You should definitely listen to ptx imagine or bohemian rhapsody. They sound amazing and in imagine you can listen to Kevins voice. He is an amazing singer
If you think Silent Night was impressive, you should hear Mary Did You Know? …. it will be a total feast for your ears. It's an incredible arrangement as on PTX can do. Truly enjoy your commentary. Blessings.
to me the amazing thing about Avi is just not the low tone, but how he is still able to be heard in a single mic setting. A lot of that is about arrangement, but you can still hear his tones pretty well even when the higher parts are happening, and higher parts will always be more present within a setting like this. He has a ton of power at that low register that is just uncommon.
Can you believe they made Silent Night new and original? Your reaction was great to watch. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I listen to this song or "PTX Light in the Hallway" to relax. Many of their Christmas songs are amazing - Mary Did You Know, Carol of the Bells and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (another Grammy winner) are a few favorites. BTW, Avi is a basso profundo, the lowest of bass singers, yet he can go almost to tenor range and has a great falsetto (as in Light in the Hallway). Almost forgot - he does overtone singing, too!
Those “little flashes of unique ideas” is just a PTX spin they add onto a song they sing. And every song they cover has a PTX spin to it. That’s what makes them special and unique. Very talented group of singers 🙏🏾
Just The Trio opened this up. They’ve been singing together since they were 10 years old! Avi is a basso profundo with a 4th ledger-line bass clef F#! Amazing tessitura! Of course Mitch is a counter-tenor!
You MUST react to all of their "Evolution" videos. Though I should warn you...stopping in the middle of those videos to comment on the general musicality and individual talents is next to impossible.
So excited to catch you at the beginning of your discovery of Pentatonix!!! I love watching people discover how amazing and talented they all are. Please continue to react to their catalogue of music. There’s so much ear candy. 😍 I would agree with everyone who is recommending Mary Did You Know. Especially if you’d like to hear Kevin singing vs just beatboxing. It I would go a step further and say watch the live version from their first holiday tv special. It’s stunning and simply breathtaking. 🥰 Looking forward to more PTX reactions!
alot of people can do it, it's a common Russian/Asian way Singing Style, also a traditon in german and slavic male choirs. It's just not used in Pop Music, thats why US American people act suprised about it, they live in a bubble.
I taught myself how to overtone sing and it's not actually that hard once you figure it out once. It's all about tounge placement in the mouth to allow most air through the nose to hum whilst only allowing a tiny amount out the mouth to create a whistling noise.
Whether it's a particularly 'difficult' or 'common' thing I think is overlooking the point. Listening to Avi use his overtone signing, he is QUITE skilled in his placement and the crystal clarity of the sound that comes forth. Just because I've not heard other overtone singers with such control and precision accuracy doesn't mean they don't exist-- but doesn't mean that should invalidate my enjoyment of Avi's particular skill and sound :) If you haven't looked at it Carl, I would highly recommend doing a quick UA-cam search and watching him, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
@@Falindae exactly! tho I knew about overtone singing long before I knew about PTX at all, but HOW he does it and how HE sounds it's just something else.. da skillz, & lucky anatomy too I guess :)) (check Huun Huur Tu and Anna-Maria Hefele C_C )
What's really special here is that it's a live performance. All one take. You couldn't have known how near the end you were when you stopped to explain in detail how Avi was producing that sublime sound, but for those of us who know every note of this recording, it was SO painful to know that you were going to miss the effect of that final "night" in contrast to the previous iterations.
My favorite PTX song/cover is White Winter Hymnal and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (where Kevin does some amazing percussion work). They're arrangements are always stunning.
It's hard to believe that Kirstie, Scott, and Mitch all went to high school together...so talented and amazing!! I love all of them so much! React to more Pentatonix please!
Because of the setting, live, but "still" for want of a better term, you can really see where in their bodies, they hold their tone. This vid of ptx, and more importantly the vocal-nerds like you who react to it,mhave taught me so much about placing voice inbody.
I Always LOVE PTX. I especially love how you do your reactions, being a Vocal Coach you can explain to me what is really happening! LOVE Your Reactions!!
I like your reactions to Pentatonix. I've heard other vocal coaches reactions and they tend to stop the videos at the worst possible times and their comments for some reason don't interest me. Sorry, maybe because I'm not a singer, but your comments are great. One of the reasons Pentatonix is so good is because of all the little twists and layers that they put in their arrangements. They work with an arranger by the name of Ben Bram. Please continue to do Pentatonix reactions, there's a plethora of videos for you to choses from.
Not only does Avi sing that low, it's so soft and smooth. Not the gravely rumble that so many basses have to use to get those ultra-low notes. Sigh. I miss him.
PTX is an amazing group! I love this video so much! This improvisation in the end of a well known song touches my soul. I think they truly have sung this part with their souls. A feast for my ears. Thanks, Carl, for your reaction.
Carl! I've just watched your past two Pentatonix videos, and I SINCERELY look forward to more! I would highly recommend 'Imagine' next, as I think that one particularly showcases each voice beautifully (including a bit of early Kevin singing!) If you are interested in Kevin's singing solo, he has been taking voice lessons and has very much grown as a singer in his own right over the past several years-- he's an incredibly multi-talented young man, truly a picture of excellence and hard work! Try his "Sign of the Times" video? Thank you so much for putting time into listening to Pentatonix! I wish you well on your journey of discovery!
I think your vocal coach’s ear will most appreciate their versions of Imagine, as many have said (both technically and for what the video represents), and DEFINITELY I Can’t Help Falling In Love aWith You. It is, quite simply, breathtaking in its subtlety - it is restrained brilliance.
Welcome. 16 Million subscribers just high fiving you every time you react to a Pentatonix video. Don't stop, please. We will swarm to your channel to see good reactors. - Bill
They have so much amazing music. Then you have Scott and Mitch Tenor and Baritone who have an offshoot group called SuperFruit. The beatboxer does sing and he has his own channel where he sings, loops, plays his cello and beatboxes. Sometimes all at once. Kevin Olusola is his name. Avi has his own solo channel and EP under Avriel and the Sequoias and Kristie also had a solo EP. They are fabulous together and on their own.
@@drieuxkoeppel4157 A typo is zero reason to be rude to people. Maybe if you capitalize the entire thing I'll get it. PTX fans have a rep as being friendly but overbearing and it's crap like that that creates that rep.
I think also you should listen to one of their more modern covers, maybe their Daft Punk medley to see how they handle a non-classic / less melodic style song. You need to see why one of the judges of the Sing Off called them masters of the vocal remix! They won their first (of three) grammys for their Daft Punk Medley - they recorded it in a bedroom cupboard and recorded the video in the kitchen using Mitch's iPad
I love, love, love everything from them! I do have to say though that my VERY favorites are the covers of Imagine and Bohemian Rhapsody. Just killer period!
Home Free's bass, Tim Foust, is magnificent and can even sing slightly lower than Avi. The two basses in "Ring of Fire" show off the different tones of their voices--both wonderful. All the singers in Home Free are excellent, but if you're interested in bass singing, "Ring of Fire" is a must.
Yet another great reaction! Subscribed. It was such a shock when Avi left the group but when you listen to Sage & Stone you get a better understanding of his need for a connection to nature and a slower pace. His voice is truly unique. He does a cameo in Home Free's cover of Ring of Fire where he and Tim Faust (another spectacular base with an incredible range) hit some really great low notes. I'd love to see your take on that (as someone else has mentioned in the comments). And you have to listen to Avi's overtone singing. I want to hear your explanation of how he is able to do it.
You should react to Home Free. I recommend “Ring of Fire”. They do that song with Avi. They also have a bass singer who sings just as low if not lower.
I love Pentatonox. You also need to see ring of fire were Avi sings with Tim Foust, if you want low singing. Or Avi with Peter Hollens "Black is the colour of my true loves hair." That's were you can hear Avi's low notes.
Ok, the next one you should react to is their brand new version of Sound of Silence. Their new bass singer, Matt, is with them and it's phenomenal! I'd love to hear what you think of it.
It’s cool to hear a coach react more to the base or lower registers. You never really hear that and I’ve learned a lot even tho I’m a soprano 2 myself😅 thanks for the content!
It would be interesting to know what you think of the Daft Punk medley (they won a Grammy for arranging) and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (another Grammy). Kevin has a lovely voice, and we do not get to hear it as often as we would prefer. I feel Kevin's best work is on Imagine, but a reaction to that one would be blocked in the US for copyright reasons, so don't bother with that. Just enjoy it, like the rest of us do! Avi has some new solo work out now, and if you dig a solid low bass check out Home Free, a US Country a Capella group. You won't be sorry!
I love your reactions to Pentatonix and I look forward to seeing more. On another note, I don't know if you meant to do this but it was so cool how your ending sounded just like a guitar lol
There’s a lot of stuff from PTX to react Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary did you Know, A ha live at Singapore, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Making Christmas or God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen
