10:50 It’s harder to be kind than clever. Kindness is a choice. Cleverness is a gift.

    Best quality = 240p? Seriously @princeton?
Can you upload a slightly higher quality version of the original video so it isn't so blurry?

I love the focus on choices making us what we really are! I wonder what he means by "service", but I like how he clarified that being clever and kind aren't opposites. You can be clever and not stomp on other people. The choice is what you do with your gifts.

10/10 video. There are many commencement speeches out there that are incredible. However, this one stands out for me due to the ability to relate to everything he's saying. I think this is one that can really inspire me as a college student and the future choices I make.

There is no doubt he has created one the most innovative company in the world, and he worked hard for it. But there are also other people out there who not only created amazing companies, they also kept their humanity and good work ethic. This guy has totally lost his human side when it comes to work ethic. The work condition in Amazon is almost the same as in a slavery camp.

I read his biography. When he started his company in 1995, he was competing against industries already entrenched in their niche category. Selling electronics competed with major electronic retailers, selling books competed with Barnes & Nobles, and dozens of others. Amazon in 2002 simply would not have survived had it had anything less than the work culture it has today. The company was nearly in total bankruptcy and major obstacles prevented the company from scaling at reduced cost.
Back then, Jeff simply hired the best and has them perform their best, nobody forced the first 500 Amazon employees to stay employed working 80+ hours a week when the company first started. The same concept applies today, Amazon is competing against a significant numbers of companies on the planet for market control and survival, nobody is forcing anyone to work at Amazon. Those who do work many hours at Amazon and thrive under their culture makes Amazon the successful company it is today.

@@Firebolt68 Ever heard of Sikandar also known as The Alexander.. The person who wanted to conquer the world ?
Kings and Emperors have used similar reasoning to expand and ever expand their kingdom/dominion from time immemorial ..
Business Tycoons are the new Imperialists. Kings and Emperors found it hard to be kind. And people like Jeff are same. Sword and weapon has been replaced by capital. The soldiers by the employees and management.

    For those bashing Amazon:
It's much easier to hate than to love.
It's much easier to complain than to create something great for mankind.
You can hate all you want (to make yourself feel better), it doesn't make you a better person than the ones you hate.
    Love you all ****

In my view, Mr. Bezos presentation is perfection of excellence which comes from honestly blending sincere humility with creative genius and genuine caring. Those who recognize this have earned the right to view this video. Yes, absolutely, "it's harder to be kind than clever." In these days of easy anonymity it's even easier than ever to be lazily critical of everyone and everything. In days gone, certain types of criticism would have earned a red dripping nose.

"harder to be kind than clever" - depends how clever you are or indeed how naturally kind you are. I personally find it easy to be both. I regard unkind people as stupid anyway.
