing much of anything. I've had more leaves in a couple weeks on the ones in just water than I have with the original plant in soil for months!

Use a good quality fertilizer to make a vast difference! I just found some really good stuff last month and tried it. Wow! I can not believe the difference, like night and day!
It says for Bonzai on the label, but it is for all indoor plants. I got mine for about 12$ and it is so gentle you can put it in the watering can and water it each week if you wish. I am really turned on to THIS brand. I have used others and not seen the kind of enhancement and life given to my Pothos that this brand does. I used the one with the monstera on the bottle, but they seem to be out of it everywhere around the world (commerce) even, so I got this one that says Bonsai but it also says indoor plants ( in general too). I have been using it and all all all my plants are super happy and have been given new life. It appears to work really quickly too!
Also, I see some of the expert growers on mature plants use some Epsom salts that is pure magnesium, to grow and nourish their plants.
      Hope that helps!

Pothos is supposed to do better and have larger leaves when it's climbing vertically and not trailing downwards !

I’ve had pathos for years, and the only time I’ve had them not grow like crazy are:
      1) Not enough light.
      2) Wayyy too much water.
      3) Too big of a pot (water just sitting in soil)
What helped me was to let it dry out completely one time, then soak it, and wait til the top 2-3 inches are dry to water again. If a week later the soil is still wet, the pot is too big. I would add some perlite to soil when repotting.
      Hope that helps!!

Thank you so much for this video! You showed 2 plants in particular that I wondered about, but hadn't seen in other videos about growing plants in water. The zz and rubber plant. Great to know these can also grow in water.
