  • Rice commencement speaker Salman Khan's address to the graduates focused on contributions of a different kind: He urged the students to do everything they can to "increase the net happiness in the world."
Khan is the founder of the Khan Academy, a free online education platform and not-for-profit organization that has made waves in the field of education. In 2004, Khan's online tutorials for a young cousin gained a wider audience, and five years later he turned his collection of free educational videos into the online Khan Academy. Today, his more than 3,200 online tutorials attract 6 million viewers every month, and Time magazine recently named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.

The future of education is like Khan Academy, and I greatly look forward to the day when all students take advantage of it. Thank you Sal.

I'm about to head over to school to graduate from high school in 2 hours. Khan I've always watched your videos and they've helped me greatly, but I think this was the most empowering one yet. I was a bit scared to leave behind high school and head into college and the "real world" and I spent the greater part of today sleeping from pure anxiety. However, after I saw this video I felt confident again. Thank you for empowering me in life, I hope I can do the same for others in the future :]

Just amazing! The dedication and perseverance behind the free global education concept of Sal Khan is absolutely staggering. The focussed message to the 2012 graduating class at Rice is far greater for all thinking people, and even if a few do something, it is great change possibility.

I cannot express how much I appreciate Sal Khan...When I was in the pit of thinking of myself as stupid and dumb on not being able to solve some homework, Sal's words that no one is stupid but rather our knowledge is incomplete due to gap of more foundational knowledge has spoken to me, and I'll never forget that. Great talks as always and all kudos to Sal!

no matter how much guts i have the world has showed me that certificates just make the world go round. life has processes. this needs too be followed. with out that there nothing that i can do myself. so i looked around and saw what my problems was. education. now time to get back to the basics with is sadly something that i was not give because of my situation. i am focused. to get what i was not allowed to notice in the foundation was a necessity. so am going to (get some) my foundation!education!

The funny thing is that Sal is better than almost every teacher I ever had in high school. I think the only reason that this form of teaching won't/hasn't (or at least not entirely) replaced conventional teaching is because going to an actual school is a very large social experience for people. As far as education goes Khan Academy is so much better!
