    I love that Ben aflec as the best friend isn’t jealous and trying to hold him back because the best friend is insecure. Instead he’s one for the major reasons that the main protagonist is able to grow and move on.

      His last line in the movie "Son of a bitch, he stole my line.." wasn't even scripted. He just did what he did best and sent out a zinger and they loved it and kept it as the ending.

      @@j00jy So much of Robin William's dialogue in just about every movie he's in was Ad Libbed. Pretty sure that directors just knew to let him go and they'd get gold on film. Such a brilliant comedian/comedy actor and an amazing dramatic actor. RIP.

    Notice that Robin Williams called him son during the "it's not your fault" scene. He said "listen to me son. It's not your fault". He was portraying his father, calling him son, and taking the blame for his actions. Fantastic psychological work.

    The scene where Robin Williams tells the story of his wife farting was completely unscripted as-lib by Williams. That's why Matt Damon's laughter looked so real...because it was. If you watch closely, you can see the camera shake some because the cameraman was laughing, too, because nobody was expecting Robin Williams to tell that story.

    It is always tough to watch this movie for me...I grew up in some of the same areas that the film takes place, so it literally hits really close to home for me. Can u believe these 2 dorks, Matt and Ben, started writing this in their early twenties, having no idea what or how to write! And someone they knew was blown away, and got a rough bit to robin! And how they got Robin and Stellen to do this, I'll never know! Robin won an Oscar for this! After Robin died, Matt goes back to the bench every year on Robin's bday, sometimes with his kids. The park bench is a memorial now! The younger guy is Casey Affleck! The red head is now in Yellowstone, Cole Hauser! A fantastic actor, but a bit of a loose cannon. His father was even a better actor, but certifiable! Wings Hauser!!
    Originally, they didn't know how to write the end. Robin comes up with the final line, director and Matt look at each other like, Movie done! He add-libbed the wife farting lines. Matt is cracking up for real. Even the camera man was rolling....look at the camera frame on that scene, it's shaking! Robin has done several top feel good movies. This, patch Adams, good morning Vietnam, awakenings, Dead Poets, and really one could say the bird cage, Doubtfire and Jumanji....which is really a movie about Spielberg's relationship with his dad. In this movie, Ben is actually quite smart, with his brother, with the employee guys, he talks them into the dust! He could do sales, marketing, etc., he also doesn't know his potential.

    This is one of my favorite movies, not only because of the great script and acting, but because of the theme of a genius who might turn his back on his talent. As part of the Vietnam War/Hippie generation, I saw a tremendous number of talented people who threw away their lives.
    I showed this movie to my daughter when she was about to enter high school. She was a brilliant student, especially gifted in mathematics, and I hoped it would ease that struggle with not fitting in with her friends (we always discuss movies in depth afterward). She went on to graduate summa cum laude and win a 4-year scholarship. A few days ago, she graduated college, cum laude, in just 3 years. Ironically, she would have been summa again, except for a C in organic chemistry.

    When this film was released, Robin Williams was the only reason I went to see it. I grew up watching Robin Williams on the TV Show "Mork & Mindy". Robin had a way of acting that reached into your chest and squeezed your heart for every tear you had in you. Other fantastic films of his that you need to see if you haven't already are "Dead Poet's Society", "What Dreams May Come", "Patch Adams", and "Awakenings" to mention just a few films. This film was fantastic. Robin Williams won his only Oscar with this film as "Best Actor In Supporting Role". This film wouldn't have risen to the level of greatness that it did had Robin not been a part of it. I hope you react to more of his films. They're amazing.

    The writing, editing and acting come together near perfectly, with Gus Van Sant choosing his scenes carefully to coalesce seamlessly with the emotional flaws so evident in the title character.
    Something as simple as Will standing in the rain, hair wet and looking dishevelled, while at a loss for words in calling Skylar, who has placed him in unfamiliar territory.
    Trauma has taught him that vulnerability is a weakness, yet one biting joke later about his buddy's mother's "800 number" and a good dose of humility is avoided. Will can safely amble back over his castle wall, unscathed.

    I've read debates about how much they wrote whether they came up with the idea and the dialog was refined by someone else. The way things work in Hollywood famous people get all the credit. I could be wrong but I have trouble believing a pair of young inexperienced actors could write something like this. They've never repeated writing anything like this again... It also wouldn't have been as impactful without Robin Willams. But fan boys don't come at me.

    • @ptthatswhatshesaid
      @ptthatswhatshesaid  4 місяці тому +1

      Without any proof of anyone else, I suppose they wrote it. The opposite is possible of course. But if it's just a question of not believing 2 young guys wrote this, then I don't automaticaly think it wasn't them

      @@ptthatswhatshesaid I did quick reddit search "The reputed screenwriter William Goldman apparently had quite an input on the dialogue and structure of Good Will Hunting..."
      Reminds me when celebrities "write" a book about their life. It's common practice to sit down with a ghost writer and no one cares who that person is.
      I find it suspicious the first screen play they wrote won an Oscar and then never wrote anything again. They also are not screen writers or writers by profession.
