What Needs Fixing On My Rolls Royce Phantom

- In this video we take a walk around my 21 year old Rolls Royce Phantom and look at some of the main problems with the car. Wait until the end to find out what the most expensive issue of all could be!
Minor problems! I have 9 Rolls Royces in my collection from a Cloud to a 1992 Corniche. I really love the Phantoms, BUT my Rolls Royce tech warns me about the dramatic upkeep! He says the modules are beginning to fail, resulting in it being a "money pit" to maintain! I trust him because him because he was the only Rolls Royce mechanic at our local dealership for 46 years and has maintained my cars for 30 years!
Wow, 9 cars. Are you UK based? I would love to make a video on them. That’s amazing, it’s where I’d like to get to.
@ChrisEdworthy NOT in the UK, but in the USA. I work on them daily! When there is a problem beyond my ability, the mentioned tech in my previous comment, does the repair. Sadly, he is aging. I do not know how I will proceed when he is unable! I am currently working on a 1968 Fixed-Head Coupe. Again, I love the BMW Phantom, but honestly, I am afraid of them (with all the technology involved)! The dealer here is charging $410.00 per hour just for labor!
Love the starter motor whirr. Almost like a mini Merlin firing up ❤
Thanks, glad you liked it. Thought I’d share a bit more from the drivers seat!
I had a similar phantom , I had the bonnet trims and a window trim replaced , I asked for the old ones , they weren’t damaged and could be refitted if needed , also I changed the orange indicators for white from a phantom convertible , fitted perfectly and refreshed the look , currently running a Wraith , good luck , nice channel
Very nice, that’s a good idea with the indicators. I had a Wraith until February, I loved that. Look me up on Whispers. Thanks for watching
Wow £50K is a lot but we can park that to one side. I think the trim that’s coming apart and the where the plaques were removed because you’ll always be seeing those imperfections and also the wheel trim. From far and not knowing, it looks fantastic until you highlight all the bits that are wrong. Great video as always.
Thanks, I think small jobs first and if I have a good year then maybe look at a second Rolls or maybe the paint.
Great video, Chris! Lots of info in a concise vid. The community will definitely have some suggestions for leather treatment. For the age of the old girl, she's in great nick. Keep the content coming!
Thanks Neil, much appreciated. Thanks for watching!
Chris, I hate to say this, but you have a mear BMW in a (rather shabby) Rolls Royce suit. Anything from 1998 is not a properly engineered Rolls Royce and if Sir Henry Royce was still alive, he would not let the car out of the factory. My suggestion would be to simply use this car as a daily driver until it drops. Sorry but it appears to be the best option. Good luck, take care and all the very best wishes.
Thanks for watching. I hope to keep it going for a long time to come.
It's refreshing to see that even a Roller can have all the issues of another car. These cars are usually presented as so hallowed and beyond flaw that it's hard to imagine say, loose trim on the dash, but they're still cars at the end of the day.
Yes just a car and hand built… a machine is more consistent than a person, so almost more likely to go wrong. Thanks for watching.
Geez. I wouldn't have thought there would be so many trim defects on a car which cost so much new.
Great channel, thank you for the Effort you put into it. What is the latest regarding the Gearbox?
Thanks for the vid, lovely car and minor stuff to fix, keep up the good work
Thanks Simon much appreciated.
I think it looks nice in silver
Thank you. I do like the silver too. There’s just part of me that wants to turn chassis No. 4 back to original. In 20 years when more have been scrapped to look back and say I have an original car. But I guess I don’t need to do the paint anytime soon to do that. Make some money first! Thanks for watching.
Hi Chris, lovely video. I’m not going to be presumptuous and tell you what you should do, I’m sure you are savvy enough to decide for yourself. I’ll give you some thoughts on what I would do.
For £50k you could buy yourself a very decent Corniche Convertible, so I’d be keeping my powder dry with that.
If it were me I’d pick the low hanging fruit first….to be clear I’d get the easier less expensive jobs tackled as a first step. Perhaps getting the leather connolised and brought back. Perhaps the sill cover, or get the car detailed and machine polished to remove any residue from previous badges and stickers. That may also cut a little of the paint back to remove any minor blemishes.
It also lets you see the real state of the car.
What about mechanical issues Chris..? I’m sure there’s video mileage in that too.
Good luck and I look forward to the next one.
John
Thanks, John, I have always wanted a Corniche. Summer road trips with the roof down would be amazing. Thanks for all your thoughts. Let's see where this UA-cam journey takes us!
Hi Chris. I think a lot of the 'one time use' trim could be saved, if, and its a big "if", it could be removed in one piece, say with a hot air gun, - worth a try. It could then be cleaned up, the old fixing tape at the back got off with say a craft knife, then refitted with new two sided fixing tape. I dont think that your quote for a respay would be hard to beat. Try some classic car restoration people, shop around.
Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll have a look around Sussex see who’s good. Thanks for watching.
I think the grille would be stainless steel. If si you could clean those bottom bits with a toothbrush then polish with metal polish.
I think it’s plated, it looks like the top layer is pealing. I’ll have to do some research on it. Thanks for your comments.
Brilliant Video by the way, (just goes to show you)
i'm amazed despite its age that some of the trim fittings inside and outside is so poor and has gaps, coming loose, its a bloody Rolls Royce for heavens sake.. lol... your quote for the spraying is bang out of of kilter, I've spoken to the people who re-spray Bentleys here in Cheshire, guy nearly fell of his Chair, they'd do all of your issues and spray in and fit the 'supposed single usage trim) for well under you've been quoted for the re-spray......
I need to shop around for sure. I do know a paint shop, part of me would like it done by the garage that first owned it. A bit of history, but that’s quite a cost. Thanks for watching.
@@ChrisEdworthy love the channel... keep up the content
Lovely car, but painting one of these would surely be border line insane. I only say this because you end up ploughing so much money in to it that you could buy a later Phantom VII, probably a Series II. I would personally start with finding someone able to repair the leather trim because the interior is where you spend all the time. Many scuffs and so on can be dyed, you can buy plenty of kits you can apply yourself.
I think the leather would be a good starting point. The paint would be great to do, but you're right huge job that I'll never get the money back for... just a labour of love.
P&A wood is a good day out 😊
I’d like to visit again on one of there Saturday Supercar events. Thanks for watching
Was the car previously owned by A.W.Lymn?
If so may be a return visit for this car to their premises in Sneinton Nottingham would make interesting viewing?
Their fleet of cars is impressive the hearse's are also converted Phantom's. It's quite a sight to see their funeral cortege coming down the road. I was a passenger in one of these (maybe this car?) at a family funeral a number of years back. A sad occasion but it's probably one of few times most People in Nottingham have a chance to ride in a Rolls Royce.
Yes, you're correct, I believe it was their first Phantom of this type. Hence it's in their colours. I was thinking of seeing if they would be happy to be involved in a video. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching.
@@ChrisEdworthy Im sure if you approached them you would get a favorable response.
Surely the funeral company were not the owner from new. Having said that I am surprised at the lack of upkeep for a chauffeur driven vehicle.
It was the first demo car at P&A Wood then the funeral company. The upkeep with them I think was ok, but with 28 in their fleet, this being the oldest I think it became less of a priority and then a year or so with another owner who didn't do anything to it really. It just needs some TLC.
It’s Re Connollising (my spelling). I.e. restoring Connolly leather.
Thanks Peter, I’ll look into that further.
Great vid!
@@JamesReviews2 Thanks James… thanks for your continued support of the channel too!!
I love seeing all the little details. At the end of the day, no 20 year old car that has covered over 100,000 miles will be perfect. It is still a wonderful thing.
I don't want to be a pedant, but isn't your drivers side wing mirror don't the whole BMW discolouration thing, or have I miss seen.....
Yes you’re right it is discoloured. Is that a BMW thing? I forgot all about it! Thanks for watching.
@ChrisEdworthy Yep, it is very much a BMW thing. I have seen it on 7 Series of the same era, not sure what the fix is, perhaps new glass. Which could be an issue as I've suspect the Phantom mirrors are unique and hard to find. Or there may be a few specialists out there who can fix it, there usually are.
Can’t you go for a wrap?
I could do, but I think I’d rather keep it silver until I can’t do a proper job. I have no plans to sell her.
I think it looks perfect in it's present silver... go with the flow.?
Get rid, buy a Honda Jazz!
😂 Thanks, I think I’ve found my new financial advisor!!
Would it not be cheaper to paint the blue parts black and call it done.
Good idea! 😂 I'd just like to see it back to be original. Partly why I started UA-cam, to share the experience and maybe that adds a benefit to more than just me, in spending all that money putting her right.
Forget a respray, you can't afford it and the car isn't worth it. Have the car wrapped in blue if the colour is the issue.
I don’t mind the colour, it’s more for the heritage of the car and being an early one, making it right again. One day maybe!!
I am South African, 78. And love Alfas. Please don't waste your money on a respray. Just buy another one. You are brave to drive that blood sucking wallet emptying monster.
I love an Alfa too! Thanks for watching all the way from South Africa. It is a bit of a heavy demand on the wallet. I just love trying to keep an early new era Rolls going.
Yeah I agree. Repaint waste of money. You must think the colour is ok otherwise you would not have bought it.
Re Conolising
Thank you... I'd like that done. It would make a big difference.
Just point this out , came to see faults but got features
Kinda false pretence so it’s a 👎🏿 and I’m off
Thanks, I’m glad the faults are feature!! Maybe raises the value!! 👍
Funny how exspensive car fal apart quicker than cheaper cars
She is 21 years old... I think a few things are down to the funeral company sorting problems themselves and getting it back on the road to work. Fast fixes not necessarily the best fixes! Who knows! Thanks for watching.
Get rid of the rubbish. Buy a 1998 Corolla and all will be well.
😂 Thanks for the advice!
