Great tutorial! The same point of view on the Cajon is really helpful. The recording sounds like you play softly but stil get a clear distinction between the different sounds.

Thanks for the lesson. Guitarist on his second day on the Cajon. I just realized, just as fingerstyle on the former is easier when you tap your foot and allow the thumb to follow the tap, the same concept applies with the Cajon. Tap your foot and follow the beat with the left hand. Really helps achieving independence

Everything about this video is perfect. I don't say that lightly either. Even the type of metronome that you have is awesome. My drum teacher back in 96 said the same thing to me. Wanting to play hard and fast and throw a million fills in everywhere I could as a new drummer does, he looked at me and laughed. He said its how you use the space. Letting the space breathe. I laughed because my dad always use to say it's not what you did, it's what you didn't do. And that can really be translated to music in so many ways. I guess in short.... Less is more and the biggest bands in music are a prime example of that. Not sure if you'll read this but, thank you. Been drumming for a long time, but want to learn the Cajon. This was a perfect start. Btw, what model metronome is that?

I’m 14, and I really love percussion instruments. I’ve been playing the drums since I was 8, and The bongos since us was 12, but for my birthday, I asked my parents for this. I have no idea how to use it, but even after this 1 lesson, it feels more comfortable. It’s such a cool little instrument. It’s also not that load, so I can play it with an acoustic guitar.

Thanks!! Left and right hands are playing ghost notes yep 👍 then there are accents played on bass and snare with the right hand. When we get more complex grooves, both hands have to play accents depending on the beat.

There's no automatic way to do what im doing (that I know of). It requires a lot of manual timing of different video clips ;-) But basically I write out the music in Logic and then record that playing back and copy it into Final Cut and make sure that the notes line up with the sound.

Just discovered your channel! I really like that you show your hands from "our" perspective; it helps understanding what to do... 😃 👍
I don't have a cajon, yet this seems practicable for playing djembe as well.
    My problems though:
    - You proceed too fast for a greenhorn-beginner; I'd need more time to grasp the groove, especially before getting faster. Would be nice to have longer sequences - it's a bit of a hassle to rewind all the time...
    - For me it's hard to see the difference between the "ghost"-snare (tone) and the accentuated snare (tone or slap) in the notes; when I hear it, it's already too late! 😁 Just about ok for a short rhythm; when it gets more complex, I'm out... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Perhaps you could use e.g. a little "x" instead of the notehead (don't know if that's the correct term in English).
    But maybe it's only me?

Actually for writing drums and percussion we use sheet music but without making the lines and spaces into the keys of a piano. That’s just snare drum on the upper and bass drum on the lower in drum notation.
If you’re interested in learning all about this sheet music for rhythmic instruments maybe have a look at my other video ua-cam.com/video/a2-iv2-xYU0/v-deo.html
Here’s a pretty standard image that might help too. I copy the bass and snare of the drumset for cajon cdn.schoolofrock.com/img/content-module-single/how-to-read-drum-notation-1573677463.png

How can we find the groove by listening to any song. example, is it a 8 beat or, 16 beat so on.

    • @rosslmccallum
      @rosslmccallum  Рік тому +1

The steps I think work well are to:
      1. Find the downbeat
      2. Count the pulse to confirm if it's in 4/4 time or what
      3. Feel the subdivision and just tap your hands on your knees. I usually start with 16ths (1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a). By doing this I can find where certain hits are landing in "the grid".
      4. Start playing the cajon with mostly just 16th note ghost notes (that makes up the foundation of many grooves) and start to fill in the accents as you hear them.
      5. Slow down the track. UA-cam has a playback setting to play the video at 75% or 50% etc. speed. I use that whenever I can't hear something clearly or the complexity is too high for me.
As I'm writing this out I'm hoping it makes sense. Truth is, this explanation works better as a video. I know you're just new to the channel and maybe you don't want me to jump into a sales-pitch but I do have special members content that covers this and much more in video form.
This is the official playlist for my complete course (starts out with free lessons and moves into paid content) ua-cam.com/play/PLkFTJa7bYzTg7_BWxo0EQ3dA8eSY1PKkB.html
If you scroll down in there you'll see "Learn By Ear" parts 1 - 4. It's all about that process I described before and includes some ways for you to practice and test yourself in the videos.
If you're interested in this extra material, check out this link: ua-cam.com/users/rosslmccallumjoin
