2019 BMW R1250GS Adventure | Walkaround & First Ride Review

  • Integrating BMW’s newly designed 1254cc ShiftCam (variable engine timing) Boxer twin, increasing displacement from the predecessors 1170cc powerhouse, the 2019 GSA is not only more powerful across the board, but it’s also better at every turn. Gone are the days of trading off smooth riding for the inherently choppy Boxer twins torque and off-road ability. Gone are the days of clunky shifting or hunting for the “sweet-spot” in the rev-range.
    Upon first glance, the new GSA may look like a moderate improvement over its former glory, but within the first spark of startup, you’ll know that this is something more, 136 horsepower @ 7,750 rpm more, to be exact. Now, of course, no motorcycle is perfect, and we’ll get to the minor annoyances that persists on this model, but as I’ve said before, perfection is boring, and the GSA is anything but boring.

    The GSA is my dream bike. I want a different paint scheme. I want to ride a low chassis model, probably won't be a new 1250. I'd like to find a nice used 1200 later on, because I bought a new truck not long ago.

    Go back and ride a GSA(or better yet, a GS) after it has about 2k on it. Put it in Dyanamic Pro mode and go find a nice twisty road. You may feel like it’s the only bike you need. I am spending the afternoon readying my KTM 1290 SDR for sale because I have only ridden it once since I got the GS. It deserves better.

      DukeOfDC It is definitely not the bike I thought(and so many others still think) it was. The “old man’s bike” reputation is a reflection of the way some folks use the GS rather than the bike’s performance. The 1250 has more torque than any bike in its class and it is is all usable because of the smooth and precise throttle response and fueling. I swapped out the stock muffler for a Remus 8 and wound up with adventure bike that sounds like a proper naked bike.

      I sold my 2016 SDR after purchasing my 2018 R1200GS Rallye edition. It’s not the beast that the SDR was, but is a much better touring / commuting bike. I would’ve considered a SD GT, however, those are wickedly rare where I live.

      MisterA1649 I almost held out for a 1250, but made way too good of a deal on the 2018... I agree, the GS is truly the “Swiss army knife” of motorcycles. It does everything well... even put on my track leathers and dragged a knee... barely😆

    Just picked up a 19 leftover in black with black spoke wheels...i have a 30in inseam and stuck with standard suspension and ended up buying a low seat for 75-80% of my riding......best thing to do is visit a dealership like you do and let them fit you to the bike and explain the difference between standard and low frames......

  • @NomadOnGS
    @NomadOnGS 5 років тому +1

    @DukeOfDC Nice review Duke. Please review the standard GS and if you can compare them from the weight perspective. I'm a 5 6 tall and 30" inseam, do you think the non lower version can be ridden without any problem with lower seat? Also does the lower suspension compromise the ride quality? I'm thinking to order the new GS and I appreciate if I have an answer from an expert like you.
    Edit: the problem is the lower suspension is not yet arrived to the dealer where I live.

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  5 років тому

      I'll try and get out on one of those too! I think the non-low suspension version with a low seat would be okay with a 30" inseam. The one I was riding was just in low suspension mode on the electronics and had a normal seat and I was fine on it. The only thing I could imagine the truly mechanically lowered suspension version would compromise is offroad capability. You'll lose some travel, but that's about it.

    I have the problem on this bike with down quickshifter. It is soo stiff, I dunno. In manual it says that throttle must be full closed to quick shifter kick in... But it feels like to much pressure is on gear lever to change gear down.. It has 850km, near the first service.. Maybe it will be smoother when he breaks in, after service? Overall great bike, love it, nice power, low gas consupmtion, ESA Dynamic Pro is very nice, and you can turn on cruise control and adjust your windshield with right hand easy. :) Cheers and stay safe.

    DofD, Hypothetically, if you purchased this bike, would you take it off-road? At 24K + I'm speculating that 'most' people who buy this would not risk damaging it while off pavement even with the crash bars. Knowing that falling over while riding off-road is not a matter of if but when, picking up this heavy a bike would not be easy or fun. Having said all this, it is a BMW. Enough said. Pricey but worth the money and IMHO - the best engineered motorcycles on the market.

      @DukeOfDC  5 років тому

    • @STOPsignforRT
      @STOPsignforRT 5 років тому

      @AG Coarseman I agree AG. For off road, I'd pick a much lighter and smaller bike (something in the 250-400 cc range). No doubt, the GSA is a very capable bike and could handle 'most' terrain with ease. I personally would not want to be handling a heavy bike on technically challenging ground. I'm not skilled enough and my aversion to pain grows larger with age. 😁
