I purchased a Whirlpool topload for my mom 3 years ago. I wanted to get a Speed Queen but the Whirlpool was about 40% of the purchase price. You get what you pay for. The Whirlpool got nothing clean. Whatever smells went in usually were still there. In the moments where it was actually running it sounded a bit like a sick dog. Several people overheard when it would start and asked what the sound was. I knew that I had made a huge mistake.
It was almost a relief when it broke after 40 days. I was so disgusted with it that I opted not to call for service. I never wanted her to have to use it again. I would never dream of selling the repaired piece of crap to anyone, so it got tossed. I found a dealer with Speed Queen and it was delivered and set up the next day. It’s amazing how clean everything came out and how fast it did it. I basically wasted $400 to learn what I knew to begin with.
I’m glad to see the Classic design has returned without the lid lock.

The TR series basically relies on moving the entire tub and changing direction, which means its more likely to burn out the motor. So, not exactly "more reliable". The transmission is another point of failure but Speed Queen also warranties it for 15 years, meanwhile, your motor will be out of warranty after 7 years. Even if the motor doesn't burn out, the higher HP motor will put more stress on the electronics, which mean the electronics are more likely to burn out.

I just did my first loads in my new SQ TC5 washer and dryer. I love the washer! It warmed my heart to see the water level high enough to wash and rinse the clothes so well. BUT my normal sized load of towels was still not dry after TWO HOURS! I had it on the Automatic Regular Max Dry and it took a full 2 1/2 hours to get them dry. I turned off the Extended Tumble after the first cycle because tumbling around in cool air wasn't drying the towels. For the next load, I weighed my towels and only did 9 lbs. It still took 2 1/2 hours for them to dry. For my next load, I did 8 lbs of jeans. I set it on the Timed Drying this time and after the full 75 minutes, they were still damp. I can't find a lot of feedback on the dryer, but I did wonder why the warranty was only 3 years when it is so much longer on their other models. What am I missing here? They are less than 48 hours old!

@Ronald McFondle At its core a washing machine is a heavy duty mechanical device. Its the kind of technology that takes years of development and refinement to provide trouble-free operation over a long period. But washing machines are now being made by manufacturers that's culture and expertise is in electronics, like smartphones, which doesn't crossover well to mechanical technology. That experience tells them that everything possible needs to be made out of plastic while metal is for decorations to make it look attractive. So inside today's washing machines are plastic houses of cards.

I would recommend looking up the reviews of the 2018 Speed Queen TR-series washers.
I had owned two "big-box store" type "High Efficiency" machines (those that claimed to be able to clean clothes in a water level that doesn't cover the clothes), and found that the GE Hydrowave Infusor machine barely outlasted the warranty and the LG CW1101 was a tremendous water hog. Neither machine cleaned the clothes adequately, neither could maintain a balanced load, even when loaded precisely according to directions, and both banged the tub against the cabinet so hard that the machines shifted their position in the laundry closet. The LG lasted a few years longer than the GE did, which isn't saying much.
The LG crapped out (the wash plate came loose from the drive splines) about the time the TC5000 reviews were hitting UA-cam.
I was on my way out the door to buy a cheapo Roper or Amana washer at Home Depot on Saturday, 11 May, 2019 when I decided to check the UA-cam reviews again. There was the TC5000 review, and I was at Smith Appliances in Marietta, Georgia with my credit card on the lid of the showroom TC5000 before the salesman finished greeting me.
The TC5000 shares its mechanical components with the Speed Queen and IPSO and Huebsch (other brands made by Alliance Laundry Systems of Ripon, Wisconsin, and yes, i have seen the IPSO and Huebsch machines in coin laundries near my house). The nearest coin laundry to me replaced all their old (1950s vintage) top-load Speed Queens when I was in college, some forty years ago, and those machines are mostly still in service, though they have replaced four with the IPSOs.
The TC-series Speed Queen machines are entirely different from the TR-series, with a heavier duty suspension for the mechanical components, an all-metal transmission, and a tub brake, so that the wash action stops immediately or the basket stops within two seconds after the lid is opened; the TR machines use a lid lock.
As for wash action, the independent reviews of the early model TR machines reported less-than-satisfactory cleaning action (look up Lorraine Appliances ketchup test).
I work for a consulting engineering company and spend a lot of time grinding Georgia red 'clay' (not exactly clay, but the name has stuck), concrete, grease, and grime into my work clothes. I have a middling-big, very friendly dog, a house and garden usually in need of some sort of maintenance, and I sweat profusely while working. My clothes are cleaner coming out of the TC5000 than they ever were in the GE or LG machines.
The odor removal, I think, would be as much a matter of what laundry detergent you use (I use the Sam's Club
ULTIMATE CLEAN POWER PACS), but Baldurdash the Wonder-Elkhound doesn't complain.
There have been complaints from some quarters that the TC5000 doesn't turn a queen-size comforter over, and my response is, that's what the front-loaders at the coin laundry are for; I don't have any .
I can wash two queen-size microfiber plush blankets in my TC5000 with adequate rollover to clean and freshen them.
Lorraine Appliances' review of the TC5000 expressed some disappointment with the ketchup test results; how often do you do the laundry after filming a slasher mock-snuff flick?
Noise? Not as quiet as the LG was new, but since May of 2019, it hasn't gone out of balance. The hum of the electric motor is present, but I don't hear it in the adjacent kitchen or bedroom.
There has been some comment on the water level selection: normal fill (roughly equivalent to medium on a sixties-vintage machine) and "DEEP FILL", adequate for a full wash load. I seldom run a small load.
Another consideration, most of the HE machines will moderate the temperature of the so-called hot wash option, to a lukewarm temp (around 90 degrees F); the SQ does not mix cold water when the hot wash is selected, and when I checked, the hot water in the washer was 138 to 142 degrees, the same as the water from the bath tap, the same temp as well-done beef.
Price? I paid about $1140, delivered and installed.
The projected 25-year durability and superior performance over anything the big-box stores can offer make the TC5000 a great value,

If the washer was a disaster as you claim which of course you are incorrect Speed Queen would have pulled the design out. However being that it does clean very well for those who know how to do laundry with this type of design. The only reason SQ brought back a similar old design from 2017 was smart marketing to appease those who want a washer which has more aggressive agitation for extremely soiled work clothing. Unless you are a heavy duty outside worker laboring in the trades getting just filthy dirty and don't like to sort laundry and follow the instructions of the new model. Then don't buy that one! Auto Technicians or other mechanical workers who do get lots of chemicals on their work clothes use and have uniforms services who have machines which are far more heavy duty than any homeowner washer and also utilize stronger chemical detergents to deal with that type of cleaning. I don't own a new Speed Queen and am not 100% sold on Top Loading Machines anymore. Considering front loader SQ or Electrolux.

I’m obsessed with washers, and I love trying all different designs… while trying all different designs, I’ve learned that different designs are best suited for different needs.
My husband works in a mine… the TR (and really no eco friendly/gentle/modern designs) get his work clothes clean.. for that excessive level of grime & grease, I need the TC. I need TRUE hot water (not mixed/temp controlled below 100 degrees like most washers), I need REAL agitation/real transmission, and I need a LOT of water.
If it was just me and the kids however, I would actually prefer the design, and features, of a TR…. It’s a great design, if you know how to use that type of washer, and your clothing soil levels are average or less than average.
TC is really only needed for truly excessive grease and grime, and I’m happy it’s available when it is needed… TR is a great machine too however, and I wish we could get away with having that style, honestly. More features and more control.
TC is just built like a work horse, and designed to destroy a LOT of grime. Which it does.

It is enormously harder to build a direct drive system to work as well as a transmission system for any length of time. You need a much stronger motor, for starters, and then you have to design the electronics and logic systems to cope as well as the motor to work with the heat. It can be done, and done well, commercial washers have done it for years. Just, Speed Queen managed to do it so badly in 2018, that it was given the worst rating in the entire history of Consumer Reports.
Generally speaking, the electronic systems need more servicing of their 'splutches' and belts and sensors, but done right, they can work equally well. Not better, as the top load system was perfected in the post WWII era and there is nothing left to improve.

      1) The 2018 TR was such a poor design, it didn't clean.
      2) Our 1969 Speed Queen still runs perfectly and we've never had trouble with the transmission. This current design goes back to about the year 2000 and has a very good reputation.
Let's be clear: The problem is not the concept of direct drive, electronically controlled motors. Maytag Commercial washers use them and have no problem.
The problem is that the 2018 TR series Speed Queen was rated the worst washer in the history of Consumer Reports for very good reason.
At first, Speed Queen just fired agents and snarled at everyone who was unhappy. It cost them a lot of good will before they accepted that they'd made several horrible mistakes.
The TR design was overhauled with better software and other fixes after the 2018 fiasco. Still doesn't wash nearly as well as the transmission variant. Again, not that electronics or logic are inherently bad - the Maytag Commercial is an excellent machine, but Whirlpool had to make several upgrades there, too. The manufacturers have been using the logic to make up for cheaper, less well thought out designs. Speed Queen let their bean counters hurt a previously sterling reputation.

Speed Queen refused to own up to their failure and instead stripped dealer licences away from anyone who was honest about them to their customers. They also removed comments from their page of negative reviews about them as well. Basically, Speed Queen had a great product, due to more government control, they came up with something new, it failed, and it showed their true colors of being complete dicks. So they reintroduced a classic model with changes to meet the government restrictions and hush about everything else still.

Fair Warning: Anyone here comparing the Maytag MVWP "Commercial" to this, you can stop now and just buy the TC5. The Maytag does in fact have a plastic gear trans, plastic splutch and plastic bottom wash tub. Nothing commercial about the new MVWP Maytag (maybe motor? iffy?), its just a pig in lipstick I promise. Look up the parts diagram folks, it never lies.
This TC has all steel trans, tub and no splutch horse crap to fail every few yrs?
The agitator on the TR models turn with the tub and does nothing but swish clothes around. The TC actually agitates like or old washers should do so these washers are very different like was stated here.
The TC will run hot water right out the tap, the TR mixes hot/cold making it wash in warm only, it cannot run a hot load of clothes. IDK why they did that, more EPA bs maybe who knows?
TC also has a 5yr warranty now too btw...
I only wish they kept old school timers on the TC5, much cheaper for owners to replace than new electronics. Great washer, closest you'll ever get today to grandma's washer. By the way who has hers today? Peace

The TC5 and earlier versions of the Classic have a plastic bully drive. The TR7 and TR5 and TR3 have steel pull and steel drive shaft and a thick serpentine belt driving the tub coming from a infinitely variable speed and direction motor with double the horse power and programmed control to automatically recover from imbalance conditions as opposed to the TC5 with only two speeds and needs a 'transmission' from the 80s to perform the back and forth motion needed for an agitator.
Both are great machines but one needs all the facts and some accuracy to make judgments on which is suited for specific buyers. I hope this helps a little in going that direction.

The extra hp truly was a must for TR models because clothes must spin faster to even wash without the agitator. Twice the hp "yes" but at 820 vs 710 rpm its certainly not twice the power from it. "Maybe" if it was double the power the TR models would actually clean and SQ never would of had to bring back their tried and true design again to survive like they done. The TR reviews/complaints just tell it all. Why waiting time is several months for TC5 vs TR models are always in stock.
No secret how TR models take about 15 minutes longer per load and still fail to ever clean enough to make owners happy. Why so many write they want their 10yr old $400 washer back. Only thing it wins is being more quiet. Well' until owner removes clothes and see they're still dirty then quiet awards tossed out nearest window..lol
The kevlar bell pulley on the shaft tip is to slow belt wear. Rubber belt on a steel pulley the steel don't flex but this being Kevlar allows light flex to combat belt stretch during their back/forth motion. The TR never needed this flex so steel pulley is used since it only spins in one direction. Kevlar bell proved to work out well for decades btw.
The transmission gears & shaft are hardened steel and have a 15yr warranty unlike the polypropylene (soft milk jug plastic) all Maytag Commercial/Whirlpool washers trans clutch/gears are made of.
A TC5 trans is shown in 1st link, all steel & heavy duty.

@@harryballz6358 Thanks for the prompt reply.
I note that no where is the main pulley of a TC5 referred to as "Kevlar" instead of plastic except in your opinion. In any case, Kevlar is still not steel.
I note that spin speed does not equal wash quality so your point falls flat on why the TR series "needs" twice the horsepower as a TC5...since the TR series motor came from Speed Queen's well regarded front load washer and since Speed Queen's own staff Engineer refers the TR series as "kinda a front loader", then I would suggest with good cause that the TR series motor is powerful because it must power a front load machine in the form of a top load. This seems reasonable since the TR motor, like that in the front loader, must change speeds infinintly and change direction to effect agitation without the primitive "transmission" and so mustinclude that torque needed for these activities just like their front loader does.
So, in summary on this point, the ability to perform at higher speeds and infinite speeds rather than just two like the TC5 and execute custom wash motions for a "perfect wash" as well as automatic imbalance recovery makes it the superior choice IF those attributes are important to the owner. It was for me.
I note the TR7 has a 7 year warranty as apposed to the TC5 with, you guessed it, a great 5 year warranty.
I note the TR7 cleans beautifully and is easier on clothes, than the TC5, in my experience and those of most others who review the TR series.
I note that nationwide appliance retailer "Appliances Connection" lists the TC5 "in stock" but the TR7 a "best seller" and NOT stock. This even though I could credibly suggest there were more TR7 machines built than TC5 machines this past year.
So, while the TC5 is a great machine and should be considered by many as perfect for them, it is not a better choice because of the reasons you suggest since the TR7 cleans beautifully, is quiet, automatically handles imbalances loads and is efficient, it also can be credibly said that only the TR7 is built of all steel drive train.

Humm? Cause it just took SQ 2.5 months to get a TC5 to me and the 6 other TC5's our dealer received along with ours were all tagged "Sold" and also dated months before too. Had a stack of TC5 orders on his desk he went through to find mine, waiting on them now.
Had all the TR models still sitting on the salesfloor with more in back the entire time our TC5 was back ordered cause they tried several times to sell us the TR instead of us waiting. Our first sales lady even tried sneaking a TR5 on us by writing TR5 on their reciept but TC5 on our copy, she called 4 days after our ordering washer saying they have our TC5 washer "ready for pickup".
Now TR5 was on salesfloor & more new in box in the back the day we ordered cause she showed us the first day. Luckily I dropped by to check the condition of our new TC5 a day before our scheduled delivery and busted her. They almost fired her over it but she was family..lol. Imagine that? She sure caught hell though, maybe pretended to idk. The store manager took sale over apologizing redoing everything right and even sold us the TC5 for the price of the TR5 on sale ($100 less) and two months later our TC5 came in.
All TR models have been "on sale" at both our SQ dealers 3 times I know of since we began buying new appliances and the TC5 has never went on sale once so far nor has one made it onto their salesfloor since being backordered. So their all sold before they hit their loading dock. I even called SQ dealers 100 miles away with no luck before ordering. All said same thing. Not seen any!
Just wondering, how long did you have to wait to get a TR? Id say 10 minutes from time you paid till you drove around back loaded it up...lol.
I see bad TR reviews everywhere online going back to when the first TR was sold so I know its not a best seller for their quality. Good you believe that it is..lol. Many also believe GM won top awards every yr for the last 20yrs even after prez was caught buying all their awards from companies..lol. Just google it...
I suggest you read actual customer reviews on TR series because they're just terrible, most owners hate them from day one but some just cant admit it due to money loss.
SQ TR series stay in stock while months long wait times to get TC5 is surely the only reason TR models are selling. A bad SQ is better than no SQ view some take cause many people can't or won't wait 2-3 months the much better TC5.
TR series bad reviews have continued to climb even after SQ quietly updated them by extending their wash cycles "trying" to get them to clean clothes. Shame its only longer to come out dirty still. My greasy coveralls I use working on my cars/tractors have never looked cleaner. Wife delicates come out just fine too just as this machines done 4 decades. Well imagine that!
Oh now I'd be more surprised if it wasnt the same front load motor. Shame it hasn't helped TR cleaning performance out any because SQ had to update the unit by extending their wash cycles several more minutes and no telling what else they tweeked "after" its failed to wash and after installing the stronger motor it has too. Its a known fact they're still working on the entire TR line since making them 5 yrs ago trying everything to get them to clean even halfway decent while SQ has not needed to change the TC5 any. Humm?
The front load motor used in TR is just another homeowner unit btw, its not a true commercial line washer motor like laundromats use cause its just a 110 not a 220 or higher like true commercial motors, just so you know...lol. My son has been a true commercial washer/dryer mechanic for Cintas and filled me in on how Commercials are built. Commercial design vs being true Commercial are two totally different things. Marketing you know, its simply a 110 homeowner motor so get that out of your head now..lol. Commercial washer motor alone weigh 2- 3 times what these entire machines weigh.
Seems your focused on TR having a bigger motor believing advertising instead of the TC being the washer that actually made Speed Queen company a household name for decades, well if the TR dont destroy it cause it just might.
Truth is if SQ had made the TR units first decades ago we'd never even heard of SQ. Well maybe thats not true? We know them for building the Chevy Vega of all washing machines and would have just went under soon afterward...lmao.
Cnet says TR5 is "The Worst washer they tried in 5 yrs" and they "Dont recommend it to anybody". Their 7 model even, what a damn dud bud! I strongly suggest you return yours asap.

My partner & I both agree, that Speed Queen is our choice for our first washer & dryer purchase. We are lifelong renters and have used a myriad of machines, over the years, and we want a good quality washing machine. He prefers the TR5; but, my 1st choice would be the TC5. I lean towards the tried and true. He likes the mechanical design of the TR5; b/c, it is belt driven versus transmission. Our local appliance dealer leans towards the TR5 b/c of the 5 yr warranty, it's gentler on clothes, and he feels complaints regarding the cleaning ability of the TR5 stem more from the way the consumer uses the machine (i.e. too much water per load size) than cleaning capability of machine itself. I am hoping we are not disappointed in the TR5!
