- Started off at Soi 20, a road home to a morning market. I would have to label this market as the market “to go”. That is because you can find anything and everything in a plastic bag and ready to take away or grab on the way to the office.
However, right in front is a phenomenal Thai style chicken briyani. The two ladies working it are some of the friendliest people you will meet and are extremely hard working. Nice tender chicken, fragrant and light rice, paired with a nice sweet and sour sauce.
Heading out of the market, had to grab a snack as I walked to my next location for some laab. There was a little bit of a miscommunication and I ended up with two things of laab ,but it was actually a great mistake as they both were really delicious. However, the raw meat laab was by far my favorite. Extremely creamy, soft, and just almost like meat butter.
Time for some noodles!! Now this noodle stall is no stranger to the fame. Unbelievably crowded for lunch, my trick is you have to come get these noodles for breakfast! Pork, on pork, on pork, this bowl of noodles is loaded in with the pig. Make sure to drench these in some chilis as the tom yum sauce tends to be really sweet and slightly sour.
The som tam QUEEN!!! This lady is amazing. So much fun to watch her make som tam, not to mention she runs this place like a boss! Be careful if you say spicy as she will give you the real deal and doesn’t care if you can handle it or not. Best som tam I had in Bangkok. However, it isn’t complete without the pik gai yang dipped in that addicting tamarind sauce.
After a sweet snack and a little bit of a rest, I went to a super late night joint to get the moo ping, or grilled pork. This man is super famous and for good reason. High quality pork, high heat, and a fabulous sauce. I was just sad they forgot to give me my sauce this time.

Hahaha I had the exact same experience at Som Tam Jay So. The lady asked if I wanted spicy, I said yes, and she proceeded to rib me as I sweated like a madman devouring the plate of Som Tam and making sure not to dishonour my family by tapping out! Came back a few more times during my trip-BBQ meets were great too. Really friendly and welcoming people.
The sticky rice with kaya at soi silom 20 really was something else... just salivating thinking about it 🤤

When I am in Thailand I am always on the look out for the best papaya salad. I look for issan food. Bangkok style is too sweet.

Hi Max, I was a big fan of Anthony Bourdain. I can see that a lot of the younger food Vloggers were heavily influenced by him. Anthony was a big fan of the funky and spicy stuff, one of the few westerners who appreciated it. You remind me of him in that respect, only possibly with the spice tolerance of a true local. Loving your videos and I salivate over everything you eat, even the things that I may not even dare try myself. That’s what I call a true foodie!

@@Macoi24 Born and raised in LA (Lower Alabama), and like you, have the travel bug. My wife is from Bangkok, where I lived for about four years! Now we call Asheville, North Carolina home. Probably next Spring we will be flying to Bangkok for a visit. Maybe we can meet up one day, somewhere. Keep having fun! That custardy dessert, btw, is a custard make with rich coconut cream and duck eggs. So tasty! If you have a chance, try the dessert stand at one end of Soi Rambuttri (a road down a bit from Khao San). Their iced desserts are really good. Take care.

Didn't go back this trip, but I would like to visit for longer as I didn't stay that long last time. haha, I know it seems crazy, but every single table had one or two bowls of it so it made me feel better about eating it.

Actually the biryani rice is basmati,the grains are longer and less starchy. The common rice in Thailand is jasmin its grain is a bit shorter and starchier(?) Its more like sticky. Between... I stumbled on your Videos 2 days ago and I have to say. Good job i'm a fan

OMG, the more I watched your video, the more convinced I am that you work for the Service based in Langley, Virginia. Even the way you chomp on the chili and trying to fit in with the locals is out of the operation manual. What mission are you on or rather operation as I am an ex-operative who has left the service behind. Make sure you keep it safe by not eating with your fingers as it will be too obvious then. Stick to the tried and tested stalls and do not eat anything weird in case the operatives from the other side noticed and exposed you.

Hey Marx, Isaan foods never put fermented tofu in neither raw laab or cooked one. in the raw, just put the cow blood and the cow gall ( if asked for) to that raw beef. Only the Chinese (techew) kind of foods that use red beancurd in Thailand.

This guy was born and raised in Roi-et but went aboard for an education. Raw Laab is number one dish for me. More authentic is called Soi-ju (ซอยจุ๊); chopped raw fresh beef dipping with bitter brine sauce (Jaew-Plia: แจ่วเพี้ย).

Not surprise that you had a great time enjoying the hot & spicy Thai food! Never tried the Thai satay, does it taste similar as Malaysian satay?
So they do have a satay in Thailand that is different from this, that is much more similar to what you see in Malaysia. However, this one is much more different. Well, I can't really say that, the dipping sauce taste like something you would see in the north around Penang. Spicy, sour, slightly sweet.
