For future reference: Scott: Baritone - covers bass parts occasionally & often harmonizes in tenor range. Mitch: Tenor/Counter-Tenor - often sings close harmony with Kirstin, has some whistle notes. Kevin: Beatbox/Classically trained cellist - sings tenor parts occasionally. Avi: Bass/Classically trained vocalist - can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor. Kirstin: Mezzo-soprano - has well-controlled whistle notes. Matt: Baritone - replaced Avi on bass, can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor.
@@InstrucTube Ridiculous levels of talent. There is a feature here that is underrated that is used perfectly and to great effect , silence. You cannot have loud or busy without a silent gap. Listen carefully, and there are spaces of utter silence,,, and the total is so much better for it. Wow is right.
Kevin who has perfect pitch said Avi has the unique ability to hear sound spaceing...he described it as he can hear where silence/sounds would fit in music. If you notice the newer music arranged without Avi is missing the silience your describing..it adds emotion & builds the music..( not that it still isn't amazing just different) I thought I was the only one noticing the perfect placement of the silence ...thought I was weird noticing how perfectly the absence of sound help & made the song better until I saw that interview with Kevin.
@@johnnaliggett3625 Hello Johnna. Your observations,, how should I put this,, elevates you greatly, speaks well of your abilities to see and understand. What makes that silence even more spectacular is that it follows the perfect resolve of a chord. Do many performers forget to hold the pivot note of the progression right through the final resolve, leaving feeling off kilter. The other trick these guys all use is to tune the pivot note as the chord changes, so the harmonics remain in tune. Then that moment of silence to let the perfect chord linger in the ear. Genius
I was just listening to that. In one of Mitch's most powerful moments, when he sings, "It's not somebody who's seen the light" you hear his note hanging alone. Everyone else has dropped completely for a single beat, before coming in (with perfect articulation) on the next beat. It's chilling.
You should listen to Run to You. It’s on Pentatonix’s second album, and it has a moment of silence after the third verse. It makes what comes before it powerful. Also, it STILL makes me cry. After 7 years.
Ok I think I'm falling in love with you. I watched your reaction to The Sound of Silence and recommended Hallelujah. I subscribed after that and then found this reaction. The fact that you picked up on Mitch's style and appreciated it so much upped my respect for you exponentially. I love your sensitivity in these two reactions and how you can appreciate both heavy metal and a capella. You have a beautiful soul. Thank you for all of that.
I would like to mention that Avie"s bass voice is classical trained. This is why he can go extremely low. Check out the video A HA from Singapore. Avie will hit a note so low that it blew out the audio system. This video also show cases Mitch's vocal range. Pentatonix has never made a bad video.
@@Tharena People always say that "you will not be sorry" - but to be honest, I was super sorry. I love Pentatonix, but after I watched this - at the beginning when I hadn't seen any other live performances - I thought they were the worst life band ever. I thought "oh, it's all autotune then" after that because the recording quality is so bad I thought they couldn't really sing. Why do people recommend this to newcomers? Do you really want to turn them off Pentatonix?
Kevin, Avi, and Kirsten all have solo channels, and Mitch and Scott have a channel together called SuperFruit. You should check those out as well. Especially Avi's "Change On the Rise". Or, if you love bass, try Avi and Peter Hollens, "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair".
Your reactions are *priceless;* and it’s actually a *JOY* to see how enthralled you are with their music. They are exceptionally talented because it’s not just their rich *voices* but how skilled they are at creating their *vocal arrangements.* I often *prefer* their covers over the original artists! Their new Home EP has “Break My Heart” on it-and I mean NO disrespect & NO offense to the talented young female artist who sings the original; but the depth, movement, rhythm, life & richness they give the song by layering and interspersing their 5 voices is simply beautiful, fun, effervescent, lively-and even more enjoyable! Check that one out & the HOME mash-up - both are superb! God bless!
No, Scott is the one carrying the bass notes while Avi is singing. If you've watched The Sound of Silence (or Scott Hoying's Red Cover) you can hear Scott's bass on full display!
Another stunning rendition they do of a Christmas song (that will let you hear Kevin the beatboxer singing too!) is Mary Did You Know. I definitely agree with the comments suggesting Daft Punk Medley and Love Again, those are wild :)
Your reactions to them are so amazing. I was so happy to see another one! :) As people already said, Scott (blond guy) takes over the bass whenever their bass singer is doing lead. I love when he does that. You actually already heard that in The Sound of Silence, but I know it's difficult to remember everything. Kevin (the beatboxer) is actually a tenor, so he has a higher vocal type. I see people in the comments recommending Imagine and I absolutely second that because not only everyone (including Kevin) have lead parts in there, it's a very moving video and a moving rendition of another amazing classic song.
In a live show Scott would take over the bass if the bass was taking a solo, but in a recording it is 99.99% of the time going to be the bass singer doubled under their own solo. Just listen to the tone. Its CLEARLY Avi's voice, and the tone never changes from when the bass line comes in to the end of the song. Its Avi
After Halleluia...Pentatonix' most chilling, powerful recording is Mary Did You Know. Even if you don't put it on your review list, do yourself a favor and listen on your own. The emotional windstorm that will sweep over you will literally blow you away.
I am so happy I found your channel through your Pentatonix reactions, and I can't wait to see what song/video of theirs you will be reacting to next! Welcome to the Pentaholics community, we are always happy to see new members join 🧡
I told you in your 1st reaction that 1. you'll get the feels when you listen to it and 2. you will never stop getting requests from us Pentaholics! lol....I always cry when I hear them sing this song and when they sing Imagine (by John Lennon) and when Superfruit covers Katy Perry's Rise...omg...you do go into another realm but seeing them live??? no other experience will beat that!
Pentatonix is my favorite musical group! I love seeing new people listen to them. My husband freaked out the first time he heard them and now we love rocking out to them in the car. It’s unbelievable how good they are
I am a home hospital teacher and work with students who can not be in school for a variety of reasons, health, emotional disorders, surgeries, etc. I see two sisters once a week that were born with a genetic disorder. They are dependent 24 hours a day for care. They cannot walk, talk, or use their arms and are blind. When I see them I often play music for them. I played this song and the expression of sheer joy went across the face of one of the girls. It brought her utter delight. I will never forget that look on her face. That's the magic of this song, especially sung by the Pentatonix. ,
The first time I heard this, it was my first time hearing Pentatonix. I was left speechless. I never really cared for Hallelujah, or at least not the overplayed Jeff Buckley version, but this version completely changed my mind on it. I still go to their video on it regularly. For a new artist/song reaction suggestion, I suggest looking up Dimash Kudaibergen. Look up his debut on a Chinese singing competition show singing S.O.S. he is from Kazakhstan and the video is a few years old now but a great intro to him. People all over the world agree he has the best voice in the world and he will blow your mind. You will quickly find yourself down the rabbit hole with his performances. Happy Easter!
I said "Wow," after a pause, and I've heard this many times! Their harmonies and dynamics are stunning, but even more than that, they "feel," the music and make others feel it too.
I am loving your Pentatonix reactions. They really are something very special. You’ve gotten a ton of requests for them already so I want to recommend something related but also great in its own right: Home Free. They are a more country a cappella group but they are so good. I think a great one to react to is their cover of “Ring of Fire” (featuring Avi from Pentatonix). The arrangement is unique and fun and the combined bass of Avi and Tim will blow you away.
I have heard several versions of Hallelujah, but I can say that this is my favorite version yet. It absolutely took me to a higher place the first time I heard it and I still get goosebumps every time I hear it. So at least one person out here feels ya! Awesome reaction!
They have a live version of this song on their channel from the Pentatonix Christmas Special. It really is all totally live, no effects! Also watch their Daft Punk Medley. If you want to be even more blown away by epic bass singing, listen to some of Avi’s solo stuff. His EP that recently came out is so spiritual and so moving, has this really nice folky, acoustic sound. Just let the lyrics wash over you, he has so much soul. Also, several years ago, Avi featured on a track by another acapella group called Home Free, who do country acapella. The track is a cover of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. The bass in HF can go lower than Avi! And the beatboxer, just OMG. HF’s beatboxer you quite literally don’t believe all those drum beats come from him. In their live shows the beatboxer does a drum solo for about 10 minutes while the others rest their voice. There are plenty of fan recorded videos of this floating around, the more recent the better coz he only improves with time!
And more for your listening pleasure: for that bass: Home Free Ring of Fire featuring Avi Kaplan, Avi's solo Change on the Rise, and for more bass: Chains.
I've seen/heard this 1000 times and it still gets me emotionally. They are genius! I think you're ready for their Daft Punk Medley and their Love Again (a PTX original.) Both of these are very different from what you've seen so far and will blow your mind in a whole new way!
I’m here in Sept. 2024!! They have to be in my opinion the best acapella group I’ve ever ever heard!! Scott and Avi both can do bass and I’m really sad that Avi left the group awhile back!? They covered that position real quick and he’s astronomical!!❤❤❤
If you ever can't believe they're really doing it with just their voices alone there's a video titled something like Pentatonix proves they don't need microphones. However it is full of spoilers for songs you have not heard them do yet. I would also like you to listen to two songs they do, Angels We Have Heard on High and Carol of the Bells.
I'm 68 years old and just discovered pentatonic. What I find so amazing is at first you don't even realise there's no music. They deserve every success. Please keep your feet on the ground. Bring pleasure to people of all ages all over the world and you will all be happy. ThankYou so much. 😊🤗
Scott Hoying is capable of bass so it’s most probably him as he alternated a lot with Avi but Mitch is in his own as counter tenor mezzo soprano mixed voice Kirsty is alto soprano and Kevin is baritone tenor percussion
When you watched Sound of Silence, the black man IS the new person. He has a deep bass voice. On this the bearded guy left out in his own. YOULL love the Christmas album
They really are amazing. Missing Avi, but glad they still doing good. Also, whenever Avi was in the group, him and Scott would change roles. As Avi sang, Scott will end up becoming the temporary bass, since he has an amazing voice not just for singing. Anyhow, I am so glad you choose to react to "Hallelujah". It truly was a gorgeous song. I feel you man, no matter how many times you hear it/watch it/experience it, it's always as good as the first time you heard it.
This is one of those performances that never fails to move people. Even people that don't particularly like the song, or who aren't necessarily fans of acapella music are moved by it. I'll say this...They could make the Gods themselves cry.
CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS IS?! I honestly NEVER get tired of watching reaction videos to this song. I love that I could really tell that you were as flabbergasted as I am at the sheer amazingness. 😍
One of my favorite things is watching people just discovering Pentatonix. It's fun to watch music lovers knocked speechless. Have fun! It's a very deep rabbit hole!
No, he wasn't. He would've in a live performance, but in the studio Avi is doubled on the solo and bass line. Just use your ears, you can clearly CLEARLY hear its Avi. It's kind of crazy just how many people believe Scott takes over the bass line but they can't hear its Avi's voice
My daughter and I sat front row at their St. Louis show (7 yrs old and her first concert!), and Oh...My...Goodness! It was totally worth every penny! I’ve watched them from their very beginning and they have a lifetime fan in me. Scott was on the edge of the stage and looked right at my daughter and waved and seeing her eyes light up was amazing! She can sing along with every one of their songs. You should watch them sing “Can’t Hold Us” and “Drummer Boy”. Amazing.
They always floor me. I'm not religious and I had a really emotional reaction too. It's the way it should be. The last verse, apparently the point is that you don't have to be religious. AFreakingmazing! ♥️🖤♥️🖤

4:05 to answer your question, it’s a pre studio recording and they’re lip syncing the music video. All of the voices are theirs. Avi is still doing all the bass parts.
@@nadivkaspi6211 I've heard Scott take over during live performances, so it definitely is Scott... if you listen closely (albeit with a very good sound system, otherwise you'd probably miss it) you can hear the bass notes are ever so slightly less deep in tone than what Avi normally produces...
It is Scott, they've talked about it before and if you go see them live, he takes over the bass. They usually record it the same way, they would perform it.

don't you dare let some Idiots in life tell you it's not manly to cry when you hear beautifull music that's just stupid I'm female but I love to listen to this and other songs with just my Headphones on... lying in bed or on the couch closed eyes and no lights.. try it it's even more awesome just listen with no distraction :P
It's like the sounds vibrate every emotion in you...if it didn't bring a tear, you wouldn't be human.
For future reference:
Scott: Baritone - covers bass parts occasionally & often harmonizes in tenor range.
Mitch: Tenor/Counter-Tenor - often sings close harmony with Kirstin, has some whistle notes.
Kevin: Beatbox/Classically trained cellist - sings tenor parts occasionally.
Avi: Bass/Classically trained vocalist - can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor.
Kirstin: Mezzo-soprano - has well-controlled whistle notes.
Matt: Baritone - replaced Avi on bass, can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor.
Yes-exactly!
Avi sings overtones. Check him out doing a long low note while at the same time doing the lion sleeps tonight
Thanks for that insight.
You should seriously check out Kevin’s solo
cover of Marian hills “Down”....you will lose your damn mind when you watch it.
It is a serious roller coaster ride
I was just about to suggest this!
Honestly all of his solo stuff, even the worst one is better than most other music I've heard. He's a damn genius.
@@InstrucTube Ridiculous levels of talent. We all know about his amazing beatboxing, and wonderful voice, and Cello skills that earned him the notice of Yo-Yo-Ma and Principle Cellist for the Yale Symphony for 2 years and a scholarship to a prestigious Chinese college where he became fluent in Mandarin. BUT, did you know that he also plays Saxophone so well that he was invited to play, live, for a PBS series that showcases young talent at Carnegie Hall? He was 17 at the time. ua-cam.com/video/cg-WQl3YCVY/v-deo.html
@@Spartan_777 Yep, I'm hoping for the day he does a solo piece with his sax in the studio.
It is not so much a compliment from me to you,, it just is. You own it. Here is another example of the same thing,, but in dance. Galen Hooks is the Choreographer,, she is the first performer at 2:00,, ah,,, but the second dancer is special,, at 3::18. You enjoy,, I know you will see it. ua-cam.com/video/-L4SkC5qIDk/v-deo.html
"I don't know if there's a tear coming to my eye, or if I'm about to get goosebumps...."
The answer is YES.
Yup. Goosebumps. Tear. Smile. More goosebumps. Big tears. Another smile. And a big sigh! Wow.
Hallelujah and Sound of Silence are my favorites too. They appeal to all age groups. May God continue to bless and protect them.
I would like to mention that Avie"s bass voice is classical trained. This is why he can go extremely low. Check out the video A HA from Singapore. Avie will hit a note so low that it blew out the audio system. This video also show cases Mitch's vocal range. Pentatonix has never made a bad video.
It’s spelled “Avi”. No e. It’s short for Avriel.
Echo the A-ha Singapore Star Vista. You will not be sorry. Your headset might be. :) And Any performance of Natural Disaster.
@@drieuxkoeppel8152 Thanks
@@Tharena People always say that "you will not be sorry" - but to be honest, I was super sorry. I love Pentatonix, but after I watched this - at the beginning when I hadn't seen any other live performances - I thought they were the worst life band ever. I thought "oh, it's all autotune then" after that because the recording quality is so bad I thought they couldn't really sing.
Why do people recommend this to newcomers? Do you really want to turn them off Pentatonix?
Actually, it’s Kevin and Avi together blowing the speaker. I think Kevin does a lip roll thing..
Change on the Rise is amazing!
Chains and It knows me also
Yes! Check out Avi's solo stuff 👍
yeah, he needs to listen to Change on the Rise
He also needs to listen to Avi sing 'Ring of Fire' with Home Free
Their DaftPunk Medley is fantastic. A great early one is their Evolution of Music.
I love it when he scoots up in his chair cause he’s getting into it and wants to pay better attention😄
I've seen this a million times and I still felt every emotion with you brother.
“Blowing up my comments section...”
Yeeeeeah.... sorry about that- kinda our thing.
Pentatonix fans are constantly looking for new reactors. We have so much fun with this.
@@leechowning2712 and new fans!
It is so wonderful seeing someone getting sucked into the PTX universe ❤️
You should react to Avi's Change on the Rise! It's dope.
my favourite of Avi so far
I just discovered Change on the Rise about 2 days ago and I have that on repeat ❤️
How awesome is that song!! 😍😍
God bless!
Oh- here’s the link for “Break My Heart”
ua-cam.com/video/fn4JZ58oT-Y/v-deo.html
even though i've been listening to this song more times than i can count, it still gives me goose bumps...
No, Scott is the one carrying the bass notes while Avi is singing. If you've watched The Sound of Silence (or Scott Hoying's Red Cover) you can hear Scott's bass on full display!
At a live show, yes it would be Scott. In the recording its Avi's voice. It is Indisputably Avi
Another stunning rendition they do of a Christmas song (that will let you hear Kevin the beatboxer singing too!) is Mary Did You Know.
I definitely agree with the comments suggesting Daft Punk Medley and Love Again, those are wild :)
Gopikachu ‘Mary Did You Know’ is their best work, imho.
@@melissaisloud7404 it really is impeccable 😍.
Your reactions to them are so amazing. I was so happy to see another one! :)
As people already said, Scott (blond guy) takes over the bass whenever their bass singer is doing lead.
Its Avi
@@nadivkaspi6211 I already had this conversation here and I explained why I think it's Scott. So I'm just going to agree to disagree.
After Halleluia...Pentatonix' most chilling, powerful recording is Mary Did You Know. Even if you don't put it on your review list, do yourself a favor and listen on your own. The emotional windstorm that will sweep over you will literally blow you away.
I watched this when it first came out and lived it, now I’m watching it and all I can think in 2020 is ‘good social distancing’
this song just reaches something deep inside of me that I can't even start to explain
I blame shrek
Ditto
Me too
I am so happy I found your channel through your Pentatonix reactions, and I can't wait to see what song/video of theirs you will be reacting to next! Welcome to the Pentaholics community, we are always happy to see new members join 🧡
Same here!! I saw his first response, then watched the next two... love seeing people react to pentatonix
That's the magic of this song, especially sung by the Pentatonix. ,
Take a listen to there cover of John Lennons IMAGINE. they kill that too,it also has a great message in it.
Check out their “Mary did you know” it will blow the rest away
I agree! That one is one of my favorites!
I have so many 'favorites'...but yes, that is one of the top five.
I agree, Dimash is THE most talented singer I have ever heard in my entire life. He is perfect in every way, and I really do mean perfect literally.
Rufus wainwright was the main version from shrek
Mitch's voice is soooo good. I thought there were 2 female vocalists when I first heard it!
Not once have I ever seen someone listen to Pentatonix and think bad of their voices or the song, just always in awe.
You've been Mitchslapped! I'm honestly just going through all of these reaction videos because I enjoy people's reactions to his part.
And more for your listening pleasure: for that bass: Home Free Ring of Fire featuring Avi Kaplan, Avi's solo Change on the Rise, and for more bass: Chains.
Also, Avi's bass note right at the end is mind-blowing.
Watching people react to Pentatonix songs/covers for the first time is my new hobby
YES THE LIVE VERSION 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Imagine is another one that’s gonna blow your mind
Aha live in Singapore!
It is Scott that picks up the bass!
Stay safe, stay sane, be well
Imagine is also a great one
Bro I get chills every freaking time I hear them too.
New subscriber alert. Loving your pentatonix reactions!
When you watched Sound of Silence, the black man IS the new person. He has a deep bass voice. On this the bearded guy left out in his own. YOULL love the Christmas album
imkt716 the Christmas albums ROCK!
I feel you man, no matter how many times you hear it/watch it/experience it, it's always as good as the first time you heard it.
you should definitely react to ptx "aha" live at Singapore Vista it is amazing and shows off mitch's voice
Oh, and the Daft Punk medley and their cover of Imagine Dragons "Radioactive."
If you like Avi's tone you will like his solo "change on the rise" for sure! Make sure to watch it. I'd like to see you react to it.
This is one of those performances that never fails to move people. Even people that don't particularly like the song, or who aren't necessarily fans of acapella music are moved by it. I'll say this...They could make the Gods themselves cry.
Got to watch them perform this live - and it's friggin spectacular.
Avi is one of my favorites. He has this amazing talent that lets him sing two notes at once! Ugh I melt 😍😍😍
I got tears in my eyes when I see your reaction
Your face at the end of Mitchs' verse, was my face the whole time I watched/heard him live 2 months ago! He is seriously phenomenal!!
Best version ever , all awesome singers , but Scott is my favourite . Unbeatable PTX they absolutely own your soul. 😘
P O W E R F U L and I have listened to this song for years. And a tear in my eye again!!
I absolutely love their “Imagine” rendition ❤️
Tear to my eye everyone I listen to imagine
CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS IS?! I honestly NEVER get tired of watching reaction videos to this song. I love that I could really tell that you were as flabbergasted as I am at the sheer amazingness. 😍
That's when you know music is good! Shivers, goosebumps, and tears! I turn into a puddle of emotion.
One of my favorite things is watching people just discovering Pentatonix. It's fun to watch music lovers knocked speechless. Have fun! It's a very deep rabbit hole!
I have watched many reactions to Hallelujah by Pentatonix and the result is always the same----complete awe and amazement. Deserved!
Scott was doing the bass when avi was singing
No, he wasn't. He would've in a live performance, but in the studio Avi is doubled on the solo and bass line. Just use your ears, you can clearly CLEARLY hear its Avi.
It's kind of crazy just how many people believe Scott takes over the bass line but they can't hear its Avi's voice
I also suggest their piece "run to you" also perhaps if your interested in another good acapella group I reccomend Voctave
I love Run to You!!!
You should also look at Home Free. They did cover of Ring of Fire with Avi from Pentatonix. The Bass is CRAZY
Amazing.
Love your reactions! You have to check out pentatonix singing ‘Mary did you know’. They are really known for that-stunning. God Bless
I just figured out how to connect my headphones, not very techy kind of girl, but DAMN what a difference!!!!!
They always floor me. I'm not religious and I had a really emotional reaction too. It's the way it should be. The last verse, apparently the point is that you don't have to be religious. AFreakingmazing! ♥️🖤♥️🖤
Hey Jase, I havent seen you look at the video "Mary Did You Know" by Pentatonix. It is amazingly powerful....you think some bring you goose bumps, "Mary Did You Know" will give you goosebumps, chills, and move you probably like never before. Check it out. Oh amd the video to it is amazing too as always! My favorite
One of my all time favorite songs! Love pentatonix. That note @6.55min gives me shivers and I get choked up every time I hear it!
My mom died September 12th, 2017. I listened to this rendintion for months before and after she died of cancer. So powerful and so beautiful. I love watching it impact you like it did me.
You should check out Tim Fousts’ voice in HomeFree. His range from the lowest bass and up 5 octaves is simply amazing
If you like Pentatonix you should check out Home Free. They were also on the Sing Off. Their bass, Tim Foust, is on par with Avi (maybe even a little better in my opinion) and their beatboxer Adam is out of this world. They're hands down my favorite acapella group.
4:05 to answer your question, it’s a pre studio recording and they’re lip syncing the music video. All of the voices are theirs. Avi is still doing all the bass parts.
Yes! Thank you! I don't know why so many people believe it's Scott, it clearly isn't.
Watch their live Christmas special where they sing this. It's all Scott, all day... And it's glorious.
Watched your reaction video to this and Soubd of Silence...came to you as a recommendation as I have followed Pentatonix for year because of how epic (the only word that describes them). Really lovely to see your reactions to them...it shows how incredible they are and how much those voices can hit an emotional nerve
The

I love watching people listen to Pentatonix for the first time. They're life-changing.
Whenever I need something to uplift my soul, I listen to this song, close my eyes, and breathe in the lyrics and the intensity of their voices. It’s just so powerful to completely surrender to their voices.
