I think "Shad wants a Mary Sue" is pretty on brand.
When a female character accomplishes anything, he complains they are a "Mary Sue." and so we should hate that character.
Any time a male character is anything other than shallow wish-fullfilment power fantasy, he complains that the character needs to possess more of the traits people associate with Mary Sues.
He's unbelievably shallow. His lack of self-awareness is legendary.

Mary Sue is supposed to be an overly perfect auctorial self Insert though. Meaning to apply it to a movie would only be correct if the director saw himself in the figure.
Regarding shad it's spot on though. That whiny little incel IS trying to self Insert the hero he wants to be seen as into the story, which would turn out to be as depressingly shallow, empty and uninspiring as everything else he touches.

Its really telling about shad's mindset that upon seeing the first shot of superman crashing into the snow his responce is to say he's weak, deafeated, battered. His first responce is to call him a weak pathetic loser whereas when i saw it my first thought is empathy. I thought "oh no, superman, what happened?" And as it went on i was rooting for him to not give up.
Shad sees a bloody superman and judges him instead of having empathy or compasion and thinks he is not someone worthy of idolization. That is just such a perfect example of toxic masculinity

This is such a great point that made me reevaluate my initial thoughts on the scene. I believe it was along the lines of "Holy sh*t! What could have done this?!" which then led to theories of what it could be and how it would be great to see Superman overcome whatever has been able to put him in this state. Never a thought of Supes being "weak" or "pathetic." I know he's strong, this just implies to me that he's facing something even *stronger*.

So like... is this the first time Shad's ever seen a movie trailer? Because showing the hero defeated is pretty common, especially in franchise action movies. It makes the viewer think, "Wow, I know the kind of things this guy's fought before, so I have to see what did THIS to him, and how he's able to overcome it!" Off the top of my head, see also: Iron Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises, Infinity War, Ant-Man 3. Admittedly some of those missed the mark, but the trailers got people hyped.
Also to look at a cute dog in a red cape and think "This is stupid, nobody wants this," instead of, "Oh god, they're going to sell so much merch," really shows how out of touch he is.

Most art turns out to be "woke" if you take an honest look at it. There were Jewish people and gay people in Hollywood who found ways to put anti-racist and anti-homophonic messages in movies even in the 50s, for instance, and of course Star Trek was always woke, the notion of people criticizing the latest Star Trek incarnations for being too leftist is laughable.
I think there are a couple things going on. 1) Creative people tend to be progressive, because they can imagine a better world, and 2) Progressive messages, despite how propaganda has turned so many people against progressivism, naturally resonate with human beings, and so (well done) "woke" art just tends to be better (note better doesn't mean always good, in an age where everything is slop it will still be slop).
The difference is that back in the day, the messages were obscured by just enough separation from the actual politics of the day, and the art was actually well made, making it easy for reactionaries to not notice and just appreciate the art. Nowadays, the perfect storm of reactionaries becoming entirely consumed by their political grievances and media being reduced to soulless corporate cash grabs has made it so that the same "woke" messages that were already there are just more visiblely political

His idea of a good Superman film is one where there is no Clark Kent, Kent farm, or secondary characters, and Superman is a golden god who faces no real challenges from beginning to end and punches all his problems. That sounds like a boring film.

      @@NangkeDrawsstuff Ironically, ChatGPT had this to say;
"Yes, Zack Snyder's portrayal of Superman in Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) can be described as "deconstructionist."
In traditional superhero narratives, characters like Superman are often idealized as paragons of virtue and justice. However, Snyder's take on Superman challenges this idealization, offering a more grounded, morally complex version of the character. The films explore the consequences of his immense power, the impact of his arrival on Earth, and the existential and philosophical questions surrounding his role in a world that is often uncertain or hostile toward him.
The deconstructionist approach here strips away some of the optimism and simplicity typically associated with Superman, showing him grappling with the burden of being different and the weight of responsibility. Instead of being an unquestioned symbol of hope, Snyder's Superman is more nuanced, unsure of his place in the world, and often facing public fear and distrust, which complicates his journey as a hero.
In essence, Snyder's Superman isn't just a perfect, unflawed hero-he's a character who must deal with the human and moral implications of his god-like status, which is a hallmark of a deconstructionist approach to superhero storytelling."

Am I crazy, or does it seem like Shad is confusing the concept of "desconstructing" Superman (critically examining the Superman mythos and analyzing why it works, its strengths, its shortcomings, etc) with "destroying" Superman, as in like, literally destroying, killing, or merely injuring him etc.
I mean, Superman being injured is not (by itself) any form of deconstruction of the character or the mythos, it's literally just a basic aspect of pretty much any Superman story. I can't think of a single Superman story in which he isn't injured or at least tested in some serious way. But it seems like Shad sees Superman being injured and goes "James Gunn is going to deconstruct Superman" and it really feels like he doesn't understand what the word "deconstruct" actually means...
I already had a pretty low opinion of Shad's level of media literacy, but if he truly is mixing up "deconstruction" with "destruction", then he's even worse at this than I thought 🤷

While that is funny, I don't think it's actually what's happening here. I think the truth is far more boring.
Conservative dogma currently mandates that any and all deconstructive media is bad (and possibly woke) which means every conservative commentator has to tow that line. Unfortunately, like with all things they get angry about on the regular, they never actually learned what it is, so they're incapable of identifying it in the media they're critiquing. In this case, Shad has picked up that portraying heroes as downtrodden or unable to properly deal with the forces thrown at them is a thing that often happens in deconstructive media, so here he saw something that kind of looked like that and assumed it must be deconstructing Superman. Still very silly, but not quite on the level that you were suggesting lol.

12:10 you know, a common thing I hear from people who don't like superman is "I can't connect with a character that is all powerful", which to me has always sounded like a writing issue on the part of those introducing us to superman rather than a conceptual flaw. In this opening shot, Gunn is aiming to dispel that idea right away while also adding some form of intrigue: what could be so powerful as to make superman look like frigging yamcha? It humanized a character that a lot of audiences have felt is just a clunky Jesus metaphor for too long.
So I find it funny that shad is like "NO, I WANT SUPERMAN TO BE ALL POWERFUL AND FOR MOST PEOPLE TO FAIL TO GET THE CORE OF HIS CHARACTER"

Because he's unfamiliar with the comics, Shad can't recognise one of the most common comic book tropes; the hero defeated. It is incredibly common for the cover of a superhero comic to feature the hero on his knees, broken, defeated or even dead. This is supposed to make you wonder how Superman gets out of this situation, so you buy the comic to find out. Over the years the covers of Superman comics have shown him getting beaten up by Lex Luthor, getting beaten up by Lois, getting beaten up by Jimmy, getting beaten up by a dragon, getting beaten up by tiny green men, getting beaten up by empty clothing, getting beaten up by a giant ant, getting beaten up by a little kid, getting beaten up by a gorilla, getting beaten up by a different gorilla, getting beaten up by yet another gorilla (comics really loved gorillas back in the day), getting beaten up by himself and getting beaten up by multiple versions of himself as well as depicting him being dead multiple times (even before Death of Superman) and one where he's being ridden like a bronco by a pervy cowboy. Those are all real covers.
The point is, showing a defeated Superman is not new, has been common since the Silver Age and is particularly common as an opening hook used to intrigue the audience. Shad thinks that his unfamiliarity with the source material doesn't matter and can be hand waved away, but it leaves him open to missing obvious tropes of the genre like this one.

When I was learning how to write Mon stories (aka anything that has kind of a monster element akin to Pokemon), one of the tips i got ages ago from a Pokemon forum was that to make people care for the mons, whether it be your own creatures or when writing a Pokemon and Digimon fanfic (and this can apply to any Mon genre), they need to have some sort of moment that establishes the bond between the creature and the human/trainer stand-in. Example is the famous Ash is willing to sacrifice himself for his Pikachu who throughout the first episode had been nothing but a jerk to him, but then Pikachu saves Ash from the hundreds of Spearows.
These same tips apllied to pet characters.
Krypto is doing just that, he's saving Superman. He's establishing the close bond he has with Superman immediately and he's doing his best to help him out during his lowest point. And at this point Superman depends on him and Krypto is probably the only one who can help him.

    2. "I don't care about James Gunn or the movies he's directed before." You don't care about who the director of a movie is, what his track record is? I watched him a bit back when he did primarily medieval stuff, but even back then he kept going on about things like how "this is how they ACTUALLY held their bows. None of the historical researchers agree with me, but they're all wrong." Trying to one-up people who have studied those things for their entire life with a few paintings he happened to find that kinda look that way if you squint a bit and ignore any other explanation of and also the fact that he personally found it easier to aim that way.

Snyder fans are impossibly weird in their warped interpretation of who Superman is. Let alone a bunch of mostly and supposedly straight men pining with strong homoerotic overtones over the muscular appearance of their hero's body, they also just... want a Superman who punches the shit out of things. Like, they want him to wail on a big alien and level a city, , and kill... and think that's cool and good.
And they see a Superman that saves a kitten from a tree or who helps teach some kids a life lesson and sees that as weakness somehow, rather than an icon of strength. Same kind of people who think The Last Jedi was bad because Luke didn't go full on John Wick with a lightsaber at the end.

If Shad actually grew up loving superman in the cartoons and movies, i.e. he turns 40 this year, so this means mostly the Christopher Reeve movies and the DCAU, Smallville and Lois & Clark, like most of us old millennials. And if he loved those superman depictions rather than some deconstruction/fanfiction he wrote in his head about them (possibly due to functional media illiteracy, completely misunderstanding the clear depictions in front of him because he is either incompetent at understanding media or that is what he wanted to anyway). There is no way someone who loves how superman is actually depicted in those pieces of media, there is no way this trailer wouldn't make him optimistic for the film. He feels very DCAU. I will make a few comments on break down in response to this as I go.

For anyone who doesnt know the character, all they hear is how powerful he is, so starting with him actually wounded and beaten is intriguing, it begs the question how that happens... which is exactly the bloody job of a TEASER ffs. 37:50 ish. Or he is lying through his teeth to try and make a gfit, only two options, both suck. Let's take a very famous example, Goku. Every. Single. Major. Obstacle. it is the same thing - we Goku maybe starts on strong (but not always), then gets beaten and broken to borderline hopelessness... which just make his comeback and ultiamte victory much more satisfying. Tao pai pai, Tien, King Picollo, Picollo "jr", Raditz, Vegeta and Nappa, Freeza, or Majin Buu. I don't need to talk about Dragon Ball/DBZ's fame, people don't like the Gary Stu Shad seems to want superman to be portrayed as, they the drama, they like the ups and downs, emotional and visual action roller costers are fun, this bs he is defending is fun only for people who need to touch grass so much they probably should just go and eat some, which would also force them to get their heads out of their butts which they also need to do.

It's pretty clear that Shad never read Byrne's reboot of Superman back in the mid-1980s after the CRISIS miniseries rebooted the DC Universe. Byrne made it clear that Superman is just a disguise used by Clark so he can use his powers to help others. And Clark--despite finding out that he was adopted and that he was from another planet--still thinks of himself as a human and wants to protect this planet.

Vulnerability does not make a hero less inspirational because they stand up to evil regardless of the odds, they inspire hope and with every breath they take they will keep on trying.
People like Shad are only entertained by the spectacle of a one sided fight where Superman's physcial strength is his inspiration to the people not his drive to help them.
