@@jasonmusic9938 Thanks! It's added separately. I think I started out with just a metronome sound but wanted to use something more musical to do the timekeeping thing.
Ross thank you, you are a great help, just taking up Cajon at 84 years of age, your videos are brilliant. You make it so easy for me to follow, less you x
Man, you rock! I'm an ex drumer. I bought a cajon, and I went to see a bunch of tutorial channels. Yours is the one. Thanks for your good advices and simple explanations. Keep going. Greatings from Belgium.
This was a great video. I appreciate you breaking it down to its rudimentary/simple steps. Your examples were spot on and easy to follow. I learned a lot from this. Thank you so much!
Good simplicity is art should be a phrase to preach. Just bought a Cajon because I wanted to add percussion to my acoustig songs. And that phrase about simplicity applies to music in general. Sometimes the simple songs are the most impactful, if they have this "something special" in it. But I'm just here writing whats on my mind haha, thanks for this lesson, I was familiar with bars and notes and so on, but your visualisation while doing the rythm got me playing in no time. Now I'm here again with a new instrument practicing to a metronome for hours on end :=D
@@rosslmccallum It's been 3 days and I now have the feel for where to hit and how hard to hit, most of the time haha. Damn this is fun. Do you have any advice on how to record a Cajon, or how to make it sound better in a recording in post? It sounds cool already but maybe it can sound better you know haha :D In Audacity I can see the snare being extremely loud while the kick is a little weak. I have my mic in front of the cajon and of course it sounds way better live than in the final recording, just like any instrument. Maybe it's just me hitting the snare way too hard or idk.
I had to practice the 16th notes at 120 so many times but I can play it now with way more confidence, thank u so much! You're the best Cajon teacher on UA-cam! Great lesson :)
Ross, thanks so much for playing these grooves with music. It’s a much better experience being able to play along with you as a beginner. It helps in getting that “Feel” so to speak. Really appreciate your time and effort!😊
Stellar suggestion my brother! Super appreciated the play along and time progression elements of the video, Ross. Will be utilizing on replay until my hands can hang w 16th notes @ 120 lol
I really want to learn cajon from a couple of years and I just could not decide whether should I buy one and start learning with zero music knowledge or not. But I guess I should go for that now. Now is the time after watching you.
This is my 1st time doing this And i hit 16th notes on 120 BPM🎉🎉 Im really surprised Thank you dear ross im really blessed by your videos You deserve more likes, comments and subscribers surely Gob bless❤❤
Great job, I can imagine hard work behind shooting this, even with simple grooves. In my videos I let the mistakes be, but I can't stand if I can't talk properly, so that can take me some effort. So you also explain everything nicely. 🎉
I Hope i live next door to you really, so i can learn from you side to side. Thanks for the course Ross, i only support you by not skipping ads. Good luck!
I could be wrong but as someone who has played Djembe for awhile and now Cajon, I think its easy to get tripped up trying to follow the hands too frequently when watching instructors and videos. Most are better off using their ears, listening intently to the accents, the groove, feeling the pulse, and so on.
Thanks again!! Yeah I think combining theory with engaging musical examples is a good way to learn. If you keep a track the same but change one thing in the rhythm and then explain the theory of that, it feels to me like it’s easy to follow.
@@ajitnair2555 it’s all about putting the work in and sounding a bit better every day 👍😁 The main thing is that you are willing to keep making progress 1% at a time.
Great video. Very well done. Your instruction is clear and it was helpful to see the different grooves in varied tempos played along with music. I've never played a cajon before, only a standard drum kit, so I'm trying to figure out what the learning curve is going from one to the other.
Very good. Well explained. Many learn how to bash about with regards to hand percussion instruments, play some patterns, etc. But often do not learn accompaniment. Or do not know where to begin. I love the play along. Believe much of this instruction can be applied to Djembe as well. What also should not be overlooked is demonstrating one can accompany slow and be effective.
Keep working on it! If you can cut things in half in the physical world, you’ll be able to cut time in half and be able to make evenly divided 8th notes with some practice. Let me know when you feel like you’ve got it.

A friend bought me a cajon for my birthday a couple of months ago and I've been working along with your videos to get me going. I'd like to say thanks! they are very helpful. I was wondering if you would invite Matthew Whitehouse on your channel to give a breakdown of some drum n bass grooves, and how he approaches his technique?
Hey Derek! Congrats on the new cajon and thanks for joining me on your journey with it. Matthew and I actually played a cajon duet together once but I haven’t had as much contact with him recently. I believe he did do a few tutorials on his channel about techniques but maybe not breakdowns of rhythms. It is a great help to show your hand strikes looking down since it is less confusing than from the front which is reversed from the viewer.
